Really unique place. The atmosphere is unlike any other rooftop bar in the area. From the decorations to the staff, the Hof does not lack an ounce of character. The regulars show up as soon as the sun goes down and their dance moves do not disappoint. They have live bands every Wednesday-Sunday. The downstairs portion is turning into more of a restaurant with a completely redesigned menu which you can find on their website. Another perk - they consistently update their website and Facebook with the performers for the week and any extra events they have. read more

The food is good, I enjoyed the scenery of the beer garden but if you are looking for service your screwed, unless you sit at the bar. "Water is self serve only, it's at the end of the bar." What I was told after ordering specifically 2 waters and an order of food after an evening of drinks and I'm driving. I'm not impressed by this response. Another waiter got me a water but is this what the other bar tenders are doing? Ordered the pretzel and a pizza but asked the waitress if the appetizer would come out first: "you ordered them together so they will come out at the same time." What a joke- it's an appetizer? The rooftop itself is amazing. Other parts of this place are not. I've come here a few times on a weekend evening, and the rooftop does not disappoint! Whether you have a large group or it's just two of you, The Hof Garden is fun. I've seen people here who are barely drinking age, other young-ish professionals, and those professionals with their parents. When I came here most recently, the rooftop wasn't open until later in the evening due to a wedding. So, a bunch of people were at the downstairs bar trying to order drinks in anticipation of the 6pm rooftop opening time. Having only two bartenders, who were very slow and did not focus on speed at all, created a 25 minute wait just to be noticed. It was also clear that guys were getting served first, and customers who came after me but were in a better line of sight got their orders in first. It was frustrating. However, once I made it to the rooftop, all of that was forgotten. The drinks and food are well-priced, and if you order upstairs, service is timely. Waiters/Waitresses are constantly walking by, so you can flag any one of them down to add something to your tab. What I don't like, though, is that they keep your card even if you want to order only one thing and close out. It's weird and unnecessary in my opinion. Drink-wise, I've been sticking to the grapefruit radler - it is citrusy, tangy, and bright. It's great for a warm and sunny day. There is also wine and other beers. The food menu includes pretzels, personal-sized pizza, salads, and sharing plates like pork sliders and cheese platters. Four of us came here once, and we got the large pretzel to share for $14 which came with nutella and beer cheese. It hit the spot as a snack/appetizer; it was a little tough to break into pieces though, and I actually found a hair baked into it = unappetizing. Eventually, we got hungry again, so we got two margherita pizzas to share. It was just the right amount after the pretzel. The pizzas were inconsistent - one had cheese and other one was visibly missing it and overflowed with tomato sauce - and I didn't like the sourdough crust. Even still, it was nice to eat something and they were fresh out of the brick oven. Total food cost came out to $9 + tax/tip per person. Given that The Hof Garden has an awesome rooftop space, I will definitely be back. The view isn't the greatest, but it is fun to people watch and actually have the chance at grabbing a table or standing comfortably and listening to the awesome jams that they play. Think Nelly, Daft Punk, and other 2000s hits. Bottom line: despite the lack of a great view (and a speedy downstairs bar), The Hof Garden rooftop excels at providing a chill spot to hang out with friends or family. read more

It seemed that one bartender was okay but the victim of poorly thought out processes and the other bartender seems like she needs to be trained or maybe move on to something she enjoys or is good at. Also 8$ for a draft beer at happy hour is high. I'm no skinflint but a place with zero happy hour drink specials is just super not special. I've had some good times at the hof over the years but the vibe, which was always spotty, has gone to the dark side. read more

Never have I ever, attended an event where I actually considered trying to find the manager and requesting a refund. That is, until this event. I have been going to every New Year's Eve event they've had, since they've opened and always left feeling good about the event. However, this year, right off the bat there were price increases that didn't seem warranted given that there wasn't much new being added. That said there was ample food, which was new, however I'd prefer that be an upgraded fee accessible to people who paid for it. Many people go out to eat for NYE, so we shouldn't be forced to pay for food we're not going to eat. And either way, the food did not justify the dramatically increased prices. That wouldn't have been as much of an issue had there not been additional problems. Firstly, immediately upon arriving, there was a manager (I presume) who felt it was more important to chastise the front door man for a minute, than have him let us in. Given that there was no line, and almost nobody in the place, it felt like that could have waited. Said manager would later pull a bartender away for I assume the same reasons while we were waiting for drinks and proceed to talk to him for at least 3 minutes. Immediately upon entering the building (and only upon arriving without advanced notice) you find out that both the roof is closed and the elevators are down. Now it had drizzled a little earlier that evening but by the time the event started it had stopped, even if they had closed the rooftop bar, for $80 minimum entry, the rooftop itself should have been available to people who wanted to go. There were still floors 1 and 2 available, however with the elevators broken, you ended up picking a floor and staying on it. Which is unfortunate, because part of the fun of NYE at the Hoff was checking out different floors, music, etc. Disappointing, especially considering everything else. Initially, since no one was there it was easy to get drinks, food, and your picture taken at the 360 photo "booth." However, once it got to a pretty decent sized crowd. That changed. At around 10:30 took me over 30 minutes at one point to get a drink. Then when you finally got to the bar, in order to use your drink tickets, you had to haggle with the stingiest bartenders I've ever met on what constituted a drink. Essentially, the drink tickets got you a watered down shooter of whatever was allowed. In addition to that, trying to get multiple drinks for your friends (who were holding the limited tables in the place, while you waited in line for half an hour) was also like pulling teeth. I'm assuming since the upstairs bar was closed, the remaining bars were being overwhelmed. However, this isn't The Hoff's first event (even though it honestly felt like it), they should have had contingencies in place for rain. Even 10 mins would have been too long to wait in line for a drink given the cost of entry. The same could be said for the photo booth. I was glad we got there early, because I definitely saw people in line for at least as long as I was in line for drinks. When you did get your photo, you couldn't tag the Hoff on social media. Literally the only place I've ever been where you got the message "this account doesn't allow tagging" or something along those lines. Which, I don't know why, felt shady and made The Hoff seem grimy. Almost as if they knew things were going to be so bad, they didn't want you mentioning it on social media. Very strange and given the price, I should be able to mention where I am. The next thing we began wonder was, 'how are they going to do the balloon drop' (as advertised), there were no balloons anyway to be seen. We ended up finding out that, "oh yea, no balloon drop this year." Again, extremely disappointing given the cost given that there could have been no weather-related justification for this only poor planning and management. The one music performer was fine (past years there were multiple), however you didn't really feel like dancing, as the single dance floor (again in past years there were multiple) was one of the brightest dance floors I've ever seen. After the countdown, we ended up going next door to Bingo (which was $10 entry (though we got in for free)), no drink lines, balloon drop, no wait for photos, and their patio was open. Given that it had been a NYE staple for me in past years, I could not be more disappointed in The Hoff. I doubt we'll even consider returning next year, unless this is addressed. read more

My friends and I love this spot. However if your expecting to go somewhere for a sit down dinner, this is not your place. We go here when we want to get some drinks and chill, and then while we're at it maybe a bite to eat. I think all the bad reviews are coming from people expecting it to be more like a restaurant. They have three floors that are open depending on the day and weather. When you go in make sure to explore all the floors that are open, a lot of times they have live music going on in at least one. read more

I had a lot of fun here out in the deck. The had a DJ which I guess comes every Sunday and I would definitely recommend going and having a few beverages. I've always experienced lovely service when going for a bite or a drink in the restaurant and rooftop bar, as well as at two events I've held in the 2nd floor Hof Building event space. Seriously great people, tasty fare and yummy drinks! Highly recommend, especially if you are considering using their event space. Advance points of contact via email and their contract software were great as well as on-site communications at the event itself. These guys don't just know what they're doing, they make it easy AND enjoyable to work with them. read more

I'll start by saying the rooftop was beautiful and well decorated. Plenty of space in between tables. There was a jazz band playing that added a nice ambiance. As for the food- terrible and the drinks were over priced. Went for brunch with some friends at 11:30 and was told the grill was out therefore they could not serve brunch or grilled items. The mimosas were 28$ a pitcher, filled the the brim with ice. The flavor of the orange juice was good but the ice watered it down and took up 50% of the space in the pitcher. The smoked salmon dip was tasty but a small portion for the price. I got a Buffalo chicken wrap. It was essentially Buffalo chicken dip in a flour tortilla. My Mac and cheese side was so tiny. Both items were dry. Friend got a chicken salad sandwich that was a joke. A few small pieces of chicken with some Mayo. No flavor, dry, browning lettuce and unripe tomatoes. Another friend got the feta and spinach pizza- again so dry. Overall food was lacking substance and flavor for the price. In conclusion, nice rooftop and decent service, just very overpriced food and drink that didn't taste good. read more

I was deeply disturbed by my experience at this establishment. The fact that I came out to enjoy my day with colleague and friends and was treated with complete disregard was disheartening and unforgivable. To be a patron during COVID 19 that is trying to help business within my community trive is important to me. However, I will never return here after my treatment. Our waitress Makayla was rude and unaccommodating. On top of that the food was mediocre at best. This was a let down. I will not return. Not to mention there was a COVID 19 charge that wasn't explained or posted until the check was received. I am not against paying and fully understand the need for protecting the employees but communication is key especially when the service is subpar. We were rushed from our seat even though we had reservation. I just didn't feel welcome and would strongly suggest some cultural sensitivity training. read more

My boyfriend and I wanted to try a new bar in Richmond and we had a gift card to the Hof. The rooftops space is beautiful but it was extremely overcrowded- especially with young college kids. The beer tap list was boring and downright unacceptable for the booming area of Scott's Addition- not to mention everything is sold in plastic cups! If you are single and ready to mingle, this is the place to be, but if your looking for a quality beer and the ability to hear the people you are with from 6" away, this is not the place for you! read more

I think this was my third visit to the rooftop bar - a nice space with a good view of the fireworks at the Diamond. However the service during this visit was inexplicably terrible! There was one confused young man working behind the bar. He was wandering around making a mixed drink here, pouring a beer there. The number of customers waiting grew and grew while two other employees stood behind the bar doing nothing. By the time my friends and I had our turn, the confused young man was trying to explain - I think - that there was only one beer left on tap because they hadn't changed the kegs? Or maybe they just didn't have any left? It was 8:30 on a Thursday night so I don't understand this breakdown in preparation for the evening's customers. Very disappointing. read more

Been waiting to see if this spot would be properly used and it delivered! Saw people sitting on the roof as I passed the building the other week and I had to look it up and stop by. Great selection of Germans beers and food. No crowd whatsoever and plenary of seating. Awesome rooftop patio that had a live band playing in the corner. Made reservations for the rooftop through their website partner this week on a rainy day, about 4pm. One needs to register with the partner and provide email, phone, etc. They don't make it easy to find their phone number and when I called to confirm the reservation around 5pm it went to voicemail. When we arrived we were told that we did not have a table because it was raining (it had been raining all day) and they could not seat all the tables on the rooftop. They had no alternative tables inside, but the hostess offered us our table uncovered on the roof (in the rain). A restaurant that does not modify their reservation schedule and use contact info for patrons to cancel reservations when they do not have a reserved table available is not a place I will go again. I gave 2 stars because I have been there before for drinks and it is a good-looking spot. Maybe I'll go back with new management. read more

Great bar in Scott's addition area of RVA! Adults of all ages were there just relaxing and taking in the scene. They have a rooftop "garden" that has great views. The middle floor has a private event room & the 'dark room' that is a different bar. The dark room was hosting karaoke the night we went which was so fun. Everyone singing songs circa 2010 & cheering each other on. The bottom floor is more of a restaurant area/ sports bar. All of their drinks are reasonably priced, they have a happy hour & AWESOME food. Definitely a must when you're visiting the area! read more

We lived in Scott's Addition when The Hof Garden first open it's doors. Like many Virginians, we were amazed by their primary focus -- the rooftop bar. We LOVE going to The Hof, however, it doesn't make sense to be a popular rooftop bar that doesn't have happy hour on the roof ... why make people go to the entry level to order happy hour priced drinks? People come to The Hof Garden to be outside, enjoy the view of a developing neighborhood and be with friends. We hope they'll bring happy hour back to the roof! read more

Terrible place! Will NOT be returning. Don't waste your time here... It was my brother and sisters birthday and I made reservations for the lounge seating (cushioned booths) a week before, just so we can get some drinks at sunset. The hostess that was on the rooftop had an attitude with me when I told her that my reservation was lounge seating and not dining, she said well this is all we have available and sat us at a table in the back (hard metal chairs) blocking the rooftop views and sunset...I made a reservation for the lounge seats for their celebration, to close out the night for their birthday. Instead our view was blocked by a wood like structure where they hid the ac in this square wooded fence. They need to understand what a reservation means and not have your seat taken when you get there (I was on time). Also they charge a 10% Service Fee onto your bill (we had a party of 4) so watch out for that! Needless to say I was very dissatisfied but thankfully the people I was with made it better. There are WAY better rooftop bars in Richmond, this one isn't even high. The hostess working the rooftop pissed me off in how she didn't even try to accommodate us when I asked for a better seating. Will not be coming back and I will spread the word about what happened there. read more

I have pretty mixed feelings about this place. A group of us went last night (Tuesday) for drinks and dinner. The place is being renovated so all food and drinks have to be ordered downstairs and then brought up to the rooftop if that's where you want to go. No biggie but waiting for food took quite some time.The beer selection was ok but nothing very extensive and some cost as much as the food (upwards of $10). I got the only gin cocktail on the menu and it was extremely bitter. Way too much vermouth, hardly any gin. My husband overheard the bartending making it ask another bartender, "is it supposed to look like that?" before he served it......Food was typical bar food - thin crust pizza and pretzel was good but was missing the beer cheese that the menu said was one of the items it came with. All in all, nothing too special. The menu didn't feel very authentically German either. The rooftop was very well decorated and cozy. We enjoyed our time up there. But the drinks and food were just very "meh" and the service was slow. Hence the 2 stars but the atmosphere on the rooftop was great. Granted it was a weeknight so it was essentially empty, but still a nice vibe. read more

Upstairs/the roof is more of a "rooftop lounge" than anything that resembles a beer garden, with almost no international beers and a menu more resembling pub food. Views are pretty poor (obviously not the venue's fault). Downstairs has a much more authentic beer selection, but serving it in 12 oz plastic cups is near-offensive. At both bars, the lines move slowly, even with only a small handful of patrons, likely because there's something wrong with their beer lines, causing very foamy beers and forcing the bartenders to labor to pour a decent beer (saw this happen with multiple taps on multiple occasions). With tough parking in the area, I'd pick a different venue. read more
