We chose Ise-Shima at the Miyako Hotel for an early birthday celebration with my parents, wife, children, sister and nephews. It should have been an easy win. The room is beautiful. The chefs are visible. The staff is plentiful. The music is good. The atmosphere feels like the kind of place that understands hospitality. Unfortunately, the experience never quite came together. The first challenge was the temperature. The dining room felt more like a sauna than a restaurant. To his credit, our server Arthur worked hard to help and eventually got management to increase the air conditioning. He was easily the standout of the evening and did everything he could to salvage the experience. We ordered extensively, including the $130 Ise Course. Some of it was quite good. Some of it was surprisingly disappointing. The grilled lobster with yuzu miso and kinome was completely overcooked, dry and buried under too much sauce. One of the signature dishes of the course ended up being one of the weakest. The grilled yellowtail suffered from the same problem: dry, overcooked and lacking the care you would expect from a restaurant presenting a seasonal multi course menu at this price point. The larger issue was organization. Dishes constantly arrived with servers asking, "Who ordered this?" or "Who has the udon?" The dining room felt strangely disconnected from the kitchen. Food runners seemed unsure where dishes belonged, which created confusion throughout the meal. Then things really went sideways. Trying to be respectful, I asked that my parents be served first. Everyone eventually received their meals and continued eating. The problem was that my Ise Course never arrived in sequence. My family finished their meals. My children finished. My parents finished. My sister finished. And on my birthday, I sat there alone waiting for several missing courses while everyone else watched. A seasonal set menu is supposed to feel paced and intentional. Instead, it felt forgotten. Arthur again stepped in and spoke with management. The restaurant offered complimentary desserts, which was appreciated, although somewhat awkward because my meal was still arriving while everyone else was already moving on to dessert. What happened next genuinely surprised me. When the bill arrived, management returned and asked whether we would be willing to authorize an additional charge so gratuity could be increased from 18% to 20% because of the size of the party. After the heat, the delays, the confusion, the overcooked centerpiece dishes, the missed pacing and spending a birthday meal eating alone after everyone else had finished, it felt like the wrong conversation to be having. I don't enjoy writing reviews like this because there is clearly talent in the building and Arthur deserves recognition for how hard he worked. But hospitality is ultimately about making people feel cared for. On this visit, despite a beautiful room and some good food, that never happened. read more

I ordered the seasonal special set and was very impressed with the food, the presentation, the pricing point $42! The set came on a fancy tray and a beautiful two-tier Japanese bento box. It included hot soup, fresh salad, crispy shrimp tempura, melt-in-your-mouth tuna sashimi, and perfectly seasoned salmon fillet. Fabulous place to enjoy a Japanese set menu. It had been a few years since my last visit, and this time the experience seemed more enjoyable overall; however, there were a few notable flaws. First, the dining room temperature was far too warm, making it difficult to enjoy the meal comfortably. Moreover, there appeared to be some disagreement among the staff regarding the gratuity charges. It was unclear why the mandatory service charge had increased from 18% to 20%, especially considering that the service provided was, at best, mediocre. Needless to say, this left a lasting negative impression, despite the fact that I was not the one paying the bill. Wow. This place is incredible. It's located inside the Miyako Hybrid Hotel. The service was incredible and they checked in with our table several times and shared their thoughts on certain menu items. We got the chu-toro, otoro, chicken teriyaki for the kids, ume shiso, uni, cucumber roll, and a couple of other dishes. Got the Mont Blanc dessert which was subtly sweet and so unique in flavor (chestnut). Everything was fresh and flavor was on point. We came here for a birthday dinner and they put us in a closed off section of the restaurant. It's really nice inside, feels upscale. It would be great for a business meal or a date. It's located within a hotel so it's not obvious from the outside, parking is easy out front. We ordered the yellowtail carpaccio, and a couple of their signature rolls - the flaming tuna and the salmon tide roll. The presentation of everything was really nice, lots of (edible!) flowers decorating each plate. The yellowtail carpaccio was stunning, I've never seen one look like this one. I thought it was good, nice and citrusy, and the quality of the fish tasted good. We were less enthused about the rolls, sadly. Each roll came with five pieces which we thought was pretty odd and made it harder to share. Both rolls had inconsistently sized pieces and most were too wide, making it somewhat awkward to stuff each one in your mouth. They should definitely make the pieces smaller and give you more. If you're on a date, I wouldn't advise getting a roll here haha. The flaming tuna was by far significantly better than the salmon tide, it tasted fresher and just overall better. The salmon tide was a little too creamy for my liking. My family who ordered off the sushi/sashimi menu seemed to love what they got, though! The service was professional and kind but incredibly slow. We had to continue asking our waiter for things and after a few times of asking without receiving what we needed, we had to ask other wait staff. He had a very professional and calm demeanor, but he wasn't very on top of things. Overall decent sushi spot, a little overpriced for what it is though. And I would stick with ordering off their sushi/sashimi menu instead of ordering rolls. read more

We ate here yesterday. After having several bad experiences at some local sushi restaurants, my BFF mentioned Ise-Shima to me, located inside the MIYAKO HYBRID HOTEL, on Western Ave, in GARDENA. We ate some of the best Sushi I've ever had, it was heavenly. Spider roll, Spicy Tuna roll, Chu Toro Nigiri, 3 kinds of Chefs App, and the Rainbow Rolls were so delicious, the contrast of this location compared to other sushi restaurants were night and day.The pictures says it all. We made reservations for 6 without too much trouble and ordered the Ise Course meal ahead of time. For dinner it ran about $100/person. The course meal is like 7 courses? I lost count but it was certainly presented well and pretty good. Tea was complimentary and we probably drank a little too much but oh well! The first course was a mushroom dish that was light and tart, prepping my stomach for a full meal. The second course was a cute tray of assorted appetizers: squid, seaweed, escargot, and some savory-ish soup. Third, we got some nicely flavored and seasoned bamboo shoots. Fourth, a delicious plate of fresh sashimi that melts in your mouth. Fifth, tempura including scallop tempura which was new for me. Goes pretty well with their matcha salt. The sixth course is the main entree, black miso cod or steak with rice and miso soup. My fiancé and I shared the cod and steak. Nothing beats a tender and buttery black miso cod and the steak was cooked well and juicy. Dessert was a matcha panna cotta/pudding type dish that was not too sweet. So all in all, this is a nice place for a fancy-ish dinner but certainly not a regular occurrence given how pricey it is. But hey, now I can say I've tried it! read more

You get 3 of most items , 2 of the higher end items. Scallop was one of them, very fresh and had a sweet profile. Deluxe chirashi 4/5 - fresh fish, good selection. But wow, very minimal uni for the price of the dish. It was like a little teaser. Chicken cutlets 5/5 - loved how juicy the chicken was on the inside and how crispy the tempura shell was on the outside. Clear broth soup 4/5 - loved the clean soup taste, but $9 for a small bowl with two floating pieces of mushroom and a small piece of sea bass is pretty steep. We came for the breakfast buffet the next day by 8am. Most items were running out and it didn't seem like they were refilling. Minimal traditional Japanese items, wish they had a little more. Everything was plated beautifully and was delicious! Seasonal Lunch Special ($43) - Get this if you want variety! The set comes with salad, bluefin tuna and hamachi sashimi, braised vegetables, shrimp/scallop/vegetable tempura, grilled miso king mackeral, mountain vegetable rice, egg custard, soup w/ sea bass, & dessert. I actually preferred this over the tuna special. The mackerel was cooked and seasoned well, with the miso flavor deeply penetrating the fish. Love the fresh sashimi and warm egg custard. I'd skip the cocktails (at least during lunch). We got the expresso martini & yuzu south, which didn't wow me. Pretty standard cocktails while not being memorable or something I'd get again. Stick with sake options to be safe. Unfortunately, they no longer offer the chirashi lunch sets. Although, the rest of the menu is still worth exploring. Got the Premium assorted Nigiri sushi and LOVED it all! It came with a side salad, miso soup and all the pieces were delicious, including the mackerel and uni (I usually don't like those but the mackerel wasn't fishy, and the uni was very creamy and buttery!). We also got fried squid and it was just okay to me. I would recommend skipping it. For desserts, they had 4 options but the 3 of us couldn't decide so we got all 4 lol I'd say the best were the yuzu cheesecake and black sesame cake! We were sooo full but our belly was very happy after this dinner. Service was impeccable, great atmosphere, and we were able to make a reservation for Friday dinner, the day of. This is probably the best spot in town for a great, authentic Japanese lunch. I've been here about 3-4 times with my company when we're in the mood for a special lunch. The bento lunch option is top notch. Its usually served with rice, light flavorful soup, fresh sashimi, steamed vegetables, tempura, cooked filet of fish and a dessert. The pictures were extremely promising so I knew I had to give it a try. I booked a reservation ahead of time and came on a Saturday. Being at Miyako Hotel, the staff were amazing. The restaurant is quite spacious with copious seating. We were sat at a very nice table. After some careful deliberating, my wife and I both ended up getting the seasonal special. For autumn, the lunch menu started with chawanmushi and a salad. The salad came with a yuzu dressing which was nice. The chawanmushi had shrimp and mushrooms and was quite tasty. The lunch set itself was amazing. Tuna and yellowtail sashimi with freshly grated wasabi, braised vegetables, yellowtail teriyaki, various tempura, chestnut rice, and an amazing soup, delivered a wide variety of subtle and elegant flavors for my palate. Everything was amazing, but I loved the vegetables, sashimi,and soup. There was also a chestnut ice cream dessert which was an excellent ending to the meal. The server quickly sat us know at a 4-person table, which I like to have more space. The price is in the higher side. We ordered 1 seasonal dinner set, beef tongue, fried chicken, a side order giant clam, and a curry Chicken rice. Everything came out fast. The yuzu beef tongue was delicious, juicy and soft. Fried chicken was flavorful. The curry rice was as surprisingly good, considering this is more of a sushi place. The seasonal dinner set came with lots of variety of food, sashimi set, sushi, salad, miso soup, beef, tempura, and even a dessert. We throughly enjoyed everything we had. The menu is located on their website, but here's some of the Japanese menu items they had when I visited: Grilled Fish (Salmon and Mackerel), Tamago, Hijiki, Pickled Veggies, Natto, and Miso Soup. American options included made to order eggs and/or omelette, sausage and bacon. They also had a few pastry items. Overall, it's a good experience if you're interested in the Japanese food items. However, personally, nothing was extraordinary to me since I have most of the items I ate here on a semi-regular basis anyways. read more

They serve a lot of great set meals, but this time we tried their special scallop dishes that they're featuring for the rest of the month! We tried their sweet and sour scallops, tempura scallops with matcha salt, yuzu miso scallops and so much more! All their dishes had such perfectly cooked pieces of Japanese scallop that were huge and delicious! Our server Miyako was so sweet and friendly, and I love how the head chef comes to check in on all the tables!
