I had made an appointment to have an ultrasound done on my older goldendoodle to determine what was…read morecausing her symptoms she was having. I chose this center because it was easier to get to from Williamsburg versus the one in Richmond and Midlothian. 1st complaint in my opinion was I had to insist on meeting the Doctor wish I will refer to as Dr A who was performing the basic examination and ultrasound. I was told by the tech it wasn't their policy for the vet to come into an exam room and talk to an owner upfront. I found this very unprofessional not to introduce yourself and to personally explain the procedure and exam she was going to do & not to rely on just the info provided by the technicians. Ultrasound came back with two large masses meaning cancer and at her age there wasn't anything one could do for her so I decided at that moment to have her euthanized. This is where my 2nd complaint starts. Putting a beloved pet to sleep is one of the most difficult experiences a pet owner can face. I expected a level of compassion and empathy which unfortunately in my opinion again was lacking. It appeared there was little effort made to acknowledge the emotional difficulty family members were going through. I understand veterinarians handle these situations regularly, but for pet owners, this is often a devastating and deeply personal experience. A few kind words, patience and genuine compassion can make a significant difference, something as simple as I'm sorry you have to go through this. Unfortunately, that was not my experience here. After I decided on euthanasia they took my dog to the back room to insert a port into her leg to provide the drugs to euthanize her. They took so long in doing this making it even more painful & agonizing for us waiting in the exam room, it must have been a good 20 + minutes to insert this port. I've had many dogs in my lifetime and when they had to be euthanized it only took like 5-10 minutes. The only one who said sorry I was going through this was Ashley the receptionist who was extremely kind.

We had 2 experiences. One was our 14 year old poodle. She seemed t have a mass on her stomach. Never met the Dr. they said she had licked it and it was infected. Impossible with a surgical suite and an Elizabeth collar!!! The mass is still there. A few weeks after that we called multiple days in a row one day it was Dr Purdue which I would not use . We asked Dr Dr brooks she was busy so we walked her in the next day . The online vet I aid to analyze what was going on said it was a bowel obstruction .. Dr brooks did the X-ray they called us later that afternoon and said she had a bowel obstruction and foreign object In her stomach. All they were concerned about was getting a credit card to charge the full surgical estimate. I said I'll pay whatever to save her. Hours and hours later Dr brooks called us back. And said she had removed the stomach contents. I asked her what about the bowel obstruction did you remove it?? She very casually said oh she will pass it !!! I said that is why she was there why wouldn't you d that too ??? Nov reason .. 5 hours later my beautiful child died in my arms. This has destroyed our lives.... If called and told her on voicemail and text which they record everything that she had murdered my baby !!! A few days later I got an email from some corporate claims specialist asking to get me to call him!! He had the nerve to ask what would make me whole !!! Bring my baby back !!! He meant monetarily. He has blown me off for months. We had paid to breed her in the summer very excited... Now every time I go in my bathroom I break out in tears seeing her lying on the floor dead it's her tongue hanging out with her eyes open. I will never forget

They don't try and force any vaccines on you or guilt you for not getting one, and they're happy to explain the purpose of each one! They've always been knowledgeable. Their staff has always been friendly and helpful. Lately we have had to But what really makes us upset is how they are handling prescriptions now. We have one diabetic dog. Her insulin runs about $72/vial. Now Hanover Green wants you to use their online pharmacy for your pets prescriptions and that online pharmacy charges an additional $12-15 for shipping and handling for that particular insulin. So I go out there online to find another pet pharmacy with better terms for us, and I find one. They can't fax the authorization, nor can they mail it to me, but I can drive the 20 miles to pick up a copy of the prescription and then I can mail it to the pharmacy. And I was told they're doing it this way so they can "get some of their money back". Maybe it's not a problem for some folks, but it's what reduced their rating with us.

I was a client of this practice for over five years and had previously left a positive review…read morebecause I was happy with the care my cat received. Unfortunately, my recent experience changed my confidence in the practice. My cat is FIV-positive and has recurrent upper respiratory infections. After completing the prescribed treatment without improvement, I called because he was still congested. I was told he needed another appointment, which I scheduled. On the morning of that appointment, I was notified it was canceled because the veterinarian became ill. I completely understand that illnesses happen. What disappointed me was what happened afterward. I asked whether another veterinarian could see him that day or review his recent exam and treatment history since he had just been seen and had not improved. I was repeatedly told my options were an appointment the following week or an emergency hospital, despite explaining that an emergency visit was not financially feasible. I left feeling that there was no continuity of care for an established patient with a chronic condition. This wasn't a canceled "well visit" it was a sick visit that the clinic canceled without any resolution - such as have another Vet see my cat or at least review his chart and possibly speak with me. I transferred my cat's care to another Veterinary practice, where the veterinarian took the time to evaluate him, perform diagnostics, explain her reasoning, and develop a treatment plan. In the past week, the new Vet's office has seen him twice, has called me twice with updates on his labwork, and is checking in with me tomorrow - before the weekend. Before posting this review, I emailed the owner directly. She responded promptly, apologized, and told me she would investigate because my experience sounded unusual. I appreciated that response. However, despite waiting ONE week, I never received the follow-up I was told to expect. I hope this feedback encourages the practice to improve communication and continuity of care for long-term clients whose pets have chronic or recurring medical conditions. **Original review 2021: The staff and doctors are very friendly and caring. I never wait long for my cat to be seen. The doctors take plenty of time with me to listen to my concerns and give me guidance. This a wonderful office with animal lovers working there!!

After I waited 2 hours, I went to the receptionist and was told that it could be another 3 hours my cat would have to wait. And could even be longer than that. They just leave you waiting in the room. Nobody comes in while you are waiting. You just sit. Was told that we had to wait just like a hospital for humans. I have never waited in the emergency room 5 hours or longer. There weren't that many cars in the parking lot. So thoughtless and inconsiderate. After I was told that it would be 3 hours or more, I called Virginia Veterinary Center in Shortpump. They told me to come right over. As soon as I got there, they took my cat's vitals and told me they would take us back. One half hour later, they brought us back. We waited another 20 minutes for the doctor. He came in. Did an exam and 10 minutes later my cat got fluids in her for about an hour. It took 3 hours tops. I have to be honest with you. I wish I could have given a zero star to Blue pearl. There is absolutely no reason that anyone should have to wait 5 hours or more for an emergency pet hospital to be seen by the veterinarian. Unfair and scary, worrying for your pet around people who obviously don't care if you are there or not. A total waste of time.
