I love going to the Pavilion Café. This place just oozes class. I mean, I'm surprised they let me eat there! But they do, and I'm glad. The setting is absolutly perfect. The food and the service live up to the setting. The price is set accordingly. In other words, eating here makes you feel like a million bucks, and paying the bill feels like paying a million bucks. However, if you stretch lunch at the Pavilion Café into a leisurely visit with good friends and/or your special someone, you'll like feel like you got a deal when the check comes. I have heard many great things about Pavilion Cafe and have been wanting to try it for over a year. I finally went for a good-bye lunch (for me) and was so excited to finally try it! I ordered the lemonade with ginger and was surprised to taste a very sour lemonade minus any ginger flavor. I ordered the Piadina (italian grilled flatbread with arugula, chopped tomatoes, cucumbers, basil, garlic, fresh mozzarella and prosciutto). Sounded yummy and the picture I took made it look amazaing, however, that is where the amazement ended. It tasted like a plain salad with no dressing that I had to chop up with a fork. I love prosciutto and had trouble locating mine! Even when I found a piece here and there, I found it to be lacking flavor. My co-workers also had the same thing to say about thier other dishes. Whew! Glad I wasn't the only one. We all agreed the food was way overpriced and we would never go back! read more

This little cafe tucked away inside the Museum is a must try. The staff is always courteous and friendly and the food is just wonderful. My go to options are the Chicken Sandwich with Bacon & Avocado or the ono Turkey sandwich (they roast in house and it is so ono), Curried turkey salad etc. I am getting hungry writing about it. Simple but quality ingredients! They have desserts from scratch too!! ~If you like cookies, after your meal, check out the bookstore and then cut through to the other side. I've been attending and a member of the Honolulu Museum of Art for a while now and did not have a chance to try the Pavilion Cafe until lately. I noticed the restaurant the first time I toured the museum; it's all open-air with a high glass skylight ceiling. You feel like you're outside but never have to worry about rain or overbearing sunshine. I tried the cafe following the Shangri-la tour, which was the perfect idea. The day I went it was pouring in a refreshing way; I loved having a few of the courtyard and fountain with a steady stream of rain. The wood tables and chairs were nice and distinct. We tried both the specials of the day: a dill salmon and salad with steak. Both were quite delicious, healthy, and atypical fares for Hawaii. They were expensive for the portion size, but were plated beautifully. The salmon desperately required seasoning and salt, but was excellent after. The plantation iced tea was as pretty as it was refreshing. They have very limited hours- breakfast/brunch/lunch, so plan accordingly. Having reservations is also recommended. The hostess and waiter were also both formal and professional. I would go back and recommend eating here as part of your visit to the museum. read more

A hidden gem within the Honolulu Museum of Art. I have been here several times for lunch and it has always been excellent. The service is good and the atmosphere and food are fantastic. A great open air cafe with a lovely view of the museum courtyard. The setting is casual but elegant. The cuisine is familiar but upscale. Soups, sandwiches, and pastas that are hearty, fresh, and refined. It can be a bit pricey but the food quality and quantity are worth it. I would highly recommend the filet mignon sandwich and salmon salad, both of which were cooked perfectly. Nothing makes me sadder than dried out meat, so when you find a place that cooks it moist and tender it's memorable. The horseradish sauce on the filet mignon sandwich was delightful and the bread was good. As for the salad I highly enjoyed the vinaigrette, it was light and tasty. The mango salsa complemented the fish well. Usually I'm wary of fruit and fish combinations because the balance can be easily thrown off, but the cafe is great at harmonizing ingredients and flavors within their dishes. They utilized bold flavors but nothing overpowered the well cooked proteins. The Pavilion Cafe has become one of my favorite places to eat lunch, I will definitely return again and again to eat scrumptious food and view beautiful art. read more

The food here was very surprisingly good for a museum restaurant. There was a great menu selection that could meet just about anyone's palate. Portions were of good size and presentation was beautiful and well plated. The attention and service of the wait staff was very good as well. The courtyard and patio dinning really added to a relaxed and comfortable dinning experience. I would go back just for the food, but if you plan on visiting the museum, make sure you plan to have you lunch there. It is well worth it. After my Shangri La Tour I visited the Pavilion Café for lunch. I wasn't disappointed! I was looking for something light, healthy and refreshing so I ordered the Grilled Shrimp Salad. It's a nice summer salad with shrimp (obvis!), mixed 'nalo greens, strawberries, oranges, avocados, onions, and thinly sliced carrot straws tossed in a light ginger-shallot vinaigrette. This salad is absolutely delicious. I also ordered a pot of hot Jasmine tea which poured about two cups worth of tea for me. Side note: the tea pot was really cute and modern. The service was standard. My waitress asked if I wanted anything else after my salad, I asked her for the menu to see if I wanted to get a dessert or possibly some soup, then another server asked if I was done with my salad (which I wasn't since I still had a couple shrimps left and some greens). I ordered the soup of the day which was Chicken Noodle. I only got one piece of chicken in my soup, but I didn't demand for more chicken. Overall, the wait time for food during lunch hours wasn't too bad on my visit. I got in and out rather quickly, and seeing that the cafe does ask that you make reservations I was pleasantly surprised that I was seated immediately. The host staff were great and very personable! The prices are a little high, but it is expected because youre surrounded by amazing works of art. The food is great. They have a variety of drinks like lemonade and teas as well as wines. The food consists of mainly salads and sandwiches. They also have pasta and soup. I loved the salad vinaigrette on the goat cheese salad. The filet mignon sandwich is also very good if you want something more filling. I would be whole-heartedly in love with this place if the service lived up to the classy, swanky concept. 100 Stars if I could. Like a Michelin rating--worth a trip to Honolulu, just to dine here. The food is perfect. Salads are generously sized (shareable), gorgeously plated (Instagrammable), and seasoned with balance and restraint. The same goes for the daily soups, sandwiches (my favorite: the CLASSIC piadina), and entrees. The space is a gem! Indoor but open-air, you get the cool trade winds with natural lighting and shade. The acoustics are great too; you never have to shout or crane your neck. The outdoor waterfall provides just enough ambient noise so that if the restaurant is empty, you don't feel alone. And unlike music, it doesn't compete for attention. Service has the grace, expediency, and warmth of fine dining. Even though a meal can move quickly, you never feel rushed. The managers are very organized Once I came with a party of 15, and we were finished within an hour. My experiences at the Cafe have always been harmonious and enjoyable, and I love bringing friends here to introduce them to this oasis--and of course, the Museum!!! The portobello mushroom sandwich is always my favorite here. I also had this chocolate haupia tart with coconut cake a couple months back that was just heavenly!! It had so many flavors and textures. Pleasant setting, great customer service, OK food quality, and very overpriced food. We went to this place on a Friday afternoon at the recommendation of an Uber driver who said he used to work there and raved about the food. The employee at the front was very pleasant and helpful and communicated well. Unfortunately, eating in the restaurant required a 45-minute wait, but he said we could order take-out and eat anywhere in the museum where food and drinks were allowed. I ate the piadina and the chicken soup with coconut milk and rice and the ginger lemonade. The piadina was a wrap with vegetables (e.g. greens), cheese, some ham, and pesto. Unfortunately, the cheese type they used was mostly tasteless, and the pesto was mostly at the bottom of the wrap. My dining partners enjoyed their shrimp salad, kalua pork sandwich, and chicken soup. If I had unlimited money, I'd eat here more often. The pavillon cafe provides a nice, cool, outdoor atmosphere that doesn't get too noisy as it is nestled within the Honolulu Academy of Arts. The food was fresh and my salmon burger was "moist" (as described by my friend) and if it wasn't for the bad service I would have given them a 4. Our waiter was not very friendly or attentive. We waited 15-20 min just to have our order taken and they weren't even that busy. I think the manager saw that we were ready so she came to start taking our order and then he came to finish. My salad came with no dressing on it and when I asked for some he gave me a weird look. He didn't want to show us the dessert menu even after we asked for it. I really like this place. I've eaten here several times over the past year or so. The food is simple and delicious. The menu is relatively small but the sandwiches and pasta dishes are always fantastic and fresh. I think the real attraction for me if the ambiance. The restaurant is located in a covered, outdoor courtyard. There are trees, plants and artwork all around. There is a nearby water feature that creates a soothing backdrop to your meal. It's a very relaxing atmosphere. I work in downtown Honolulu and can make it here by car in 10 minutes; faster than walking to Chinatown. It's so relaxing, I hate to go back to work! Almost everyone who comes here says "Wow, this place is great, I never knew this was here!" The staff is always friendly and professional. read more

Tranquil atmosphere and great food. I love the little touches of the place: the antique furniture, the little plants on each table, open air doors, and the flowing water outside. The place has a very calming effect on you. The food here is just great, and the whole menu is filled with great Vegetarian or Carnivore friendly options. The selections range from large salads to sandwiches to pasta. My favorite is the Filet Mignon Sandwich, it is lathered in this fantastic caper dijon relish. That relish is so good, and it just adds to the great cuts of beef. Another favorite is the Portobello Sandwich, it has a great amount of juiciness. It does get a bit messy though. I wish that they would add horseradish to it. The last time I was there I had this hearty and delicious Kabocha Ginger Soup; probably one of the best soups I had had in a long time. It was such a lovely visit today. I didn't plan on having lunch at the Pavilion Cafe, but decided (rather last minute) that it might be fun to try and have lunch there. We were in the area when I called the cafe around 12:45 and asked if they were booked. The host was very accommodating and said it would be no problem at all and that he would see us in a few minutes. Sweet! Parking: There is street parking available for HAA but in case that's not your cup of tea, there is parking at the Academy Art Center (entrance from Beretania or Young St). It's $3 for every 4 hrs w/ validation. Food: The food was excellent. Just like I remembered it. Perfect for lunch...nothing too heavy. What my husband affectionately refers to as 'chick food'. I like it. So there. I had one of their specials of the day, a Lamb Salad. A mixed green salad w/ asparagus, julienned carrots, & radish sprouts, topped with sliced cuts of perfectly cooked lamb & a light vinaigrette dressing. My girlfriend had the Shrimp Salad, similar to mine (except w/ shrimp and more veggies). All in all good choices on our part. Service: Service was great. We were greeted by name by the host (who had remembered me calling), and immediately seated. Our server (didn't get her name) got our drinks almost as soon as we had been seated. I *love* that. She was friendly and offered suggestions on the menu and really made our visit quite pleasant. Even when we were finished with our lunch (lingering over dessert and wine) and they were obviously closing up for the day, they told us not to rush and to let them know if there was anything else they could do for us. Recently came here for lunch and walked away $80 none the richer. Just two specialty salads and dessert! Should of went to Mariposa, was what I thought. This place is spendy if you start ordering their specials like the lamb and shrimp salads. Whoa! The bill sort of took my breath away. Yes, the setting is beautiful and very Zen. The clientele is mostly retired older folk with money, go figure. Service is average to lower than average, just don't challenge them to strut their stuff or you'll see the Wizard isn't what he's cracked up to be. I'll strictly stick to the sandwiches next time. The desserts are hit and miss, thought I haven't tried them all in order to make a fair assessment. I'll start off by saying had the service been better, I would have given Pavilion Café four stars. OK, that said, when you are on vacation, one must remember part of the experience is to relax and not be on any schedule. We arrived famished after going on the Shangri La tour of Doris Duke's house. We had a reservation and were seated right away. We noticed we weren't alone in our decision to stop and have lunch after the tour; other tour goers were seated all around us, probably at least 4 other groups in all. Also, we were at the tail end of the lunch service, so the folks who had been dining were at the end of their meals and were clearing out. After looking at the menu for about 10 minutes, we noticed ALL of the other tables around us had been served drinks, translate - their orders had also been taken. We waited patiently. It was kind of surreal, I felt like we were the invisible table. Servers were moving in and out; drinks being served; tables being cleared; flower arrangements being removed; it was obvious that the staff were all in a hurry to close down the café. My wife and I started making a game of it - how do we attract attention without waiving our arms wildly? Finally, as one of the servers was making her way back to the kitchen, I was able to get her attention to come over. I told her I had thought we have been forgotten and we'd like to order. She asked us for our drink order, which we were prepared to give. Almost immediately, she was about to turn on her heal when we both asked her to stop in her tracks; we were also prepared to give her our food order. Somehow, she just didn't understand that nobody had been to our table. As she started to comprehend the situation, she asked if we had heard what the specials were, we answered in the negative; she then asked if we wanted to hear what the specials were; we answered in the affirmative - this was getting really painful... Shouldn't this be somewhat obvious now, even if we weren't her station? My wife ordered her original choice of the Grilled Ahi; I had questions about the quality of the Grilled Salmon vs. a few of the other things on the menu, like perhaps the Grilled Ahi. I asked her for her recommendation and the response was very generic. She did say that she liked the Salmon, but that the most popular item was the Ahi, or I should perhaps order the grilled chicken. Hmm, where did the chicken come from? I wasn't quite sure about the endorsement, so I decided to go with my first choice of the Salmon. I left the table to wash my hands; according to my wife, our server returned to confirm the order because she hadn't written anything down. It was a good thing she had; she hadn't quite remembered that the order was for 2 lemonades, 1 ahi and 1 salmon. My wife received her order of the Ahi and the server said to me not to worry, my Salmon was close behind. I waited about five minutes and my Salmon came out. According to my wife, her Ahi was prepared perfectly and other than a little too much salt in the salad dressing, it was good. I enjoyed my Salmon; the fish was prepared perfectly and the mango chutney was a nice touch. I did enjoy all of the flavors and thought that both presentation and food quality was quite good. In summary, someone needs to shake up the serving staff. Better training could resolve these problems. Timing of orders to come out at the same time is a minor problem, but at least the fish was prepared correctly in both cases. I had thought that maybe our real server had gone home because the lunch service was coming to an end, but about thirty minutes after leaving the café, we saw that the entire staff was having their "kitchen table" lunch. This is a nice spot to have a lunch date. A nice date -- dress up a bit, take your time. The setting is classy and peaceful. You don't have to visit the art galleries at the museum to go to the café. It's probably a good idea to make a reservation, though. I ordered a roasted lamb salad, which was great -- the lamb was a perfect medium rare, in a great dressing, just the right size for lunch. I'd get it again any day. It was a special, not on the menu, so I hope they bring it back and consider making it a regular. My wife ordered a mahimahi and soba salad. Sure it seemed like they were slightly rushed but at least the food came out fast and I was hungry. Got the pasta special with tomatoes, shrimp and shitake mushrooms. It was good! I think it was like $16. The salads run from about 12-20 bucks. There's a lot of stuff on the menu I want to try like mahi mahi soba salad and white bean salad. It's pricey as expected for a museum restaurant but the setting is open and gorgeous and the service was solicitous. This is more than your normal museum cafe. The Honolulu Museum of Art Cafe is located outside the art covered wall leading up to the Hawaiian arts section. The cafe has great portions that are worth the money, and a variety of great food choices including: daily changing pastas that are always quality, many thoughtfully crafted and fresh sandwiches that come with salads, and an extensive drink menu that has many alcoholic and nonalcoholic choices(the guava juice is a must try). Centered in the middle of the Honolulu Museum of Art, it's a great place to spend the day. You can view the galleries and plan your lunch. Be sure to make reservations, as the restaurant can become very busy with museum visitors and downtown workers. The food was delicious and worth the price. Be sure to try more than one thing on the menu, but don't be fooled the portions are very generous. The soup was delicious and the salad was nice and crisp. They have a dessert menu but unfortunately I was so full from the soup and salad that I did not have the opportunity to order a dessert. I will definitely have to go back for another round so that way I can try their wonderful dessert menu. This is a great place for couples to spend the day or friends to enjoy art and share a great meal. This is not something that you can do in a couple of hours. To make it worth it, you should arrive early to make a reservation and view the galleries while you wait for your reservation. Always delish! Been coming here for years! Beautiful setting, simple, fresh and calm! The food is fantastic! I've pretty much tried it all! Some of my fav's.... The Piadina, pesto, arugula, fresh mozz, beautiful tomato, prosciutto in a Italian flat bread Farmers salad, right up my ally, curry chicken, carrots, green beans, fresh slaw, apples and other yummy delights Fillet sandwich Big Island goat cheese salad Food is fresh and clean, no craziness just simple good food. Organic when they can and supporters of local farmers! Yay! Years ago you wouldn't tip because the staff gets a higher wage not sure if that is still the case, I've noticed the prices have gone up, but that's typical. I came here last September and I was lucky I got a reservation within an hour of arriving at the museum. The patio is really a pleasant place to have lunch. I ordered the mushroom sandwich that came with a small salad. Food was very good, courtyard patio with fountain is stunning, if you have time hit up the gift store too. I had a really nice day at this museum. read more
