Home Cake really is all that and more. Everything everyone else says about this place is true. I got sparkly "petal luster" for marzipan and lots of free advice. The clientelle is also kinda fun, ranging from 30-something cupcake afficionados to one nice old guy who seemed like a longtime customer who told me I'd be better off listening to the proprietoress' advice than on that stuff you read on the net. I know some reviewers say it takes a long time to shop here, but if you take into account the time you would spend going to 4 different stores to gather what you can get here in one stop, it pays to shop here. This is by far the best place for the home cake decorator. The owner Greil, is the second generation owner and I'm a third generation customer. My grandmother took cake decorating classes there when I was in diapers. When I was old enough to hold a pastry bag my grandmother took me there and I'm still a loyal customer to this day. It is a small store with EVERYTHING you could think of and I do mean EVERYTHING! If you want wide isles and fancy display cases in store with tens of thousands of floor space this is not the place for you. If you don't find what you are looking for, just ask and she will show you where it is. The selection out weighs the clutter... how she is able to get SO MUCH in such a small store is amazing! I've been going to this decorating store since the early 90's and I don't go anywhere eles for my specialty supplies or just a special hug. You get so much information and baking wisdom that you can't find in a book or school...its like asking your mother or family member who knows how to bake without all the fancy stuff...common sense stuff. bottom line is i wanted to like this store. i wanted to LOVE this store. having a cake supply shop like this in my neighborhood(ish) in seattle seems like a dream come true. i read the other reviews thinking i would come in and they would help direct me to just what i need in a kooky filled-to-the-brim shop. the place IS full, and it has some secret organization system, but no large signs to help direct you where to go. its a tough place to fend for yourself. in my case, i didnt need much, mostly a frosting spatula (lost mine) and some colored sugar, and getting help to find those two items took over a half hour. the owners didnt greet me when i walked in, and acted annoyed when i needed help because they were tediously, slowly chitchatting with other customers. ringing up was the same slow process. i get it, half the fun of a neighborhood store is chatting about the projects you are working on, but its also a business. snubbing some customers that need quick help to chitchat or give undivided help for 10 minutes to "regulars" is a great way to not acquire new regulars. it was an errand that i thought would take 5 minutes and ended up taking over 30 minutes on my lunch break, making me late for work. this place has a great selection of many baking items you never knew you needed. if youre looking for a unique candy mold or cookie cutter, this is a good place to look before ordering online. i get the strong feeling that they base their prices pretty fairly based on their costs, plus they make it easy to only buy what you need (instead of large packs or big bags) so i dont have many gripes about their prices. but they definitely have some items that strike me as overpriced and there's of course a better selection online. i wish they had been friendlier, as i love to support local business. as it stands, i will probably drop in when im in a lastminute baking bind, but otherwise stick to finding the baking stuff i need online. read more

i was looking around on yelp for a baking supplies store. i found this place based on other fellow yelpers' experiences. i am very happy i trusted the reviews! parking is tiny but plenty of street parking and i found one right out front of the store. i walked in and BAM! all these baking needs you know are everywhere! i loved it! so many cupcake liners, so many candy molds, cake shapes, designs, decorations, ANYTHING from wedding to baby shower to any holiday. books, colors, tips, sugar dust, whatever it is, this store had it. my first mistake was i walked in without looking for a basket or cart or whatever, i just dove into picking up everything i saw in sight and carried in what i could with my arms! my arms got too full so i started leaving it on the counter by the cashier and the owner knew which pile was mine so she didnt touch it. after looking around for 30 mins, i finally discovered the basket- i was just too busy and distracted looking around for AWESOME BAKING stuff! i didnt know what i wanted. i picked up so many things- one of everything or three! what i love is that she is very reasonably priced! if you were looking something in particular, you can ask the lady and she'll point you to the right section. mind you this store is not completely organized like michaels. but heck, i LOVED how everything was everywhere and it's not like baking pans were in points A & B, they were in an area where ALL the baking pans were whatever size and shapes you wanted. i liked that everything was visible. i dug around like it was my pantry full of baking supplies. she didn't carry certain candy molds (i was looking for diamond rings) but shoot, she had plenty of other shapes. all in all, i love her selection. her store carries a lot of inspiration for ideas and i must say its much better than michaels and joanns put together as far as baking supplies goes (any kitchen store too). this store is my new baking inspiration destination! i dont live far but bellevue is somewhat of a tiny trek to get to northgate/mapleleaf to buy baking supplies- worth the trip :) read more

Greil, the owner (her mother and aunt owned it before her starting in the early 1960s) is a wealth of pastry/cake information. If you're needing some helpful hints as well as supplies, go at a time when it's quiet and she'll impart lots of helpful tips. Yes, the store is a little crowded and hectic, but most pastry/cake stores are (see NYC). Greil has everything you could need and very reasonable prices. I've always found her to be pleasant and forthcoming, although she's a "tell it like it is" lady, so expect her to be frank. This place is amazing. It feels a little like flea market in that you have to dig through a lot of loosely organized chaos, but it's full of treasures. As a hobby baker, I like that I can buy very small quantities of things like flavorings, food color, and disposable pastry bags. I love that I can find every piping tip Ateco makes along with a hand-written Wilton equivalent chart. And if you don't know what you need for your project, the owner will get you squared away with exactly what you need and give lots of good tips. Yes, it often takes a little while to check out, but I love listening to what other people are working on and hearing the owner's advice. As others have said, find parking someplace other than right in front, leave yourself about double the amount of time you think you'll need, and come prepared to learn and be inspired. read more

I wanted to like this place. It's in my neighborhood, and it has a treasure-trove of stuff that reminds me of my great-aunt's huge attic crafts room that I loved as a kid. (Only dustier and way less organized.) But I needed only one thing. I arrived at 10:00, the posted hour for opening of the business. I didn't have time to fool around. Door open, nobody in the store but another customer. Looked around for what I needed for about five minutes. Looked around for someone to help me. Even halooed a couple of times, thinking they might be in the back. No answer. The other customer said that she had noticed a truck there, that perhaps the owner was unloading something. She was. I just walked up and said "Hi." She said she would be right in, but her tone was really kind of aggressive. I went back and waited for her in the store. When she came in, I received a constant stream of snide and rude remarks about "of course you're in a hurry" (her words, not mine) and about how she "hadn't even set up her till yet" and various other comments seemingly designed to make me feel guilty for inconveniencing her by wanting to buy something from her during her posted business hours. Somehow she did manage to make me feel guilty, and towards the end I said something like "I'm sorry. I am in a bit of a hurry, there's a school project and I went all over town looking for meringue powder." (Actually I received the request to make icing yesterday afternoon and went to two grocery stores, but I was upset and flustered at this point.) She finally managed to give me my change (I also apparently inconvenienced her by wanting to pay cash) and said "Yeah, I'm always the last place people think of." Yeah, based on her attitude I'm not surprised that's the case. Terrible customer service, probably the worst I've ever received from a small business. It's her business and she can run it however she wants. Clearly there are lots of people on here who love her and her store. I won't be back. read more

I read all the reviews before coming here, so thank God because I would have brought my double stroller!! I ended up wearing my son and walking with my toddler. We walked in and it was like Heaven.. Ahhhh I loved it! The owner was sweet as can be and helped me pick out everything. She gives the best customer service and made me feel like family. I asked her if she reads her yelp reviews and she said no because she doesn't want to get a big head lol. But anyways, it is a bit chaotic in there and my daughter was running around grabbing things. I got onto her and the owner told me not to worry about a thing and that she'd watch her while I shopped. How freaking sweet is that?! Her prices are decent and she is so knowledgable!! I asked if she had cupcake stands and she said "yeah, I could sell you a really expensive cupcake stand, or I could sell you the stuff to make them yourself for cheaper!" With items piled almost floor to ceiling, and an extremely helpful proprietress (Griel) to walk you through any project, this place is my go-to resource. It's helped me go from being a complete amateur to making items (sculptured fondant cakes, molded chocolates) that I am incredibly proud of. You can find ANYTHING here, and if you can't quite find what you're looking for Griel will order it for you. Examples include character/form cake pans (football, disney, animals, whatever), a massive variety of chocolate molds, tons of cookie supplies, seasonal items for any occasion, and tons of decorating materials, both just to buy and put on your cake or to support your own creativity (disco dust is my favorite). read more

My daughter is learning to bake and wanted a certain baking kit from the local craft store for Christmas. At 200 dollars per kit, I found it a tad hard to swallow. I checked Yelp for a baking supply store and found this place. Thank you fellow yelpers, this place did not disappoint. It is cluttered, but that seems to be as it should. The lady who helped me was extremely helpful. She asked me great questions, took the time to understand who I was buying for and what level of skill set was involved. Then she explained what each the things she recommended were used for and how to build upon it. It seems that no matter if you're an accomplished cake decorator (the aunt who did our wedding cake was, and she wanted to shop here for the supplies) or a Mom doing her child's first birthday cake, this is definitely the place to come. Not only for the endless supply of everything, but the wonderful advice from the owner. She knows the answer to anything you'd want to know, plus the best and preferred method. Their front display of cookie cutters is seasonal, with Easter/Spring probably being my favorite. Mostly, I highly value their advice - (Did you know you can construct/mold almost anything out of rice krisipie treats and frost it?) Wishes? This place is awesome! They have so much amazing stuff that you'd probably only be able to get online and everything is really reasonably priced. The shop is very cluttered - and half the stuff isn't even kept in the main shop area, so make sure you go in with a list of what you want and ask the owner. While I was there I heard her, very patiently, give great advice to a young girl who was making holiday cakes. I will definitely return next time I need something more specialized than the supermarket or Michael's can provide. read more
