Ordered takeout after hearing a lot of buzz about the place. There were some highlights but overall I just don't think the style/flavor combo is my style (i.e., smokey/blackened). I wish there were more protein ingredients for some of the dishes. What I can appreciate about this place is that they use high quality ingredients. We ordered the tom yum goong, pad see ew, pad Thai goong, Thai fried rice, and a side of wild rice. My favorite was the pad see ew - solid. The Thai fried rice was pretty good too. Pad Thai was ok. Tom yum had a very strong flavor of lemongrass that some would enjoy. It was a little overwhelming for me. The side of rice was at most half filled and for $3 i would think we would get a little more. I can see why some rave about the place. Maybe we didn't order the right things. This my first time at this location and I can say the staff is friendly the food is good. The service is fast and the menu is limited to just a few plates. The reason that I did not give them a five star rating is the portions are smaller than anticipated, the pricing is good if they offered slightly bigger portions. Food is amazing - reminds me of my travels in Thailand. On weekends, they have really interesting seafood specials too. Holy Basil just hits the spot every time. To the crunchy moo krob, the house-made curries, well-curated wine selection - everything is fantastic. Food is delicious and fresh so 4.5/5 there. But everything else is a caricature of the current state of dining. First you have to order through an app (after scanning a QR code...what if you don't have a phone?). I guess Covid killed the need for humans. Then you can't pay with cash and have to pay a credit card fee. If you don't leave me the option then don't charge me for using my card or build in the cost in the food. Last but probably the most annoying is the tipping logic. The app defaults to 25%...Isn't tipping for service?! If yes then why am I tipping a robot? The whole thing is more annoying and longer for the costumer. I feel I should be getting a discount. I was finally in DTLA for a flower workshop, and saw that Holy Basil was only a few minutes away. I was hoping that the hype at this place was well deserved, and luckily, it delivered! Ordering is done online (order ahead of you can for curbside pickup). This spot is located inside a small dining food hall with seating but parking is a bit tough since it's mainly street. Since I came an hour before closing + weekday, it was relatively easy. I imagine on a regular weekend or so, it might be a bit tough looping the block for parking (especially since DTLA can be a bit sketch). I went with the Tom yum goong & the pad thai and the shrimp for both dishes were huge! I also liked that they left the head on the shrimp, which makes for amazing flavor. The Tom yum is SO SO good. It's super flavorful, a bit creamy, and brings me back to Thailand! It's def not like other Tom yum in LA, and hands down my favorite that I've tried here. The pad thai was also good, but in a different way. It's not the saucier style like one you'd find at Ruen Pair or thai town spots. It's feels a bit more charred (?) in my opinion, which makes it unique. The service was also super good. I was so excited to try holy basil. I've heard nothing but great things. However, I was beyond disappointed. I order food for a dinner party and set the time until 7:45 for pick up. My girlfriend went to go pick up, and they completely forgot my order and instead of admitting that, they rushed the order and she was finally able to get the food at 8:05. The food was sub par to say the least. It looked rushed, most of the meat was very fatty, it actually made me lose my appetite. Based on reviews, my experience seems rare, and I hope that's the case. The food truck and pop up food scene has truly taken a dive (even before pandemic). Unfortunately, Holy Basil is no different. High priced, mediocre food. I ordered their signature fried pork belly. I'll start with the good: The wait was relatively short. Probably 10 minutes to order and get my food. The sauce was top notch. Vinegar, chilies, fish sauce, and a little sugar. The bad: $15 with tip for about 4oz of previously fried pork belly. Fried foods should be served hot and fresh. This was room temperature and starting to go stale. There was presumably no seasoning on the pork belly. Just because the sauce is flavorful doesn't mean you don't season the meat. This isn't sashimi. Novelty isn't enough to make poor food worth the high prices. Get your QC up or expect more negative reviews. read more

First of all, the guy at the register said there's eight in each serving and there was not mine had 7 and my partner's had 5 which there is so much inconsistency there. The price tag was the most I have ever paid for lunch time Thai at $17.50. I was in a really dodgy part of DTLA. Found a meter luckily and it had 22 minutes on it even... I put in a quarter and it didn't even look like the minutes changed at all... put in 2,3,4 more and I only got 12 minutes for my $1 WOW.... $6 an hour meter... I usually order a curry or the pad kee mao; this time I wanted something without the spice, so I ordered pad see ew. I chose the rice vermicelli noodles recommended in the menu. Sad to say, this was the one time I was disappointed; the noodles were stuck together rather than mixed with the vegetables, there was hardly any egg in the mix, and it was just too salty. Not sure why they would recommend the thin noodles -- in Thai Town and in Bangkok, I've usually seen the flat noodles. So I recommend ordering the spicy food. read more

I ordered a side of long beans and the Kang Kew Waan Kai (chicken green curry). The green curry was perfection; warm and soothing to my soul that cold evening. The chicken was perfectly tender and I loved that the curry was served with purple rice. The green beans (though not very long...) were tasty as well. The remainder of the garlic, soy sauce was so good with the leftover rice. I stole some bites of my roommates sai aou which was also delicious. Their dishes looked and smelled incredibly fragrant. However over the past several months the amount of "moo krob" -the crispy pork- has gotten smaller and smaller. Overall prices have increased like everywhere but you now must order extra veggies and extra moo krob just to get the same amount of food as before which is a bit disingenuous.
