Went to a charming restaurant the other night! It is called Hoexter's. It is sandwiched ( no pun intended) between Lex and Third on 82nd Street. It is shaped like a railroad flat and each room has unique wall paper giving rise to special ambiance in each room. The tables are very closed to one another and the noise was quite loud. The food was delicious! I had miso cod with was swimming in a wonderful corn froth. My companion had a crabmeat salad which she said was wonderful! But, the best part was dessert! The hype was real. The appetizers stole the show. The burger was very good - fries were disappointing though. Wish the dining room was a little bit larger - it felt cramped. Service was good which was expected based on how expensive things were. Would return but won't be running back as there are other places in the city that I think I could great a similar burger. Stopped by on Friday night for a quick date night and got lucky that they had a one table left outside. We would have loved to sit inside because it was so beautiful and such a nice vibe but we were happy to be seated right away. Our server was super friendly but service is definitely slower outside since there are only 3 small tables. As for the food, we didn't get too much but the standout was definitely the cheeseburger. It was juicy, cheesy, and perfect! Fries that came on the side were also crispy and delicious. The steak tartare appetizer tasted fresh. Chicken Parmesan was decent- I liked the cheese but the salt was a bit uneven throughout the dish. A friend and I dined at Hoexter's on a Sunday evening. We had dinner reservations for 5pm and unfortunately showed 15 minutes late. They were still accommodating however sat us at a tiny round table. My complaint is no one answered the phone starting from 12pm, I tried to call to change the reservation and/or make them aware of our tardiness. Other than that, I absolutely recommend the food. We enjoyed our evening at Hoexters. The restaurant is dark and intimate (on the smaller side) and very busy, with a lively, trendy vibe. Even though we had a reservation, we still waited about 25-30 minutes for our table, so we grabbed drinks at the bar--worth it, because the dirty martinis were delicious. Food-wise, we had salads, steak, fries, and burgers. I have to say, I wasn't expecting the smashburger to be as good as it was--it really surprised me in the best way. Fries did come out super salty, but they did remake them for us. Service was generally pretty good, but we were disappointed that one person in our group had to wait an extra 15-20 minutes for her burger while everyone else's food came out, and no one from the staff really acknowledged the delay. Prices were on the higher side. But to be expected for any big city. Overall, it's a fun, trendy spot that's great for a date or a group night out. Despite a few hiccups, we'd definitely check it out again if we're in the area. Tip: A reservation is a must! read more

This place has been on my radar since it opened. I finally got the chance to try it last Tuesday. I was very impressed! Long narrow restaurant. Very dark in there. Tartan walls. Very cozy. Staff was incredibly polite. Our waiter was super helpful in explaining the menu. I had a frantic day, so I ended up playing it safe and ordering the burger. Man it was good. Fries were like McDs and perfect. Burger had a ton of flavor. For $29, I think it was pretty good for the money. The chicken parm I tried was good, too. The dry gin martinis were great. The waiter even fixed my drink order when I didn't like something the first go around. It is a neighborhood spot for me, so I will definitely be back! read more

Made reservations in advance and was seated right away. For apps we got the bread and beef tartar, both were delicious but the bread definitely lived up to the expectations. The cheesesteak and fries were also very good! For dessert we got the sundae which I definitely recommend. The staff were very friendly and they were very attentive. I decided to try Hoexter's before heading to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. My friend was visiting from Houston, and I knew it would take a lot to impress her culinarily. We arrived about an hour before the end of the brunch shift. They sat us at a table almost immediately even though we didn't have a reservation. My companion really enjoyed the decor: art deco. Our server Miriam was very friendly and knowledgeable about the food. We ordered the pancakes to share. I ordered the Eggs Benedict. The latter was tasty. I cleaned my plate, which included the side salad. My friend really enjoyed the pancake, she stopped and beckoned me to finish the rest before she consumed the whole thing. That was very tasty, buttery savory and sweet. We had drinks as well. I had the Bloody Mary made spicy. The balance of flavors was evident. Overall, I would confidently recommend this establishment to any and all near the Metropolitan Museum. read more

A gem on the upper east side! Really was a great experience. We started with the caviar and potato chips that came with French onion dip -- a great compliment to the caviar. The Gorgonzola bread was next and is a must have. Followed by the double smashed burger which was really good. The ribs came with the cornbread and both were amazing. The Branzino was absolutely delicious and so unique - might be one of my favorites in the city. A spur of the moment date night. We were able to grab a table on a weekday. It was a small round table inside by the window. It worked well since we wanted to share our entree anyway. My husband got an espresso martini, which was okay, not the best one he has tried, probably mid-tier. We tried their famous smash burger. I would say, unless you are a voracious eater, try to split the burger. It can be a lot for one person. I split it with my husband and we both agreed that half a burger is enough. The burger was cooked very well and had great flavor, a little bit on the greasy side. The fries were slim, fried to a great crisp, and very enjoyable. The broccoli was ordered so we would have some vegetables for the night. However, nothing to write home about. The meal was quite expensive, especially since we essentially shared everything. (Burger for $29, Cocktail for ~$21, and probably half a head of broccoli for $14.) Probably will not return. read more

Hoexter's is a welcome addition to the neighborhood! I visited for dinner and was pleased with my meal. The service was very prompt and the server was friendly and helpful. My water glass remained filled. Ordered: Sourdough bread with butter ($8)- I was a little frustrated that bread didn't come with the meal and that it was $8 but this bread and butter were very good. Would I order this again for $8, probably not. St. Louis BBQ ribs ($42)- The portion size was very generous and the ribs were very tasty! Not the most dainty thing to eat but they were very good. It was served with coleslaw that I wasn't particularly fond and a very buttery warm cornbread. Ribeye steak sandwich with cheese (like a Philly cheesesteak) ($42)- This item was a special. While this sandwich tasted like a very very good Philly cheesesteak, I don't think it was worth the $42 price tag. I'm sure the meat was very high quality but the predominant flavor was the melted provolone and American cheese. It came with very good fries on the side. This sandwich was a fun idea and it was delicious, I just didn't think it was worth the price. I've heard great things about their cheeseburger so I'll have to come back sometime to try it! read more

The Gorgonzola garlic bread stands the F out. After your bread is gone, dredge a pile of fries into that epic sauce. You're welcome for that pro tip! Pork Milanese is moist and juicy. The sundae is WOW - eat and be a kid again! The malt ice cream on that apple crisp is nostalgia in a scoop! And the cocktails, are simply perfect! I've been here a few times and it's pretty good. If the entrees were 15-20% cheaper, I would rate it 4 stars but honestly they are so overpriced I have to bring it down a star. The staff were all very nice and competent. The aesthetics are good - very cool and moody. I love all the wallpaper. Though I will say the booth seats in the dining room need some work - you sink so far down that it's uncomfortable and you end up way lower than the people on the chairs. The food is decent to good. The French onion soup, specialty bread, and salads have all been good but not particularly amazing. The entrees I've had have all been fine but just SO expensive for what you're getting. Also a couple of times they have been SUPER salty. It's more a place for the atmosphere if you live nearby than a place to go for the meal. read more

Right off the bat, I had a feeling walking into this place that this would be one of those quintessential New York gems... and it was. All of the cocktails and food were great. A martini with a caviar bump on top?! Yes, please. For food, we had: - DO NOT MISS the gorgonzola bread. Not sure what to do with that remaining sauce after? Highly recommend ordering a side of fries and mixing them around inside, so that the sauce coats the fries. Pro move for sure. - The cheese plate, salumi plate, and artichoke were all delicious. I'm glad the artichoke wasn't covered in gluten. - I love that the servers brought us ice cream and espresso, so we could make our own affogatos for the end of the meal. I and my friend went for some cozy sips and soup one cool evening. We were both craving French onion soup and some sips. I was so excited to try Hoexter's, but I've never been more disappointed. My chicory salad was good, but everything went downhill with the main course. My husband and I split the salmon and the chicken parmesan, and both were truly inedible. The salmon was overwhelmingly salty--so much so that I couldn't take more than a bite. My husband offered me the chicken parmesan instead, but unfortunately it was just as bad: a sloppy, overly salty mess with no redeeming qualities. Solid food with great service in a tight space. Hence, the lack of availability on OpenTable. Although when you select bar seating they do have about 4 tables around the bar that are included. Didn't feel like a cocktail, though each one made looked absolutely amazing. Pricing is extremely steep on a few dishes but well worth on most others. read more
