Used to frequent this spot when I lived in Malletts Bay years ago. Came back for a visit and stopped in...place hasn't changed a bit in 20 years (and that's a good thing)! Ordered the Steak Hogie and it was everything I remembered and then some...perfect in every way:juicy, meaty, cheesy, on a fantastic Grinder Roll. This place is hard to judge honestly. I see one star and five star reviews. But I have been eating here since I was in high school and I still see it as a treat every time I get food from the Hoagie Hut. Anyways, if you read previous reviews, do not worry because the next generation has taken over, and this guy does things right. He made me sandwiches on lunchtime all through high-school and man are they huge and amazing. Sometimes it's best not to watch people make your food, but a good cook knows when to wash their hands or put on gloves and you can't use a new pair of gloves every time when making 200 sandwiches a day. One guy runs this place and does a great job. Back In the day I would agree with the other reviews, other than the food has always been top notch. Took in some football while enjoy a meal and they were great with our energetic and curious toddler which can be difficult during these odd times. I ordered a burger, fries, and a shake. There was only one person working. I watched him make my food and several other orders, run the register taking cash, blow his nose, AND I NEVER HEARD RUNNING WATER. No gloves, no handwashing, just cash food and bare-handed nose blowing. He even rounded up my total (!). At least the food was OK. read more

The owner (I think that's who he was) started ranting about immigrants at the southern border while FOX news is blaring on the TV. He started telling me that they did not know how to make meatball sandwiches (which is what I ordered) in Florida. That was weird. And that has been the secret to the success of Brothers Gary and Jamie Vetters who will be celebrating 38 years in business this October. They put out a tasty, basic menu and give their customer more than ample servings for the money. Serving up menu items like mixed Italian cold cut sandwiches, hamburgers, Montreal smoked meat sandwiches and the ever popular hot sausage plate no one ever leaves this place hungry. Perhaps the single best sandwich value in Chittenden County is their steak hoagie special. Real shaved rib eye steak that is hand cut and then grilled with sweet onions, green peppers and held together with American cheese all mounded high on top of a locally produced Koffee Kup grinder roll. First off, Food here is great! I wouldn't say the atmosphere is all that great though. Employees seemed rather annoyed that I wasn't sure what I wad going to order when I first came in. The service at a whole is not very good. Also they only take cash which sucks. However when it comes to food this place is amazing. The philly cheesesteak is huge! Place is dirty and run down, owner is pretty unfriendly and made a big thing about not being able to pronounce my girlfriends name (she is not white like them.) Food is Frozen, and oil for fries not fresh when I was there. They like the Yankees and have sports on all the time. I saw no sign of local food use. read more

Small-town, family-owned establishment. Huge portions of average food. On the plus side: My meal was served piping hot. On the minus side: My companion's sandwich toppings weren't correct. Ironic, considering the name of the establishment. MAJOR MINUS: We were harangued by one of the servers about his golf game and details of his personal life that made everyone in my party uncomfortable, and very ready to leave. (Note: The other two employees were friendly and quiet.) It feels like this sandwich shops wants to be a Sports Bar when it grows up. It that's what you're looking for, then this is your place. Disgusting.. I ordered an Italian sub and almost puked watching the gentleman make it (I'm assuming he was an owner?). Ironically I came here because on Google they had a good rating. But man do I wish I had done better research before going here. While I was figuring out what I wanted, I watched the gentleman walking around touching all sorts of stuff on the counter thinking once I was ready to order something that maybe he would wash his hands or put on some gloves. I was wrong. Once I told him I wanted an Italian, he brought out a sub roll with his bare hands, which was the first sign for me this was a bad decision. He then proceeded to bring out an unwrapped chunk of meat with his bare hands, which he sliced up and added, followed by the provolone cheese, which had a nice bluish spot in the middle of one of the slices that he simply picked off with his finger (left the slice there tho!). He then proceeded to add the veggies and seemed annoyed when I told him I did not want peppers after having initially told him I did not want peppers...ripped up the lettuce with his gross fingers right in front of me, and wrapped things up with some slices of ham. We went to the cash register and yes I bought the sandwich (even after all that) knowing full well I was not going to eat it at this point - I honestly just didn't want to get in an argument or be a jerk since I was hanging with my friends and didn't want to spoil a good night. I handed the gentleman cash, he gave me my change, and he went back to put away the food he took out with the same unwashed, bare hands as I was leaving. Besides the fact that I still feel the guy was kind of rude, the main thing for me is this place is just not sanitary. Go to the Price Chopper nearby (which I did) or, if open, the Big Apple Deli if you want a quick bite to eat. Anyway, just a warning. I was there today, my boyfriend and I ordered both of our cheese burgers well done! Neither of us ate all of our burgers because most of it was raw!! While we were in there a family came in and ordered sub's, the man took the order, and started making the sandwiches not washing his hands or putting on gloves!!! Been eating at this place for over 15 years. Family run by two brothers who are opposite personalities to some degree but nice guys. Be prepared for a bit of sports talk and some "what the heck" politics but... The food is the best you can drag out of the fryer and the salads are fresh and the menu is very diverse. Not the biggest bargain in the state, but a good value for the YUGE serving of whatever you order ends up on the plate. Cheese steak is easily enough for two.
