My friend highly recommended that we had to try the Strawberry Cupcake before we left Hawaii. This little bakery shop is located inside of a plaza. We only had time to go an hour before it closed and there weren't many options left, but luckily we were able to get our hands on the 3 Strawberry Guava & 3 Port Wine cupcakes. Both cupcakes were very flavorful and delicious. I would definitely come back to try out the other flavors. I didn't plan ahead too much on where I wanted to go and see during my Hawaiian vacation, but I DID need to check out the Hokulani Bake Shop for my cupcake fix! After a day of snorkeling and jumping off rock at the North Shore, Ben F. and I rushed down to Hokulani before it closed - according to their site they close at 7pm. After traffic and getting lost, we made it around 6:30pm and saw that they closed at 6!!! ARGH! We tried again the next day and I finally got to try a red velvet. I would ALMOST say it was worth the headache - it was an overall tasty cupcake [$2.something each]. The frosting was super creamy and cream cheese-y and the cake itself could've used a tbs. or 2 of cocoa. The owner was there and was very inquisitive as to how we found out about the bakery and hopes to see pics online. I did like seeing their variety of exotic flavors too. There ya have it! An absolute favorite of mine. I started coming here when they first opened and am so happy that they have become so popular. My friend and I became familiar with the owners and just love them. They are friendly and are one of the many reasons we keep coming back here for our favorite desserts. Their cupcakes are rich in flavor and they have MANY flavors. They have the classics: red velvet, chocolate, vanilla, and they have their own takes on lilikoi, strawberry guava, and other amazing cupcake concoctions that I'm up for trying. I always get cupcakes from here for parties, dinners, and will keep coming back. Prices are decent for the flavor you get. They cost a little more for the special flavors. The cupcakes are average size, but for me, that's just fine because they taste so wonderful. Been buying their cupcakes for years but was recently disappointed. I used to say Hokulani had the best red velvet cupcakes on the island. Yesterday, the red velvet & chocolate cupcakes were pretty dry n bland. It tasted like it was a day old. I'll be willing to try them again one more time. I haven't been to the actual bakery yet, but I had a chance to sample their magnificent cupcakes last week because they were being sold at my work for a fundraiser. I tasted all 3 of the available flavors - strawberry guava, red velvet & lilikoi. I was impressed with the red velvet because I was able to taste the chocolately flavor that is supposed to be the base of red velvet cupcakes, which I'm not often able to taste at other places that sell red velvet cupcakes. I also enjoyed the strawberry guava and lilikoi cupcakes for their brightness of flavor taste. I've read the comments giving them low scores for dryness. I have to say that this was not case at all in the cupcakes that I had. They were very moist and if I haven't already indicated, super delicious. I got an email from work today saying they are coming back for another fundraiser. We can special order the other flavors to be brought that day, so I just might do that. When I think of Hokulani Bake Shop I think of two things. 1. This is my favorite place for Red Velvet Cupcakes EVERRRRRR!!! I remember getting off of work from Oceans 808 at 5am and smelling the yummy goodness being baked early in the morning! It was like heaven passing by, and would always make a long rough night dealing with drunk people slip my mind. 2. the owner almost ran a co-worker and I after work. LOL. He didnt think anyone would be in the parking garage that early in the morning, and it doesn't help that we are short. He was so nice though, apologizing, and gave us a box of cupcakes to share. I saw an ad for this quaint little bake shop in the in-flight magazine on the way to Oahu and decided to Yelp it. Sure enough it sounded delicious. Finding it, however, was no fun task. It's located in Restaurant Row, which quite frankly looks more like an industrial complex than a row of restaurants. Whatever. Anyway, their cakes are in fact delicious. I tried like 4 different ones and each one was better than the next. The Red Velvet Cake, however, is absolutely the best I've had aside from my aunt's recipe. It almost melted in my mouth it was so good. I ended up having 2! They have excellent cookies and cookie tins as well. Perfect for tourists to get to take home (which is what we did) or eat on the plane ride home (which is what we did also). Tucked away in a small strip malls is by far one of the greatest cupcake shops I've ever been too. Not only was it the winner of cupcake wars but it also is highly regarded among other bakeries. Right when I walked in a wonderful dough aroma filled my nose and after my first bite of the red velvet cupcake (a store best seller) I was completely sold. They also cover a variety of unique cupcakes such as guava strawberry, mango, and lilikoi. Most of the cupcakes have cream cheese frosting and it is one of the creamiest and rich, yet not overpowering, cream cheese frostings I've ever had. The cupcakes are of average price being about 2.50 for simple cupcakes and 3.50 for fancier cupcakes such as salted Carmel of filled. Now that my fiance works at Restaurant Row I can conveniently pop into the shop and taste all sorts of flavors. My favorites this season is definitely the Neopolitan and the Strawberry Shortcake. We came in for to curb our sweet tooth. I've heard a lot about Hokulani's and im a red velvet fan.... So there was about 13 different cupcakes to choose from, and they had 2 types of red velvet. Of course we choose the cream filled center-red velvet cake. (they also had the strawberry cheesecake they featured on Cup Cake Wars) Well, eehhh, twas so-so. I needed to order 300 mini cupcakes for a trade-show booth at a corporate event and I was on a budget. I'm from Chicago so couldn't taste test. Instead, I called multiple bakeries and the best prices were definitely at Hokulani. Based on the solid reviews, I decided it was a safe bet, and I'm glad Yelp didn't steer me wrong! Taste: These cupcakes were awesome! The vanilla were the best, but the red velvet cream cheese were also a huge hit! We passed them out at our convention booth all day, but fell victim to eating at least 3-4 a day ourselves....life in Sales is tough....yes. Appearance: The cupcakes were very cute overall but frosting was pretty messy/sloppy looking on several of them. Likely no one cared or even noticed but me, but if I was spending my own money on these for my own party I might not have been so pleased. Customer Service: Very good. My order was taken promptly and it was exactly right. When i picked up the cupcakes, the girl at the store actually helped me carry them (300!) out to my car which was a full block a way - so nice of her! Hokulani cupcakes makes great cupcakes! I've been to Hokulani a couple years ago and recently just went back. It feels like there are so many more flavors to choose from now. I had such a hard time choosing just six on this day. It helped when I decided I'll obviously be back sometime real soon to try the other options. Last minute birthday rescue!!! The night before my brother-in-law's birthday, my husband thinks it would be cool to send him something. We looked up the traditional things like flowers and fruit boquet (boring and over done)... then i googled "bakery delivery honolulu" and this place came up. Being too late to order online, I called out to their shop (thank goodness for the time zone difference) and spoke with Charice who was more than happy to help get an order put together (she was very friendly and made the process go smoothly). A dozen cupcakes later, birthday success!! They were delivered the next day (his actual birthday). Yay! The pricing for each cupcake is what you would expect at a gourmet cupcake shop and delivery fee was nominal. The reviews on yelp were VERY helpful! I'm not one to hide my sweet tooth so after sitting through three days of training for work and discovering the proximity of cupcakes on day one, come day three I threw my diet out the window and marched on in to give these bad boys a try. I originally went in on the guise "I'm getting one for my husband" but when I showed up after lunch with three my cover was quickly blown. They had a pretty large selection of flavors and they were all cutely decorated (and not overly frosted). I decided to try the red velvet, pumpkin spice and got a carrot cake one exclusively for my husband since I can't eat it due to a nut allergy. The pluses: I liked how the cupcakes were clearly labeled and that the cupcakes with nut ingredients were clearly marked. Also when I asked the staff about other ingredients they were also very knowledgable, helpful and friendly. The minuses: the cupcakes were packed individually in paper bags and then into a plastic bag so they got a bit banged up frosting wise by the time they made it home, so a sturdier carrying mechanism would be a plus. Now to taste: Carrot Cake: my husband said the cake was dry, but the flavor was ok and "it certainly didn't scream award winning." Red Velvet: I liked this one. The cupcake was nice and moist with good flavor and the frosting had the right balance of tart and sweet. I wanted more but ate my cupcake too fast. Pumpkin Spice: The cake itself had good flavor but was a bit dry. The frosting had amazing flavor and I could eat it all by itself. It also was adorably decorated. I guess the whole "Cupcake Wars Winners" set the expectations a bit high mentally. They're good but they're not walk 10,000 miles in a monsoon good. But I wouldn't kick them out of bed. read more

if you want great cupcakes, look no further. Hokulani's strawberry shortcake, guava, and lilikoi are just amazing. If you want great service look elsewhere. My wife and I decided to cater a Hokulani Cupcake Tier for our wedding. Working with them was a disaster. The staff was incompetent at every turn. When we visited and asked for a sample of their tiered cupcakes we were told to look at their FB page. Not a specific album or anything, just use your smart phone's data to search for all of their random photos they have posted on their page. We finally decided on a 100 cupcake tier needed to be delivered to the wedding. They gave us a quote and we agreed. After we agreed to the price they slammed us with more fees of tier rental, designing the wedding cake, and delivery. None of this was brought to our attention during the entire conversation. We had to ask and figure it out as we go. It was so unprofessional it hurt. Afterward, we signed everything, paid and left the shop. I get a phone call 5 minutes later saying there was more paperwork they forgot and if we could turn around and come back or else they won't be able to process our paperwork. I was ready to explode at this point as parking isn't free and we had already left. We even asked them several times if there was ANYTHING else to sign which they assured us we were "good to go". The day of the wedding arrives and all caters arrive on time and professionally for the event. Not Hokulani though. They got lost several times and called me asking for directions during the reception. They got there 45 minutes late and while on the phone asking for directions the delivery guy grouched at me saying, "Hey, dis Hokulani.. Where you stay? I am getting tired of driving around and want to deliver your cupcakes already". At this point I am sitting at my own wedding ready to bust a blood vessel over freaking cupcakes. I finally have to have my sibling stay on the phone with them and babysit them to the property. I just couldn't believe it. The next day after the wedding we dropped off the rented tiers to the same half witted sales associate and the day after got a phone call from Hokulani demanding that we return the cupcake tier. It was the final straw. People, if you are in the restaurant row area and are hankering for a cupcake by all means go for it. But if you are trying to plan anything with the sales staff they have running now, just don't bother and save yourself the hassle. There are other companies on island you can go to that will provide a professional product and service. Cupcake Wars? Good thing they based on taste, not service... read more

2.63 stars. Ordered 8 carrot cupcakes for my brother's Bday dinner celebration. Had a friend pick them up later in the day. Mahalo Hokulani for the cute reusable bag, nice touch (+1). Ease of phone order/service: 4+1 (bag)= 5 stars. Keeping the box flat at all times, I opened it after dinner for dessert & noticed three cupcakes were overturned and frosting all over the rest. The cupcakes weren't even stabilized with holders I'm used to seeing. Very disappointed & embarrassed to present, but had no choice at this point. Presentation: 5 (before)-3 (each overturned cupckae)-1.5 (what a mess!)= 0.5 stars. Cupcakes were deliciously moist & spiced well. However the fact that most were ruined was pathetic. Hokulani, please consider investing in cupcake inserts that would prevent them from tipping. Also placing them in the 4-clamshells would have been a better option. New owners and hands down the most unprofessional people I have ever dealt with!!! My fiance desperately wanted a cupcake wedding cake from Hokulani at our reception. I would do anything to make her happy and so I physically walked in and left my contact information, my finace and both sent emails, I called and left our information (again), and finally I called once more and by sheer luck Charise answered the phone. After going back and forth through email Charise and I confirmed a time for us to meet to go over what my fiance and I wanted and to taste some product. I took a day off, and my fiance took a long lunch so that we could meet her at 11:30, as I was flying out on a buisness trip the next day. We showed up and she wasn't there!!! In fact the staff hadn't the slightest clue as to where she was, so eventually called her. I received not a single communication from her that she would not be able to keep the appointment!!! Her response was to have her staff to ask me if I could come back in 2 hours!!! She didn't even have the decency to apologize to me personally for wasting our time!!! Two thumbs down!!! Poor customer service or rather non-existent customer service, and personally the cupcakes are highly over-rated!!! My co-workers daughter makes better cupcakes. read more

I had a bad day that seemed to never end. My boss had a seminar in an office at restaurant row and, being the sweetie that she is, stopped at Hokulani to buy a few cupcakes for us minion worker bees. Lilikoi with lemon cream cheese frosting cupcake...you saved my day. Moist and fruity, tangy and decadent, it was just perfect. I visited Hokulani Bake Shop a month ago with my boyfriend, after watching them win on Food Network's Cupcake Wars. I remember purchasing a few cupcakes from them a few years earlier and remember they were extremely delicious. The shop itself is small and very quaint. I loved the display of all the cupcakes they offer inside the shop, and the staff was very friendly. When we visited, we bought the Red Velvet Cupcake With Cream Cheese Frosting, the Guittard Chocolate Cupcake With Butter Cream Frosting, and the Guittard Chocolate Cupcake With Cream Cheese Frosting. We ended up paying approximately $2.50 per cupcake, not including tax. Because of this price, we both expected an excellent cupcake. However, much to our disappointment, the cake was very dry. Also, we both found the icing to be too sweet to our liking (which was a surprise since I have a major sweet tooth). Sadly, I don't think I'll be going back to Hokulani in the near future. I think if I'm going to have to spend as much as I did for 3 cupcakes, I'll just make my own instead. Everything looked great and the customer service was great. Ordered our cupcakes and couldn't wait to bite into our treats. Well, my friend liked her cupcakes. I took a bite of mine and was a bit disappointed. The flavor was nice and all, but the texture of the cupcake was less impressive. There is a LOT of hype around Hokulani's cupcakes, including winning Cupcake Wars on the Food Network. I'm still trying to figure out what the commotion is all about. I just came home from a party that served Hokulani cupcakes. I had the chocolate cake with the chocolate frosting. The cake itself looked dry like a brownie and also tasted dry :( I honestly thought someone at the party baked them so I politely convinced myself to finish it. They didn't have my wedding favor cookies ready when they said they would. They revised the time the cookies would be ready for pick up 3 times. The design was a special order that was not difficult to do. They managed to place some parts of the design in the wrong place to the point that it was not clear what the design was supposed to be. We take cakes/cupcakes really seriously where I'm from. It is what it is. With places like Bakeshop, Angel Cakes, DC Cupcakes, and Charm City Cakes, it's hard not to be biased when stepping out of the DC/Maryland/Virginia area and trying other places. So when I saw that Hokulani Bake Shop had not only competed, but won the prestigious Cupcake Wars challenge on Food Network (of whom Duff Goldman of Charm City Cakes from my hometown of Baltimore is a regular judge), I figured this place was the real deal. Unfortunately, this bakery left a lot to be desired. I do give them credit for quite a few unique flavors. With options like Strawberry Guava, Lilikoi, and Okinawan Sweet Potato, there's definitely a Hawaiian twist going on here. But a part from that, my overall experience was pretty average. The Red Velvet cupcake was probably the biggest letdown since it's my favorite; it was super dense. And for almost 4 bucks a pop per cupcake, it was pretty hard to rationalize given the size; these things are tiny. It didn't help that I wasn't particularly greeted when coming in here. The store person just gave me a kind of "What do you want?" demeanor. So even biases aside, I really just have to give this place an average rating. Of course it's going to be better than going an picking up a dozen cheap cupcakes from Walmart, but there was nothing here that really wowed me. read more

After feeling hungry from The Whole Ox, wife and I needed something sweet and something quick. We booked it down the street to Restaurant Row. Protip: park in the loading zone when loading up on cupcakes. These guys are geniuses! They have a ventilation fan blowing out over the door so you smell the baked goods as you are walking to the shop. Like those cartoons where the scent lassos the unsuspecting cartoon character into the area where mayhem ensues, my wife and I found ourselves in this cute cupcake boutique. We weren't exactly hit with an acme trap, but we were befuddled to which cupcake to buy. Chocolate Red Velvet, Vanilla, Salted Caramel, Blackberry with Port frosting, and Lililkoi. Since we could not decide on two, we got three. "Would you like a napkin or a bag?" Napkin, these cupcakes won't last by the time we get the car. The blackberry port wine was exotic as it sounds...delicious. We also scarffed the Lilikoi and Salted Caramel, which had a decadent cream centre.
