I brought this to Hokaido's attention via email to no avail.. I live in this neighborhood since 2004 and frequent Hokaido restaurant - even more so during covid closing for local support. My recent experience is beyond belief.  A server, that I've never seen before, threw a tantrum when I called out full charge on 2 glasses of wine when it was supposed to be happy hour price.   Instead of $7.25, I was charged $8.95.  I tried to flag her down but she was too busy fratanizing with customers, therefore, I was getting annoyed and impatient.   At this point. I was in a rush to leave and would not wait. I left a $5 tip and told her to adjust it and give herself the difference back (bill was $36). With that she blew out "it's the company's money not mine" then made obvioius "ugh" noise like a 3 year old for the other patrons to hear. Complete unprofessional and immature. I'm glad to take my business elsewhere. There's alot of sushi restaurants out there. read more

I don't normally write good reviews- I just come on yelp to vent about poor quality or bad service. But I had to say something about Hokaido. This was my first time trying them only because they were open later than the surrounding places. I placed an order online to go. When I got there it was just about finished. Really nice and welcoming staff. The food was on point. Every roll was delicious and the teriyaki and soup were warm when I got it home. Not warmish but just perfect. I look forward to going again. Inside is a lobster mix, shrimp tempura wrapped with soy paper And on the outside is tuna, avocado, and topped with deep fried onion Straws! It's a meal in itself! By far our favorite roll! I was deeply surprised and disappointed with the service received today for lunch. It was unpleasantly surprised because I had never had service like this at any Japanese restaurant, especially I just came back from Japan. The waitress, whom I have never seen before, didn't seem to want to sit me down at first and had me sit at a table for two, but sit a couple who later came at a bigger table. I couldn't get her attention since she walked away and didn't show up again, so I moved to a bigger table against the wall that was more comfortable. The restaurant wasn't busy. The whole time I was waiting for the other party to show up about 10 minutes, she didn't ask me for any drink at all, not even water. I couldn't even waive her down to get it. She, however, did give drink to the same couple who then came later. I was about to leave and text the other party go meet elsewhere but then he showed up, so we stayed there. Then when she served the two bento boxes, she put mine in front of me while holding the other way close to my face. I leaned toward the other side away from it to create more room between my face and the bento box she was holding, but she the leaned even closed toward it. I don't understand why she couldn't just put both of our bento boxes down; yet had to hold the other one so close to me while I had to lean so far to the other side. It is poor training, let alone it is common sense you do not make customer move; even worse keep on invading the space even more when I already leaned towards the other side away from it. I am not even sure if was pure stupidity or intentional. It just felt like she had a beef with me somehow. Strange and the vibes are very bad unlike before. read more

My boyfriend and I went to Hokaido Sushi to celebrate our second Valentine's Day together and we left Hokaido Sushi satisfied and with happy stomachs. Originally, we were going to go to Mr. Shota but decided that we wanted to go somewhere closer and try out another new sushi place. It is safe to say that we will certainly be coming back again in the near future! Upon entering the restaurant itself, I adored the small spacing that created a welcoming, cozy atmosphere. If I didn't know any better, I would've assumed Hokaido Sushi was an amazing hole in the wall type of place that we were lucky to find. I adored the decorations and the service alone was flawless as everyone was making sure we're enjoying our time and our food. The food alone left me with a smile on my face, especially with the freshness of the sashimi salad. The spicy salmon roll was phenomenal, my boyfriend especially enjoyed every single piece he ate. The crispy rice with spicy tuna was an interesting concept undoubtedly! The flavor alone was nice but the different textures were an experience to eat. For the two of us, the portioning of the sashimi salad, sushi combo, and crispy rice with spicy tuna was an amazing portion to fill both of us! this was our second time at hokaido and we just love this place. we will take this over the trendy vegas spots any day! they have an amazing happy hour with great discounts and a good selection. the quality of the fish is super fresh with good portion sizes for every roll. their double salmon and alaska rolls are some of our favorites! they are so fresh and flavorful with high quality fish. the staff is so personable and truly takes the time to welcome you in to their culture with such pride and joy. there isn't a ton of seating options but it's a great intimate space that's very quiet. when we left each of their staff smiled and waved us goodbye, such a friendly touch in such a busy city! read more

My wife and I went for lunch. Plenty of seating choice . We were served promptly and our hostess / server helpful and attentive. I wanted to try their sashimi as I'd been told to avoid sushi rice . My wife had a bento box with chicken katsu and tempura . The bento box had so much she took the tempura and rice home. I opted for Saba (mackerel) and Unagi (eel) sashimi , both were delicious and presented nicely on a bed of peeled radish. I also had 3 small shigoku oysters that looked as good as they tasted . Along with cucumber salad it was a very nice lunch and we will be back. If could change anything, lower the overhead music volume and a little brighter lighting. read more

Had it at the sushi bar so it comes from the chef straight to your table, no waits and pretty much everything you expect. A nice size restaurant with plenty of seating. We arrived around 1pm on a Sunday and we were then only ones there. We sat at the sushi bar and we were greeted right away and were told we can order when ready. We got a small crab app/salad with our serving plate. Everything we ordered was delicious. Bikini Roll 8/10: great flavors and fresh salmon and vegetables insides. Love my ass roll 7/10: enjoyed it but the topping was very bland. Japanese lasagna Roll 10/10: love a baked roll. So much sauce and flavor that definitely doesn't even taste like sushi sometimes. Red Mountain Roll 6/10: a little too much crispy topping for my liking but has decent flavor. Think can be a little more mild to spicy taste or even a sauce portion. Grand Canyon Roll 10/10: great sauce, size, and toppings. Will fill you up with flavor and taste. As a Japanese food fanatic, I am always down to try new Japanese spots in town. Unfortunately, Hokaido Sushi is just not a hit for me. Located on Fort Apache, Hokaido Sushi is one of the many sushi restaurants in the southwest part of town. To start off on a good note, this spot has a nice Japanese themed interior that takes me back to a small side of the road sushi restaurant when I visited Japan years back. You are able to tell that the owner of this place really put a lot of thoughts into designing this place. The tables are also nicely spaced out so you don't feel overly crowded. Now onto the service and food. Service is subpar. I am always baffled when the server throws the menu onto the table when we sit down. The food preparation time is also ridiculously long (35ish minutes) when there was only three tables total when we were sat. Food is very mediocre. The chicken teriyaki is severely over cooked and drenched in teriyaki sauce that is way too sweet. The chicken tasted like rubber that will give you cavities. However, for the bento you can also select sashimi as your second item, which I thought was a great deal. Unfortunately, though the yellowtail sashimi tasted fresh and melts in your mouth, it was essentially flavorless. The sushi combo was also a bit of a disappointment to me. The sushi's really lacks the fish taste and aroma, the eel was over cooked, and I thought they could replace the second salmon with another nigiri for variety. Given the nice reviews from my fellow yelpers, I'm assuming I visited them on a bad day. Personally, based on my experience, I would really recommend staying away from this spot due to the mediocre food and subpar service. read more

Dined here on a week night, not wanting to cook, for we were tired from our road trip. We have been dining here for many years, before we became home owners, close to the restaurant. We sat at the sushi bar & ordered the special nigiris: Blue fin tuna; Modai; toro, and Chutoro - all of the fish were fresh, tasty, with a hint of truffle oil atop. We also ordered some of the deep-fried favs - mixed tempura & baby octopus, both apps were fresh & delicious! I guess we were pretty hungry, so couldn't leave without a few rolls. i.e., Marilyn Monroe, and spicy yellowtail hand roll. Everything tasted amazing, and all the staffs were friendly. Came here on a Sunday night with a party of 11. It def took a while for our food to come out. I ordered a bento with tempura teriyaki chicken but the chicken was on the dry side. Their serving for their chicken katsu was enough for 3 adults. The dark horse roll was pretty good. I really wanted to try their dynamite but we had way too much food already. My hubs had their katsu curry which he enjoyed. One of my kids ordered their saimin with chicken but the broth tasted more like vegetable broth than anything. I've been here before and ordered to go , I thought dining in would be better. Darn, there was no option of AYCE, which was disappointing. Good start, as it was not that busy. Unfortunately , once we got our food - beef soup, bento box( I did ask if they can sub a special roll for an additional price, but they declined) and the hot scream roll, you have to ask for a bowl or a refresh for water. The flavor of the rolls were just so, so , especially the hot scream baked roll with white fish. I felt it didn't taste baked , I couldn't finish. The bento box was delicious as well as the tempura. We asked for plastic bags to split our to-go order , just got the clear supermarket produce bag. The staff was trying to clear our dishes but we were not finished putting the food in the containers . I can't believe I have not made my review yet on this place since I've been going here for years!!! This is my secret happy place, I always walk in and always greeted with happy smile servers. Place is inside the plaza which offers plenty parking spaces. I come and sit at the bar, watching Sushi chef makes them so delicious rolls. They offer a pretty decent menu for happy hour and 2 set of happy hour time slots too. The place has the old vibe, local fave feeling and the service is excellent. The portions of sushi roll are satisfying and the flavor is really good. I love sushi and I eat sushi in different places, whether in a high priced strip sushi spot or local, I find myself keep coming back to this place. My initial reaction was a solid 2 stars. The uniqueness of the menu brought it up a notch. I've driven by this place a million times and I wanted to try someplace new, so for my initial visit I decided to order via their website for take out. 'Seemed harmless at the time, but the earliest pick up time for 2 sushi rolls was a 48 minute wait. At 3:30 in the afternoon, that seemed a bit excessive, but I equated that to mean it's popular and worth the wait, right? Well, maybe. After putzing around waiting for my 48 minute lunch, I arrived surprised to find that the place was almost completely empty. After being greeted by the hostess, she looked completely dumbfounded when I told her that I was there to pick up my online order. As she ran back to the chef it became apparent to me that they hadn't checked their online orders and instead of owning their error, she pretended that it's still being prepared and will be only a few more minutes. 15 more minutes and I'm finally on my way home. My two sushi rolls were good, but not 1 hour good. I won't be back. Tip: if you decide to go, skip the online ordering and go during happy hour. The tempura asparagus roll is delicious! read more

Today is the second time my husband and I had our late lunch here. Everything we ordered were so fresh and delicious. Salmon skin Salad was crunchy and the salad were fresh the dressing was the best. Agedashi tofu, Hamachi Usuzukuri was incredible, the platters of sushi and sashimi combo were beautiful and fresh, must always have some fried octopus tentacles because they were delicious!
