They stacked 4 to-go containers into one bag, which can be convenient but I'd prefer if they bagged the container that would leak the most separately. The food was great! Just as expected. I have been eating at this Korean restaurant for many years. Hoban's food is consistently delicious, and the quality has remained excellent over time. They offer a wide variety of dishes, and my Korean friend says the food is authentic. The portions are generous, so you don't need to order one dish per person. This location has a ton of seating available. There are no grill tables where you grill your own meat, and instead you order and the meat comes out already cooked. Banchan dishes come out very quickly after ordering. The kimchi has a mild spice. Each entree comes with one small bowl of rice. The Galbi is on the spendier side for the portion, but it comes out sizzling hot and is very flavorful. It's cut into bite size pieces and is very juicy. It's a little on the fattier side. I use to come here years ago a few times when there weren't many korean restaurants around. It's been a long time and I decided to drop by again and got their kimchi chigae. Perhaps my tastebuds are quite spoiled after eating korean food in Cali and Texas but it just definitely felt like my soup was just thrown together. It was okay that I was able to eat most of it (I do not like wasting food) but it just didn't feel fully authentic to me, like it was if I have attempted making at home. My kimchi pieces in the soup were definitely too big that it did take me a bit to eat, some pieces just tasted off too.. It was kind of hard to finish. I also always questioned why this place and a few other places in Minnesota charge for lettuce for lettuce wraps. Hoban charges $6+ for some lettuce, sauce, and jalapeño.. A few years ago, I went to this restaurant with my children and had a disastrous experience. As great appreciators of Korean culture and cuisine, trying a new location was exciting. The perfect storm of terrible service and excessively sweetened food dashed our enthusiasm to return. At the time the owner and manager did read my yelp review and reached out. They offered us a meal on the house, but I never was able to return. Recently on a whim we decided to go back but pay for our own meal. The difference was notable. Not only were we immediately greeted, but every dish was cooked perfection and the right temperature. We had a vast array of appetizers and entrées. The service was perfectly attentive to the point that we never lacked for anything. Our water was refilled each time and we were offered additional dishes of Bonchon when they were emptied. I highly recommend this restaurant now. In fact, I would say it has become one of my favorite. When speaking with locals this is the place they recommend for Korean food! It pains me at how hard it is to find a good Korean spot in the cities where you actually get a normal amount of banchan and aren't gawked at by the wait staff when they do refills. So many places just aren't delivering on the expectation of included rice and side dishes which is the standard for Korean restaurants. I'm glad to report the banchan is varied and delicious here, but also wished patrons were not being nickeled and dimed for more rice. Despite Korean food generally being a higher price point you actually get what you pay for here--a generous portion for the price demanded. I've been coming here for years, but this visit was disappointing. The napa cabbage was wilted, covered in black speckles, and had several unusual brown objects between the leaves (see photos). The banchan, steamed rice, and bossam also seemed old and not very fresh, and the bossam had an unpleasant texture. Most of the food options are a bit overpriced, but it all tastes decently good. As for the karaoke I'd say it's as bad as they come. None of the English songs are the actual instrumentals. It's like they all came from SoundCloud remixes or CDs that a sketchy dude tries to sell you at a gas station. The mics don't come with auto tune which isn't a deal breaker but something to consider. You can't connect your phone to the system either through Spotify or Apple Music. One of the og Korean restaurants around the twin cities area that's been around for years. I've been here copious amounts of times, each time I come it's because I'm craving the galbi and soon dubu jichae. I think the service has gotten better over the past few years. They are more attentive with your water, adding side dishes and the food comes out relatively fast even when the restaurant seems relatively busy. The pajeon was okay this time I had it, it was pretty soft which I prefer a bit crisper. The galbi and grilled mackerel were the stars of the show, the galbi was nicely charred and cooked to a medium wellness soo good. I was disappointed in the soon dubu jigae, way too salty this time. The japchae noodles were good, not sure if I'd get it every time because I've made it better myself at home, the noodles were a little overdone to my liking. Stopped by Hoban a couple of months ago with some friends after a night out at the connected Karaoke shop Do Re Mi. There is another location of Hoban in Uptown Minneapolis where I used to live so I had some expectations going in, although that one is focused on KBBQ where you grill at your own table. The menu is pretty good with a lot of options and what seemed to be something for everyone which was great as we had a large group with a lot of picky eaters and people with dietary restrictions. Also, without any reservation, the restaurant and waiters were kind enough to accommodate us and push tables together despite it being pretty crowded. I decided like trying something new so I got the Chicken Katsu which I know is more of a Japanese dish than Korean, but felt like trying something new here that I hadn't had at the other location. After we ordered, they brought out banchan for us which were super delicious. A good mixture of spicy, savory, and sweet dishes. These were great to keep us satisfied while we waited for our dishes. The chicken katsu was good - nice and crispy, not super dry on the inside and with a few little veggies on the side. It was good and decently filling. Came here for my final dinner before leaving back home the next day. It wasn't a too far drive from Mall of America and had better food options than the ones there. The service was great. The greeted us and sat us down promptly. There was only 2 other parties there besides me, my sister and Mom. Apparently there is a karaoke next door but idk if there were people there or not cause I didn't hear anything so it didn't bother us. The food was out in under 10 minutes and it was HOT and steamy. The side dishes were good but I didn't care much for them because the food was good and I didn't have room for them. The only one I didn't like too much was the beans. It was good at first but after the 3rd bite, I didn't care for it anymore. My mom ordered the chicken fried rice and it was delicious! Just like a Korean restaurant back home. It was seasoned just right. My pork bulgogi was ok. I would've like the meat cut thinner so I wouldn't look all crazy when I eat it. There were raw onions and mushrooms on it as well. I would've liked them cooked a bit because I don't like raw mushrooms. It was not spicy at all though. And kind of flavor-less other than it had enough salt. The soondoobu was delicious too! I got the beef one and had the same meat issues as with the pork bulgogi. I would've liked it cut thinner as well. It would've absorbed the soup more and not be so tough when I eat it. So here's a funny story. I had never had tteokbokki before and wanted to try it. Needless to say there aren't a lot of places in the twin cities that offer it. It's been a few months since I made a trip to Minnesota, so on my way home I decided to stop back in at Hoban. Once again, I got there at a relaxed time of the day (around 4:45, so the period of time that most restaurants aren't very busy). My host was very friendly and checked in with me a few times to make sure it was all good, which it definitely was. So basically, the service was great. I got 3 dishes; the Shrimp Tempera, Haemul Bokkeum, and a to go order of Beef Kimbap. I only come to this restaurant if I'm wanting to treat myself, so it all (with a tip) came out to 76 dollars and some change. I will be eating the leftovers for the next two days at least, because the servings are enough for two people on all of these things which I forgot about that part. All were amazing. The shrimp tempera came with mushroom, onion, and sweet potato tempera as well, along with a DELICIOUS soy sauce based dip that I just adore. Side note, I snacked on the tempera I left with for the entirety of my 3 and a half hour drive home. The Haemul Bokkeum was also freaking amazing. It was a large enough portion that I barely managed to eat half of it (remember that side dishes are given with your meal so on top of my appetizer I way overdid it for a single person). It was just perfectly cooked and seasoned, even the scallops and shrimp were perfectly cooked and weren't overdone at all. Last but not least, the Kimbap I got as takeout cause I thought it would be nice to eat later. I was NOT prepared for the serving size, yet again. Just an FYI, I am not at all complaining and I love that I got the bang for my buck considering it was 19 dollars for it. It's a bit spendy but would 100% be worth getting as its own meal. I have no regrets, even if it was an expensive meal (for one person, I could have easily gotten this for two). Hoban has always come clutch with servings worth our money. Enjoy the food pics. There aren't many authentic Korean restaurants around the cities, but this is one of my favorite! It's a small place tucked away into a strip mall near the Eagan outlets but it's a great place. This was my first, and likely only, attempt at eating Korean food. I was invited by some friends from the area and knew nothing about Korean food. As I browsed through the menu, I thought to myself 'none of this seems comestible'. I asked the waiter what he recommended for someone who is not very adventurous and not a fan of really spicy food. The waiter recommended some kind of ribs. While we waited for our food, we were brought several dishes of sides. The only two things I liked were the bean sprouts and the soy beans. Eventually my ribs arrived. They looked appetizing. Spoiler: they weren't. The meat was rubbery and chewy. I tried 3 or 4 bites, but they were all equally unpleasant. I would not do this again.
