Came here with my Mom on a Wednesday right when they opened (11:30). By 11:50 the place was basically full. Obviously, the HogsHead is popular and I can see why. The menu has lots of great options and the specials board adds even more tempting choices. We had come here specifically for their hot dog. We decided to split the "Big Boner." This is a 1/2 lb, bacon-wrapped hot dog topped with pulled pork, bbq sauce and ribs. They were out of ribs the morning of our visit so they offered to put "pork wings" on top instead. These were like chicken wing drummettes but bigger. The hot dog was REALLY good. Great taste. Great snap b/c of the natural casing. The bacon wrapping is pretty weak. One single piece of bacon for a 7.5" hot dog barely covers anything. There was LOTS of pulled pork though. They have a delicious BBQ sauce and I added a lot to the dog. The pork wings were awesome. Sooooo meaty. I'd come back here just for those. We shared sides of baked beans, fries, and corn pudding. The baked beans and corn pudding were really good. The fries weren't. Standard crinkle cut, underseasoned. The only let-down of the meal. Service was good, attentive. Go to HogsHead. You don't be disappointed. read more

This place was awesome! They are doing really well with their regulations during this pandemic and I appreciate that. The baked beans were probably some of the best I have EVER had in my life! The bathroom was one of the cleanest I had ever been in, as well, which was unexpected, as the building seemed a little bit older (like most in Richmond). The pulled chicken was very good, the bun it was on was quite soft, and the coleslaw was excellent! I thoroughly enjoyed my time here. The food took quite a bit of time, but that was most likely because they had a LOT of catering/to-go orders that they were making as well. To start, there fresh squeeze lemonade is sprite mix with Minute Maid and they throw in a bunch lemons. Not a fan plus it's $8.99 . Food is okay, we had brisket tacos and pull pork sandwich. Nothing amazing. Add in two kids meals and tip, it was well over $80! Service was fast but I would skip this restaurant for the price of food. read more

This is MY experience and you should definitely check it out for yourself. Hogshead Cafe has good service, attentive waitstaff and okay safety precautions. They give the option to scan the QR code to access their menu although they did provide us with the last disposable menu. They offer inside seating (not really 6 ft apart) but they do their best to keep patrons a good distance apart. If you don't feel comfortable with how they space patrons, curbside pickup is an available option. They also have patio and rooftop patio seating. Now to the food: 1. Peel & eat shrimp were super tasty. I do wish they would have been deveined prior to serving. 2. Loaded tater tots were sooo good! 3. Lobster roll had so much potential. Good flavor and full of meat. However, it was served on a roll the size of a hotdog bun and fell apart as soon as I picked it up. I asked the waiter to bring me a fresh bun because it was too soggy to consume. Still tasty nonetheless but the soggy bread killed it for me. Not worth $22. 3. Mac and cheese was good. Could use some seasoning but that could be a personal preference. 4. The oyster poboy was served on an enormous bed of lettuce. It was great for pictures but not very easy to consume. The collard greens were bland and lackluster. 6. The Hogshead hooch was refreshing and delightful. We ordered a 2nd round for sure! All in all it was a great visit and I hope they continue to thrive during the pandemic. Hands down the BEST BBQ I have EVER had! The specials are on their Facebook page and they change daily. I did read someone else's post about being out of everything. Since everything is made fresh, I recommend coming for lunch or early dinner. We went around 4pm for a friend's birthday celebration. (Group of 7 and a baby.) For appetizers I ordered the asparagus fries, fried green tomatoes, and the crab pizza with beer dip. My sister ordered the fried pickle spears. I will say my least favorite appetizer was the fried pickle spears because they're actually dipped in batter and fried totally different from like a bread or cornmeal coating. It was thick! However the asparagus fries came with some red sauce that is amazing and ranch which is OK. But I'm not a ranch fan. The fried green tomatoes came with a dill sauce and I will tell you taste amazing with whatever that red sauce is that came with the asparagus fries. The crab pretzel, I wish I had taken a picture of it. It came out on like a pizza pan. So when you think pretzel don't think pretzel from like the movies think pretzel like a medium size pizza. AMAZING! I had ordered the brisket dinner. The brisket was so tender and pulled apart so easily and because I am a Carolina barbecue fan, I just doused that all over my brisket and my side of greens. My sister ordered the choice of sides that comes with three different sides. She got the mac & cheese, broccoli casserole, and scalloped potatoes. I will tell you every single side that each one of us got and we tried with seasoned and delicious. And yes we tried the dessert. Those are all homemade as well. I got the banana pudding my sister got the blueberry bread pudding my other sister got the pineapple upside down and my friend got the lemon pie. As I continue the seemingly never-ending spotlight of local restaurants doing takeout, I spotlight the always excellent HOGSHEAD CAFE (did you know that they moved?). For most of the last decade, their food has been some of the best in the country, let alone Richmond, and the takeout experience we had was just as good. When I ask my kids where they want to go for a special meal, invariably "Hogshead" is at the top of their list, and with good reason. Something for everyone, a good variety of sandwiches, entrees, sides and AWESOME drinks. I have to admit I'll miss the close quarters of their older establishment (room for about 30-40 patrons) but with the onset of the new distancing rules that are no doubt coming for restaurants, they will be very happy that they were able to move once we are reopening PROPERLY (more on that later). What's even more awesome is that they are STILL doing their weekly specials, like WILD WING WEDNESDAY and my personal favorite, TACO TUESDAY when their tacos are 3 for $10 (and loaded). The variety is amazing, everything from catfish and oysters to "tiki-style" pork with pineapple and chipotle spices (I can't explain it without getting all watery in the mouth) and my favorite, the nashville chicken (not too hot for those uninitiated). So good, and so worth it for 10 bucks, so why not add some extra sides like their onion rings and greens, all around $4 for a generous portion. Easy ordering either by phone or on the toast app (they will adjust the price for the taco special after you order them on special) but they stand up mightily to the "lag time" test. You can easily get a few orders here in the west end and be a happy eater in Church Hill within a half hour. So, Hogshead deserves a big shoutout for their takeout, but I want to give a shoutout to ALL businesses that are offering their food not only to us, but as discounts and donations to first responders, health care workers, and other essential businesses. We really can't forget that this is something that has redefined our foodie culture in addition to everything else, and while the need to eat is absolute, the fact that these businesses continue to step up and offer their awesome food to us is a testament to how integral they all are to our city. It is for that reason, we should all take heed of what scientists and experts are telling us and WAIT so that these businesses are not given a false green light, only to have it be worse in the coming weeks and months. We do no good to ourselves and these businesses if we sputter into an ill-advised opening that is too soon and too risky. We can still keep businesses afloat, but still mitigate and minimize the chances of infection IF we keep doing what we can to protect these people who are working their asses off to maintain our sanity and keep our takeout experiences positive. Simpy put - Your quote-unquote "RIGHT" to get a haircut, get your nails done, or even eat in a restaurant is not a right, but a PRIVILEGE (many more of us need to be reminded of the difference), and we need to keep the future privilege of eating at these great restaurants in our future. So, STAY HOME, STAY AWAY FROM THE CAPITOL, and GET SOME TAKEOUT! We'll be back at the Hogshead in no time... read more

I wasn't really impressed with this place. The have a pretty decent menu, and maybe I should have ordered something else. My barbecue sandwich was served not very warm, dry, and a bit flavorless. Thank goodness for the sauce, or it would have been hard to eat. The mac and cheese was pretty good, and the coleslaw could use some work. My waitress was pretty good. We visited around 4p, so there wasn't a large crowd. I've heard so many good things about HogsHead Cafe, so I was a little disappointed about my experience. Overall I was displeased with my food and I really wanted to like this place!! With their traditional, southern cuisine they had a lot of good options. Today was beautiful so it was nice to sit outside. There's an upstairs patio and a downstairs patio which is cool and a nice atmosphere. Chicken Philly cheesesteak had an awesome flavor even though my boyfriend wanted it plain! Pulled pork BBQ was kind of dry but had a nice Smokey flavor. Skimp on the coleslaw for the menu saying "stacked high with Cole slaw on the side" and was a bit too sweet for my liking. Was not expecting the sweet potato fries to have brown sugar on them. Was looking for some what of a healthier alternative for fries so didnt care for the brown sugar. I'm sure others enjoy it tho! I'm not a big reviewer but felt like I should leave one for this establishment. Came in on a Saturday at around 8 pm for dinner. First impression - great decor, looks like a really neat place. Was seated promptly and had a very polite waitress, but things went downhill from there. Ordered a pulled chicken sandwich and the only real side available was French fries. Although the place was almost empty they were out of everything else (potato salad, baked beans, etc). Sandwich came out and to call it pulled would be generous- it was actually a few large chunks of chicken dropped onto an overwhelmed cheap store bought hamburger bun. Half of the chunks were still refrigerator cold. The fries were frozen crinkle cuts (think Ore Ida) deep fried. Wish I had gone to Mission BBQ down the street. read more

My husband picked this as it was close to our hotel and I love BBQ. This place was amazing! Heather C was absolutely fantastic. We tried so much food and it was all amazing! We had the fried pickles, cheesesteak, signature hot dog, pulled pork sandwich (go with the hog sauce!!!!) catfish dinner and the Cuban. Plus sides! We were stuffed. It was absolutely amazing! And we couldn't go without dessert! The lemon ice box pie was out of this world, and the banana pie and peach cobbler were great as well! I highly recommend checking this place out. read more

A little disappointed our most recent visit. We went Memorial Day weekend around 1 pm. we specifically went because we had seen their fried clams...but of course we get there and they had "just sold out" UGH such a bummer. So we tried to order a few other appetizers from their Daily Specials Board and every time the server would come back and say "oh we're out of that" This happened about 3x's I could tell the server felt bad because he even said "please don't leave" I know it's not his fault but someone have the common sense to erase the shit hour out of on the damn board. It's really not that difficult! We opted to share some smoked wings tossed in Alabama White Sauce. They were pretty good. Nice & hot but the sauce was just ok. The fairies catfish bites were good and the tarter sauce yummy...just wish it wasn't 100% cornmeal crust. They were really grainy. Blue cheese wedge was amazing as usual that is by far one of our favorites. They have a fantastic new patio which was awesome. We will definitely be back next time in town but I'll probably call ahead to verify the specials are correct and in stock first. read more

I have given hogs head wonderful reviews in the past. The past few times I have noticed a decline in the quality. My Reuben was basically burnt with little meat on it. The cheese wasn't melted. I was so disappointed because I know the how good their food can be. The chicken cordon blue sandwich was dry and tasted like liquid smoke. The bartender had a bad attitude and was more concerned about yelling at employees and eating than making sure we were ok. I was never asked about my food even though I took one bite. She did offer me a box, and when I said no and just walked off. I loved their place, and I am sad I won't return after this. read more

We ended up trying HogsHead by chance; Our original planned spot wouldn't be open for another half an hour and being starving, we shook the dice and came here. The menu is very focused on BBQ offerings and sides, like the hush puppies, which we loved. I got chicken tenders and my friend got a BBQ sandwich. The portions are BIG. The reason I cut back the stars? The chicken tenders were $17.99, and they weren't exactly special in anyway. The food is average to above average, but the prices on many things is too much for just receiving a large portion. I'd gladly would have taken a smaller amount of food if that's what it takes to lower the price. Neither my friend nor myself were able to finish our meals, which also makes me wish the portions had sizes or were just plain smaller. The staff was nice and our food came out fast, and the restaurant is very clean. My only gripe is not being able to get a smaller portion for a more reasonable price. Also, they played a lot of 80's music, and I'm not a fan (Had to sit through the 80's to begin with) so, another star off, but if you love 80's hits, you'll enjoy Hogs Head! read more

The service here is less then stellar - most of them were standing and conversating at the end of the bar. Our waitress acted like she was in a hurry and not warm and welcoming. The meat - we tried ribs, pulled pork and a burger. I will have to say whoever is cooking the burgers - they need to realize the difference between medium rare and well done. I think the burgers may be precooked and heated up as the food took no time at all to come out of the ktichen. I would have given them a two but the sides were good - we had potato salad, greens and sweet potato fries. We never needed anything because she was on top of everything we could want and even things we didn't think to ask for but came in handy. The food was another story. We split the hodshead platter. The ribs were so dry and had such a strange sweetness to the bark we did not like it at all. We tried both the pork and chicken bbq and both were very dry and came out cold. We don't enjoy cold bbq at all. We also got Cole slaw and Jersey fries. Cole slaw was missing something, just very bland and didn't have any kind of flavor; not sweet, not vinegary, just bland. Jersey fries were fine but were basically just a thicker French fry. We came here on the recommendation of friends but will not return. Went here after a long hiatus, still kicking myself for not visiting more. I had the fried oyster dinner with broccoli bake and scalloped potatoes. For the appetizer I had the fried mushrooms. Everything was cooked brilliantly, the oysters were the standout being seasoned right and not overly salty. It was so filling. After the mushroom appetizer I was so hungry I didn't take pictures of any food, I couldn't stop to put anything down. Haha. My friend had the fried pickles and the shrimp dinner with Mac and cheese and collard greens. He shared the same sentiment. DELICOUS! Nearly every component of our meal was a hit! The food cake out quick, and not too hot or cold. Appetizer: I'm not a huge fan of hush puppies but my fiancé said they were really good. Dinner: I got the fried shrimp po boy with sweet potato fries. It was good, but I probably wouldn't get it again. The shrimp were cooked well and the remolaude was tasty, but the bun was too big and there was too much lettuce compared to the number of shrimp so many bites were just bread and lettuce. **the sweet potato fries were the highlight of the meal!!** maybe the best I've ever had. Crispy on the outside soft on the inside, sweet and salty, and I could drink the maple dipping sauce they come with! Absolutely delicious. My fiancé got the Hog Burger with Mac and cheese. The sandwich was great. The pork was tender and flavorful. The Mac and cheese was not great. We would pass on this next time and try a different side- or both get the delicious sweet fries and dip! My mom got the Cajun shrimp tacos and the flavor on the shrimp was absolutely delicious! I'll probably get this next time we go. My dad got the blackened chicken sandwich and he really enjoyed it. Good portion size and fresh with good seasoning. For dessert we all shared the lava cake and peanut butter pie. The lava cake wasn't anything special, it was very tiny. However I was impressed with the peanut butter pie. It was creamy and flavorful without being too rich or sweet. I loved the crushed peanuts that were on it. And the whipped cream on the side was delicious as well. I will definitely get this again. I wish I caught her name, but our server was great- quick, attentive without being annoying, and super friendly. Outdoor seating was nice. For our drinks we ordered the strawberry limeade and regular limeade. They're amazing and I believe the server told us they were made fresh in house! I'm so glad I got the large because I would've been disappointed and wanting more if I order the small. For our meals we order shrimp poboys which was very good. The food came very hot, which I love. Everytime I come I have to order a half dozen smoked wings! These are some of my favorite wings in the Richmond area. Before leaving, I placed an order of them to go. Stopped by for dinner as we have never been to this restaurant. The fried oysters tacos ordered by my wife were delicious. I got the Cat Fish sandwich and it was one of the best I've ever eaten. My son got the sides all had taste and were good size. We also tried 3 of their soups (she crab, lobster bisque and crab corn chowder) and will buy again in the future. Recent relocation to RVA, wanted at March Madness staple...so I ordered the BBQ nachos... OMG !! These are the best I've ever had and I've lived in Memphis for 5 years. Totally blows anything in Memphis away. The BBQ was juicy, combination of all the veggies and jalapeños, cheese was perfect.
