Delicious beef stew with cornbread. Cobbler was so so.
MaryLou D.

Tonight was my first night of trying out this place out even though I've been in Amarillo for two years. To be honest, I always liked the name but I thought it was just a hamburger place and that didn't interest me. This evening I was in the parking lot of Big Lots after doing some business at Wells Fargo and started looking on Yelp for a place to have dinner. I was looking for someplace inexpensive but good. When I came across this place I took another look at it and between the comments and the pictures I decided to give it a try. I'm glad I did. I was a little worried when I walked up to the front door because there was an unpleasant smell in the air but as soon as I stepped inside the aromas were wonderful from the home cooked food. I saw on the Specials Board they had beef stew with cornbread. I was debating between that and trying their baked potato but I'll have to try the baked potato next time because the Stew won out. You order from a counter and then go sit down and wait for your number to be called. The place was about 10 times bigger than I expected it to be since it is classified as a diner. It has a sort of 1950s look with the checkerboard tile and all around are street signs and murals with a baseball theme. Everything looked very clean and I noticed that they came around and cleaned up tables shortly after people left which is always good to see. The beef stew was absolutely delicious. It reminded me of my mother's cooking which is a compliment. She wouldn't have put tomatoes in her beef stew but I do so it might have reminded me more of my own. It was so nice to see large chunks of real carrots, not canned or frozen and they were generous with the amount of beef. The perfect meal on a chilly night. I decided to splurge and try the cobbler. I don't usually order drinks and desserts to save money. The cobbler wasn't bad but it wasn't nearly as good as the beef stew. It might have even been a canned Peach filling. It had an odd consistency like Elmer's Glue but was uncannily clear. There was only one slice of peach on it. The crust was not light and flakey but more dense and chunky. I ate the whole thing but probably wouldn't order it again. The employees I encountered were very nice. I definitely plan on coming back sometime.

Pasta with grilled chicken and veggies

Fast service, good prices, good food! I ordered a pasta plate with grilled chicken and veggies. It turned out way better than I expected. The rest of the party liked what they ordered and we have no complaints. The restrooms are clean and the clerks are pleasant. Plenty of seats and booths to choose from.

Nice ambience, but nothing special about the food. I can get the same quality by opening up cans at home for a lot less money.

Some of the best chicken fry in Amarillo for the price. I've been impressed every time I've been.

It was 103 degrees outside and I was thirsty and wanting something sweet like ice cream. I thought…read moreabout going to Braum's but I had seen the sign for the Root Beer Shake here and decided to stop by to give it a try. Before I gave it three stars I decided to read some of the other reviews and see what other people had to say. I have a feeling my experience was pretty similar to others. I only got the shake. It was okay but nothing spectacular. It didn't have a real strong root beer flavor. The worst thing about it was that it was so Frozen I couldn't sip it through the straw. I was about to suck my cheeks down my throat giving it a try. I tried to blow through the straw to clear it and I couldn't even blow the Frozen drink out of the straw back into the cup it was so stuck in there. Finally I went over to the drink machine and put about half an inch of Root Beer in it. I stirred and stirred and stirred. 20 minutes after I got my drink I think I'd only gotten the level down half an inch or so. I managed to drink a little bit more although by now I was getting brain freeze. I went back over and put some more Root Beer in and stirred and stirred and stirred. In the meantime I observed some of the other customers. There was a definite problem with an internet order. What they had prepared didn't resemble the order that was placed. The attitude behind the counter was definitely that the problem was with the customer. The poor kid picking it up looked like he was just a gofer picking up an order for someone else. A couple other ladies seemed to wait an inordinately long time for their to-go order. When I watched my shake being made it looked like it was going to come out right away. Next thing I knew somebody else was making it so all I can assume is at the first kid didn't do it right or the machine was malfunctioning or something. So my one Root Beer Shake took longer than it should have. I wasn't in a hurry so it was no big deal. A lot of the tables looked like they had been previously used and not wiped down. I don't think I saw a single person wiping down a table the whole time I was in there and I had to have been there at least half an hour. I finally got the drink level down enough that I could top it off a third time with root beer. This time seems like I was able to liquefy it enough that it started to pass through the straw. I hardly ever saw anyone smile behind the counter, act pleasant, thank the customers, Etc. There seemed to be a lot of irritation and stress going on. Not an atmosphere I would be in a hurry to return to. I probably wouldn't get the Root Beer Shake again although it tasted much better after I added enough Root Beer from the drink machine to it.

I came in skeptical of the great reviews... and I was wrong. This place was great! The food was…read moresuperb (we had the enchiladas with Chicken Tinga, Tofu taco and Diablo Shrimp taco) and the blueberry pomegranate tea was delicious. While it is counter service, the staff was attentive even when seated, they were helpful and friendly while ordering, and they even seemed to be having a good time doing their jobs well. Its decor is eclectic and the building is nothing to write home about...but... the restaurant is excellent.

I had the imposter with breaded mushrooms. Super crispy Cremini mushrooms with great crunch but the rest was kinda meh, romaine and drizzle of sauce and balsamic. At least with the pickled onions there was a little palate tease. Also tried the Al pastor with jackfruit. Opted for this version on a salad and it's a whopping serving size. Hearty serving of jackfruit with plenty of sauce and dressing. Had nice little nibs of some crunch too. Service was super, super nice. I'd call the inside dive-ish. Totally relaxed and chill ambiance. I'll be back to try more items! My one dislike was that I don't care for the balsamic drizzle on either dish... just doesn't pair well with these flavors. Side of pineapple was yummy to balance the heaviness of both dishes.
