We've lived in St Peters area for years and just recently found out about this place. Decided to go. When we first walked in it was like, "What have we done?" The place is rather rundown in appearance. For first timers you don't realize that the sign-in sheet is across the room from the front entrance, and no one is there to direct you. You have to walk through the restaurant with a "lost look" on your face, and then somebody realizes that you need help. But, it was very busy (which meant "good food"). Anyway, we all got the fried chicken and it was great. Some of the best we've had in the entire St. Louis area. Portions are large. Prices are good. Wait staff very nice. Since that time we have been back several times and have enjoyed each visit. The only time we were a little disappointed was with the catfish fillets. They were thin and cooked to the point where they were almost "chewy". We'll probably try the catfish again or switch to cod next time and hope for a better experience. Will try to write update. Originally introduced to me as a "biker bar" I found myself hesitant to dine here, as this is not the typical atmosphere I look for in a dining experience. Upon entering this establishment, I was greeted with a cacophony of people dining packed in shoulder to shoulder. It seemed a mixed crew of people, trending older, but many families were present and having a great time. There was a lengthy wait for a seat, crammed into the narrow hallway before the restrooms, anxiously awaiting a seat. I did find myself getting agitated about the wait, preparing to leave. Finally, it was my party's turn to be seated, and despite being asked to share a large table with another party, we were greeted with friendly service, great prices and delicious food. Most everything on the menu was deep fried, but quality of ingredients was top notch, and all members of my party were full and satisfied. I would recommend to others, if you are looking for some delicious fried catfish, or other fried meat type, and do not mind a wait, it will be worth the while. Simple food done well and reasonably priced. You won't find better catfish in St. Louis. As matter of fact, I've eaten a lot of catfish all over the south and Hobos more than holds it's own. Their fried chicken ranks right up there too. The BBQ is also good and obviously isn't rushed in the smoker or boiled in sauce because the meat is tender but not mushy. Good bar prices, too. Don't tell my mom, but Hobos has the BEST fried chicken I've ever had! We are visiting for a soccer tournament and tried lunch on Saturday, between games. My son had the pulled pork sandwich - said it was amazing. He wasn't too impressed with the macaroni salad because it had a different flavor to it. I had the 2 piece fried chicken with cole slaw and twice baked mashed potato casserole. The cole slaw was an oil and vinegar and it was delicious. The potato casserole was to die for! The chicken and potatoes had some spice to them, but I love spicy food. Our waitress was so nice and friendly. Terrible service from one of the angriest and unpleasant servers I've met. After being seated we ordered an appetizer. 45 minutes later we had not received it. When we asked chance are currently "it will be out when it's ready". An hour and 10 minutes after we set our dinner finally arrived. Have enjoyed Hobo,s for years but that ended yesterday 10/25/2019. My group was there for our usual Thursday lunch and before we could order the manager came to our table to inform us that we had to be very clear about our ordering and that the screw up that happened the week before resulted in the waitress paying $17.00 out of her own pocket. He felt we were not diligent when ordering. So let's examine what happened the week before. I ordered the spicy chili (do not like the un spicy chili at all). My bowl came out regular chili. Asked the waitress if I could have spicy. Next bowl same thing regular chili - tried to doctor with hot sauce but not the same. Third time got the spicy chili as originally ordered. Two others at table ordered spicy one on foot long chili dog (came out fine) and one with cup of spicy (you guessed it. Not spicy) after seeing my problems he just ate it even though he prefers spicy. After thinking about the manager and his inappropriate actions I just had to find him and try to understand his previous comments. We that didn't go well. After explaining as above, instead of realizing his kitchen staff were not deligent I got a sermon about chili being in two different locations and his talking was to help insure the prices stayed low. Decided to give Hobos a try based upon positive reviews. Was concerned about the comments about cigarette smoke because I can't enjoy a meal if the smoke is too prominent. When we walked in it was busy with little available seating. The smoke was evident but not overwhelming. It's a seat yourself place and we took two open seats at a table of 6 by the door (was concerned the smoke would be heavier the farther in we went. Customers were really friendly. Had the catfish nuggets and they were good as was the rest of our meal. Overall, food was good, service was good and prices were good. Went in here for dinner tonight. It was packed which is a good sign on a Friday evening. As busy as it was, our waitress was great. Very prompt and kept the refills coming. I got the Rail Rider sandwich which is their version of a Reuben. It was delicious. And the twice baked potato casserole is amazing. Big portions, great food, good prices. This place is an okay option. The food is so so. There is a lot of fried food on the menu. On the other hand the server was great. She was quick and checked on us 2-3 times. We also received are food in about 10 minutes (11 to be precise) and we have 6 people. If you go to Hobo's and don't wanna wait try to get in right at 11:00. The place fills fast. After many people had recommended, I finally stopped in for a late lunch to try the Friday fried Catfish special and was not at all disappointed. Two MASSIVE filets & two sides for $8, had good flavor & provided excellent value. The service (from the bartender) was prompt, friendly & my iced tea was kept full. A couple other menu items that I witnessed being delivered, that looked delicious were the $10 18oz BBQ pork steak, onion rings, & breaded buffalo wings. For those looking for lighter fare, the salads & wraps also looked very good and provided substantial portion for the price. As others have mentioned, this is a smoking establishment (which does not bother me like it does some), however I will mention the smell wasn't overbearing & there are a handful of outdoor tables, as well as carryout service available. The only think keeping Hobo's from earning the elusive 5th star was the side items. Maybe I didn't select the best ones, but the fries & green beans seemed underwhelming compared to the awesome catfish filets. I'll give a couple of the other sides a try next time in hope of adding that 5th star. read more
