If you're into nastalgia and old movies then this is the place for you (providing you're not overly concerned with good food and friendly service). I can't say the food was horrible but it kind of reminded me of the TV dinners with the metal trays. Im always friendly to the wait staff when I go out understanding they have difficult jobs but usually expect them to at least "fake it" (especially since they depend on tips). It was so bad I didn't feel comfortable asking for a refill on my drink because I didn't want to inconvenience the waitress. The Hollywood is a very peculiar place. Not necessarily bad, but certainly different. It's decor is all about classic movies, but the cuisine is Americanized Italian. I understand that the original restaurant was a bit different from it's current incarnation. It burned down sometime in the 90's and reopened as an Old Hollywood shrine on steroids. To walk in here is to be bowled over with posters, 8x10's, and miscellaneous chotchkes pertaining to the golden age of American cinema. It's a little overdone to be honest. I noticed at least one instance of a poster showing up twice for the same movie. Once seated, and given a menu, you are reminded that this is an Italian restaurant. The menu itself looks like it was produced on a modest budget, While it seems no expense was spared on the memorabilia, including a larger than life-size Marilyn Monroe statue in the middle of the main dining room. The prices were raised quite noticeably since my previous visit. Take their "Shore Dinner" for example. It went from $11 and change to nearly $15. Receiving bread at the beginning of the meal seems inconsistent. Sometimes the server just brings it to you. Sometimes you have to ask. The pasta I had was on the dry side, and I found the tomato sauce to be a bit thin, and a unique, very bright shade of red. I left feeling like I could have done better making it at home. However, I highly recommend the personal pizza. It's a decent size. Definitely shareable, and in my case, they load on the bacon, and garlic which I appreciate. One last interesting note: The Hollywood is one of loudest restaurants I've ever eaten in when the dining room fills up. They play mostly 80's music which I like, but seems out of place for the decor and theme. However, the music can get quickly drowned out as the noise level of the conversation from the other patrons rises. It reminds me of a bustling elementary school cafeteria. Voices seem to bounce off the floors, and walls rather than being absorbed by them. Perhaps the chief attribute of The Hollywood is how curiously entertaining it is. The owner is also a local music legend. He is a founding member of the Classic Heavy Metal trio The Rods, as well as the cousin of the Godfather Of Metal himself: Ronnie James Dio. Time has not been kind to the Hollywood. This popular neighborhood institution fails to rise above mediocrity in its Italian fare. It's a fun place to gather for lunch or a refreshing drink but it fails to hit any high notes with its food or kitschy, noisey atmosphere. If one measures food quality by only quantity and price this is the place for you. This is an "Italian" restaurant but its red sauce, once a claim to fame, tastes like it came out of a can but is, unfortunately, the predominant flavor component of a majority of the dishes. The popular "parms", veal and chicken are preformed patties from the freezer to the fryer to the plate lacking texture. Salads are listless and wilted. I would give a B+ to the steak and seafood entrees that, although generous portions, are disappointing. I still look forward to the hand cut fries and the fresh bread but find little else to prompt my return. I reluctantly give the Hollywood **. It's lost its luster over the years. read more

I've lived in Cortland for 4 years and always wanted to try this place. Well that was a mistake. The decor was cool but the restaurant itself seems dirty. The trim and art near our booth were covered in dust, and there were weird marks / stains on the wall. Mozzarella sticks seemed like they were microwaved, loaded fries came missing toppings. My veal parm wasn't a cutlet at all, it was almost like a ground up veal patty with breading. The capellini that they served must of been boiling for hours as it was complete mush. My fiance's antipasto salad came with three pieces of meat, two pieces of cheese and no dressing all over a bed of iceberg lettuce mix. They were even kind enough to include the white bitter hearts of the lettuce. We had to wait 10 minutes while our server was busy at another table to get dressing. Overall I regret trying this restaurant and won't be back. I will also be advising friends and family / anyone who'll listen to steer clear of this place. read more

Easily one of the best restaurants in upstate New York. Decor: A little kitschy, but clean and comfortable. Food: I'd give the cooking a solid "good", but absolutely one of the best bangs for your buck in the area. Food is better than any of the garbage you'll find down the road in Ithaca, but portions are way larger and prices are way lower. Service: Legendary. Took my family to this place and the wife and I ordered the seafood platter, the fried clams were soggy and you could taste the gritty batter they were fried in. The oil just oozes right off the shrimp and fish and when I informed the rude waitress about our lunch she snapped at us in defense of the oily slopp . I went to Hollywood recently to visit with a friend after not having gone in years. I'm pleased to say that my meal was delicious and so much better than I'd had before! Although the menu doesn't offer many healthy options, I ordered a chicken dish with veggies and a side salad. Everything was hot and full of flavor. Multiple visits and never really had a FRIENDLY waitress (every one of them is blonde to match the marilyn monroe theme)..most seem extremely fake in their attitude. Stay away from veal 'cutlet' menu items. It is not a veal cutlet. Its like a ground veal patty. I dont know if they thought nobody would know the difference, but I sure did. Cute little diner with great food and solid service. My family and I stopped here after a long day of travel and it was exactly what we needed: a nice, quiet restaurant that would fill us up without costing us too much. The interior is a little dark, but the ambiance is still nice thanks to the lovely decorations and excellent music at just the right volume. I flew into Syracuse to make the drive to Ithaca. There is not much in between those two cities. I was starving and needed some food and a table to respond to work emails. This was exactly what I needed! Ordered the sun-dried tomato chicken and a side of the soup of the day. The food is what it is. Not a 5 star restaurant, but great for a quick lunch. Service was great. Our waitress was very friendly & efficient. The lighting was so dark though that we had to pull out our iPhones and use the flashlight app to read the menu. My husband paid two dollars extra for a Caesar salad that had no resemblance to a Caesar salad and didn't taste very good and the croutons were burned. The angel hair pasta in my dish tasted like it had been prepared hours earlier and plopped on a dish and reheated, sort of rubbery and dry. The sauce was barely warm. I tasted my mother's fried scallops and wished I didn't. While brown and crispy on the outside, there was a cold slimy spot inside, not completely reheated from the frozen state apparently. My husbands chicken Parmesan tasted like it was fresh off the Sysco freezer truck too. I am amazed this place stays as busy as it is! We will not return. read more

REFUND PLEASE. This restaurant used to be good but it has gone downhill in the past years. I ordered chicken parmesan and what I got was a frozen chicken patty and some kind of processed cheese on top of it . The pasta was not cooked properly. There were four other people in our dinner party and none of them enjoyed their meal either.. and you would think that a restaurant that has such a beautiful decor would have pride in their food. We have been going to Hollywood for over 25 years when we go skiing at Greek Peak in the winter. There are very few places to go out to eat in that area, and I can only think of one other (The Community) that has been in business that long. We've seen plenty come and go. Nobody should expect gourmet food in Cortland, but I feel Hollywood consistently provides a warm, welcome environment and good food at very reasonable prices. The menu is very basic but we always like what we get. The portions are generous, there is a range of American and 'Italian' dishes (which are pretty 'American'), and the staff is typically very nice. We always plan a visit there when we are town.
