Loved this place! We had a Saltwater Red fried fish sandwich -- the fillet was almost a foot long! -- and the Half a Cluck fried chicken, and three sides. The chicken was the highlight, really tasty! So, usually at places like this, it's a restaurant at an American Legion... This seemed more like an American Legion at a restaurant. Both the barmaid and another customer told us that the fried chicken and fish were the best items on the menu, but we're really tryin' to stay away from the FRIED. So, I ordered the Oklahoma Joe sandwich and it was GREAT! The brisket was spot on, and the slaw was a PERFECT addition to the sandwich! The side of green beans was just okay. Hubby ordered the Smokey the Bird sandwich, with fries. Figured he'd ordered a healthier type entree, so deserved the fries? He gave me the bacon that came on the sandwich and it was GLORIOUS! All in all, the food was really good. The service was okay and the prices moderate. This is a place I'd make it a point to get back to. She had a work vest on was clean great personality. she told us she drove an 18 wheeler. WOW empressive. she was a lady of color. I almost asked when they were going to serve her. I Love this family owned restaurant. I always visit during my lunch break at least once a week for the past month I've been here. I get either the fried chicken or fried fish. I've tried the meatloaf as well which isn't bad. They give Generous portion for a great price. I have really no complaints here, I highly recommend. Although I think it's a little odd that they have a "daily special" but it's not anything special? Because you can order it anytime of the week and it's the same price as every other day. So I'm not sure what the purpose of having that as a special is. But any who, great place to come eat. read more

This is a full-up comfort food restaurant located within an American Legion Post. The food is going to be traditional style, but executed well. If you're a trendy food person that likes exotic flavors, well that's elsewhere, This is Grandma secret recipe cooking style. The place does get quite busy, even if you arrive early. Definitely an older crowd here that also roll with that strategy, but I still recommend arriving early if you prefer not to wait for seating. Their fried Chicken was recommended and a solid choice. I recommend the twice baked potato casserole as a side. Your second side you can pick whatever else you fancy. The service was friendly and the prices weren't bad. The beers on draft are old school, without any craft selection. The restaurant was fairly loud, and me without the luxury of a hearing aid to turn up-unlike some. They could use additional sound baffles. Regardless, once the food came, there wasn't much talking anyway. Haha. Definitely would come back for a chill lunch or dinner. read more

Love this place, nothing fancy just what some would call a dive hit its clean, comfortable and they have delicious food . The fried chicken is their specialty and that's what I had. 4 pieces fried to a golden juicy brown and served with choice of 2 sides for $9.99 delicious and more than I could eat. Hubby had the catfish plate and comes with 3 large pieces of fish and 2 sides and he said it was great.?They have a full bar and have plenty of TVs to watch sports . Best time to get there is early before the crowds arrive and you can enjoy what they offer. read more

So, I've been to Hobo's over a dozen times and always gotten the fried chicken. Their fried chicken is unbeatable and absolutely the best I've ever had. Tonight, we stopped in with the sole purpose of trying the pizza. We got The Tradition which was served sheet pan style with provel cheese and plenty of toppings. While the crust was very thin and flaky, it stayed perfectly crispy. It. Was. Amazing. We also splurged and ordered the breaded wings tossed in buffalo sauce. I had a feeling they'd be delicious after my past experiences with their fried chicken, but man, these wings far exceeded my expectations. Best wings I've ever had! Nice and spicy, crisp breading and juicy chicken. The service is always quick, friendly, and accommodating. Michelle, our waitress tonight, was top notch. Can't wait to go back, although, it'll be a little more difficult to decide what to order now! read more

Left over pizza I tried to revive in a 450 degree oven at home. The flesh picked up pizza, came way too gooey and undercooked. I did not order half-baked. So disappointed . This is a regular pizza these days? We enjoyed Nolls Pizza and Rob Noll is great, but this pizza has gone down hill. It was messy in the box, it was not even cut right! Hobos is as good as the great reviews say. We stopped on the way back from Bloomington, IN to KC - grabbed gas at the Quiktrip and scouted Hobos on Yelp. We got the catfish, fried chicken and the Smokey Bird (turkey) sandwich. All freshly made, including the sides (twice baked potato casserole, green beans, slaw, home made chips). What a fun place! We stopped in for lunch on a Wednesday, driving home to Indiana from a trip out west. I read on Yelp that Wednesday was fried chicken special day. The place was completely packed! We opted to sit at the bar which was open seating. The bartender took our drink order immediately, even though she was extremely busy. She was very efficient, answered all of our questions, and even took time to chat with us. Of course we ordered the chicken and as others have said, found it to be hot, crispy, and moist. The sides were delicious as well. We thoroughly enjoyed the slaw as it is vinegar-based, not swimming in mayo! Not what we expected at all, when it was recommended to us. The restaurant rents space on the first floor of an American Legion hall. Decor is typical American Legion /VFW hall - combination of patriotic, military and bar. Basic tables and chairs in arrangements that can seat a group of two or a group of over 20. Service is VERY prompt. Food comes quickly and is hot and very good. Primarily BBQ, with enough options that families will be able to find something for even the pickiest of little ones and teens. Serving sizes are large. I had a pulled pork sandwich on a bun with coleslaw. My husband had a club wrap sandwich and fries. We enjoyed our meal enough that we brought home their 8 piece fried chicken with 3 sides for dinner (so far 2 meals out of it). We were there for a very late lunch, so we were able to get seated right away. Apparently they are busy enough at regular meal times that it may take awhile to get seated. They have a large parking lot with a municipal parking lot across the street so parking is not a problem. You can enter from rear parking lot or front of the building. Short, sweet and to the point. The fried chicken is where it's at. Get it, you won't be disappointed. Very nice decor and gives you the local hometown feeling. Very professional staff and cognizant to ensure all guidelines are adhered to. My wife had the jalapeño burger and comes in a very hearty size. So we walk in at 11:25 on a Friday morning and the place is full with a waiting line. Being our first time here, we weren't sure what to do because there was no host/hostess at the entrance. We then noticed a hallway to the back of the dining room with a line of people. Walking through the dining area and still not sure who to speak to, we finally see a sign that instructs customers to put your own name and number in your party on the waiting list. The line moved along pretty quickly and we were seated about 20 minutes later. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful. I got the "famous" fried chicken because it said it was famous. My wife got fried catfish ordering an extra piece of fish for me. The chicken was some of the best fried chicken I've eaten, but I don't think THE best ever. The catfish was very good as well. My two sides were BBQ baked beans and twice baked potato casserole. The beans were pretty good and the casserole had good flavor but somehow seemed old; not fresh. The decor is Americana and military mixed with bar neons and TVs showing sporting events. It's quite an eclectic collection. Everything looked like it had been there a while. Now that I'm not a rookie anymore and know where to go, and what to do to get in, I would go back for the chicken and maybe try it in buffalo wing form.
