I was finally able to get the Holy Grail hype. All vegan and made to order, so the donuts come out warm and super light, not greasy or heavy at all. We started with a 4-pack just to try them and somehow left with two 9-packs. They're that easy to keep eating. The classic glazed and cinnamon sugar were standouts, but honestly everything was good. The matcha and chai were both smooth and not overly sweet. They were perfect with the donuts. The space was bright and calm. Don't underestimate how many you'll want. We miss them already. read more

So, I've heard about the Holey Grail, but never came across one. I was in the area and just walking along while my daughter was at Color Me Mine for a friend's birthday party. I just had a savory meal and almost didn't walk in because I was already full. Thankfully, I still had some time to wait so I thought, you know what, treat yourself to something sweet. I kid you not, so glad I did. I love the fact that it's a simple menu, the donuts are made to order and what topped it off, it's Hawaiian, seriously was sold! I opted for their limited season "Black Sabbath" and it was sinfully delicious. It was warm and full of flavor, just so good. Yes, the donut is on the smaller side, but you're getting quality. I also had their Hawaii vanilla latte, good as well! The gentleman that helped me at the register was very cheery and full of energy. He was helpful with recommendations and was hospitable. I had Holey Grail for the first time in Oahu years ago and was so impressed that I brought their donuts home on my flight back to CA for my family. I've since had Holey Grail again at their farmers market truck, and now their Santa Monica location. Guava is one of my favorite flavors, so I was super excited to see Guava as a seasonal flavor. I was super disappointed by the barely noticeable guava flavor. I ordered it without Bee Pollen to make it vegan. Always looking for a guilt-free treat (or at least the most possibly guilt free, haha) that's actually delicious. Holey Grail donuts inside the Santa Monica promenade were pretty damn close. I tried the Wild Guava and the Reincarnated. They were okay taste wise but I guess I was thinking the flavor would come from the dough as well as the topping. In my case the guava and maple flavor came from the glaze and the cake part itself tasted the same in both donuts. I was also disappointed because I bought 2 donuts before I went in the movies and assumed they'd be good to eat after the movie was over and that was a mistake! When I opened the box to eat it later they were inedible because they were super greasy! Have you ever eaten something that left you saying "oh my god" when you take a bite? That's what happened here. They serve it to you warm and freshly dipped and dressed and it is FANTASTIC. These should be eaten warm and enjoyed upon the box being handed to you. The made to order vegan donuts were visually pleasing with fun glazes, but it did take a bit of time to prepare. For first timers, it was difficult to choose from various flavors, and I wished they could do a dual flavor donut. The taro donuts were smaller than anticipated and tasted a bit dense. The lilikoi (passion fruit) was pretty fragrant, but I didn't taste much of taro flavor in the donut, probably overpowered by the passion fruit glaze. Overall, the donut wasn't too sweet, and I finished in seconds. It wasn't the best donuts I've had, but 3.5 stars (a bit pricey) bumped to 4 stars for creative flavors. read more

Everything looked good, but since I wanted more than one to take home, the tasting box of 4 ($16) called out to me. I picked the L&L, J dilla, miso honey, and lilikoi. It came in a very fancy looking black box--10/10 on presentation! Since the donuts are made to order, there was a slight wait, but well worth it! BF and I tried them all and found it hard to pick one favorite! Love that 20% of their sales go towards charitable causes. While there's street parking, you're better off parking at the Edgemar, which has covered parking, and getting your ticket validated. My partner and I arrived midday on a weekday, and we were the only customers. None of the specialty flavors spoke to us, so we settled for the classic Dandelion Chocolate. The tiny donut was delicately wrapped up into a single-serving customized takeout box, and, as an obvious Holey Grail rookie, I burned my fingers as I tried to take a bite. The donut itself was most comparable to a springy mochi-style donut in texture, with a mildly sweet taste. In contrast, the chocolate icing was equal parts melty and tasty, if not moderately one-dimensional -- something I may have griped about more if the donut lasted beyond 4 bites. Cognizant that Holey Grail is most known for its rotating selection, I paid them a return visit for a flavor that called my name: the Kobocha Spice (an eclectic mash-up of Kona coffee and kabocha squash). The resulting glaze was almost caramel-y in texture, with a La Croix-esque hint of java. Again, I was left underwhelmed. What really blew me away was this is a genuinely good donut and perfect since my sister wanted to some vegan desserts. I've gotten Holey Grail through the food truck at the Mar Vista Farmers Market and then got pretty addicted. This location on Main Street is big with an open space and it didn't feel crowded in the early evening. The staff were very friendly and offered some suggestions. I got a variety of donuts such as the Original Sin and Hail Mary since I generally like fruity donuts. The best part was that it's hot and fresh - the outside of the donut is crispy and the inside is fluffy. It is made out of taro which adds a little bit of nuanced flavor which I like. It's generally street parking/meters and the area has a lot of other hips spots. The bathroom was clean and I like that there were cute merch and Hawaiian products available for purchase. read more

Chaga Chai is rolled in chaga, cinnamon sugar, and rishi chai. Original Sin is glazed in Hawaiian vanilla bean and salted maple. Amazing these taste like regular donuts.
