We booked this directly after reading through a Grass Valley travel website. I was a little leary because a few reviews weren't great, but I called anyway because the price was right & they had availability. Barbara answered the phone and she was so pleasant and helpful, I knew it wasn't a mistake. Peter greeted us upon our arrival. He was just too sweet! Walked us around, gave us our key, etc. He told us about the various areas of interest and we had a great conversation about where they moved from. I was sorry to not meet Barbara, she was visiting family. The house is darling, lots of antiques and nick-nacks, cabinets full of crystal and old teacups & China, lots of family pictures. It was like walking through my great-grandmother's house. We stayed in the Brunswick room, overlooking the backyard. Quiet & peaceful, like we stepped back in time when things were simple. I was pleased that there was no TV (they do have WiFi, don't panic). Overall, it was a great stay and I hope to visit again. read more

Had a lovely time at Elam Biggs B and B in Grass Valley. Just stumbled across this B and B on Google. Our room was first rate and decorated to perfection. The breakfast was top notch and did I mention the cookies? Barbara has been making these blue ribbon (the blue ribbon is next to the cookie jar) sugar cookies for over 20 years. I knew they were good just by looking at the cookie jar. We even bought 3 dozen to take home. At $.50 per cookie it would have been a deal at twice the price. Check out Elam Biggs. ABSOLUTELY CHARMING! This is a home away from home! With all the care, amenities and love you would expect. A Victorian masterpiece with stylized turn of the century furnishings. Each room is equipped with a private bathroom, and the value of a night stay is exceptionally reasonable at other rates in the city. The home is conveniently located and is within walking distance to the center of town with restaurants, movie theater and shopping. With a homemade breakfast, and quiet mornings and evenings on the porch or in the backyard. If you're lucky you may even be treated to extraordinary magic tricks. We stayed here for our anniversary a few years and are sorry that it has taken us so long to write this review. Barbara and Peter were simply amazing hosts and really made us feel like their home was our home. We had access to cool drinks in the refrigerator and delicious cookies during the day. The highlights of our stay besides the comfy, cute room, were the amazing breakfasts. In fact, we bought Barbara's little cookbook and have made our own dutch babies several times...each time we make it it brings back great memories of Grass Valley and our anniversary. Also, this b-n-b is very quiet since it's not right in the heart of downtown. However, in saying that, it's only a 5-10 minutes walk to the downtown restaurants and shops. So if you don't mind a bit of walking, stay here and enjoy the food and piece in quiet instead. I can't right this review without mentioning Peter and his magic tricks. Stayed with two others in three separate rooms at the Elam Biggs BnB. Quiet, delightful, friendly but not over-bearing. I stayed here with my boyfriend for two nights and we enjoyed it very much. We stayed in the empire room, it was very spacious, clean and we felt nice and comfortable. The breakfast in the morning was delicious, and Peter had the best attitude. Peter was very informative and knows a lot of cool places around there if you're not familiar with the area. It's taken me far too long to write this review, but that's not because we weren't totally enamored with Elam Biggs. We arrived at EB after spending a less than satisfactory night at Deer Creek Inn, and were thrilled with the friendliness, coziness, and attention to detail that we found here. I was going to grade at 4 stars, but when i thought back to how friendly and gracious Peter was, there's no way I can't give 5 stars. If you're visiting the greater Grass Valley area, do yourself a favor and stay here! read more

We found this charming inn on yelp while on a mystery trip. We called looking for a room for the night. Got a voicemail, left a message. We went to dinner, tried multiple other hotels and at 9pm were still without a room since Priceline had booked us into an overbooked hotel. At 9:15 pm I received a message on my cell phone from Peter at Elam Biggs apologizing he had missed my call and making sure I had found a place to stay for the evening. When I told him, No we were still without he made accommodations for us. We arrived at 10 pm and were welcomed into the most charming little Victorian I have been in up to now. Peter was so friendly and hospitable. Our room was comfortable, adorably decorated and best of all outfitted with a claw foot bathtub. I enjoyed a relaxing soak and a fabulous night. We just stayed at Elam Biggs B & B this past weekend for my great niece's wedding. We were originally planning on staying in a hotel using points, but there wasn't anything available. Elam Biggs had availability and was basically the same rates, so I jumped on it. It was our first experience with a B & B and we were very pleasantly surprised. We had our own private bath which was great because I couldn't have imagined a shared bath when so many of us needed to get ready at the same time. We reserved the Empire Room which is the only guest room with a king size bed. It was very comfortable with super comfy blankets & pillows. My husband commented after our stay that his back felt great! He travels alot, so always notices when a bed is super comfy and amenities are a step above. Back to the bath - I was very happy to see that we had what appeared to be brand new towels, sparkling clean and not at all like sandpaper!! Super soft, like cotton balls!! Even the tissue was high-end! The owners advised us when we checked in that breakfast is normally served for guests at 9:00 am, but because we had so much to do for the wedding, they were going to serve breakfast a little early, so that WE could get to our stuff. Who does that? Elam Biggs does that, that's who!! And, the breakfast was homemade-Dutch Baby (which we were told is much like french toast), muffins, sausage, fresh sliced watermelon, piping hot homemade applesauce, orange juice. Mmmmmmmm!!!! The owners of Elam Biggs were very easy to work with. They even put up with the crazy shenanigans of my niece and her friends into the wee hours. Kids. Needless to say, I would stay here again in a heartbeat should I need to travel to Grass Valley area again. read more

I stayed here three days at the beginning of November when we had a birthday party for my dad's 90th who lives in Grass Valley. This was a great refuge and the proprietors were wonderful. Peter and Barbara did everything possible to make our stay comfortable and relaxing. The breakfasts were truly something we looked forward to everyday. Our room was clean, quite, and the bed comfortable. The outside grounds were manicured well and a nice place to have coffee. We will come back in the warmer months to have breakfast at one of the outside tables in the beautiful gardens. I highly recommend staying here. read more

I love Elam Biggs!!! Peter and Barb are very kind and accomodating. The grounds are so peaceful. I enjoy taking a big ol' bath and then going outside to sit on the lawn and just look up at the stars. I've been going for about 10 years,but more recently. Excellent locally roasted coffee and a breakfast complete with a magic show!!!!! It's a great location for hiking and swimming at the South Yuba, day spas, live music events, and theater. Anice way to getaway, stay active AND relax!!! read more

Wow! What a cute B&B. It's a very charming house, right across the street from a Mexican restaurant, with themed and adorably-decorated rooms. The owners were very sweet and provided us with anything we could have wanted. Our favorite part was the breakfast. It was truly a feast--some of the most delicious applesauce, crumb cakes, and bacon I have had in my life! There was something for everyone at the table, and it was hard to stop eating. I was full for the rest of the day. We came down for the KVMR Celtic Festival and actually enjoyed our room so much that we left midday to spend some more time at the B&B before returning for the nighttime concert. Peter was too sweet and made us feel right at home. We were coming from work so we were unable to make the check-in time; he stayed up for us and was sure to greet us with his friendly, welcoming presence despite how late it was!
