This restaurant is elegant, without being pretentious, and, while the atmosphere here is laid back and relaxed, everything operates with precision that just looks easy. I've been here once before, many years ago, and the mushroom soup was so wonderful it haunted me ever since. Yes, I was very excited when I finally got the opportunity to come back to Jojo, and it still exceeded all of my expectations. No mushroom soup on the menu, this time, but the sweet pea soup was just as exquisite, and, it too, is now etched into my memory. The marinated duck breast was simply divine. I always pick the duck if it's on the menu, but, this was, by far, the best duck I've ever eaten. Anthony, our waiter, was awesome, and his recommendation to match the duck with the Petit-Roy burgundy was perfect, as was the Rhubarb Tart. JoJo was HoHum. We chose JoJo to celebrate our anniversary and, disappointingly, found the food to be aggressively mediocre. I crave salt but both the Watermelon gazpacho and sea bass were over salted even for my taste buds. The sea bass's tomato coulis lacked depth. Water glasses were not refilled during the entire meal until we finished dessert. The staff seemed joyless. A poor performance for a $250 dinner. The manager did comp us $40 even oven my strong objections that we weren't asking for one. By then, it was too late to rescue the evening. read more

We came to JoJo for Valentine's Day after not eating her for more than 10 years. We were definitely not disappointed with the holiday menu which usually leave much to be desired. My wife made this reservation three weeks in advance and was genuinely excited about the night. We arrived on time and asked to sit upstairs, but were placed in a corner table literally blocked off by a wall, away from the rest of the dining room, even though there were open tables in the middle of the floor. It felt like we were being tucked out of sight from the start. We ordered a beer and a seafood salad to begin. The salad was mostly avocado with barely any seafood -- underwhelming and overpriced for a Jean-Georges restaurant. We then ordered chicken and a cheeseburger. An hour later, still no food. During that time we watched another table be served appetizers, dinner, and dessert while our server never returned with the wine list my wife asked for and never once checked on us. Eventually another waiter brought my wine and said he'd check on the food, but by that point we had already been sitting there nearly an hour with no communication. So we got up and left. No apology from the server. No manager. Nothing. When you're spending $200-$300 at a restaurant like this, basic service shouldn't be too much to expect. The way we were seated in a hidden corner and then completely ignored all night honestly made us question whether we were being treated differently because my wife is Puerto Rican. I've had the lobster, steak, and salmon here, and all of it's been consistently well done. The lobster is clean and simple, the steak hits that classic comfort note, and the salmon is always light and reliable. A neighborhood staple. nothing too flashy, but that's the point. I get why people end up going all the time it's just an easy yes. read more

We made a reservation in advance for a Sunday brunch and we were seated right away once we arrived. For appetizers we ordered a lettuce wrap. For entrees we ordered burgers and the chicken and potato. We really enjoyed everything and their non alcoholic drinks were very good. We also finished off with a chocolate cake which was very delicious too. The staff were very friendly and checked up on us often. Me and my dad came here for a celebratory dinner and it didn't disappoint. The space is beautifully tucked away in a brownstone on the UES, and has great ambiance. The service was attentive, but not overly fussy and gave good recommendations. We ordered the burrata to start which was excellent. We then ordered the sea bass which was delightful and the lobster, which was truly decadent (though on the smaller side). For dessert, we ordered the Apple pie and the warm chocolate cake and both were very good. I would definitely come back here again to try out their brunch menu or for dinner another time. read more

Snagged a last-minute reservation with a friend last night. We decided to do the restaurant week dinner menu. I started off with the fluke sashimi. It was refreshing, but nothing mind blowing. Next, I went with the salmon hollandaise. Compared to my friends, chicken dish, my portion was much smaller, with minimal sides, and the plating was very underwhelming. I had a chance to try my friend's chicken and it tasted a little too salty for my liking. The dessert was really great. I ended up with the chocolate lava cake and salted caramel ice cream. I could've easily eaten that whole dessert. It was really exactly what you'd want if you were craving a chocolate forward dessert. The salted caramel ice cream cut the richness of the lava cake. The restaurant entrance is on the bottom level of a brownstone esq small building. read more

I had dinner at JoJo this past Saturday night after visiting some of the museums on the UES, and it was a great meal. JoJo is Jean-Georges Vongerichten's first restaurant (opened in 1991). JoJo was his mother's childhood nickname for him. The restaurant is beautiful yet comfortable (wonderfully casual for such a nice place), and the service was outstanding. But the food and drink is really what blew me away. I started my meal with their Olive Oil Washed Martini, which was fantastic. Then I went on to order entirely too much food for one person. I started with the fluke tartare (with chile crumbs, cucumber, and lime). It was fresh and light and with just a tiny bit of spice from the chile. A great start to a meal. Then I had the black pepper crab dumplings (with sugar snap peas and sweet soy sauce), which were TO DIE FOR. Incredible dumplings. I'd go back to order them again. For my main, I was tempted by several dishes, but ultimately decided on the Faroe Island Salmon (with mushroom seasoning, roasted maitake mushrooms, spring peas, and miso-mustard emulsion). A lovely spring dish and beautifully cooked piece of salmon, but I did wish the emulsion packed a little more of a punch (I didn't get miso or mustard from it). And then, because I just couldn't stop myself, I got a dessert: strawberries with coconut yogurt poppy seed sorbet and crispy meringues. Honestly, this dessert was just a delight. Light, refreshing, gorgeous. I'd eat it again right now. A glass of wine recommended by the server to have with the salmon plus an espresso with dessert (I was heading to an almost three hour play) filled out the meal. Don't let location and the Chef's name scare you away. Jojo is very casual and low key. Affordable, cozy and bright with a bit of an orange tint. I was lucky to find this under a "brunch" search and even luckier getting a reservation, on a"the Sunday before Christmas. The menu is small, but great variety; something for everyone. We started with double espressos. Perfect on the coldest day of December 2024. They were so good, that I had to order another. She ordered the Eggs Benedict and I had Pancakes. Both entree's were excellent, and the portions were bountiful. A nice, chatty old man sitting next to us, saw my pancakes and decided he wanted those too. We had one Chocolate Chip Cookie for dessert. Such a great experience all around. The plates and cutlery they use is so unique. Great old china, with floral patterns. The best part, none of the plates match. But it works so well. The waiter was the most calm, laid back, sloth like, smiley man I've ever met. But, was so efficient and never missed a beat. JoJo is a unique combination of upscale dining without being too flashy. From the outside, it almost just looks like a regular apartment building with a very small sign hanging that says "JoJo". Upon entering, you will immediately notice the simple yet elegant and intimate environment. The lighting is slightly dimmed and the decor is modern and aesthetic. Each table has a little candle to create a cozy vibe. There was a decent amount of people but it did not feel crowded whatsoever. There is a ground floor as well as an upper floor with additional seating. As for the food, I ordered the Nut and Seed Crusted Black Sea Bass ($48), which was surprisingly small - just one thin piece of fish with a bit of assorted veggies. Although the fish was cooked well with a good flavor, I don't think it was worth the steep price just based on the portion size. On the other hand, the Crispy Skin Organic Chicken ($40), was quite a large portion size, with two hefty pieces of chicken. The chicken was juicy and tender. The skin was nicely crisped. It came with some fried potatoes and onions, which were tasty as well. My one suggestion would be that they should pair this with some sort of sauce to coat / dip the chicken, since the inside of the thick pieces of meat could have used some additional flavor. For dessert, we got the Warm Chocolate Cake with Vanilla Ice Cream ($15). This was delicious with a gooey warm chocolate sauce inside the lava cake to complement the cool ice cream. They were also nice and gave us a "Happy Birthday" sign and candle to celebrate my girlfriend's birthday. To drink, we got the Raspberry Lychee Bellini ($16), which was very tasty and fruity. Regarding the service, our waiter was friendly and the service speed was faster than expected. It did take him a while to check in with us after getting our food though. Overall, I would highly recommend JoJo if you are looking for a nice intimate dinner in the Upper East Side without being as hard to get a reservation as some of the other high-end restaurants. read more

This is a cute upscale restaurant on the east side. The building it's located in is pretty nondescript and looks almost like a house. I came for brunch with a friend with a reservation and we were seated very quickly. The restaurant wasn't full so we probably didn't need that reservation. Our server was nice and attentive. I was chugging water and my glass was constantly refilled in a timely manner. I got the pancakes and my friend got the eggs Benedict with ham. The food was good although on the pricy side. The decor is classy and the atmosphere is intimate. I was seated on the first floor and it looked like there may be another floor for customers above. okay last minute came here for dinner for restaurant week during the summer ona weeknight. it wasn't packed, but certainly was not empty either. there was even a duo patrons dining outside on the manhattan dusk. a quiet street on the UES will leave unsuspecting pedestrians unbothered as the restaurant seamlessly blends into its surrounding townhouses. go down a small set of stairs to a white door of what seems like a (very nice) home'sbasement. the entrance and bar area is super quaint, with only a handful of seats and no one sitting there (perhaps to maintain the feng shui of the place lol). it was all very dimly lit we were seated in the back at arguably one of the worst seats in the house. close to the kitchen and bathrooms where there is a lot of foot traffic. i was surprised at how small the restaurant was, at least this portion. there was a refined couple that was sat next to us and then they got up to go upstairs shortly after they sat down. i was puzzled, but i guess that's the more exclusive side of the 'staurant . the drinks were really good and refreshing. perfect for the summer. the meal itself though was just average and dare i say even below average? our server diminishingly took our orders and even messed up giving me the chicken instead of the salmon and didn't believe me when i corrected her saying that she gave me the wrong food. they then rechecked on the computer and realized i was right. there proceeded to be 20 ish minute wait for my meal while my friend was already basically done with hers. i did get another comp drink from that but it was just not a perfect dining experience the bathroom was also a bit small and overflowing with papers when i went. clearly they are either understaffed or their waitstaff is inefficient/ineffective. kind of disappointing from a JG restaurant -- i preferred nougatine much much more!! read more

If someone asked me how much I love French cuisine, I'd say "more than anything." And if they inquired why I fell in love with it, I'd say it was because of Jean-Georges. On this recent trip back to New York, the main thing I had planned with my fiancée, who came from Japan, was a Jean-Georges tour. We started with dinner at ABC Kitchen the night before, followed by breakfast at Nougatine the next morning, and planned to have dinner at JoJo that evening. During our short stay in New York, we aimed to have all our meals in the Jean-Georges style. ABC Kitchen and Nougatine did not disappoint me at all. The same sense of wonder and quality I experienced before was still there, and it made a great impression on my fiancée who was experiencing it for the first time. She loved it. August 3, 2024, 7 PM. In fact, I planned to propose to her at JoJo. So, when I made the reservation, I requested a good table. However, it was a Saturday night, so I understand. Despite my request, our table wasn't that great. I called over the waitress and asked to be moved to the second floor. They were quite busy, and it's possible they forgot my request. If they had just told me they were too full or too busy, I would have appreciated it, but instead, I waited for 20 minutes for a response that never came. They were that busy. It took 30 minutes for the appetizer and 50 minutes for the main course to arrive. Waiting is painful but bearable. However, a few incidents during the meal completely disheartened me about proposing at JoJo that night. The warm shrimp salad is my absolute favorite dish at Jean-Georges. I've tried to recreate it at home several times, so I have a special attachment to it. But the shrimp I tasted at JoJo this time lacked the magic. The melt-in-your-mouth texture was gone, replaced by a common, unremarkable texture. It was quite sad that my fiancée didn't enjoy my favorite dish. I told her I would make it for her at home next time. We ordered wine. Since we aren't heavy drinkers, we opted for a glass of Domaine Mazilly Pinot Noir, priced at around $35. However, the Pinot Noir came in a small house wine Bordeaux glass. It was not only a small pour for the price, but I never expected to drink Burgundy wine from such a glass. I assumed they might not have Pinot Noir glasses, which can happen. But then I saw the customers next to us drinking The Paring Pinot Noir, an $88 bottle, from proper Pinot Noir glasses. I was shocked. When I pointed this out to the waitress, she said they don't provide Pinot Noir glasses for wine by the glass. That response was quite a shock to me. It's Pinot Noir, after all... served in a regular glass because it's by the glass? At Jean-Georges? That was very surprising. The final blow was the sparkling water I ordered. It was so busy that my sparkling water came at room temperature. I'm not sure how many people enjoy warm sparkling water, but I certainly don't. I requested ice and poured the water over it, just to enjoy it cold. But they confused my sparkling water with their tap water and ended up refilling our glasses with tap water, mixing it with the last of my sparkling water. JoJo is a place I hold dear, and I had intended to propose there, but I felt so disheartened. After waiting 50 minutes for the main course, I asked for it to be packed to-go, and we quickly left the restaurant. I have many good memories from before, so this one experience won't lead me to boycott JoJo, but I do feel it failed to become a special place for my fiancée. P.S. I proposed to her at home, and it was perfect. We are getting married soon. read more

Our visit on a Saturday, right as the doors opened for dinner, was a delightful initiation into the culinary realm of this establishment. Though not big, the restaurant boasts a charm that spans at least two cozy floors. The decor, with its elegant simplicity, appealed to my senses from the moment I stepped inside. The service, to put it simply, was exceptional. Our dining experience commenced with the Warm Seafood Salad, a testament to the freshness of the ocean's bounty. What truly elevated this dish was the intriguing blend of the Citrus-Shallot dressing, which harmonized beautifully with the seafood and avocado, striking a flawless balance between sourness and tanginess. Moving on to the mains, we ordered both the Seabass and the Crispy Skin Organic Chicken. Each dish exuded its own unique appeal, with the chicken deserving special mention for its generous portion size without compromising on tenderness or moisture. i thought the food here was very nice and tasty. it's a little bit pricey, but what isn't in the city these days? ambience is nice, warm lighting and seating is not cramped. we were seated right away for our week night reservation. each day there are some specials that you can actually find posted on their website as well. we got 3 of the salads to start, kale with the six minute egg, the beet salad, and the burrata. given beets were in season, that was my favorite, but all was good. the crispy chicken was fantastic. so warming and cozy, felt like elevated beautiful comfort food. the potatoes were so full of flavor and perfectly cooked, the skin on the chicken was indeed crispy, and i loved the dill all over. i would definitely be back for this chicken! read more

I have had my eye on JoJo for a couple years now. Decided to come by myself recently on a solo date, and I have to applaud this establishment. Despite it being a full house, they were able to accommodate me in some of the outside seating, which was beautifully decorated. Service was amazing - I literally had 3!! separate staff check on me to make sure my order was taken, my water was refilled etc. Now for the food - I can tell why this restaurant is Michelin rated. I got the crispy chicken, which was very hearty and probably some of the most tender chicken I've ever had. I could see myself eating more of this dish in the fall/winter months. Treated myself to some of the chocolate cake and cappuccino, which was absolutely decadent and the perfect amount of chocolate. With research we found this place as a highly recommended restaurant to try out when we were in New York. We made reservations for brunch here and this place was amazing! The service here was impeccable and Josh our server was amazing. The interior of this place is nice with an elegant sort of feel. The way they set up the tables was beautiful and the marigold made it look so sweet. The food here was amazing that I would definitely come back to try more of their dishes. I ordered the Roasted Salmon which had summer squash and tomatoes and a nice nasturtium vinaigrette. The salmon was cooked nicely at a medium rare temperature and the vinaigrette gave the dish a nice fresh light taste. My husband ordered the Crispy Skin Organic Chicken which had lemons, olive oil potatoes, fried onions and potato skins. The chicken was cooked marvelously where it was very moist and not dry like most chicken when cooked are and the potatoes were super delicious that I kept stealing them off my husband's plate. For dessert we ordered the sorbet (passion fruit) and ice cream (vanilla and strawberry). My husband originally wanted the blackberry ice cream, but they ran out. Our server did give us a grape sorbet to try out since they ran out of the blackberry ice cream. I really enjoyed the passion fruit sorbet because of the strong bold flavor; whereas my husband liked the grape sorbet because it was light and had a subtle flavor. Ari M invited 12 of us to a birthday dinner at JoJo's. Jean-Georges transformed an Upper East Side townhouse into a small, casual and contemporary restaurant. While the downstairs entrance, 5-seat bar and narrow dining room feel a bit cramped, the parlor floor has high ceilings, beautiful windows and an airy, warm ambiance. Luckily our 12-seat table was upstairs in a semi-private space. The hostess was super friendly and gracious. Ditto our server! They made sure we were welcomed and comfortable before and throughout our meal. We all started with specialty craft cocktails. While the special Pride Month 'Love Wins Every Thyme' was a popular choice for NYC Pride weekend, I'm glad I picked the 'Watermelon & Cilantro' - Breckenridge Gin, Cilatron, Celery bitters and lime. It was so good I almost ordered a second one, but was already feeling a buzz LOL. Now I have to search for Cilatron. My Sugar Snap Peas, Cucumber, Serrano Chili Salad was an interesting combination of ingredients. Generously drizzled with citrus dressing and Crème Fraîche, even without lettuce it ended up being a beautifully plated, awesome tasting spicy salad. We shared an appetizer of Peekytoe Crab Dumplings, Goldbar Squash Infusion, Black Pepper and Lemon Balm. The dumplings were divine! I could've eaten the entire appetizer by myself. My Charred Duck Breast, Strawberry and Mustard Seed Pickle entree came with Quinoa and lots of Snap Peas. It was cooked to perfection! In all honestly, my favorite dish of the night were special shared side bowls of cooked (blanched and stir fried?) Snap Peas (it's a common theme for my dinner!), Spring Vegetables, all tasting garden fresh and spectacular. I've never had mixture of snap peas, asparagus and other green veggies tasting quite like this before. I could almost turn vegetarian...at least for the day. read more

Interesting living room like decor. Paid my $50 to secure my reservation and was promptly seated on a Tuesday night. Good quality definitely very high, presentation was good. I felt some of apps lacked originality. Not much value. The entrees were better, my halibut was cooked perfectly and seasoned well. Very balanced dishes with the right flavors. My main takeaway from the place is overall the dining experience is more of a quick dine then leave. The noise level is just too much, because the sound bounces off the walls too good. I think they probably had sound insulation to keep the neighborhood quiet but any little talking is echoed off the walls and becomes very deafening to your conversations. I hope the owners address the noisy and sound issue otherwise I can't return due to the sound issues. read more

This impressive upscale restaurant located in the Upper East side of NYC, is from celebrity chef Jean-George with a seasonal French menu. Located in an elegant turn-of-the-century two floor townhouse, they offer both indoor and outdoor seating. We sat at the small bar for a couple minutes while we waited for our table upstairs. We started with the nice Crab Cake appetizer $28. I had the Sea Bass with maitake mushrooms. It was so crispy, fresh and delicious and loved the mushrooms. We then ordered the Carrot Cake $14. Really cute spot on the UES! I got the frittata - it was pretty good and I really liked the goat cheese sprinkled on top. It comes with a side of crispy potatoes and that was really the highlight of my meal! So perfectly cooked and crispy. For dessert we also got the butterscotch pudding and it was a little too sweet and buttery. But pretty good! The staff is also really friendly and polite. read more

The food was fine but the service was terrible. Would be nice if the vegetarian options had a dash of protein (a grain, bean, etc). The bus woman was incredibly rude throughout the meal. One person ordered fish with a sauce and they didn't bring a fish knife or a sauce spoon, which is standard at an expensive place. When asked for the knife we were met with a blank stare and eventually we got a regular spoon. They apparently ran out of Tupperware and didn't explain this so when we asked for boxes to pack up one plate to take away they brought wet and dented tall chef containers with no explanation, which made them look dirty. When we asked for clean ones, we were again met with a blank stare and then an eye roll, when they could have instead explained the situation. (For a restaurant of this caliber someone should have gone to target or a restaurant supply store and bought boxes) read more
