After purchasing the Laguna Wood Lathe from Keith, and at the wife's insistence, it sat in the garage until we could take the beginners class at Rockler with Nancy. I am glad I waited. I probably would have broken something like a finger or my wrist. We came in early to purchase some items for the Laguna Lathe that I thought I needed and in doing so we met Nancy who very graciously took us in and started early. We were the only members in attendance so it felt like a private lesson session. Nancy went over all the safety items and explained what each part of the lathe is called and what it does. Nancy talked to us as a peer and not as a lowly beginner, which was very helpful and really made the session enjoyable. I was very nervous at first but Nancy gave us encouragement and pointed out what we were doing correctly and gently explained what could be improved. We wound up making mallets instead off the ball that was pictured in the class description. That was a welcome surprise. Overall we learned a great deal and now have the confidence to continue making turned objects. My next project will be something not sure yet. But I know it will 'TURN" out great thanks to Nancy's help and training. read more

The classes they offer are AWESOME!!! I've been looking for classes in the Sacramento area for a while now and I'm so happy I found the ones at Rockler. I spent $85 and drove 45min for their cabinetry class and the instructor started off by announcing he has never built cabinets. There was no structure or plan to how he was going to teach us, he had a carcass that he had built just before the class that he did not go over how to build, then he spent OVER AN HOUR of a two hour class trying to build the door for the cabinet but he kept choosing the wrong router bits. There was no preparation or self-accountability for teaching paying customers. Only three of us took the class and 2/3 of us asked for and received refunds after the class was over. When asked if the person who normally teaches the class maybe called out sick, was told no, he was scheduled to teach it. He then threw everyone else in the store under the bus and took no personal responsibility for having not checked the schedule OR prepared ANYTHING. Excuse after excuse came out when he saw we were less than impressed. I was offered to come for the next cabinetry class but I will not be returning for any of their paid classes. read more

I live right up the road and I always come here for any woodworking tools. Many of the larger retail stores do not carry the intricate tools and equipment that Rockler does when it comes to woodworking. Their staff is really knowledgeable and if you ask for assistance they will help you find the right product and they don't hover while you look at the items on the shelf (which is very much appreciated). I was staying the weekend in Rocklin and I had a few minutes to spend looking around. I travel quite a bit and I usually stay in a hotel close by. I walked into the store and started browsing. I found some bird's eye maple veneer that would have complimented a marquetry project I'm working on and picked it up. I counted four employees working in the store while I was there. I went up to the counter to pay for the item and waited. Waited some more. I looked around the store and saw that two of the employees looking in my direction. I waited for five minutes and decided that they had better things to do than have me pay for the item I had selected, so I left it on the counter and left the store. Yesterday I went out on a wild goose chase for a barrel nut and specific bolt to reassemble a piece of furniture. After 15+ years and 3moves something (ended up being the nut) was stripped and prevented the item from being assembled. (Whole separate story) 1st stop: Lowe's - I always find the team at Lowes more helpful than HD and yesterday didn't disappoint! The gentleman in screws and bolts looked at what I had, looked through some possible matches but didn't have what I needed. Walking out, he caught up with me and suggested Rocklers and Roseville Ace. Thank you kind sir! 2nd stop: Rocklers - it's close and specializes in unique type fixings for furniture. This will be it! 2 gentlemen (1 could have been my granddad) again looked at what I had, came close (the head of the bolt was a bit bigger and too long but we could cut it and rethread). I didn't end up finding what I needed but the gentlemen there were sos helpful and kind I'll definitely be back next time I need a furniture something or other and HIGHLY recommend them! read more

So I will preface this review by saying I am not a woodworker. We are trying to DIY some of our smaller home improvement projects/repairs since it's so difficult to find help during the post-COVID rush of backlogged work. I found that I needed an obscure part for some cabinet doors that I was installing. A Google search popped up Rockler having it in stock, otherwise I could order it on Amazon and receive it in a few days. Rockler was actually cheaper, and I also really wanted to finish the project that day. I knew about this store but had never visited before. I went on a Sunday afternoon and it was very busy. I looked for the part for about 15 minutes because I knew it would be difficult getting help. Finally I waited at the checkout area and a worker there was able to point it out. Checking out was a breeze and they were very friendly. I will stop by in the future now that I have a good feel of what they have after wandering around for a bit. read more

As always, the staff were interested, courteous, and helpful. James was exceedingly helpful, listening to what I was trying to do and then advising and giving me great tips I wouldn't have thought of. He was even patient with my many questions. Rockler has it all- great tools and materials at reasonable prices, with more specialty items like router bits than you'll find at the big boxes. Most importantly, I go here for the advice. I have been patronizing Rockler ever since their competition was rude to me. I have found the staff helpful, informative, engaging and willing to laugh at my dad jokes. The selection of products is great, and I recently purchased four major wood shop tools from them, (planer, drill press, lathe, and bandsaw) as well as a host of accessories and consumables. The prices are great, and the tools themselves are awesome, even at the low end of the price spectrum where my budget resides. I'm very happy with the professional quality of these new additions to my home shop, they are truly made for the woodworking aficionado. There are 2 bathrooms; both very clean and have changing tables. They do classes here. The parking was super easy and it's right by a grocery store and outdoors store right next to it. I brazenly and somewhat foolishly decided to refinish an old coffee table (as an impromptu gift for my wife) that despite being very high quality, was showing all the signs of 20+ years of continual use. Like a kid in a candy store, I went to one of the Box Stores and loaded up on some tools (shop vac, orbital sander etc..) and bought what I thought would be all the stains and finishes I would need. Long story short: I got the sanding done fine but when I applied the stain it came out drastically different than what my wife wanted. Instead of the subtle grain variations we were expecting, we got something that looked closer to a backgammon board. Clearly, I had not done the necessary research. I was feeling very discouraged when a friend told me I should take some pictures and go into Rockler for help. I was cheerfully greeted within about 0.86 seconds of entering the building. The sales associate introduced himself and briskly walked around from behind the counter when I told him I needed some advice. Even though they were only a few minutes from closing, he thoroughly answered the onslaught of questions I threw at him and patiently offered advice and directions on how to accomplish what I was looking for, and recommended the products he felt would be most helpful. I never felt any sales pressure and I never felt as though I were being patronized for being a novice. Nor did he ever seem to be rushing me (even though by the time I left it was only about 3 minutes before closing). At one point in the conversation, another sales person who'd overheard us, who's name I regrettably did not catch, approached with a piece of furniture finished in the way I was considering, so that I could see first hand what it would look like. Since I'm not a professional or even an expert, I can't comment on the completeness of their selection other than to say the store was very clean and organized. The prices seemed perhaps a bit higher than the box store but I strongly suspect it's more because they're selling the good stuff vs simply charging more. (the brand of stain they had in there was one of the ones I kept seeing heralded as one of the best when I was doing some online research of how to salvage my project) However, with regards to getting helpful friendly advice (knowledge without pretension) and quality products, one would be hard pressed to find a better place to shop. I doubt I will ever buy anything Rockler carries from any other store. read more

UPDATE BELOW--- Do be careful and get employee names when checking stock or asking advice. I called to check on several items I wanted before driving the nearly 100 miles to the store. I checked stock and price, since some were on sale. I know I can have it shipped, but the items were large and shipping was much more than the gas. Despite my checking, once I arrived, I found two of the items (naturally two of the heaviest!) we're not in stock after all. The employee tried very hard to sell me a like item that was nearly 3x the cost. I was disappointed but figured I'd be nearly even since my main purchase was on sale. No, it wasn't. Yes, I'd checked with the store since the website said limited quantities. The employee on the phone didn't mention the sale price was ending that day! And yes, I did say when I was coming (that weekend) and how far I was traveling. They would be, however, happy to sell it to me for full price. So, two big items I'm not getting. I talked with two guys about my disappointment that router tables had changed, which meant I couldn't buy the leveling screws for my older model table. I did get a new insert, however, to fit my new Dewalt router. Imagine my surprise when the Rockler insert didn't fit my Rockler router table! I mean, come on! I'd lamented the fact that the designs had changed but no one thought to say that so had the inserts??? So, I did get the smallest of the items I wanted (shelf brackets). I didn't get two others. And I was sold an item that I can either drive two hundred miles round trip to return (they don't sell the old size inserts, either) or ship -the single thing I was trying to avoid- it back. Wow. Been going to Rockler for over ten years. That's how I have the old table. It's obvious that they've become another company whose customer service ends the minute your card goes through. That's the biggest disappointment of all. Oh, and I did contact the support folks on Facebook. Two weeks of them saying "we're working on it", then saying "gee, I thought someone else was going to help you." I guess dropping the ball is now a vision statement. Amazon sells some Rockler stuff on Prime. That's the only way I'm buying their products again. And Woodcraft now has a Sacramento store so I can still get specialty stuff. You have to wonder how many folks they can disappoint since it's a finite consumer base to begin with. Huge bummer. 2/20: Returned the insert and had simply great service. Returns to the kitchen fridge are tougher. Ended up picking up a number of things I've been wanting. The service today certainly offset the experience in the store last time. I still had to make a return trip, true. Not happy about that, but I'll be back. Update to the update: it figures! Bought drawer slides for the Rockler stand I bought there. Wasn't sure what fit, so i asked. Yeah. Now I have three sets of slides that won't fit. I guess I will be back. To return something another employee recommended. Since they opened in October '15, I buy a lot of varied products from the Rocklin store. Very helpful staff offering good advice on all woodworking topics. Every staff member is knowledgeable but each have certain areas of deeper expertise. I have only good things to say about he staff. The free Saturday Demos are pretty basic but overall they are good. I learn something every time I attend. They also have classes at the store which I have not taken. After seeing the SawStop "Hot Dog" Demo, I was convinced I should upgrade my 20 year old Unisaw but like many, I did not actually purchase a new saw due to $$. What sealed the deal for me was I witnessed what could have been a horrible tablesaw accident that the sawstop tuned into just an embarrassing moment for the operator, I ordered the SawStop. So far I have purchased a new 5HP SawStop Industrial Cabinet saw and a SuperMax 19-38" drum sander. Both word great. The SawStop was an purchased as a safety upgrade replacement for a 3HP Delta Unisaw. Shipping to the store was free. (at ~708 Lbs, it makes a difference). The sander has become my favorite shop tool due to the time saved not hand sanding my projects. read more

This review is about customer service. Sometimes a store's policy is technically correct, but a store has the ability to keep a customer happy by making simple, low cost decisions, but in this case the store decided to forego a customer relationship. In all fairness, the store manager was not present, and when I asked if any of the half dozen store employees who were there were empowered to make a $20 or less decision, the answer was "no". When I started to write this review I thought I would call the 800 number, just to see if someone else could make a simple decision, but again there was nobody home who could make any decisions. I purchased a file frame kit from Rockler online because they have a store a mile from my house. When I almost completed my project I found that the kit was missing one plastic piece that probably cost 10 cents to make. I brought it to the local store in Rocklin, CA because they told me that they have the kits on their shelf. I was expecting them to pull a kit, take out the 10 cent piece and solve my problem. Instead, I was told I can unassemble what I had spent 1.5 hours assembling and return it, then they would do an exchange. The other option was to just buy a new kit. Since my time is more valuable than $20 per hour, I decided to purchase a new kit, but not until I appealed to them to do what was right, since I had purchased the kit from Rockler, not some vendor who I had never heard of. They stood their ground and essentially told me that my satisfaction was not something they would be considering today. I then said I would buy it, but I would be writing a Yelp review to share my experience with others. I thought they would reconsider for a 10 cent part, but they really didn't care. With all respect, I am a business owner myself and I would have never let a customer walk out the door like that. It never got ugly, but I was clearly not happy. I am about to embark on a large backyard project and I would have probably spent a good chunk of change at Rockler, but not now. My 13 year old daughter just asked me "Dad, I thought you said to never write a negative Yelp Review". I responded, "never write a negative yelp review unless you are being honest with yourself, and you have given the business a chance to right the wrong." I think either Rockler truly doesn't care, or if they are open for business, they should have someone who can make cheap, important decisions available. read more
