Nice stay. Older motel type property (not sure why it is called an inn). The rooms are in great shape and nicely decorated. Happy vibes here with an outdoor garden area and lots of seating even lounge chairs. In front of each room is also a table and two chairs for dining al fresco. Pretty spot though you hear the traffic going by when outside. Inside the room it is faint. I liked that my room was one level (nobody upstairs). However, I had a neighbor in the next room who got up at 5am and was heavy footed and had a dog. The noise they made traveled into my room. They woke me up and kept me awake way before I planned to get up. Noise level depends on who ends up next to you. Luckily they were not there for my entire stay. The room was just right and I like the way it looked and the covenience of a kitchen with a full size fridge and stove top and microwave. I bring my own pans. I am glad because I didn't like the pans in the room. I appreciated that the fridge didn't make hardly any noise. Less than mini fridges in most hotels!! Bed was comfortable and management was reachable via text message and provided information via texts that was helpful. Beautiful trees on property and I liked that behind my room was left unmowed-good for nature and made it private. I also loved that the windows opened (four windows in the room (on both sides). I really wanted a quaint place to stay for my birthday and I'm really glad we chose The Pines Inn and Cottages. Upon first arrival we saw the place had festive Halloween decorations, which I love. Tony immediately came out and greeted us, then directed us to where to park. He then gave us a quick tour of our room, then gave us a tour of the rest of the outside areas. I love how personal Tony was and his genuine enthusiasm in showing his establishment. After we had settled in, we were able to inspect the cottage and it was ideal for two people. Everything was exceptionally clean. The kitchen had utensils, dinnerware, and cookware. The bathroom was also in good condition. The only inconvenience encountered was from my husband (as he is a tall individual) that the toilet area was slightly cramped. We were told that our rooms bed was just upgraded to a king size. Let me tell you, that bed was big and ridiculously comfortable. We both slept so good, we couldn't stop talking about how comfortable it was. As we left for dinner the ambiance of the place was truly enchanting. The beautiful lights created a magical environment, and the canopy with the projector added to the inviting atmosphere. He had kindly opened some wine for us, and we helped ourselves to it upon our return. Tony asked us before he left, what we would like for breakfast. I opted for toasted bagel w/ cream cheese & honey yogurt. My husband asked for avocado toast with fresh fruit. The next morning, he delivered our breakfast to our room. Stayed for the first time in Grass Valley - usually stay in Nevada City CA but decided to branch out. We got a list from our travel club and decided on this place. Boy-o-boy are we glad we did! Very cute place on Rough and Ready Road about 3/4 miles from town so 100% walkable on sidewalks most of the way. The room we had was a studio with small fully equipped kitchen and bathroom/shower combo. King size bed, very comfy. There was some traffic noise during the morning commute but it was totally quiet at during the day and night. The facility backs up to a small school and beyond that, a nice bunch of trails to walk dogs. Dog friendly to all dogs so our service dog was a happy guest as well. Owner Tony was super friendly and hospitable and made us feel welcome the minute we pulled in. He provided Restaurant suggestions and gave us a discount coupon for one of the local spots. Internet and cable provided of course. We enjoyed local hiking spots and wandering around town. The pines has rooms and cabins so choices for sure. There was a nice yard with grill and seating as well as outdoor games. He also provided snacks and juice and coffee in a lovely covered "outdoor living room" next to his koi pond. The cutest place I have ever stayed! The lady doing the check in was outside when we arrived. She did everything from the iPad and we were in our room in less than 5 minutes. The rooms are so cute! A little kitchenette was included in our room. You can tell the attention to little details that went into the design. They have great soap and lotions in the bathroom. The outside has a cute little setup. There are flowers everywhere, a little pond, and a fire pit. They gave us a complimentary bottle of champagne for our anniversary. We also chose from 3-4 options for a light breakfast that was included as well. We will be back!!! read more

Enjoyed our stay, very peaceful. We will definitely stay here again. Not a far drive from downtown, so it's perfect!

We stayed here the last weekend in October and I got the feeling that half of the motel was closed for renovations. There was construction going on in the room next to ours, and there were a lot of old cars and piles of junk outside of half on the rooms. Our room was cute and the inn is charming. There is the potential of this being a really nice place, but it lacked basic functionality. When we got there I had to ask for towels to be placed in the room, there was not one towel in the place. There was a small kitchen that is super cute, but I had the feeling it's all for show. The stove has an oven but there were no over pans and very little cookware or cooking utensils. It would be hard to actually cook in this kitchen. We were given a continental breakfast, but there were no, napkins, Kleenex or paper towels in the room. We have to use wash cloths from bathroom as napkins during our breakfast. We were ask if we wanted them to set the fire pit area up for us, when we said that would be nice we were told us there would be a $6 fee for the firewood. No where on the website or in all of the reviews I 've read about this place, was there a mention of a $6 firewood fee. As I mentioned above this motel is charming and with a little more attention to the details, this motel has the potential of receiving a 5 star rating. read more

My wife and I had a fabulous time here. Tony, I believe the owner, was very welcoming. He made us feel at home. We rented the cottage and it is a nicely appointed cottage. We thought it was just perfect for us. Not too big and not too small. The bed was very comfortable with nice bedding. And the kitchen had everything available, such as toaster, microwave, over/stovetop and the pans and utensils needed. And we found wine glasses which inspired us to get some wine, ok we really didn't need to be inspired , and had a nice evening. The property is close to shopping, the local supermarket and the freeway but yet set back to feel like you are in the woods. I would say the only quote and quote bad thing is the traffic from the street and It being a across from the cemetery. BUT I slept like a baby and I have no superstitions about the cemetery. This is definitely a place to go. We are going back. read more

I gave The Pines five stars after my last visit. I wish I could do that again, but I can't. I made a reservation on April 23rd, and requested the studio with the cutest checkered kitchen and most comfortable bed . I stayed in that studio last time and it was available so I booked it for two nights. I received an email shortly afterwards which confirmed it. I was on the road to The Pines on the 30th when I got a call, saying they had a king bed available and would I like to be upgraded at no cost? I said, "Does it have a kitchen?" "No," was the answer. I said, "I'll just stay with the room I have. I like having a kitchen." I would later find, though, when I got around to checking emails, that they had sent me a confirmation moving me to the "king-sized-bed" room before I declined that offer. When I got there, he directed me where to park but when I grabbed my suitcase expecting to go to the room I had booked, he informed me that I didn't have the room but another room instead. I was so tired and anxious to get to a relative's home for dessert that I didn't think much about it. He opened the alternate studio and it was cute, and although it had a teeny tiny kitchen (not like the other room), it was doable. I wouldn't be cooking, just making coffee and breakfast with the toaster. When he first opened the room, he pointed out that the heating unit in the wall was pretty loud, and I would probably prefer the space heater. It was adequate, so I had no problem with that. The bed was not as comfortable, being a bit too firm for me. I rolled around a bit before finally falling asleep. Perhaps the other bed had a pillow top? Not sure. The bathroom was very pretty but the sink was slightly larger than an airliner sink. Over the teeny sink hung a large, dramatic mirror with a frame around it that projected out over the sink. I soon discovered that if I wanted to lean over the sink to wash off my makeup or to rinse after brushing, I had a choice of either hitting my forehead on the mirror frame, or backing away a smidge to clear the mirror frame but then splashing water over the front of the sink - on the floor and on me. If you get this room, bring a bicycle helmet. I figured, "Maybe this is why they gave the room I booked to someone else." It certainly sent the message that someone's else's experience was more important than mine. My reservation could be moved around like a chess piece, first to the room with a king bed but no kitchen, and then to this other room. The substitute room was clean and tasteful - it just not as nice as the room I had booked. When I specifically ask for a room and they confirm it, I expect to have it. Seems pretty straightforward. The bottom line is that it is bad business to break a reservation that was confirmed a week earlier, then to try to make me feel like they were "giving" me a better room "at no additional cost" to hide the fact that they had given my room to someone else. Surely, I would have figured it out when I saw that they had sent a "revised" reservation to my email before they even proposed that switch to me. What I wonder is - if they do that to me, would they do that to others? So sadly, I am giving them this rating. read more

I can't say enough. Every expectation was exceeded. Tony, the owner, greated me and offered a choice of 3 breakfasts delivered when I wished. He was such a gracious host. The coffee in the room was great...not hotel coffee. I ate on my bistro table outside my room which had a bubbling fountain next to it. It was lovely. The bed was great, room was quiet, very clean and fresh smelling. The lawn area next to the inn is magical at night. He has firepits, corn hole, bocci and several sitting areas. We were so fortunate to book this place for my nephew's wedding. Really responsive people, and very nice! They provide a small kitchenette, and enough eggs for a small breakfast. The bed is huge and comfortable, and it feels very private. They have good wifi, and Netflix. Water pressure is on the low end, but sufficient, and they provided a nice array of toiletries. This is one of the cutest cleanest and most of all peaceful places I have ever had the pleasure of staying. My husband travels all through the state of California. I have stayed at many hotels, motels, and cottages. This one is top notch not only are the cottages cute but they have everything you need from pots and pans to body lotion. The front porch was so darling not to mention the fire pit the barbecue, the corn hole games and a hammock. We try to make it back to Grass Valley at least once a year, since we love the Yuba River so much. This was our first time staying here, and our first time meeting the owner/host, Tony, who runs the place as if he is welcoming everyone to his family--he has filled each room with thoughtful details and he is eager to help make one's stay as pleasant as possible. The Pines is located about a half-mile from downtown Grass Valley--it's a cluster of rooms and one cottage with a nice big yard underneath big trees and lots of chairs and hammocks to lounge in. During this past 4th of July weekend, we stayed in the cottage (#10), which had a bedroom and living area and a full kitchenette space (refrigerator, stove, microwave, etc) and had a hammock outside which we used quite a bit. Everything is super-clean and charmingly decorated. Our fridge had a water filter pitcher in it and a wire basket full of eggs, vegetables, and snacks in case we wanted to make breakfast or felt hungry (I made omelettes for us on our final morning there, and toasted bread we had bought, because there was a toaster in the cupboard). The bed was super-comfortable and we so appreciated the fitted sheet, since you don't usually get those at this price point. On our final night there, Tony, the owner, and James, the innkeeper, invited us to join them for margaritas and hotdogs with their friends and other guests and we enjoyed ourselves thoroughly--you couldn't imagine a sweeter, friendlier, and more welcoming bunch. Heartily recommend this place (unless you're a misanthrope) and hope we can come back here year after year. read more

We booked this hotel after reading the reviews.... It exceeded our expectations! We originally booked a two night stay at the beginning of our vacation and decided to come back at the end as well. The mgmt was wonderful and checked on us several times to make sure our stay was comfortable. Some have complained in reviews of traffic noise, but only one suite is on the street and the noise was manageable. Would 1000% recommend!! I personally truly loved and enjoyed my stay at this location and can't wait to come back for a longer stay ! read more

Just spent a long weekend here. I love this place. Last summer this was a stop over for us on a trip farther up into the Sierra's. After a couple of nights here then, it has now become our destination place. You can't beat the scenery and the place is fantastic. The owner, Tony and the manager, James really care and go the extra mile to make sure everything is perfect for the stay. We were given farm fresh local eggs for our breakfasts! I recommend this place highly. We will be regulars here from now on. Being dog friendly is an extra plus. Great hiking in the area and old town Grass Valley is historically very cool. It's a 6.5 hour drive from Los Angeles and in my opinion well worth the drive. read more

Just stayed there... very nice quaint place...Staff/Owners extremely friendly and accommodating... Positives... great bed, very clean room. Very Quiet inside your room. The grounds are Fantastic to sit outside at night, conversate, and have BYO drinks. There were many seating areas, big grass lawn area, and plenty of mood lighting. My wife and I really enjoyed our stay...some quirks, but my wife called it charming. I agreed. Negatives... close to the road so when outside, you do hear the cars zooming by every now and then. But for me, not a big deal. All in all? A nice stay, but we didn't enjoy Grass Valley all that much and ended up taking the short 10 minute drive to Nevada City where we spent most of our time. It's places like these that are worth keeping around. And I hope they can thrive. They capture the essence of a quirky, cool place to stay that isn't so stuffy and main stream. Nice little motel. When we first pulled up I told my wife... "from now on I book all the hotels" lol. I was not impressed by the exterior. The interior though is actually very nice. I stay at AirBNB spots a lot and this actually had that feel. The foundation is raised wood so you do sometimes hear people walking but it wasn't a big issue at all. They had lots of small perks like special soaps, bagels, water, etc in the room. I was trepidatious at first but pleasantly surprised. Wife gets a pass on this one ;) read more

My brother and I recently stayed here kind of by accident. There was a large wedding in town the weekend we stayed and the place I normally go to was full. The Pines came recommended by another hotel in town. I am so glad we had the opportunity to visit! I will always be coming back to the Pines. The cottage we stayed in was clean, super cute and has a fully usable kitchen. There were thick robes and slippers for us. The 2nd morning of our stay there was an adorable little wire basket with fresh eggs, cheese, peppers and mushrooms placed on our patio! There was homemade soap in the bathroom! There are multiple places to hang out on the property with cute furniture, a hammock...even Corn Hole! On our 2nd night, the owner provided some lovely Pinot Noir. I absolutely felt pampered. The Pines Motel is a Gold Country nugget! I have stayed at some of the best hotels in the world, and the vintage charm of the location belies the world class 5-star service they provide. Tony and Peter are impeccable European hoteliers in every sense of the word. Fresh flowers on the porch for every guest, beautifully appointed rooms, organic and delicious snacks, hand milled soap and make-up remover. . .I wanted for nothing during my stay. The AC is so whisper quiet I had to check to see that it was on. In the evening, they light tea candles throughout the property to transform it into a magical place for guests to enjoy. I had to check out early, and the owners contacted me for an update on the Jones Fire so that I would not worry about my family. That type of kindness and compassion is priceless! Wonderful spot!!!! Tony greeted us with a basket of eggs, veges, cheese, and fruit for our following morning breakfast. So sweet! The room was clean, clean, clean, and we loved the decor. There are only 7 (or more?) rooms so it has an intimate feel. The room is super well stocked, the kitchen and bathroom; it even has 2 2 bathrobes hanging in the closet. I asked for help with the heater and Tony immediately obliged. At the end of the line of rooms is a firepit, ping pong table, corn hole, and lots of chairs to enjoy the day or evening. We didn't have time to enjoy the outdoors space but we will be sure to make time during our next visit. Overall, we loved the place! It has a camp/woodsy feel, thus the name-The Pines Motel. I booked this through Hotels.com since I was looking for a quaint place that allows dogs on my way to San Mateo. The pictures alone were charming in a roadside / vintage meets mod California motel. Listen, I don't do motels, however reviewing this place, I could tell it was the "motif" and something a bit more. These are adorable cottages, airy, nice room, cute bath with modern fixtures paying homage to the "American road trip" from a bygone era. The beds were soft, cushy, and the bedding was so pretty and warm. Every detail was well thought out. The owner recommended nice trails to take our dog after a long car ride, it was very beautiful! This is not a creepy motel, or motel 6. This is a gem. read more

Let me just say that I am in love with this place! Stayed here for a weekend with my boyfriend and his dog and it was such a great experience. We met Tony who is the owner and he made our stay so great! We also met his two furry pets that got along great with our dog and they played in the grass area they have for dogs. I love that this place is dog friendly and how cute and quaint the cottages were set up inside.
