Stopped in for a matcha and ended up getting a pastry as well. The inside is nice, with classic minimalist coffee shop vibes. The pastry that caught my eye was the tomato pesto danish, so I had to order it. Not only was it visually beautiful, but had the perfect balance of juicy tomato, flaky buttery pastry, rich creamy cheese filling, and all finished with the fresh pesto. Honestly, it was one of the best pastries I've ever had. The matcha was okay. It tasted a little watered down, but it wasn't bad. I've definitely had better. I was immediately greeted and asked for a vanilla iced latte. They definitely know how to make a latte here and the overall balance of vanilla and espresso came through altogether. Every second Sunday morning of the month we meet for coffee. Holsem was new to me, my friend verified it was good before suggesting here. I arrived a few minutes before 9:00am, found street parking a few blocks up. It was almost at full capacity when my friend arrived. Lots of drink selections as well as pastries to nibble on. I decided on the Matcha Mint Latte with oat milk and he ordered the Maui Banana Iced Latte. I grabbed us a table on the front patio. He wait for drinks. Love that the drinks came in glassware. We both enjoyed our drinks. There was a steady flow of patrons moving in and out. Definitely a chic spot for some caffeine. Will be back when I'm in the neighborhood. read more

The latte was really good but the cortado was a little bitter for my taste. I ended up pouring it into my latte. They also offer their specialty lattes in powdered form to purchase which is actually a great deal. It's $9.99 for a bag and it makes 5 lattes. I wanted to try them so I bought one of each flavor. Honestly starting to like this place each time I come! I was craving their Woods Latte but they changed their menu. The options are still pretty unique and good. I ordered the Nordic Blueberry Maple Latte which wasn't too sweet and had a nice blueberry flavor to it. It honestly reminded me of the Blueberry Pancake Latte from Mostra Coffee. This place really does have the best banana latte. I usually just pick up and go but today decided to stay and chat with a friend. The latte was delicious as always and the sandwich was okay but what stood out the most was the lack of empathy and good service. When we ordered the girl did looked annoyed because we were looking at the menu still trying to decide what to get and there was no line behind us so i don't know why the attitude. Later there was a couple who had ordered a few things and they were dressed nicely like the my had plans after their coffee stop and somehow the girl dropped her coffee all over her and the baristas did not offer her a rag to clean up and just got a rag and cleaned up the coffee spill leaving the girl with huge stains in her beautiful outfit and to top it off the bathroom was out of order so she couldn't even clean up. I think I've found my favorite coffee shop that I'll be returning to each time I'm in San Diego. I love subtle hints of orange in my lattes so I was super excited to try the orange vanilla latte. It tastes just like the orange blossom latte from a cafe in Philly, KFar, which I LOVE. I found the orange vanilla flavor subtle (my friend said it's a little more "orangey" than one she likes at Bica). I also tried the Maui banana and again, banana flavor is subtle, not an in your face artificial banana flavoring. I didn't have enough time to really chill out but there's plenty of seating and wasn't crowded or loud the few times I went this past week. There's a bathroom, there's a small selection of pastries, and they sell some other packaged snacks as well. What more could you want? read more

Holsem: true to its name with a character filled coffee shop. I ordered the cortado and the wood's latte to taste a straight stick beverage and their more unique options. The wood's was interesting with the maple syrup and nutmeg paired with sea salt. I would've liked a little more sea salt. The cortado was solid (naturally, since it came from a La Marzocco). I would definitely go back to try another of signature lattes and a macchiato (the traditional kind) in person. I asked about their jar of little Dubai chocolates and how much they were, so she said I could take one for free; score. For coffee had their Nordic Blueberry maple iced latte and it was really tasty. Lots of great menu options too so something for everyone. I had an oddly negative experience the other morning at Holsem Coffee. I stopped in when it was empty (aside from one guest outside who had already been served) and waited at the register for a few minutes without any acknowledgment. During that time, the two employees behind the bar were having a conversation with repeated profanity, which felt a bit off-putting as a customer walking in. After I said "good morning," I was briefly acknowledged but not helped, so I politely finally asked if I could order a hot coffee to go. One of the baristas responded somewhat defensively, mentioning she was fixing another order and would have come back, which I understand--but the overall interaction still felt a bit dismissive. I also asked about purchasing a gift card and was told "we don't have any, no" from the back, which came across as abrupt. I'm a regular and genuinely like Holsem, so this felt pretty out of character compared to my usual experiences. I hope management trains its employees with a bit more courtesy and professionalism. read more

RATING SOLELY FOR GUEST EXPERIENCE Question...Is it part of your coffee shop not to say hi and have the cashier just stand there by the register (in silence) making it awkward, until we place an order? I've seen some trends in TikTok where places are intentionally rude, perhaps this is the vibe you are going for. I've had friends to whom I have recommended this place because the coffee is DELICIOSO, but they all have come back with the same feedback of how the client experience is not so welcoming. The worst coffee shop experience I've had. I came in for a pickup order and was completely ignored by the employees no acknowledgment, no greeting, nothing. On top of that, the barista had a terrible attitude and made the experience even worse. Customer service should be the bare minimum, and unfortunately, that was missing here. The new outdoor seating of Holsem really brightens the place and feels inviting. I love the natural wood table plus the olive green seats. When you walk into Holsem, it feels bright and modern. They have multiple seating choices and usually I don't have any problems asking someone from the bigger tables if I could sit with them. The menu is displayed on the right side of the wall as you walk in. It's more minimal than it used to be. Even my favorite, the strawberry malt latte, wasn't on there the day I went. But worry not, it will be coming back! They also have cold brew, specialty lattes, coffee, pastries, cookies, sandwiches, and tea! The worker greeted us upon walking in and was really nice. I ordered the Iced Orange Vanilla Latte (for here) with Whole Milk. Unlike at other coffee shops, the orange flavor in the latte didn't remind me of drinking orange extract. The flavor was subtle but went well with the latte. I would recommend this drink. I love the ice cubes they had, they were very clear and rectangular-- keeping the drink nice and cold. My friend ordered an espresso, for here. And a hot americano. The espresso didn't come with seltzer, but the ceramic cup it came in was beautiful. It had a nice grip and rim width. The espresso had a lush layer of crema on it. It smelled amazing, I could only imagine how it tasted. I'm usually not the one to order espresso, but seeing that-- made me want one for myself. After finishing the drinks we brought them inside and placed them in a black bin below the counter. Since I've been here before I knew where it was, but for my friend they didn't realize the bin was even there because it kind of blended into the backing of the counter. Overall, Holsem Coffee, is a wonderful place to come to in North Park. The parking spots are usually 1 hour limit in front. I love the specialty coffee choices and even the banana bread cold brew! They have great sandwiches if you're hungry and I'd even recommend snagging a cookie if they have them available. Swing by and try Holsem! read more

I got my family to stop here after an early morning graduation. I ordered the Vanilla Viena latte, and it was quite good! It's definitely not a traditional vanilla latte as the coffee is definitely on the strong side and the vanilla tasted not as strong, but not generically vanilla which is both good and simultaneously something I wasn't quite used to. But it was still yum. I think next time I would try a different latte though. read more
