It's my hardware store. I've found the Goldilocks of hardware stores. JUST RIGHT. Pocket Ace- just, no. Emigh- across town, ghetto 'hood but not ghetto prices. East Sacramento- that closed, now it's a plant store. Who needs a hammer when you can have a succulent? Elk Grove: $$$, plus being asked if I need help multiple times is scary (five times in five minutes, rule of thumb). Newbert's: yes, this was the best but it's been closed for decades and is probably a cannabis dispensary now. Archie's: also closed. Don't get me started. Why: Selection: This store has pretty damn much anything you could need, with limits. Kitchen, hardware, tools, electrical, garden, paint, nuts, bolts, chemicals. It's not a warehouse, it's a STORE. So calm down if you don't have every option, you're going to get in the ballpark. This fall I found a great manure fork here (no I don't live in Iowa but it's a great garden tool and mine got "lost" in my last move). PS, the big orange didn't even have one. Price: I was pricing Weber bbqs this summer and the units here were 10% less than pocket ace or Elk Grove. That got my attention. I recently got a great shovel for $16.99 on sale. Yes, a sale. You will have a range of options and usually there is a cheap(Er) option than at other stores, and better made. Recently I was pricing shovels at Home Depot and their cheaply made unforged (but costly) shovels couldn't match the shovel I bought at Hollywood. Help: someone can help you if you ask but you can browse without feeling like you are being stalked. Oddities: my last time here while at check out a customer came in cradling a duck and said out loud "I have a duck that needs repair." No one was fazed. In the age of Home Depot and Lowes it's tough choice going to the little guy and taking your chances on price and availability or to the mega-box and support modern day slavery as well as the the destruction of the middle class. Well Hollywood Hardware does not disappoint. Great prices. Great selection. Friendly service. Went for a box of 3" star drive deck screws expecting $20 a box. Guy led me right to them and put them in my hand. The price was $11 which made me happy, but then I get to the register and she gives me another 10% off 'cause I'm retired! My husband and I love this store. Staff always answers his questions for the right tool or fixture to use for his project. Once they loaned him a tool he needed for a small portion of a project. we enjoy all the cooking and dining items. I often buy cleaning and gardening equipment. I drove by Hollywood Hardware for 12 years before finally stopping by one afternoon. This is a true old school hardware store tucked into a vintage Hollywood Park strip mall just off Freeport Blvd next to the Little Caesar's. Parking is pretty tight and may require a little walk. The store has a lot of hardware type materials packed in from floor to rafters. You can find a lot of the basics including fasteners, plumbing and electrical, lawn and garden, and other basic supplies including some unique finds. They have a lot of older home stuff like two prong cords and speciality items not usually found at the larger stores. Prices are a bit higher here than the warehouse home improvement stores and the selection can be better at other stores, especially for building material and garden. To be fair, a true hardware store wouldn't traditionally have much lumber or plants - you would go to a lumberyard or garden store. Service may be better here, but I don't really have a problem at other stores anyway. This may be the best place for those specialty items you need living in the area with vintage houses needing speciality equipment. However, most people are either shopping online or at the big guys for selection and price. Hollywood Hardware probably won't win an Oscar, but they are still a nice part of the hood. read more

I been coming here for a long time and just recently purchased spray paint for a project at my employers house. Upon parting ways, and not being reimbursed for the paint i took it with me and no longer need those colors, so i attempted to get my money back to purchase items i do actually need. I was denied getting my money back or a store credit. In fact when i accepted the clerks decision without argument she insisted she call the manager acting like she was going to try to help me. Instead, she bad mouthed me and presented my case in such a way that not only did he deny it, he called me crazy for wanting to return it. I didnt ask for a manager. I didnt offer much at my defense because the paint wasnt used and i had my receipt. I should be able to get my money back. Their shelves are bare and their service is even more bare and sparse. In 20 years, this is only the second time ive wanted to exchange something. If im going to get treated like crap, might as well go to a big hardware store that honors their return policy and might actually have what i need for any job. Hollywood Hardware is my go-to hardware place, even before I check any of the big box stores. In fact, the way I discovered them was when I couldn't find the appropriate plumbing fitting I needed for a project, the sales associate at one of those big box stores told me directly, "if anyone has it, it'll be Hollywood Hardware." Every time I've been in the store, I haven't gotten more than two steps in the door before I'm greeted warmly and asked if I need to know where to look for something. You won't find everything for design and finishing here like you will at those warehouse places, but you will find all the staples. Just a great, local, old fashioned hardware store -- the kind your dad or grandpa used to go to. This place is cool! I needed A really specific type of screw, and they had it! The staff was friendly, and it had a mom and pop feel to it. Prices were definitely reasonable, if not cheap. I appreciated not having to walk through a gigantic warehouse to find something the size of a dime. It felt way less intimidating and the staff tried to help me find it, though they were a little busy. What really got me was they have things besides "hardware". They have a very impressive kitchen selection- from unique gadgets and utensils to cookware. I really enjoyed browsing the kitchen section, it's a pretty expansive selection! read more

It is easy to drive right past it on busy Freeport Blvd., but once you discover this great store, you will visit it again and again. This is truly an old-fashioned hardware store complete with open bins as well as packaged items. The variety for the size of the store is good, and if you have any questions or need to find something, the clerks are quick to help you. In the case that they do not have an item, they can order it for you. Unlike a big box store that has an over abundance of products, they have a carefully selected stock based on years in the business. The customer service is top notch: I have always been assisted by a friendly, smiling face. It feels like a small town store in the midst of a busy town. I have also called and asked if they had something in stock, and they were polite and easy to talk to. Trying to find help in a big box store is like finding a needle in a haystack. Hollywood Hardware is your classic mom and pop hardware store. They have a good selection of tools, paint, nuts, bolts, and gardening supplies. Their selection is smaller than the big box stores but you then won't need a GPS and a city map to locate the toilet plungers. This store is really great when you're in a hurry. I recently stopped in for paint and was finished in five minutes. It takes me five minutes to park and walk the 1/4 mile to the right aisle at some of the larger stores... It's definitely a different shopping experience at Hollywood Hardware. It's not just the convenience factor, the staff is accessible, friendly, and knowledgeable. We had a fun house party and somebody got all plastered and somehow cracked our toilet which created a leak...where did I go for answers? Hollywood Hardware. I patched it up with some cement epoxy. Good as new. It's within' walking distance of my home so It's extremely convenient. If you have a question they usually have an answer. Just look for the old guys in plaid. The kitchen sink. It's the most invaluable part of the house - we wash our hands in it, pile dishes in it, clean our vegetables, soak things, and when my wife's not watching, I wash my motorcycle parts in it. When it sprung a leak mid-day Friday it was pure panic fright scare. We were cooking up a dinner for the family that night, had a pile of vegetables that needed to be washed, dishes, and steamed beets that needed to be drained and rinsed, and ton of other things you take for granted that require the sink. Crazed, my wife started calling plumbers and we couldn't find one that could make a quick visit. So, without my wife knowing, I started to take it apart and a new panic set in. These parts were from the 50's and I wasn't sure I could replace them... I took a gamble and put everything in a bucket and headed over to Hollywood Hardware. The minute I walked in a fellow stocking the drink fridge saw me and uttered "... okay, follow me." He found every piece I needed - gaskets, new drain, washers, plumbers putty, thread tape, and pipes. He suggested a few tricks of the trade, and $19.80 later I was installing all the bits while my wife made us tasty cocktails. It was smooth as silk, no leaks, and we were on autopilot for the rest of the evening. Good find by my girl! This place is great. i went there for a gas line for a new stove i bought. they had everything i needed at comparable prices. I even noticed that a bag of fertilizer (same brand and weight) was going for a buck cheaper here than at lowe's. But Susan, the woman who was checking me out, said that I could take my items and come back tomorrow and pay! What?! maybe its covid "supply chain problems" but the shelves here are literally bare. went looking for the most basic pieces of door lock hardware and they had nothing. lots of unpopular stuff remaining looking like it's been there for thirty years. lots of taped up packaging. i also needed a file and found something that "would work" but all of the useful stuff was gone. counter guy was friendly to the few people ahead of me that he knew but didn't even acknowledge my existence. definitely seems like a regulars only type place. wouldn't even care except the rest of the experience was so lacking it bothered me. i'd suggest going elsewhere and don't think about making a special trip here unless you're already in the area. read more

Horrible customer service! Apparently the customer is never right at this place. Ordered a rake and had it delivered to Hollywood hardware. Got an email saying it was available on Tuesday. Called to tell them I would pick it up on Sunday. Got there on Sunday. And they had sold it to someone else...my order... then they spent most of the time telling us that we were wrong and that it was delivered the week before (well I didn't order it then so it couldn't have arrived before I ordered it) three different people just wanted to tell us it was our fault that they sold something with our name on it to someone else. The only saving grace, was a younger woman who had some sense that customer service is important... apologized, and re ordered so it will arrive in 4 days... too late for this time, but I guess I can use it next year. Oh there's also a sign outside that says they deliver. So we asked if they could deliver it to our place, since this was a hassle for us to come down to them. Was told no a few times, then the younger woman said she would personally deliver it. If you are going to get any good customer service it will be from her. Don't bother with anyone else. But seriously?! To argue with a customer,tell them they were wrong, making it worse, when we are already frustrated that they sold our stuff that we already paid for. That's not right. (In the inventory it said -1, lol) When a company messes up, it's there job to take responsibility and to do whatever it takes to keep the customer happy. Go above and beyond. Maybe offer something else, since it was their mistake. Also what type of hardware store has leaks in the roofs, and buckets in the aisles, I feel like they should know a few people to fix that. It was hot outside and I was hot under the collar from running around town, however, my attitude quickly changed when the super sweet store clerk directed me to the kitchen and canning supply isle. I scanned the shelves and stared in awe at the impressive collection of high-end jars and canning supplies. In their outstanding selection of kitchen gadgets, implements, canning supplies, and jars I spotted Italian Bormoli Rocco stuff. These jars are also known as Quattro Stagioni, and they are a regular item at this humble little hardware store. So there you have it. Yep, this is the place, kind of like a situation comedy, and you can provide the laugh track. Story 1: I needed keys to my new office made a few weeks ago. I go in, wait in line and meanwhile there's somebody returning keys they'd made that didn't work. It's my turn and I tell the counter guy I need a few keys made. He looks at my keys, looks at the machine and says, "well, I can make them but they probably won't fit." "Um - Huh?" says me. "Key machine is not aligned right." He nods to the guy with the problem who just got his refund. "Sixth returned key today, I'd advise against you having your keys made here. But I will if you want me too." Uproarious laughter. I exit stage center. Story 2: I've got this stupid watering/sprinkler system that the previous owners didn't have dug down deep enough. And the ex hired someone incompetent to fix a few leaky sprinkler heads - and now they're broken again. And now my trees are dying because the ground is too saturated! But this new, cool friend of mine is fixing it all for me. Digs it up. Spies the problem right away. "See this pipe?" he says, "It's too thin, not glued in right, leaking water from the crappy seal." (I play along like I know what he's talking about). Plus it needs some kind of esoteric washer or flange or dohickey thing. So off to Hollywood Hardware we go. My friend asks for a few feet of the same kind of PVC pipe cut. The sharp gal behind the counter takes one look at my too skinny, shameful sprinkler pipe and nearly kills it dead with contempt. "You're going to replace it with that," she asks my friend, eyebrows raised, shaking her head at the doom and tragedy that will fall upon my yard if we make the repair with that skinny-ass, no good pipe. "It's too thin you know." He knows, shrugs his shoulders at the futility of it all, but we need to match the existing stupid system. She finally acquiesces. Finds the right pipe (better! thicker!) and gets the piece cut. Rings up that and the other dohickeys and sends us on our way for under $20, washing her hands clean of our potential disaster with another little shake of her head. On to help the next poor sod. What a cute store! Hollywood Hardware has that classic 'mom n' pop shop' feel, all the standard items you would need in a hardware store, friendly and helpful staff members, and HOLY CROW their kitchenware section is more like an upscale gift shop. Candles, jewelry, decorative tins, home decor, bags and purses, scarves... if we weren't hungry and on our way to lunch, I could've shopped that one section for at least 30-40 minutes. Awesome stuff! This store is in my neighborhood, and 9 times out of 10 I cannot think of a good reason to go to a big box chain instead of here. Occasionally, very occasionally I've found some prices to be a little higher here than the chains but I'm happy to say that most of the time they will be comparable or less. I like that with many items like nails and bolts I can get what I need and not have to buy a whole box. Compliments to the home and kitchenware buyer-great items that I don't see everyday, a lot of things that make life just a little easier-I got a peanut butter stirrer there once for natural peanut butters that separate and a spout for pouring grease from a frying pan. One thing I love is that if you see an item like a cast iron pan, or a sifter, they come in just about every size. Service is the best I've had in any hardware store. Staff is knowledgeable, friendly, helpful and always available. This place fills a void in my area because it's either go north to downtown or south to the Home Depot(s). Love the original lighted sign and the feel and layout of the place, and correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that it's been a family owned business, the same family, since it opened. read more

This is an old-school hardware store, which you can clearly see the minute you check out the great kitschy '50's blue neon sign with a giant hammer. This is not the place to go if you are looking for a big paint color selection. This is not the place to go if you are looking for a big fixture selection. This IS the place to go if you are looking for just the right nut or bolt or to problem-solve your fix-it dilemma. They are service-oriented and willing to help. Hollywood Hardware is a great store. I fell in love with the place on my first visit, and they've been my #1 choice in home goods stores ever since. They almost always have what I need and they're pretty friendly and helpful too. There is one old curmudgeonly dude who always cracks me up. He'll begrudgingly help me find stuff, and then kinda look me over like 'I sure hope you have a man to help you with this.' I love the way the store is set up. It's small and easy to navigate. They even have a home & gift section. It's not a place most folks would consider for gift shopping, but they have a great selection. It's the perfect place to go for a housewarming or wedding gift.
