Place definitely gives nostalgia feel. Food was good, little overwhelming but nevertheless was good. Ale's and ciders were phenomenal, and service was attentive and knowledgeable. Some things to consider: this restaurant is not as immersive as I would like as a Tolkien fan. I would make it look like a grotto or bilbos hobbit hole as in the movies. They should be serving the food on plates and things that give you that Middle earth feel. It was a little underwhelming because I want to pay for the experience. If it had more to see and experience I would go back, but it's definitely something I'd really only go once to say I went. This place would be insanely successful more so if they brought the middle earth life more into your time there. Also, parking is a bit on the terrible side, but not much you can do being in that location. Food was great! Large portions at a decent price. The only downside is we had a bit of a larger party, since seating for larger parties inside is limited our wait was pretty long. The large group tables had finished eating but wanted to stay and visit so that was definitely a bummer for us. Wait was about an hour so that could be a possibility for anyone with a large group. I used to live near this restaurant and loved it for years! They would have the best customer service and the food was great! I do not eat out often but when I wanted a good meal, I would come here. Not anymore! I had not been in a while, so I decided to order a salmon burger and fries to go. When I got there they were just finishing it up, it was piping hot and like remembered. When I got home I found some paper or object on the bottom of the salmon burger after I had eaten some! Never again - threw it all away and will not be back. Saturdays and Sundays from 11-3 is brunch where you can try some amazing omelettes, pancakes, and even vegetarian breakfasts that taste amazing. Be cautious though! Overall, Hobbit Cafe is a quaint little place, neat in decorations, very friendly staff, but the food is not all that great. They do have a large selection including a massive burger that if your able to eat the whole thing, you get a free T-Shirt, it was a must try, so i got the morgoth burger, several problems right off the bat, the bacon was thick and over cooked, impossible to chew, the smoked boudin link had a ton of rice and was designed to be a filler, finally the burger was dry, i got through 1/4 of a piece of bacon before I gave up trying to eat it, i did finish the boudin, egg, avocado, egg roll, pickles and popper, but seriously couldn't do anything with the hamburger or bacon, so I just packed the rest to take home. We also ordered the Sméagol's shrimp enchiladas, very small shrimp and the sauce soaked in making the enchiladas inedible, not too happy with that dish. The fry side was ok except they put chorizo on them and that wasn't too tasty, the onion rings were as good as bar food gets. The employees were great, very friendly and gave great service. This is a unique place to visit once, but a repeat visit, not so much. read more

Traveling through Houston and decided to stop here after seeing it online for the LOTR references and mead. The whole place is LOTR themed with the menu having LOTR references and themed decor. Service was quick and we got our mead flight and food pretty quick. We got the meadfest flight, which had a sampling of 6 different meads, with highlights being a blackberry mead and an earl grey mead, all were good but strong so be ready for that We got the balrog burger which was one of their highlighted burgers and a meadle-earth burger, just replaced the goat cheese with Swiss and a side of Uruk fries (topped with queso, chorizo, and jalapenos). All were good, and the portions were also huge so we had a lot of leftovers to bring home and have for another meal (or two with the balrog burger). The burgers could have been cooked a tad less since the patties themselves were slightly dry, but the toppings made up for it, especially the mead mushrooms on the meadle-earth burger, where you could actually taste the mead! read more

Some good, some not so good. First time visit last week (December 2023), and we ordered the bacon cheeseburger, queso fries, and mixed meat (beef and chicken) quesadilla. The burger was fine, more towards the well-done side, but certainly a substantial size and good taste. The queso fries were crispy, and held up well in the bowl of queso. The quesadilla was, however, disappointing. While the filling was tasty, the tortillas themselves came out limp and soggy. I'm not sure if it was the heat/moisture of the fillings, or the juices from the cooking itself, but the tortillas had a wet texture . We ended up peeling them away and only eating the fillings. I know the restaurant has a very good history, and one dish does not make a menu, so I do plan on returning again soon - but, I'll skip the quesadilla. read more

I understand that this place has been open since 1972 and is somewhat of a local institution. I appreciate that it strives to create a thematic experience without delving into Disneyfication and tourist trap territory. However, it just left me disappointed. It just didn't feel like they were trying that hard. I'll give them due credit for the large menu with a healthier angle. There are lots of options with quirky LOTR names. They had a nice drink selection (including smoothies). The food was pretty good with a few hiccups. However, there were indicators that they just didn't care as much as a restaurant should: -Seating in a cramped back area with boxes and kegs. I understand space constraints but guests shouldn't feel like they're sitting in your storage area. -Dirty silverware that had to be sent back. -Unripe tomatoes in my boyfriend's salad. -The women's bathroom was genuinely confusing and uncomfortable. There were no doors, just curtains with some sort of island theme. It didn't look like LOTR, just some random beach scene. Random art on the walls not related to LOTR. No trash bin in my stall so someone threw their used feminine hygiene product on the floor. It just felt like the bare minimum of effort was invested in this space. -My Dwalin chicken salad sandwich was conflicting. The curried chicken salad itself was really good but the ratios were off. I upgraded the sandwich (per the menu suggestion) to include all sorts of added toppings. I assumed they'd increase the amount of chicken to accommodate the toppings but that wasn't the case. It felt like I was eating vegetables with bits of chicken. -Overall, I got the impression that the restaurant hasn't evolved much. It also didn't seem thematic enough. I saw some LOTR stuff by the front desk but once we sat down, that was it. Like I said, I appreciate that they're not taking the theme too far, into cheeseball or commercial territory. However, it just felt like they could do more to incorporate it into the whole experience. read more

My son got the Meadle Earth burger with extra goat cheese, and seasoned French fries, and I got the King Theodon's burger with onion rings. We both had the Gimli smoothie. 4 years ago I wrote a review and gave the Hobbit Cafe a 1 star review. I went back, because I did once love it there. The quality and taste of the food is back and the service is so very much improved. I love the Patio area and bring my dog(s) often, I have big dogs so one at a time. My kids love it here, my husband, even my Dad. I celebrated my birthday this year there. I'm not sorry for my review, at the time it was true. 4 years ago was so long ago. This was an interesting themed place.if you're coming in the morning, expect to wait for a while (30 mins at least) especially coming with a group of people. We went because happy hour for mimosa. Tolkien and patio fans alike will enjoy the Hobbit Cafe. It's clear that this has been a beloved spot for decades, and I'm glad to have gotten the chance to check it out. We came for a late lunch around 2pm on a Saturday (spring break) and it was busy, but in the good way - everyone was enjoying the gorgeous weather on the inviting patio and the vast selection of beers, ales, meads, ciders, etc. Everything on the menu has a fun Tolkien-themed name, which makes perusing the (extensive) menu a joy. Book readers will be happy to know there are plenty of references that did not make it into the movies (such as Tom Bombadil). Parking can be a bit tight when it's busy, especially if you have a big car. I am grateful for our server who recommended a beverage for me since I am relatively unfamiliar with beer and don't like anything too heavy. My friend and I shared the fried pickles which were delicious and each ordered the "slim" version of sandwiches - I cannot imagine how big the regular size is because the slim is huge! This has been in my Houston foodie collection for a bit. The hubby is a huge Lord of the Rings fan, and the cafe has a buffalo burger. We had to make a trip down! The cafe is super cute with the patio area, and the inside as well. Since it was the evening, the patio was lit up with cute lights, and heaters. The menu that we received was very cluttered making it hard to determine the actual base price of the buffalo burger. It indicated that a buffalo patty was $3.99 more. We both had cheese on our burgers (which was extra) and fries (also extra). As well as 2 sodas. The food was really great! Overall the whole experience was great. The only downside was the price. Since it wasn't clearly marked in the menus, it was a bit of a shock ($$), hence the 4 stars instead of the 5. I do recommend this as a good place to try once. read more

Weekends can be crowded because this establishment is micro small, even with the patio. However, The Hobbit Cafe is a treasure to Houston. The food is all LoTr inspired and is the decor. There are many better options over this one. I tried one of their burgers as they recommended. It was one of the most poorly constructed and bad tasting burgers I've eaten in quite some time. It also wasn't exactly cheap. Service was okay. Not anything noteworthy, but not terrible. The restaurant itself was very uncomfortable. It was small, cramped, and just old. Their chairs were also mismatching and wobbly. The LORT theme wasn't anything amazing. They had a few cool props but definitely not worth to visit because of them, especially considering the low quality of the food. All in all, not pleased. Even though it was packed and there was a line outside, the staff member who checked us in noticed we were huge Dallas Cowboys fan and went out of her way to get us a table near their TV screen!
