OBSL - orange brown sugar latte
Komal B.

The Coffee Drop is hands down one of my absolute favorite coffee shops. Tucked in the cute Golden Hill neighborhood, it has such a cozy and charming vibe. It's run by the adorable couple Evan and Marissa, who started with a coffee truck and have clearly perfected their craft. One of their signature drinks, the OBSL (Orange Brown Sugar Latte), is iconic, all their flavors are homemade and every drink is vegan, made with oat milk. I love that their menu rotates every few minutes, which is such a cute and fun touch. The pastries are always tempting but tend to sell out fast, so arrive early if you want one. The space itself is small and cute, with some outdoor seating and WiFi, making it a perfect spot to hang out for a bit. Pro tip: get their punch card, you'll definitely want it if you're planning to come back (which you will). Overall, just an amazing spot with incredible drinks and a super welcoming vibe.

We stumbled across this coffee shop during our stay, and can I just say, how cute is this place? The best part of all was getting to meet and chat with the owners, who are also the baristas. They are incredibly friendly, kind, and truly make the experience that much more enjoyable. It's a small location, which adds to its charm and makes it feel unique and fun. I also really loved the attention to detail throughout the shop, you can tell a lot of thought went into it. While we were ordering, the owner shared a bit of the history behind the coffee shop, and I have to say, it's worth the visit for that alone. The coffee itself is excellent. I always start with an Americano to really taste the coffee beans, and this one did not disappoint, great flavor and balance. We will definitely be coming back and hope to continue supporting this business on our next visit.

Mexican mocha

The Coffee Drop is hands down my favorite coffee shop in San Diego. Their Mexican mocha is my absolute go-to--sweet, strong, and perfect every single time. And in the summer, nothing hits like their espresso tonic... so refreshing! Evan and Marissa, the owners, do such a beautiful job creating a space where everyone feels welcomed and seen. I've been coming here long enough that all the morning regulars know each other--it's that kind of community spot. The outdoor seating area is gorgeous too, whether you want to take a little break or get some work done in the fresh air. They also offer gluten-free pastries, and even though I'm not gluten-free, I still grab a concha every now and then because they're that good. Their most famous drink is the OBSL, and it definitely deserves the hype--super tasty! If you're in San Diego, I highly recommend stopping by. It's the kind of place you visit once and immediately understand why people keep coming back.

The Coffee Drop is such a special little shop and you can tell once you walk through the doors and get such a genuine sweet greeting from the owners, Marissa and Evan. They truly make you feel like you're part of this little community that comes together to appreciate their passionate small-business. They make a city as big as San Diego feel like you're in your local small town shop and I absolutely love it. I love how intimate the shop is with just a bench inside, some outdoor seating and the cutest little plants that give me inspo for my own plant collection every time I go. The shop makes espresso based drinks only and is completely dairy free with oat milk, almond milk or soy milk as options in your coffee along with little baked vegan treats that never fail to satisfy. My go-to here is the Orange Brown Sugar Latte, perfect light twist to your typical coffee. The brown sugar keeps it warm and savory while the hint of orange really brightens it with each sip. This coffee shop is my personal treat every once in a while and I love it every time.

Such a cute little coffee shop! It's located in Golden Hill near the 94, and has a small shared parking lot with a barber shop and food truck. The inside is very tiny and there's only outdoor seating available. The owners are also the baristas and they're so friendly and welcoming! They recommended the Orange Brown Sugar Latte, which my friend ordered and absolutely loved. I went with the classic iced vanilla latte with oat milk and loved mine, too! All of their drinks are made with milk alternatives at no extra charge, which is a huge plus. This is definitely a hidden gem that I'll be coming back to again and again!

This is my husband and I's absolute FAV coffee shop. Hands down! By now I think we have tried about everything on the menu! If there was more stars to give, we'd definitely give The Coffee Drop more stars! It's always great to come in and stay a little while to chat with the lovely and most welcoming owners. We have recommended this spot to all of our friends and family. Amazing coffee and great vibes every single time. We have been coming here every single week for over a year now! NO JOKE! & we still get excited and look forward to drinking an OBSL and Honey Cinnamon! Thank you for building such a great community!!

Small shop that serves up coffee with big flavor. Excellent service and very easy to get in and out of. Worth a visit when in the area. Give them a try and thank me later.

Really small shop owned by a couple, they were very nice and helpful! Enjoyed our coffee but it is dairy free. So only dairy alternative milk options

Super cute spot for a quick Coffee stop.

Super cute chill coffee spot. With outside lounging area. Great for a quick coffee run and or place to sip your coffee or tea. The Signature Orange Brown sugar latte is absolutely delicious and i will definitely come back here again.

Stopped by while visiting San Diego, but it was enough to make an impression. The owners are so kind and welcoming, you can tell they genuinely care about their shop and their customers. The Orange Brown Sugar Latte (OBSL) was amazing. I've already added this spot to my San Diego Yelp list and I'll definitely be back next time I'm in town.

In town for work and was in the area to check out some local coffee shop. This place is small and cozy, nice vibe and friendly staff. First customer of the day and walked in, greeted and explained their drinks to me. Tried out their signature Orange Brown Sugar Latte, not too sweet, with a hint of orange touch to the coffee which is nice. Will definitely try out their other drink again.

Really delicious coffee at The Coffee Drop! I'm so glad I got to try this spot as it will definitely be added to my SD coffee rotation. The shop itself is cozy, clean, and well decorated. The barista who owns the shop with his partner is really kind and personable, and he shared the story of the shop with me while he made the drink. The drink itself hit the spot on a hot sunny day. This is definitely some of the smoothest espresso I've ever had. The orange brown sugar was subtle, but had a great flavor profile against the espresso. I also love that they are a dairy free shop - this is the way! Will definitely be returning!

You know you've found a good spot when you stumble upon it while waiting for your car to get fixed--because let's be honest, nothing soothes the pain of an unexpected auto repair like a phenomenal cup of coffee. Enter The Coffee Drop, a cozy, welcoming little haven that made me forget all about the fact that my car was in the shop and my wallet was crying. First off, let's talk about Marissa, the owner and resident coffee magician. Not only is she super hospitable, but she also showed me their ridiculously cool sign that changes at the tap of a button-- basically, it's the Tesla of coffee shop signs. If you don't think that's cool, I don't know what to tell you. The ambiance? Spot on. Cozy, great decor, and--a clean bathroom. If you've ever had to play "coffee shop restroom roulette," you know this is a big deal. There's also plenty of outdoor seating with WiFi, so whether you're here to work, people-watch, or just sip your drink while pretending to be productive, you're covered. Now, the star of the show: the coffee. Marissa recommended their signature OBSL (Orange Brown Sugar Latte), and let me tell you, it was AMAZING. I got it hot, and it was like a warm hug from a caffeinated angel. The citrusy kick from the orange, the deep caramel notes from the brown sugar, and the rich espresso all came together like a symphony of deliciousness. If you don't try this, I question your life choices. So, do yourself a favor--skip the corporate coffee chains for a day and come support this local gem. You'll get fantastic coffee, a warm welcome, and if you're lucky, a live demonstration of their elite-level sign technology. What more could you want? 1000% recommend. Will be back--even if my car doesn't need fixing.

Artwork is very beautiful and fits the Barrio Logan scene perfectly. I arrived with nobody inside the business minus the workers, you had maybe 2 people outside enjoying the scenery and their drinks. Not greeted upon entering the business just gave me that stare with not asking if I had any questions. I dont recall his name but he was very skinny, curly hair or wavy and i believe he had braces, but not sure if he was having a bad day but something wasn't all there. I ordered 2 drinks, I forget the other but it had cinnamon on top. The drinks were just hand on the counter without saying which drinks is which, so i asked which one is which. Didn't hear me, so i kinda said again and he pointed them out not in a nice or rude way but the approach of how it was handled was not friendly. How can you have Mazapán without the Mazapán crumbles which are very iconic to the drink. I just found it super strange and did not care for it. The cinnamon based drink was good tho, which I'll give them that. Experience could have been better.

Wait outside on the sidewalk (no exterior seating) and someone will come to take you inside. Do not ring the door bell. The theme is to take it slow. Each customer typically waits 20-30 minutes to enter as part of how they do things, even if there is open seating inside. Not sure if they use a timer to space entries but it seems consistent. They take one group in at a time. Interior: A few tables around the wall and then bar seating. Would not recommend for parties greater than 2, there just isn't the space. They welcome service animals, babies/children and strollers from what I observed. The music was very, very loud. It was difficult to hold a conversation. I did not see a bathroom. Ordering process: After seating you wait for a little bit for them to bring small water cups and a QR menu with a table number and a set of rules. They do not have a physical menu, you must use your phone to order. Cell phone reception was dicey and took a long time to load. They have an interesting concept where you have a digital 'tab' open on their toast website. Unfortunately you must provide your full name, email and phone number. They have pour over drinks (note these can take 15-20 minutes), matcha, Hojicha and others. You may only order one drink per person at a time. They have a small snack menu with rotating foods. They use oat milk only. No substitutions allowed. After mobile ordering, drinks take 20-30 minutes as part of their take it slow vibe. Matcha $8 is from Paru tea and was very good. Hojicha $8 was too milky and didn't have a strong enough flavor. When you are done you walk to the register by the door and wait to be checked out. If they are making a drink you wait until they are finished. I wasn't really a fan. Staff were brusque. Music was too loud to converse.

The menu featured various matcha tea drinks which seems to be all the rage right now. The same seating arrangement of the bar countertop and tables across from it was available if you wanted to hang out and chill. A sign behind the bar described the ceremonial grade matcha that was used with the region of origin and the flavors imparted to the powder. Five different matcha drinks were offered along with hot and cold coffees and lattes. The top three matcha choices were priced at $8 each. I chose the Ordinary Pleasure which was the first one. Pandan sticky rice milk and mango puree were added to the matcha and topped with a salted coconut foam. I wasn't a fan of the foam, but the matcha flavor was intense and contrasted by the fruity puree on the bottom of the cup. The baristas were very focused with measuring the exact amounts for each ingredient in the drinks they were preparing. The matcha quality seemed to be very good based on what I tasted so maybe it's why the price was $1 higher than what I have tried elsewhere.

The drink was creamy and thick. Such a refreshing summer drink! The cafe itself is super cute and quaint with a trendy, boho chic vibe. Baristas were super friendly. I would come back again!

Sadly the ice cream shop was closed when I came back around 2pm. I found that to be odd, or perhaps it was open~ it was dark and doors were closed. But anyways, thankfully, Dark Horse Coffee Roasters was still open till I believe 3:30pm! (I went on a Sunday). They have indoor seating and a big space outdoor for seating. We found parking on the street, no paying needed. They also have a bathroom, which is nice, but most people don't ask for the key (since it's essentially open, only locked when in use). The door is frosted and you can see the outline of someone as they stand near it. I think it could be a little more frosty! There were a lot of workers the day I went and they were nice. The prices were good for specialty lattes and the guy informed us that both sizes use the same amount of shots (2), the only difference is quantity of milk! I got a classic, $6, 12 oz Iced Salted Maple (S'Maple) Latte. It was good, but I wouldn't mind if the salted maple was more flavorful. It's quite subtle! The outdoor space is really great for meet ups with large groups of family/friends/work. I think this location is really lovely and would recommend people to come check it out!

Food: 5/5 Drinks: 4/5…read moreService: 5/5 Atmosphere: 5/5 I love the Dark Horse brand across the board, but the Golden Hill location has consistently been my favorite. The baristas are kind and efficient, and they remember my dogs which of course wins me over instantly. The location itself is super convenient: easily walkable, a fair amount of street parking, and easy access right off the highway. I also really appreciate that they have lots of outdoor seating and offer pup cups, so I feel comfortable stopping by with my dogs. I also love that they have a rewards program via Cash App/phone number/the credit card you use. It's especially convenient that this is all tracked digitally and automatically when you swipe your credit card. For drinks, I've ordered: The Champ (iced): 4/5 A very popular choice. I do enjoy this coffee and the honey flavor is lovely, but the cinnamon can be a bit strong for me. They use powdered cinnamon over the top, which from a texture standpoint isn't my favorite. I do find the cinnamon is less overpowering when this drink is ordered hot instead of iced. Salted Maple Latte (iced): 5/5 This is my go-to. Delicious, strong coffee without being bitter and very well balanced overall. The maple flavor doesn't jump out in an obvious way, but adds a subtle sweetness that isn't overly sweet or sharp. Interestingly, I think the 16oz is better balanced than the 12oz in terms of coffee/milk/maple ratios. Pumpkin Spiced Latte (hot): 3/5 I'm not the biggest pumpkin spice latte fan, so I wasn't expecting to love this. It does have a clear pumpkin spice flavor, but the texture coats the mouth a bit more than I prefer (likely from the pumpkin), which is part of why this isn't my favorite. For food, I've ordered: Vegan Donuts: 5/5 I thought these used to be made by a sister company of Dark Horse, but I believe they're now sourced from Nomad Donuts. They usually have 1-2 rotating flavors each day, and since the main difference is the glaze on top, you really can't go wrong with any flavor you get. The texture is closer to a cake donut. Super tasty and not too sweet. Almond Cake: 5/5 Delicious and decadent. Very light, sweet, and crumbly. This isn't something I'd get regularly since it's just a bit too sweet for me without feeling like dessert, but it's undeniably tasty. To summarize, this is a consistently solid location with great service, excellent drinks, and small bites that pair perfectly with your favorite cup of joe. This is my go-to neighborhood coffee stop.
