I called/emailed 3 or 4 places trying to find someone who could do gender reveal fillings and most of the bakeries I tried could not. Hokulani Bake Shop was prompt in answering my emails and so helpful with letting me know the price breakdown, due dates for order info and payment, available pick up times, and options for cupcake flavors and decorations! Baking up happiness... One thing that I have in common with Hokulani Bakeshoo is their hours of operations...sigh! So nabbing these treats has always been a struggle as the last time I was able to do so was when I had jury duty to ease the annoyance and it's been forever since then. Fast forward to tonight the first of the Taste of Aloha Night Market right on the lawn of Waterfront Plaza which will be happening every second Saturday of the month so hoping that will give me greater chance of the sweet treats. Loved that they had a combination pack though I just wanted the single $6 Guava and Red Velvet and decided to get one of each, love that it's packaged individually so it's totally shareable, the vibe at this market was quite crowded but with the music playing it gave it such a festive and fun night and hope they will be here next month as well. I really love this bakery. I love this bakery so much that I had my birthday cupcakes made from here. What's nice about these is that the cupcakes are not too sweet so you don't feel that sugar rush after eating one. That probably means you should eat two. Anyway, the shop is small but has exactly what you need right in front of you. The cooler contains the cupcakes for the day, but go early as they run out! There are also bags of other snacks including shortbread, ranch, pretzels, and very cutely decorated cookies. They even have cards for purchase if you need to get a card last minute with your cupcakes. It has been such a long while since venturing to this little bakery at restaurant row. We had a birthday at our office and needed to pick up something sweet. I volunteered to head to hokulani since it was convenient and the baked goods never disappoint. It's fun to walk into the store to see so many varieties of cupcakes, cookies and just random swag for sale. One thing that immediately struck me was the bakery was the same as 10 years ago but not. There were signs around the store with instructions such as which box will be used depending on the cupcake purchase etc. I kinda felt like possibility the store was asked some of these questions a number of times so they made signs. So off the bat I didn't want to ask too many questions about their products or make small talk. With the signs felt as though if they are tired of customers asking the same questions. But isn't that part of the experience? The person taking my order was nice and business like. I ordered seven cupcakes and two sprinkle cookies. The cupcakes were unique in flavor such as shaved ice and with old favorites such as triple chocolate, red velvet. I went to pay and the bill was almost $50. Sticker shock. The cookies were $4/each. That means cupcakes were over $5/each. The cupcakes were on the smaller side but super beautiful. They also tasted yummy but paying that much for 1 cupcake is a lot. Possibly overhead is high? I am all for supporting local businesses but prices for a cupcake are a little high. Also...possibly remove some of the signs. It really is about the total experience when buying from a store. Red Velvet Fill Cupcake!! Gosh, absolutely recommend. This place has been around for some time now and still lives to its name. We ordered about 36 cupcakes for my sons birthday and everyone kept asking me where I got it. The cupcakes are not fancy at all. They look home made to be honest.. but its sooo soo goooood!! They aren't open for a long time and its really first come first serve if they ran out then they are done until the following day. The cupcakes I pre-ordered were red velvet and double chocolate. The red velvet was ok but not as moist as other cakes I have tasted. The chocolate was dry and didn't taste like chocolate. It was a different flavor. Costco muffins are more chocolatey than these cupcakes. For $6 per cupcake my whole family was shocked and disappointed. My daughter suggested going to Whole Foods next time because the red velvet cupcakes tasted similar and are half the cost. The thing that really bothered me was the unfriendly people I dealt with. I tried to pre-order my cupcakes at 11:45am the day before pick up which would be at 12 noon the next day. They said it was too late to order online to get a discount because it had to be 24 hours ahead of time. I felt it was 24 hours ahead of time. I was late to pick up my cupcakes and asked if that was ok because they close at 2pm. No answer to my question on the phone. I arrived at around 1:30pm to pick up my cupcakes and I told them my name and sorry I was late. No answer. I said I pre-ordered cupcakes can I have my cupcakes. Finally the person turned to the back counter and got my cupcakes. There was a sign on the counter showing a discount if you bought 12 cupcakes. Apparently if you buy the cupcakes that are there that day, you can get a discount. If you pre-order you get nothing. Not even a kind word. I took my cupcakes and I didn't even get a thank you. My family and I will never buy cupcakes from this bakery again. No one wanted to try the chocolate ones because they looked dry and had a scant amount of frosting. read more

I LOVE Hokulani cupcakes because they are moist, tasty, and the cream cheese topping is delicious. I tried many of the different flavors and enjoyed each of them, but my absolute go to flavors would have to be their GUAVA, RED VELVET, OR SHAVE ICE CUPCAKES. Due to inflation, the cupcake prices have gone up and now they cost $4.75 each, but if you buy 12+ more it's $4.50. You must order in advance for big orders. They also charge for little props to add to the cupcakes if you're gifting someone. They usually sell out of cupcakes by lunch time, so it's best to go early. Terrible. Hokulani used to be the gold standard years ago for a fancy cupcake. Haven't had one in forever. Now? $12 for two. Expensive for a tiny cupcake. Super dense and almost hard, texture is like an old cupcake left out. It's so bad I'd seriously consider disputing the charge on my credit card if we had spent any more money. I came here twice. The first was to sample the flavors to see if I liked them so I could place an order for my birthday since I'm coming from the mainland and I'm a baker. The flavors and the ingredients are really fresh for the red velvet and guava (which is all I tried) they both had that moistness to the crumb and the sweet tanginess of the cream cheese frosting. I got the jumbo size which is basically a jumbo size muffin tin and I got the cream cheese filled inside because on top they don't do a huge amount of frosting so that's the only drawback. their guava cupcake tasted exactly like guava, so I'm curious if it was a artificial flavor or if they actually use guava to make it taste like that read more

It's been years since I've treated myself to the delicious cupcakes that Hokulani Bake Shop offers. They're located in restaurant row at the Waterfront Plaza. Ever since the $1 movies shut down, I don't really go in the area so it was very nostalgic being there where I use to go catch a movie with my friends. Hokulani use to have a booth in the Pioneer Plaza where I would usually get a cupcake after work before I head back home. My favorites are and still the strawberry guava cupcake and their red velvet cupcake. I also picked up a few of their other flavors like their chocolate, carrot cake and ube flavors. The cupcakes aren't as moist as I remember them to be, but they do taste the same deliciousness I remember them to be. I'm usually not a frosting person and usually scrape the frosting off of cupcake, but with these cupcakes, I only wish they would add more. Their cream cheese frosting is top notch IMO. Definitely still one of the top bake shops on my list. I wish there were more locations. Definitely miss their location in Pearlridge Shopping Center. None the less, if you're ever in the area, definitely worth checking out their cupcakes. read more

I Used to love coming to Hokulani bake shop @ Resturant row few years back, cause I liked their RED VELVET flavored cupcakes it was so soft and moist, but recently just paid a visit back to Hokulani bake shop on 7/11/19 Thursday and man sad to say their CUPCAKES were so DRY, Was a bit disappointed specially when you expect the cupcakes to be very moist and soft and for what you pay for each cupcake $3 or more per cupcake you expect to be good. Nothing like a sweet cupcake at 9 AM after a job interview at Restaurant Row. Stumbled here to validate my parking ticket (which they do with a purchase, they validate 1.5 hours) and was pleasantly surprised at the nice, cool AC and full case of cupcakes. For 3.50 youd expect a bigger cupcake that takes more than two bites but the texture was great. Soft inside but nice, crunchy (not too crunchy) top. Frosting wasnt too sweet and decorations were minimal. They sell extra decorative features for 0.50. Glad I got to enjoy cupcakes from a place thats heavily praised. Everyone should try once! But people seemed to really like these cupcakes and they made it easy(ish) to order online (but not your phone, gotta be a computer). $4 per cupcake is ok pricing considering the quality and the fact that it was ready to pick up at the agreed upon time. Among one of many of my connoisseur crusades, red velvet is one that is near and dear to my heart. It's my go to flavor for cupcakes always. These cupcakes are some of the best I've had, especially the red velvet. Another favorite of mine is the lilikoi. In an unsuspecting manner, I've passed by here many times, waltzing in and buying cupcakes unintentionally like some kind of weird fever dream. This review is strictly for the cupcakes here and I'm sorry, they are cute but taste bland. Not much flavor and the cakes do taste from scratch but heavy on the baking powder/soda taste. I suppose the person I shared the cupcakes with mentioned that it had a strong baking powder taste which made me notice what that taste was. Wondering how they were able to win a cupcake championship.....I ended up buying six cupcakes today for a meeting I had to attend. So I had six different taste testers and asked all of them what they thought. (We had the red velvet, coconut, orange, double chocolate). While they had an extensive selection of chocolate cupcakes, we went for more of the citrus and POG flavors that were available.
