Had we known about the hotel ahead of time, it would've been a better stay. The hotel is not a bad place, at all. It's full of history and class. It's clean and central to many locations in town. The chief complaints I have are these: 1. The walls of the hotel are paper-thin. You can hear *everything* going on outside your door and the rooms next to yours. 2. There are no TVs in any of the rooms. For #1, nothing to be done about it but go in forewarned. For #2, not knowing that was totally our fault. The TV situation is listed on their website. But TVs are such a standard item, who thinks to look for that note..? :P Now. The best part of our hotel stay was Ulina. She was the front desk rep when we got there. She was extremely friendly and very helpful in getting us settled in. She went above and beyond her duties to make sure our 2 night stay (that turned into a 1 night stay due to job issue) was stress free and comfortable. If you stay here in the future, ask for Unlina, you will not be disappointed. :) read more

The ambiance was wonderful, definitely recommend going during the holidays. You can't beat the romantic lighting, striking decor, and Christmas vibes! The main dining room only has three or four tables, so I recommend calling ahead for a reservation. The shareable plates and desserts were delightful, but there were some issues with the mains: Brussel sprouts had an incredible glaze, a perfectly balanced dish. Salmon bowl was okay... kimchi and seaweed salad were excellent but the salmon tasted like the pre-marinated cuts from any chain grocery store. Large plate, I could only eat about half. The steak was cooked to a perfect medium rare! The portion, however, was very small. Chicken pot pie was frightful, I wish I would've taken a photo of it. Presentation was... deconstructed to say the least. It looked like a slop of filling plopped on a plate with ~half of a biscuit in the middle of the mess. A dissatisfying disappointment, especially for a $40 dish. The desserts were wonderful! Rating four stars instead of five due to the menu being an overpriced for the overall quality of the main courses. Beautifully restored 150 year old hotel right on Main Street. We stayed Friday (Cornish Xmas) & Saturday (Nevada County Toy Run) and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Peak pricing at this time of year & you need to make reservations well in advance. We were in room #8 that faces the parking lot and was accessible by the staircase leading to the back of the hotel. Room had a super comfortable bed, quality linens, claw foot tub and was reasonably quiet. Good coffee, scones & a mushroom Frittata that was ok at best included with your stay. Parking is a nightmare as mentioned in other reviews,so we used Uber on one outing to save the space. Street parking can be a challenge especially during the holiday season. We received a call from the hotel prior to our stay to confirm our reservation and to let us know the street would be closing at 3pm due to the Cornish Xmas going on our front. I asked for earlier check in, which they allowed and I thought the good communication was a nice touch and professional. We visited the Tinsel Tavern, located in the basement of the Holbrook,which I would describe as a Seasonal,Adult Ice Castle with over the top decorations in an antique Speakeasy. Good times, good drinks and good service. All the employees were great. Overall a fun holiday weekend. read more

We've been in Grass Valley for 20 years. The corporate investors and owners of this hotel did a nice job in the remodel, but what came as a result was overpriced, premade drinks, a snooty scene, and an uptight, woke bartender that rolls her eyes and mutters under her breath for simple tasks. In this small town, locals will not put up with such an attitude. Maybe this is why it was empty. Grass Valley needs a nice, welcoming, upscale bar that greets you with warmth and kindness. We went to the Holbrooke Hotel for a girls night and we had an amazing stay. Four of us lifelong friends in our early 50's. The room was clean and beautiful and we enjoyed the outdoor balcony. We had dinner there and the appetizers and entrees were all so delicious. We had a drink at the bar and also went down to the Speak Easy in the basement and enjoyed a drink there as well. The firepit on the back patio was a nice touch. We enjoyed the free coffee, scones and Frittata in the morning, as well. The lobby and interior of the hotel is stunningly beautiful, and the hotel is walking distance to Mill Street and the all of the wonderful shops and restaurants there. We had a great time! read more

We came here for drinks and some apps and the service was not good but the decor, drinks, and food were amazing. We want to come back to try again. I got the Bill drink with the egg white and he got the manhattan. The waiter was totally off on the flavor profile for my drink but luckily I liked it anyways. The calamari had such a unique twist of Asian flavors I could have eaten another order by myself. The inside is gorgeous and the outside patio has string lights and fire lamps. We booked early for a group visit of the area and ask for specific things prior to our arrival and Everything was in line with our expectations! Location is ideal for walking the entire surrounding area and keep your parking space due to limited room for guests. They are working on this situation re: towing non guests to assure enough spaces. Had a really nice meal at the Holbrook Hotel Restaurant. The Brussels sprouts were cooked perfectly -- crispy on the outside, tender inside, and full of flavor. I also tried a quesadilla, and it was so tasty and satisfying. The atmosphere is charming with that cozy historic feel, and the staff was kind and attentive without hovering. I would like to start with the parking. Almost impossible. The lot was full upon arrival (I'm assuming due to the holiday). Parking is shared with the hotel, bar and restaurant. We had to wait quite a bit to park. From the parking we "Guessed" we should walk through the back door through the dining area to the tiny front desk. We were given our key and then went back through the dining room and parking lot to the carriage house. The room was sparsely decorated and cold upon arrival. The bed was super comfy. The sink in the room was a bit strange but the clawfoot tub was cute. Unfortunately when I went to take a shower the next day the tub felt like I was going to fall through (I weigh 100 lbs) Now back to the arrival. We called the front desk to find out how to turn up the heat and had to leave a message. Sometime during the late evening the room heated up (Not sure how this happened we didn't have a thermostat and never heard back from the front desk). It was a bit challenging changing clothes in the cold. The walls are extremely thin. The hotel does offer to give you earplugs and if your light sleeper, I suggest you take them up on this offer or bring your own. The walls are very, very, very thin. You can hear guests conversations throughout the hallway and all the way out the door. Noise from the street is also pretty prevalent. I had read the reviews and anticipated this so I brought headphones that were noise canceling to help me fall asleep and drown out the noise in the hallway. Now to The dinner: We arrived 15 minutes early and were told we could have a seat in the bar to wait for our reservation. We ordered a drink from the bartender (and that's a whole Nother story) and received a very tasty drink. However, the bar top was sticky and dirty. I couldn't touch the bar top without getting syrupy hands. I watched the bartender several times use a cleaning rag to wipe off glasses she was serving drinks in (she had overfilled almost every drink). Luckily about this time we were seated for dinner (I did not finish my drink). To my dismay, we seated in the bar area at a table that was empty when we arrived, (It was directly behind were we were sitting at the bar) and I'm not sure why we had to wait to be seated due to the fact that there was a reserved sign on the table. The bar was loud, noisy and the overcrowded (SRO by this time). I did not enjoy having to sit in the bar for my holiday dinner. Had I known we would be seated in the bar I wouldn't have made the reservation. Perhaps in the future this can be noted ahead of time so request can be made for the dining room or canceled. Our dinner consisted of a four course meal. We started with the super green salad, which was delicious. It was dressed with a creamy green goddess dressing salad consisted of sliced beets, greens and croutons. Perfect. Next onto the risotto also delicious however, I was full from the bread and the salad before dinner so I couldn't finish the whole meal. Lastly, we had the chocolate torte. It was topped with a black berry sauce. It was perfect size and delicious. I only had a few bites because I was full. I have absolutely no complaints about the food or service. It was simply amazing. The hotel is located right in the middle of town. You can walk everywhere (which I suggest you do because parking is horrible). If you can find parking at the hotel, keep your car there and walk. Take advantage of the local coffee shops and eateries. We did and were not disappointed. read more

This is a beautiful remodeled hotel with nice indoor and outdoor dining (dogs ok in outdoor dining area). It is located in the heart of downtown Grass Valley with plenty of shops and restaurants to walk to. It has a long history in Grass Valley and they used to do ghost tours around the holidays (not sure if they still do it). The bar is beautiful and the lobby and indoor dining is very inviting. It's classy but still casual. I had a glass of wine and my friend had an old fashioned. See the video..they make it special! The drinks are a bit pricey but the ambience makes up for it. They also serve lunch and dinner with an eclectic menu. They used to have a smoker which made the best chicken wings..and would smell so good on the outside dining patio (bring it back!). I walked in and inquired about room rates. They have two buildings. The clerk told me that the cheapest rates were in a Victorian at the back of the property visible through the back windows. I asked if I could take a look. "NO. You can't go inside." I didn't ask to go inside. I asked to take a look at the building you said was visible from the windows. You can smell the pretention from the street And experience the rudeness from the front desk. Go to Nevada City but don't stay at the National, owned by the same company. read more

My Husband brought me here for my Birthday and I am so happy we celebrated here! The front desk, (who I didn't catch their name) was excellent. They helped with everything we needed such as bringing us robes and extra body wash. The fact there is no TV in the room made our experience all the more quality, I loved the escapism feeling of it all. The fact they kept the Victorian charm of this place but also adding the luxurious feeling to every surrounding it definitely shows how much thought was put into this place. Girls' weekend at the Holbrooke Hotel? Absolute perfection. This place somehow manages to feel historic, lively, cozy, and just the right amount of fabulous all at once. We stayed in a balcony room and loved it--quiet, comfortable, and charming in that old-school way that makes you want to pour a drink, throw open the door, and feel like you're starring in your own delicious little getaway movie. The bedding was yummy (yes, yummy--because that's the word when you don't want to get out of bed), the bathroom felt beautifully authentic and full of character, and I was weirdly obsessed with the elevator. Loved. The. Elevator. And then... the basement cave disco dance party-- a coincidence that they were playing disco music from our era when we walked down the steps. ICONIC. Where else do you get to sleep in a gorgeous historic hotel and then end up dancing in a subterranean stone cave like a glamorous little outlaw? It was the exact kind of unexpected magic that makes a girls' weekend unforgettable. The location is perfect--so close to everything that you can walk briskly in your cute shoes, pop in and out of shops, grab a cocktail, and feel fully in the middle of the action. The bar itself had great energy too--lively, fun, and exactly the kind of place where you want to start (or continue) the night. What really made it special, though, was the staff. The cute dark-haired bartender on Saturday was a total delight, Angie, the restaurant manager, was warm and wonderful, and Fiona at the front desk made us feel completely taken care of. This hotel is so incredibly beautiful. It is located in Grass Valley on Main Street. My husband and I came here the other night with a few family members for the Thanksgiving dinner. The dinner cost $80 per guest and included appetizers, salad, soup, main course and dessert. The hotel is so classy and gorgeous. The tables were beautifully decorated and the main room had a warm crackling fire place. In the bottom floor, they had a separate room full of Christmas decorations, trees and nutcrackers. The food was super delicious. I recommend the garden green salad full of mixed greens, avocado, beets and light dressing. The parsnip soup too was also very good and the main course (I got the risotto) was amazingly delicious as well. Nicest service as well. I heard you can stay here in the hotel. I have never stayed here overnight but, I heard that the rooms were spacious and comfy. Definitely want to come back for dinner again soon. Highly recommend. read more

Gorgeous historic hotel in historic Grass Valley. Parking lot in back in an area with limited parking. Complimentary coffee, house made scones, and warm breakfast (frittata.) Fiona, was soooo helpful in the am providing me with a throw blanket so we could sit on the patio with our coffee and stay warm. She also graciously responded to my request for stevia quickly and without hesitation. Thank you Fiona (I hope i spelled that correctly!) the hotel is charming and well appointed and has a restaurant and basement bar on site. The bed was really comfortable and the toiletries smelled great. A nice selection in the honor bar in the room if you are looking for a convenient beverage. I would definitely stay here again, great accommodations and staff was delightful. Made us feel really special! read more

We ate in the dining room last Friday night. The hostess and server were very friendly and provided good service. They were quite busy and we did not have reservations but they worked us in. My friend is gluten intolerant but they said they had several items that would work for her. She ordered elk and I had oysters Rockefeller and the green goddess salad, both were tasty. The oysters filled me up so I only had a bite of salad and brought the rest home for my husband. Which he ate right away. By Saturday afternoon, my husband was throwing up from food poisoning and my friend was sick from her celiac disease. Both recovered in a few days. Stayed here for our anniversary. The rooms were gorgeous, and no TV because it is old, and yes the floors are not completely soundproof, this is not Vegas. It's historic, the decor of the whole hotel is beautiful, learned that 4 US presidents have stayed here. That said it was clean; as updated as possible while keeping the charm of original hardware, and the staff were accommodating. LOVED the historic bar downstairs, cocktails are pricey ($15-$18) but it's in a small town and it is a beautiful space. The restaurant was great too. Had their house made gnocchi and short rib. Don't sleep on the appetizers, the burrata with herb rubbed bread was SO GOOD. read more

I recently had 3 couples stay here for New Years Eve from out of town. They thought the staff was great, and loved the ambiance, but all three couples said their beds were terrible and they had a hard time sleeping. I'm reluctant to have out if town visitors stay there again, as this is inexcusable. They also paid a fortune for their rooms because of the New Years Eve pricing. I'm very disappointed! read more

For the price of our room ($500) there was no coffee/tea service in the room or in the hallway as there was when stayed at the Holbrooke previously. There was bottled water. We were placed in the Victorian home out behind the hotel main building. Room was ready at check in at 1:00 pm. We had to get dressed and walk to the main building for coffee. Coffee was bitter. The room was nice but small dominated by the king bed. No closet. One luggage rack. One hand towel for two people. Not much space to put anything so the bedside tables got crowded. Room temperature was controlled by the front desk and you had to call to get the temperature adjusted. Breakfast included from 9-11 am was a bland frittata. Coffee at breakfast was good. I would ask more questions about what room I'm booking next time. I also will avoid super busy times like Cornish Christmas. read more
