The filling was creamy and sweet, but super balanced in flavor. not too eggy, not too sweet. it was delicate, Just firm enough to hold together on a fork. It was refined, balanced, and satisfying. I don't think I can say anything everyone doesn't already know. The pies here are great... almost iconic! We got the custard pie today. Their custard is one of the best - creamy, sweet, tasty with a light, flaky, delicious crust. Today, the pies ready to go were the custard, pumpkin, and pumpkin custard. We were there early, 9am-ish. If we came back later there would be more selection. The fruit pies are always good too - peach, pear, apple... Also, you can get a frozen pie and bake it at home. Update 9-27-25. Since we're planning a get together tonight for dinner with some of my husband friends he decided to go Lee's bakery and get custard pies. Since it was more than 1 I called to reserve total 3 and good thing I got there at 9am and they only had 2 more in their showcase display. Maybe some more in the back I don't know. The owner I think said good thing you place your order because it goes out fast. She packed it their reusable bag for the pies. So nice of her. I don't come here quite as often as I'd want to, but for the past 5 or so years, I've been blessed to get their Pumpkin Custard pie during Thanksgiving. It is the absolute best. Everything from the filling to the crust is just perfect (and I'm really picky about the crust). It's been a while since I've been to Lee's Bakery, due to my work schedule. With Memorial Day weekend coming up, I felt like doing something different. So today, I made time to pick up some treats for the office. I got there a few minutes before their 6 am opening. Three others were already waiting outside. Just around 6, the lights came on and a gentleman opened the doors to let us in. I let the others go first so I'd have a little more time to decide what to order. I kept it simple--6 char siu manapua, 6 Hong Kong buns, and 2 long johns. The manapua went into one box, and the buns and long johns in another. Same great service I remember. When I got to the office, I had a manapua and a bun. I thought the manapua would be the highlight--and yes, it was very good--but I really enjoyed the buttery Hong Kong bun. I left the opened boxes for the rest of the staff, after messaging them, and they were emptied before long--a sign that others enjoyed them almost as much as I did. read more

We should have known better that if you come after lunch the shelves will be pretty empty. Just so happened we had dim sum next door and once we saw their sign we wanted to see if they had any custard pies. Today I was walking around Chinatown and decided to pick up their famous custard pie for dessert tonight . Got there about 11am and yes they still had a few more pies left . Service was great- the lady working was very friendly and you can tell she takes pride in the shop. The shop itself is older and warm. There's no place to sit but enough room to enjoy standing. There's many options and everything is on display. The long John with cream is excellent, I don't like crème donuts, but this one is excellent, not too sweet and perfectly fried- but not greasy The mini wedding cookies- excellent. Love it, chewy interior, flaky exterior, perfect size that it doesn't get too heavy, but small enough to crave- so get at least 3! The Hong Kong bun is great! It's got a light glaze on time, super light and spongy and slightly salty! A must have! The pineapple bun is great as well! As if the entire island doesn't know that Lee's has the very best custard and pumpkin and pumpkin custard pies in the state! But did you know that they have delicious fruit pies and chiffon cake as well?!? And sometimes they sell the Chinese rice pouches "harm joong" for a third party that is both reasonably priced and delicious! Also available and more than reasonably priced are other pasteries in showcase. Every now and then I get a craving. This usually happens when I am driving through the area. Since parking can be an issue and I have to be really strategic when parking and shopping in downtown Chinatown, I am so thankful for them obliging me and running my custard pie out to the car as I roll by. Of course I always have the exact change and tip ready! And I have been fortunate that there was never a line when I drove by in the afternoon. Original owner of Lee's used to be a pastry chef at the other bakery that was famous for their custard pies. He left Delite to open his own bakery. Shhh I preferred Lee's better. At Thanksgiving it is rumored that the line is so long for Lee's pies that the line wraps around the block! I wouldn't know...I have never gone on Thanksgiving. I recommend parking on the backside of their storefront which is located on the ocean side of the harbor.
