I first tried Holy Basil by ordering their egg rolls for delivery on DoorDash and they were SO good that I had to place a pickup order just to see the restaurant in person. Turns out it's tucked inside a hidden little food hall in DTLA, with plenty of table seating. Such a cool, lowkey spot. I'm a big lover of egg rolls and lumpia, and when I tell you these egg rolls are next level... they're unique, insanely crispy, super flavorful, and LONG (like, laughably long lol). They're filled with pork and come with a delicious Mae Ploy sauce that complements them perfectly. Super tasty and officially my new favorite egg rolls right now. initially thought $10.50 for three was a bit pricey, but after seeing the size and tasting them, they're 100% worth it. I crave them anytime I'm in the area. I also love the packaging and overall aesthetic, and I'm definitely coming back to try more of the menu (Pad Thai is next). The employee who handed me my meal was polite and acknowledged me right away when I arrived to pick up. Highly recommend checking them out.

Heard so many things about this place from peers! So excited I ran into this Thai shop. I love the decor and the seating all the small details like their pink plates Love that you can see inside the kitchen especially when they making your food. Food came delivered to our table piping hot! I've never had drunken noodles before I like that they have two different types of noodles you can choose from. Definitely has a kick of spice I was sweating up! Really glad I got to try! gotta come back to eat the whole menu

Just had my first meal at Holy Basil and everything was absolutely delicious. Every dish hit the mark and I honestly can't wait to go back for more. The manager, Aron, was great too... friendly, attentive, and made the whole experience even better. If you're in the neighborhood, this place is a must. Ambience is really nice clean welcoming. I love the holy basil light. It's a really cool vibe on the inside like an outdoor market at night.!

I'm glad I got to try Holy Basil! A little hard to find, as it was located in a food court-esk place in the fashion district (?) there were shops on shops selling suits for a great price on the same street. Had to order my go-to: pad see ew. Service was great, very friendly! They have a few tables designated for their restaurant but other seating around as well. The pad see ew was very good, just enough flavor of salty/sweet. They give you a good amount. I can say that out of all pad see ew I've tried, this one is most comparable to Hanuman Thai in OC (my favorite...). I chose pork loin in mine out of shrimp and tofu. It was flavorful and tender, I normally don't like pork that much but it blended nicely with the noodles. If it is in your interest to visit, please do! The quality of food and flavor definitely lives up to the hype :)

Good Thai food in LA with moderate menu pricing. Located in a small food hall competing with a Pizza Hut and Broken Mouth (renowned Hawaiian fusion), it holds its own. The Pad Kee Mao was nothing crazy with a $4 up charge for 3 pieces of shrimp. The Green Curry and Grandmas Fish and Rice are what you should get from here. Service was friendly and attentive with everything we needed. I'd say it's worth a try if you're in the area and Broken Mouth is too long of a wait.

This place has a fun vibe, very small but surprisingly echoey when you first get in there. We did not have reservations one bri arrived but we are lucky that it was only a 10 minute wait. I think we got some of the best spots in the place though, at the bar, so we can see where all the magic happens. However like I mentioned earlier it is so noisy in there! The venue is pretty small and because the room shape is relatively boxy with hard walls and with the kitchen up in the action makes for a relatively loud ambient noise space. I think the place has enough charm and various sounds going on to justify probably not having music, but I'm pretty sure there is something playing that was echoing in the place, but couldn't tell you what it was. Anyways enough on that. The food really does have a very eclectic approach, I think drawing together Thai in Mexican influence, at least based on my taste. The rice dish was a little bit plain but very fresh and well executed based on the ingredients contained within. The chicken dish was enjoyable it was a fried chicken as it's protein which had a subtle crunch yet perfectly cooked and delicate on the chew. The sauce was an unmistakable mole type sauce flavor And while good as a combination I thought it lacked a little bit of depth in the flavor. The wagyu steak dish had great flavors textures and overall good combination but boy does it kick you in the butt on the spice level. I would not order that last one again unless there's a way to adjust the spice level. We weren't asked about spice level so I'm not sure if that's something that typically comes up or if it's a common concern for guests. The last dish we had was the key lime pie which to me was the star of the show. It is homemade and I probably could eat two more slices of that in one sitting. I would definitely come back, but I would certainly choose different entree options to get a better feel for the restaurant. And I'll probably order that key lime pie again, so good!

My gf loves thai food and I recently found time to get an order in after work. We got the pad kee mao, gra pow eggplant, and chicken and rice. I waited about 30 minutes for my order to be ready even after ordering for a specific time pickup. The pad kee mao was my favorite of the 3. The noodles were chewy and springy and I loved the strong taste of the sauce they used. The generous amount of veggies and soft chicken meat was tasty too. I usually don't like eggplant, but the gra pow eggplant was delicious. I loved how soft and almost mushy the eggplant was along with a light eggplant taste. The addition of the mushier and crunchy skin pumpkin went well. I didn't expect there to be rice included since that was not mentioned on the menu. That was a big plus. The chicken and rice dish was also better than what I was expecting. I'm a big fan of hainan chicken rice and this was both similar but very different. The chicken was the same style and soft. The nice crunchiness of the bits of garlic and cucumber gave some refreshing taste of the stronger taste of ginger. The rice also had a garlic ginger taste to it too. Overall, I would put this spot as my favorite thai spot in DTLA area. The food was great and my gf also really liked it too. I will be ordering other things on the menu when I get a chance to try them out again.

I used to order once a month AND dream of the pad see ew at this place. And now I feel like the brand has got a little too big for its birches. I think the food has been holding up a bit but its service continues to be really over the top stuck up that I'm uncomfortable when I try to bring my friends to try it. There's been too many incidents and I don't think it's worth submitting my friends/fam to this. And I think the last draw was ordering delivery for the famous pad see ew only to get this stringy version that we absolutely disliked. Ps- note I forget the green curry here is super delicious but more watery than most.

I love a good eggroll, someone here said that these where their favorite. What kind of crack are you smoking? Hands down the sorries eggroll ive ever eaten. All you taste is the wrapping, and they are 10 dollars!! Truly criminal eggrolls to the point i felt compelled to make this review. The main dishes are decent but over priced for the portions.

Today, I decided to go in person and order. I ordered 2 veggie fried rice and 1 pad Thai. I was charged $54 for those 3 orders. I knew the price was off but since I was treating a friend that came with me I didn't want to question the price in front of them. I even tipped an extra $2. I've ordered every 2-3 weeks recently and sometimes the same type of order via delivery and it isn't this much. It's always like $44...plus tip. I went home and put in the same order on Uber eats and lo and behold it came up to $44. I don't know why I was charged an extra $10. I think he assumed I wasn't a regular. Seems very dishonest. I'm very disappointed. Updated: with taxes it's supposed to be $48. As per Uber eats pickup.

Unacceptable $26.40 for not even 1/2 a teaspoon depth of curry sauce. Called the restaurant back and the woman's response was " it's not soup. You can contact owner or go to our web site. " What's the point of curry when there isn't enough sauce to put on rice. ‍ The issue isn't the portion of shrimp. The issue was the lack of sauce to put on the rice. Picture shows the depth of sauce with a plastic soon.

Fantastic Thai spot with excellent service. Had the pad khee mao, calamari, green curry risotto, and chimichurri steak. Everything was delicious. Small venue so recommend a reservation. Would definitely come back again.

Have been eating here for the past couple years. Always the pad kee mao, always tastes great. However over the past several months the amount of "moo krob" -the crispy pork- has gotten smaller and smaller. Overall prices have increased like everywhere but you now must order extra veggies and extra moo krob just to get the same amount of food as before which is a bit disingenuous. So overall this place has gotten SO much more expensive. Great taste, but will eat here way less often now because of pricing read more

I have really been looking forward to trying this spot, and it was worth all my hype! I practically inhaled my meal. It was all amazing. I will say coming here after walking around downtown on a really hot day wasn't the best idea considering everything is served hot and spicy, but I had my stomach set on this. I had the tom yum goong soup, pad see ew, and the gra paw neuh. I feel like the soup always stands out at any good Thai restaurant, at least for me. Their tom yum was so flavorful, I only wish there was a bit more mushroom to enjoy the broth with. My second favorite dish was the pad see ew, but that is not to say the gra paw neuh wasn't delicious, because it was all bomb. Bomb bomb bomb. The place is super casual. It's in a small food hall, which seemed mostly vacant but for a Pizza Hut. There's a walk-up window where you order your food and communal seating as well as smaller tables. The small round tables rock like no other though, so we took our food outside around the back of the building where there are more tables. There is also a little market back there, which is convenient as Holy Basil does not sell water. read more

I'm not a cool world traveler or anything but gosh darn this food was great! It's as close to getting a home-cooked meal as one can find from takeout! I tried the green bone-in chicken curry and the Kanah Moo Krob. Both rocked my socks off! The next night I ordered Tom Yum Goong and Egg rolls just cause I could. Will be a habitual customer. My friend and I ordered from here for an outdoor socially-distanced picnic. She placed the order and picked it up, and said it was very convenient and easy, they come to your car to give you the order. Everything was well-packed, no spills, yay! We got: Pad See Ew, Pork Belly Rice Bowl, wings, egg rolls, and broccoli and long bean sides. The star of this meal was the wings -- how did they pack so much flavor into the wing??? It's spicy, sweet, hot, and gingery, and it comes with a papaya pickle. Do yourself a favor and add these to your order! The Pad See Ew was great -- wish it came with a beef option because that's my favorite meat on it. The Pork Belly Rice Bowl -- that red rice was awesome, the pork belly had some chewy layer, like cartilage or tendon, I had to spit out a little strip with each bite. If you get this bowl, then don't order the long bean side dish, as the bowl has plenty of them (they're great). The broccoli and long beans were perfectly prepared, and a great addition to go with the noodle dish. The one lackluster part of the meal was the egg roll -- skip these and order the wings instead. read more

Ordered shrimp pad Thai. Don't think they washed the wok or pan thoroughly in between cooking resulting in the bitter burnt leftovers covering the new dish they are making - which is the pad Thai - tastes burnt and bitter. Shrimp is alright, nothing mind blowing, you really need to eat it with the skin to get the seasoned taste. Also had the tofu eggplant dish, decent. Overall, I won't recommend driving here just for this place read more

Overall, to sum up all my reviews, this is a place that in the past, I had a few really good dishes at and was really excited about it. They then stopped serving one of them, then they stopped making a "mild" option and their medium spicy was inconsistent and sometimes too spicy to eat. I still had two dishes I really liked but then last week they were "out of stock" of a sauce I liked for one of them (no worries, wasnt a big deal) but this week they are "out of stock" of their main noodle dishes. I often find things "out of stock" or no longer on the menu. So all of the main dishes I would get are gone and the menu is already so small. I tried calling the last two weeks also and no one ever answers. Unfortunately what was once some place that I was so excited about, consistently is disappointing with a very slim menu, main items out of stock, inconsistent spicy levels, and not able to get through to ever speak to someone read more

I crave their egg rolls now. Super flaky and crispy but soft and savory on the inside. I'm normally not a huge fan of egg rolls but these were bomb. I was sad they only came in fours. Their drunken noodles had a really yummy pork and noodle seasoning. Not salty at all and a very small kick of spice not overwhelming at all. The only thing was the meet had some hard chew at the end that took longer but everything else was perfect. read more

Pad Ke Mao is my go-to. But everything is great too. Possibly the best Thai in L.A. No soy sauce there but really you don't need ot, but I'd still bring my own if I was going to order the Pad Thai again. They need to stop it with the scan code internet ordering. Just take my order in person. read more

Not only was the food horrendous and tasted like rubber . The Asian lady working the counter has MAJOR attitude . Why are you in such a bad mood lady ???? Please go take a vacation your scaring everyone . Even the cooks looked depressed . placed a scheduled order in the morning at around 10 Am for me to pick up and for it to be ready at 11:30 . I arrived at 11:39 They told me they got the order 5 mins ago told me to wait 30 mins . I patiently waited . After 30 mins I came back asked what the status was and simply asked for the eta so I can determine whether to move my car. She gave me this attitude " 2 dishes " How long does 2 dishes take ? The service is always great, nothing against the employees but I am so underwhelmed every time. I live in the building upstairs and have given many chances. I've tried the pad see ew, pad kee mao, and the new wings and every dish is lacking flavor. They are always busy and show up on every LA top food list, but I just don't get it. I do like the oat milk Thai tea but would recommend anywhere else that has more flavor. read more

I was so underwhelmed after the first try, I thought, all these great reviews, I really should try this place again. It's the worst Thai food I've had anywhere. Green curry had no coconut milk and was missing all of the complex flavors associated with Thai curries. Not any curry taste either. Basically like a bowl of watery basil soup with a few pieces of chicken and Thai eggplants. read more

First of all, do yourself a favor and get the Pad Kee Mao w/ Crispy Pork Belly and Vegan Krapow (EVEN if you're not Vegan) Absolute best Thai food in DTLA. Period. It is rare to find a spot crafts flavors beyond the "I'm craving Thai food, let's just order from a restaurant that's open" type of foods. Eating Holy Basil's food is a flavor burst experience each and every time. There are NO misses in any dish. I highly recommend working your way through the whole menu like i have, I'm sure you'll find some new favorite dishes as you work your way through Thailand in each bite at this small LA shop. 5/5 read more

This place is a good alternative/break from the usual Thai town restaurants. It's different in comparison in the fact that it's more of a modern take on Thai food yet still holding its traditional Thai values. I tried 3 dishes during the covid environment: the pad Thai, green curry, and drunken noodles. The pad Thai was okay, but the highlight of the dish was the large pieces of shrimp it came with. The green curry was amazing. Definitely a stand out and I'd say better than the more traditional Thai places. The drunken noodles was special in the sense that you could customize the spice level. I got the most spicy, which was spicy but not overwhelming. This is a dish that was delicious and better than the usual places. Overall I thought this places was great. If you want the more traditional pad Thai then I'd say your better off going to the traditional places in Thai town. But, if you're interested in other Thai dishes, then this restaurant is a great choice. The chili powder is spicy and on point and better than places like Sanamluang and Ruen Pair. HOLY AMAZING. This definitely is competing to be the top Thai food in LA in my opinion. We ordered the egg rolls which came with 4 for $6 (good and would get again, but nothing special). We also got the drunken noodles with pork and wow o wow. It was soooo tasty! The pork was crispy and delicious! We also got the Tom Ka soup and wooooow. Best soup ever! Loved all the flavors! The chinese broccoli with rice was also awesome! Highly highly recommend this place! I will be making this a staple :) Also shout out to the very friendly workers :) read more

My biggest problem with most Asian food is that it's usually pretty greasy. That's not a problem here. This is both modern and yet holds home-cooked feeling and taste. The egg rolls were perfect, nice and crisp. The Green Curry had so much flavor and the chicken was tender and delicious. The chicken wings can be considered a bit oily but I didn't mind. It is fried but they packed a lot of flavor as well. Worth the price for authentic modern Thai food. read more

Delicious tasting thai street food in Santee Passage. We want to diversify and order other menu items, but we can't stop getting the Pad See Ew, the Gra Pow Neuh, and the egg rolls. The Tom Yum Goong (soup) is realllly good, best eaten hot. As it cooled down it got saltier, and the soup is packed with a ton of ingredients, I wish there was more broth! Ordering from their website would be the same cost to them as ordering directly in person, in case you're trying to support local restaurants to the max. Would definitely come back anytime I want thai food (which is often). The restaurant owners are eventually going to open up Happiness Capsule on the other side of Santee Passage, which is all their delicious drinks. Look. Go to Luv 2 Eat and be happy. Or you can go here which is OK...the woman working the window just seems always pissed off. She didn t want to give us the Yelp check in offer. This is my new favorite Thai spot in downtown. The tum yum goong is the best I've ever had! I love that they keep the shrimp heads on. We ordered medium spicy and it's a good level of spice (and I can handle a decent amount of spice). We ordered garlic green beans, eggplant and pumpkin rice bowl, pad Thai, egg rolls, and the soup. Eventually, we discovered a lot behind the building offering 8-hour parking for $10, which we opted for due to the lack of alternatives. The packaging arrived completely soaked and falling apart -- the container was crushed, everything leaked out, and the food was absolutely inedible. I couldn't eat any of it. It's clear that no care was taken in packing the food properly. It was a total waste of money, and I was left hungry and frustrated. I ordered their pad Thai, the wings, a side of their green beans and the Gra Pow Moo Krob bowl. WOW. started off the wings, which are SPICY but in an incredible, am i crying with joy, kind of way. Pad Thai is excellent -- not too sweet. My boyfriend said, in between bites that he begrudgingly shared, that the Gra Pow Moo Krob was "the bowl of the year." Run, don't walk, to this place. The waitress was incredibly slow and detached. We waited forever, and she never bothered to inform us that our order was ready; she just walked past us, leaving us to guess. What a way to make guests feel unwelcome. They really need to step up their game. If more people complain, Holy Basil might lose its "it" status. To top it off, we never even got water.
