Having heard how great the food was at Hobo's, we went to the location. Luckily, someone told us the "procedure" to get into the place: go in side door, walk toward dining area, sign in with name, get in line. Without the kindness of the stranger, we would have stood in line for no reason for over an hour. However, the food was amazing: fried catfish, pizza and sandwich. Knowing the routine, we returned for our second visit. It was awful, not amazing. The fried pickles were so salty, they had to rinsed in my water to be edible. So I honestly didn't even know this place existed but my St. Charles friend suggested we meet here on Sunday for a late lunch. Ok, I'm game. I didn't even know this little stretch of old down town St. Peters was there. Never been and it's literally adjacent to Highway 70! The parking lot at the American Legion was completely filled. There were two smokers on the side of the building and there was a pleasant smoke smell. I walked in the front near the bar but I think you could get in either way. The place was filled! I noticed most people eating either fried chicken or pizza. I had to go for the pizza. It claims to be based on Halls Ferry Inn's pizza recipe from North County. I ordered a pepperoni and bacon pizza and my lunch date went with the fried chicken. When my pizza came out it was huge and looked absolutely delicious. It was! Best pizza I've had in as long as I can remember! If you like St. Louis style pizza you need to head to St. Peters. The service is friendly and I will be back for fried chicken and BBQ but let's face it, you know I'll end up with pizza! *So you may ask what's different about North County St. Louis pizza versus any other. Good question. The entire pizza is a rectangle instead of a circle then its cut into square pieces. The crust is very crispy and has some air bubbles in it. The cheese is usually a blend of provel (a St. Louis staple) and other soft cheeses that melt well. I have lived in St. Louis my entire life but didn't know this existed up until I was roughly 30. Lots of people love their fried chicken. It's a little too dry and over cooked for me. Personally I like the fried pork chop. The reason for the 3 stars is I am not a fan of their side dishes. I don't like onions and the sides almost all have onions. My dad thinks the fish is just blah. It's not bad food. It's just not cravable to me. And it's a shame. Wonderful small-town place to get great comfort food! You don't have to be a member of the American Legion to eat; just come prepared for a big meal! He had the 2 pieces of fried chicken / half slab of ribs dinner and I had the slow-cooked BBQ pork steak. I have been begging for pork steaks for a month - this place helped settle down that need with tangy, fall-off-the-bone delicious pork steaks! Our sides were great: coleslaw, twice-baked mashed potatoes, baked beans. We will come back here to try the catfish and also the pizza! read more

The wait times can be quite long if you have a party larger than 4 and you are dining at a peak meal time. 1 Con-you have to stand in a long hallway with no place to sit while you wait. 1 Pro-which is the most important, the food is delicious we frequent this place often with family and have yet to be disappointed when it come to food! They are known for the fried chicken which is good but pass on that and get the Cajun fried catfish. It was excellent. Only drawback is the crowd and getting seating. Parking isn't bad if you know the town. read more

Been coming to this place for a year now and we come here at least twice a week. Our servers are always good to us and the food is delicious!!! Fried chicken half a cluck meal is a great price and the chicken is bomb! I don't go anywhere but here for fried chicken. It's that good. We were new to St Louis last year and this was our first out to eat venue. We were very impressed. Really good food. We each got something very different and everyone was very happy with what they got. However, we went there a few days ago wanting to try again and they were closed. It looks like they my have been flooded in a recent storm. Really sorry to see that and hope they are able to open again soon! read more

Don't even know where to begin. My God, the chicken is so good. Chicken is to die for. Cooked perfectly and so juicy. Wife had the tenderloin which was huge! Was recommended to me by several of my STL family, (coworkers). I walked in, loved that is was pretty full, 830pm. I was able to sit quickly since I'm alone. I loved see the decor, I have a kid in army and it made me feel great.. Had Morgan, hopefully spelled right, as waitress. She was awesome, knew when to check up on me and when to let me be, haven't had service like that since left LV. Order the fried fish nuggets, side was fries and green beans. When she asked which condiment I would like, tartar, cocktail or hot, I just said yes. The tartar sauce... I don't know if it's just been a while, but if that is from a jar, I want to buy it, it has a flavor punch. The fries, had great flavor, great crunch outside and the soft inside. Didn't know I'd been missing that also. Ok, the green beans, amazing, I always have low expectations for veggies, I wanted to eat them all. Now the fish nuggets, when I looked at them, I thought they looked like they'd be heavy but nope, lightly breading, some pieces have the little extra for the crunch some people enjoy, flavorful. If I have time before I go home, I'll be going back here, if not next time I'm in town, I will be there. Hobos has tasty food at reasonable prices! The Cajun chicken salad has perfectly grilled chicken strips atop Spring mix lettuce. And the fried chicken... incredible....the closest I've ever found to Romine's (a long-time St. Louis tradition that has sadly closed.). This place is always crowded, but worth the wait. They do a good job getting you seated and served as efficiently as possible. Good little place. Has a very old fashioned small town mom and pop restaurant feel to it. Chicken was juicy and very crispy; breading a bit bland for my taste but not bad. Cole slaw was vinegar based and decent, baked beans were fairly average. Prices are very reasonable, and service is extremely friendly and attentive. The place was pretty busy on a Saturday lunch, and I still got my food extremely quick. Lots of other things on the menu looked good, and I look forward to trying them out; but had to try the chicken first as it was the thing they are most famous for, and it wasn't my bag. read more
