I've been to Ho Kee before and the food is always solid. My review this time is for the roast duck as takeout. I ordered through Uber Eats for pickup. The restaurant was very fast to prep the food and the half roast duck had a very excellent amount of meat. Some places may try to pass by with boney parts but they gave a reasonable number of meat for $20. The one downside is that the duck is pretty oily and lots of sauce/oil at the bottom of the box for a roast duck but you gotta give it to them for making it tasty despite the greasyness. Note the half duck doesn't come with rice so make sure to add to your order if you need. read more

This place used to have the best roast duck but after the last two times ordering out, I will no longer be ordering from them again. Each piece used to be edible, filled to the brim with meat, and full of flavor. Now it's full of bones, fat and gristle and much smaller than before. On our most recent visit, we ordered a whole roast duck and what we got looked like half. We assumed the duck was as per usual but upon opening the container it was the opposite. We stopped by last week when we were visiting LA. It was raining cats and dogs and but we ventured out of our Hotel to find some hot food. We walked in to this spot and noticed we were like one of two tables in the entire restaurant probably because of the rain? The name of the restaurant has "cafe" in the name but it seemed like it was full on Seafood restaurant with Chinese BBQ too. We ordered the Wonton noodle soup which was pretty good and hit the spot on a cold and rainy night. We ordered three Salt and Pepper fried Squid and the Fried King Crab Fried Rice from their specialty menu. The Fried Squid was very tasty but some of the pieces were clumped together and the batter was not cooked all the way through. The Fried rice was a bit bland and we could not taste the crab. The waitress also brought out a plate of steamed peel and eat shrimp on the house and it was fresh and the dipping sauce that came with it was tasty. Overall, 3. 5 stars but well round up to 4 stars for the Service. read more

Ho Kee is one of my favorite Cantonese Cafe. I have always eaten at their San Gabriel location on Del Mar but decided to try their more modern location in Arcadia. I ordered my two favorites: half roasted duck and the fried tofu. I also tried their fried rice. The quality and taste is the same as the San Gabriel location. Ho Kee Cafe has two locations: San Gabriel and Arcadia. I became aware of this restaurant from watching a documentary on chef Andy Ricker. He spoke highly of this restaurant, so I knew I wanted to try one of their locations. Cantonese style Chinese food is one of my favorite cuisines, so it didn't take much to convince me to try this spot out. Everything we ordered from here was delicious. The star of the show was definitely the : Roasted Duck and Wonton Noodle Soup. This restaurant is known for these two dishes... among other things like their Pun Choi (New Year's platter feast) or specialty "order in advance" dinners consisting of premium ingredients and seafood. I thought the Roasted Duck was GREAT! Not gamey at all. It was a combination of sweet, salty, perfect duck skin that's not too fatty and semi crispy. Since I did do take-out, I reheated the duck in the oven to warm it a bit and it came out perfectly. Unlike most wontons made of pork and shrimp filling, the wonton dumplings here are made of SHRIMP ONLY containing NO PORK. They use good quality big shrimps for the wonton dumplings. The soup broth tasted of chicken and light seafood base, onion oil and was very flavorful with a clean tasting finish and NOT fishy (important to me). Very light msg to none detected. The yellow Hong Kong style noodles that they use is of good quality. I highly recommend this restaurant. Also, they got plenty of parking at this location. read more

Definitely some good eats here. I'd recommend everyone to get a prefix menu for your large group of 10 or more as everything is a tasty treat. We came here for my annual dinner white elephant and we got a party of 30 for the event but at the same time we had picky eaters and people on a tight budget so it made it hard so we broke it down to three tables. One table was prefix with all the seafood dishes and it came out to roughly $45 per head then we had a table that was family style which had mainly non fish or shellfish and that came out to $22 per person then our last table it was individual bill for each person. Nobody shared and each ordered paid for whatever they wanted for themselves. Personally I'd go prefix or family style but I wanted to appease everyone. I was too busy that I forgot to take any photos really but everything was good and I'll definitely be back. read more

We visited around CNY and you can tell a lot of "regulars" dine here. The customers would be giving the workers red envelopes so I see that as a good sign. We had just returned from a trip from Ecuador and we were totally craving Canto food. We've visited this location before, but definitely 1st time dining in since the pandemic. We ordered: char siu, west lake soup, bok choy veggies with crab meat, kung pao chicken, and walnut shrimps. They were out of roast duck that night we visited, so I was a bit bum. Alas, the food was great and our tummies were happy. Lotsa leftovers because don't cook so we always order extra. From seeing other reviews, I see many complaint of bad customer service. Stopped by one Saturday night around 8:30p. We were seated right away and the staff were super kind! There are private rooms on both sides of the restaurant for large parties, and us regular patrons in the middle had a good laugh at some of the muffled karaoke emanating from the rooms. My friend and I had been craving Peking Duck and had to call a few restaurants to make sure they had some available. Ho Kee Cafe let us get a half order, which was perfect, and we also got the minced chicken and corn soup. Delicious! The duck was surprisingly juicy. We washed it all down with huge refillable coffee milk teas. Love this place, and would come back again soon. Parking was also super easy. I've been here many times. This is the first time I really remembered to give a review. Even compared to my other visits, everything was so consistent. 1) The food was piping out and made fresh. We chose this restaurant for a gathering with friends. After being on cruise for nearly a week, we were missing our Cantonese food. We arrived for an early dinner with no wait for our party of 6. This location is much more spacious than the original one in SG. There are more tables which are able to accommodate large groups. They also have a private dining room. The staff was attentive and friendly. They checked on us periodically and offered refills on our lemon teas. We ordered several dishes amongst our group to enjoy family style. The menu is extensive with so many options. For our entrees we ordered: ****West Lake Beef Soup - a good starter with beef and cilantro. We ordered green beans, walnut shrimp, orange peel chicken, Mongolian beef, bbq pork, half roast of duck, bbq pork fried rice, war wonton soup, and steamed rice. The green beans were really garlicky. I like dipping it in the plum sauce which is sweet. Since we came on Sunday late lunch - 2 p.m. ,there was no wait .They utilized a few of their parking spaces. They only have a few tables for out door dining with a couple of umbrellas. And one bigger tent that can accommodate bigger groups. Bring a hat and eye shades if you intend to dine here lunch time. I've been here multiple times in hopes the experience will get better. They are usually not busy, one or two tables max but majority of the time it is pretty empty. The younger taller waiter with glasses is so nice. The big face lady with the glasses has a pretty big attitude and would take forever to serve. If you ask her over, she would be severely inpatient and slap the menu and remind you to tip since she provided service. The worst part is the short stubby waiter with glasses who is super loud. He's always yelling and he can definitely escalate to screaming at times in the kitchen. One time, after he woke up and came out of the room after sleeping, he started yelling at everyone. Perhaps he is the manager, but it really hurts the ambiance of the restaurant. Plus, I don't appreciate him pocketing tips himself. I notice every time I tip in cash, he would pocket it. Literally puts the 20 in his pocket. As for the food, it is a hit and miss, if you come here consistently enough, you'll know the flavors and quality of food is very inconsistent. Fried Tofu - SOO GOOOOD. This brings me back to my memories in HK. Perfect crisp on the outside and silky smooth on the inside. Good shape and puff. Not deflated like others I've had in the States. Roast duck. Gosh darn farting roast duck that makes you just scream a litany of curses for being that good, that satisfying, and that alluring to bring you back the next day without fail. Both of my last visits to LA, the SG spot did that to me. Two days in a row in my 2 day trip involved their roast duck. Two days in a row in my more recent 3 day visit involved their roast duck at the Arcadia location. It really did me that solid...and sated an inner desire for that combination of activated five spice, lots of salt, and irreplaceable duck essence. And here, I could tell you that it was better than whatever the other remotely similar establishments had to offer for the general price, service, and efficiency. True, I've been to both and am only reviewing this one. Why? It's in many ways the better spot in my books and the one I'd visit first before the other. And pretty much based on location at this point with all the other variables, *only one* (if more siblings were indeed to appear). Parking is better. Seasoning is better. More tables, more space (and private rooms) and less wait time. Did I say seasoning is better? Yes, seasoning *is* better. The duck is more appropriately salted in the Arcadia branch that brought the intensity of flavors as should be. One that I've had gripe about at the SG spot (not to mention my mother had brought up as well despite my eyes rolling in their sockets in slight frustration). Another immediate observation is the crispness of the skin stands out more here. I won't bother to delve in technical culinary explanations but will just explain it this way: They may be of the same owner but their goods are delivered differently. So anyone may show their loyalty differently (and to each their own) but for one who only cares about taste and preparation and nothing else...I've found myself leaning to this being the better of the two. Here, I find my needs in taste met appropriately as I dance with great service (mind you that I said that of a casual Asian spot) and entertained by a simple atmosphere that slaps me back to what is important: the gosh darn lovely food. I heard good things about their other location, but the long wait and heavy smokers outside turned me off from waiting there. When I found they opened a somewhat larger location with better parking in Arcadia, I was excited to potentially add a new weekend go-to place. After a couple of visits, I'm ready to move on. The food is hit or miss, depending what you order and when you order it. On our last visit, the curry beef over rice and filet mignon French style weren't very good. BF particularly did not like the quality of the filet mignon. We had also ordered their juicy pork dumplings off their table tent menu of dumplings. They had advertised that you can choose any noodle with dumplings. Turns out it was false advertising. They claimed only the steamed dumplings come with the free noodles. Everything on that table tent were labeled as dumplings. If they didn't mean that, you gotta update the sign! I forget that when I come here, drinks are full price, even with entree purchase. I've been spoiled with Delicious Food Corner, since drinks are $1.90 as long as you order an entree. I'm not sure if it's a new thing too, but they throw in a plastic straw in your drink without request, going contrary to the law right now regarding restaurants and straws. In the past, they'll bring the drinks out and then set straws on your table, giving us a chance to tell them, "no thanks, we have our own metal straws." I noticed that all the drinks coming out that day has a plastic straw stuck in it already (except water) and none of the servers were asking the tables if they wanted a straw while ordering the drinks. At least the good part was that they were very on top of keeping my drink refilled, even when it was only half empty. The last visit was just so bad overall in terms of food quality, environmentalism, and clear advertising that I am done and not going to waste any more time and money here. Amazing friendly service paired with all the good eats! I was so pleased with the cleanliness, safety precautions, and immediate attention from staff when we entered. We got take-out, but once they realized we were eating it at the table outside, they checked if we needed utensils and brought over wet naps. Got my HK Cafe fix here (without the sass)! If you're not familiar with HK cafes or diners in Hong Kong they can be a bit abrasive..... but here they're super nice! Our party of 3 got seated pretty quickly explored the menu for a bit before ordering. We ended up getting the fish maw soup, beef chow fun and family style tofu. All of which came super fast and super hot! Their flavors are very well balanced. Nothing tasted super salty or under seasoned. The fish maw soup was a good consistency not too gooey but also not runny. It was flavored just enough that adding vinegar or pepper wouldn't destroy any of the flavor. They could've been more liberal with their crab meat but it wasn't a big deal for me. Their beef chow fun was bomb as well. It wasn't too salty or too oily, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Their noodles were still lengthy and their beef wasn't bad either. I have been to places that chop of all the noodles during the stir fry process but this place did a great job with it. My favorite dish of the night was the family style tofu. It's a slightly sweet and salty braised?? tofu dish. The fried tofu were still pretty crunchy even though they were soaked in the house sauce. I loved the peppers that helped to elevate the dish when paired with the plainness of the tofu and (slightly) sweet and salty sauce. read more

I enjoyed this tea because it didn't taste overly sweetened. It was a little strong but if you really like black tea, this is for you) -Salty pork bone with pumpkin porridge (Well balanced soup. Porridge can be eaten alone + some soy sauce OR eat it with the salty pork bone. Although this dish does not come with a large amount of meat, the pork really packs a nice punch. I RECOMMEND) -Sliced duck and preserved vegetable vermicelli soup (Probably my least favorite dish we ordered. Soup was something that I eat often at home for the new year. Tasted like a bamboo base. The vermicelli were hard to swallow. I am not sure if that is the style of these noodles/brand or if they were undercooked. The duck in the soup were a little too shredded for my taste. At the end of the meal, this was left over) -hong Kong style butter bun (This was a bolo type bun. Think crusty sugar top. It wasn't too sweet to be a breakfast item. Classic Cantonese cafe. I ate at arcadia location. There is another location in San Gabriel. The interior, decor and cleanliness is way better than. Most Chinese restaurants. So if you wonder what is classic Cantonese breakfast, it is fish Conjee (cook rice until it's like oatmeal or soupy with thick pieces of Pollock or meaty white fish), eat it with a fried donut (yaw cha quay), and I added a wonton noodle soup on top of that. Wonton noodle soup is classic lunch. Everything was pretty good. Their fish conjee was excellent with super fine ginger so you don't get chunks of it. The wonton noodle soup is above average but I prefer to get it at Sam woo 6th street Alhambra. If you are in Arcadia, Baldwin park or El Monte, it is worth it to get it here to save gas. we got oranges for desert as a bonus. I love this place. read more
