i was super excited about this place as i was walking in. its in a cute plaza in silverlake and has an outdoor dining area. parking is a bit hard but we did find a spot in the neighborhoods down the block. the staff told me that the dishes were inspired by northern mongolian cuisine, and a lot of the dishes are fusion but it was their own take with Mongolian styles. boba milk tea 5/5: this was actually one of my favorite things. the tea flavor was strong and the sweetness was so perfect handmade braised noodle 5/5: my favorite meal of them all. this dish tasted like a home cooked meal and the meat was super flavorful. the portions are big and good to share! popcorn chicken 4/5: tasted like a regular dish. the sauce was overpowering so i preferred it by itself. oil splash noodles: 4.5/5: i love the wide flat noodles they use in here. its appreciated the slight kick of spiciness for flavor pork xiaolongbao - 3/5: not as much soup as i would have liked dumplings - shrimp & zucchini shaomai, beef shaomai, and chicken mushroom shaomai, 2/5: even though this place has dumplings in their title, i actually preferred the other dishes more. the shaomai dough is flower-y shaped on top, and i felt that the dough was too much and overpowered the meat. braised pork rice bowl 4/5: it was worth a try. i love this dish in general and packed it for lunch the next day. mapotofu rice bowl 3.5/5: decent dish that i also ate as leftovers! overall this is a solid spot that i'd come back to for its home-y comfort meal vibes. we came around 7:40 ish and they said the kitchen closed at 7:50, so definitely come earlier if you come here since the spot closes at 8:30. read more

my friend and i came here about an hour before closing, and when we arrived, we were told that we would have to order and eat quickly since we came in late. so if you're planning to visit, i'd definitely recommend coming a little earlier. we ordered a ton of food from the menu: popcorn chicken, pork xiao long bao, shrimp zucchini shaomai, beef shaomai, chicken mushroom shaomai, garlic green beans, braised noodles, hand-pulled noodles, mapo tofu rice bowl, braised beef rice bowl, and boba milk tea. we started with the boba milk tea and noodle dishes, and they were all so delicious. the milk tea had a really strong tea flavor, which i personally prefer. the braised noodles were probably one of my favorite dishes because they had that comforting, home-cooked flavor to them. the hand-pulled noodles were also really flavorful without being too spicy. after trying these first, we had pretty high expectations for the rest of the meal. unfortunately, most of the other dishes were pretty lackluster. despite this being a dumpling-focused restaurant, we didn't really love any of the xiao long bao or shaomai. the shaomai had this flower-shaped piece of dough coming out of the top that had an almost paper-like texture. i know it's supposed to be one of their unique touches, but honestly, neither of us liked it. i didn't feel like it added anything to the dumplings and, if anything, took away from the overall texture and flavor. the fillings themselves also weren't very memorable, and some of the dumplings felt surprisingly dry, especially considering they were supposed to be soup dumplings. the rice bowls weren't really for me either. i had never tried mapo tofu before, so i didn't have much to compare it to, but my friend, who's a fan of the dish, said it tasted weird compared to what she's used to. the braised beef rice bowl also had a texture that i didn't really enjoy. the beef was almost slimy to me, and overall, it wasn't very flavorful. apart from the food, the service also wasn't great. i completely understand that we came in close to closing time, but our server made us feel pretty rushed throughout the meal. he brought us to-go boxes and reminded us to eat quickly since they were closing, even though there were still other customers dining inside. there was actually another table still sitting there when we left, which made the whole experience feel a little uncomfortable. read more

I'd been curious about Xibei since it opened, and I finally tried it for a weekend dinner. I noticed that there were several pickups for orders to go, and I was one of the few people dining on site. Because it was not very busy, finding an open table was easy; I also appreciated how one of the employees asked if I had any menu-related questions. I ordered the scallion pancake and the xiao long bao, and I thought it was a solid meal. The pancake's crispy texture was impressive, and the dumplings had a good amount of filling inside of their tender skins. Probably the best dumplings/ steamed shao mais in this area if you venture out of the 626. Honestly I was hesitant but so intrigued... keep an open mind and their dumplings will knock your socks off. To get here, street parking will be your best bet and there is a lot of it throughout the area. This is a more fast casual spot with about 5-6 tables for seating inside and a 3-4 additional tables in their patio. For their menu, they have a nice selection of different shaomais to choose from along with some main dishes and appetizers. I stopped by for some lunch with the Phamily and we got a spread of the Angus-Beef Shaomai, Lamb Shaomai, Shrimp & Zucchini Shaomai, Chinese Pork Burger, Popcorn Chicken, Scallion Pancake, Wood-ear Mushroom Salad, and the Cucumber Salad. Everything was flavorful with authentic and comforting flavors. My personal faves were the Angus-Beef Shaomai and the Chinese Pork Burger. Overall, I am glad I got to check this spot out. I have been dying to try Xibei Dumplings for the longest time I remember, and it finally happened! My friend and I wanted to grab something light before we headed out to a bar to drink, and both of us live in Silverlake, so my friend recommended Xibei, and I am so glad he did. Popcorn chicken is something I always crave, and Xibei has it. But I always ended up getting it from somewhere else. Unfortunately I didn't get to try it this time, but in the near future I definitely will! We tried Cold Oat Noodle with Veggies and Shrimp & Zucchini Shaomai. First things first, the presentation of Shaomai was so pretty. The skin was very thin, so you could see what's inside, and it was so paper-thin that it was pleasant to look at! The noodles was surprisingly really refreshing and satisfying as well. A generous portion of colorful fresh veggies and the noodles that look very similar to soba were very interesting texture-wise. It was chewy but still picked up all the dressing/sauce. Service was good; very attentive. I think they have more delivery and takeout orders than dine-in customers, so I felt like we got better customer service. They do have a private lot for parking right next to the plaza, so that is always a plus, especially in Silverlake. Usually full, but there is street parking available, though it could be a bit challenging. Nonetheless, I would definitely come back to try their popcorn chicken. read more

You can watch each one crafted by hand in their open kitchen. Their menu is small but focused. The shrimp & zucchini shaomai is their most popular filling, and you can even get any of them pan-fried! And they recently added OAT noodles to their menu, which are handmade and hand-torn, and a healthy alternative to regular noodles. You have to try this Chinese version of pasta with the tomato eggplant sauce. And you've gotta go for their crystal cold noodles, orange chicken rice bowl, and Chinese pork sandwich--all hits. Wow the food is pretty good here. The dumplings wrappers are very thin with a good amount of filling. The staff is very friendly and service was quick. The space is very clean and I like how its a little tucked away from the main street. I love that they steam their dumplings in bamboo. It definitely adds to the aroma and experience. My only pet peeve is ... I hate eating dumplings with to-go paper plates and plastic utensils. It takes away from the dining experience. I get that they're going for a more casual feel being counter service and all but I much more enjoy dumplings at a sit down with actual soy sauce bottles (not individual packets). Parking gods at it again. I pulled up to a metered street parking with 42 minutes still remaining so free parking for me. There is a parking lot next door not sure if its paid. There was not alot of ppl around 7pm but then it started to get busy right after i ordered and got my food. Place is good for groups. Food was amazing! Order: beef dumpling and veggie dumpling. I say dumpling because they were pretty big compared to the regular shaomai. They are Juicy and lots of filling. I got the 3 for $7 to try two different types. In one word, gross. Our server was probably the owner and a very sweet man. Loves dogs and loves talking to his guests. It's a cute little cafe with a handful of outdoor tables so you can bring a dog. However, the menu is limited and everything came out cold. Dan Dan noodles, cold (on purpose). Mushroom dumplings and mushroom chicken dumplings cold and boring. The tomato beef dish was cold and unfortunately disgusting. The beef itself was fat held together with strands of beef. There were no chicken dishes other than in the dumplings so if you want something a bit more, it was those squishy pieces of meat or nothing. When I brought the quality of beef to the attention of our server, all he said was "it's rib meat" and didn't even try to take it back or offer something else in exchange. The three little pieces of steamed broccoli on the side we're also cold and I didn't feel like eating just plain rice in a tomato sauce that reminded me of chef boyardee. When the bill came it was $66 for two orders of dumplings, noodles and an inedible dish. Nope. No need to return. read more

A new dumplings restaurant in Silver Lake. This place has inner Mongolian style food and it's very different from most southern Chinese dumplings in both the wrapping and the fillings. The XLB with any fillings was really good. The beef rice was really good. The beef was so tender I felt like it was cooked for a long time. Everything I tried was very good.
