There's delicious food in walking distance if you're at the Federal or criminal court buildings on Spring and Main Streets. Homeboy Diner is on the second floor of the City Hall building. A welcome alternative to the very limited offerings in the courthouse snack bars. Four of us each chose a different sandwich from the readymade choices and they were all delicious and definitely not your prepackaged dried out version. These are upscale with fresh baby greens, tasty fillings and interesting breads. I had the chibatta with chicken salad. Fresh coffee, juices and an assortment of drinks too. Don't pass on the pastries and cookies; they are as delicious as they look. Thank you Homeboy for this oasis in the courthouse desert. read more

I was downtown on jury duty and wanted something quick and easy. On the second floor of City Hall, Homeboy diner is small with tremendous food. I had ine of the daily sandwich specials and it was super yummy. The sourdough bread was fresh and delicious. Definitely will return the next time I'm in DTLA. read more

If you happen to be near the courthouses in downtown and want something other than cafeteria food, this place is a good option. They have premade sandwiches which looked good, pastries, coffeehouse style drinks and some specials. I opted for the special of the day which was chilaquiles. They were delicious. Really neat place! I was looking for a sandwich place and this place popped up on my search and the location was so unique, I had to try it. Who goes to City Hall just for food? Anyway, the entrance is on Main Street, and you have to go through security and get a Visitor badge to go to 2nd floor. It's not much of a restaurant since people just order, pick up their food and leave, but there's plenty of seating out in the hallway. I got the Grilled Chicken Sandwich with Angela's Potion, and wow this was an amazing meal. The Grilled Chicken Sandwich had some amazing ingredients, such as asiago cheese, roasted peppers, and pesto mayo. Pairing that with Angela's Potion was perfect. On the bottle, it says it's made of spinach and mint limeade. While I'm not a juicer or have ever juiced anything, this was a very interesting drink. Very nice trip! The security guard recommended that I go to the top floor (after researching on Yelp, it's the 27th floor) to see the observation deck. What a nice lunch break :D read more

This was my fourth day of jury duty at the DTLA courthouse and I was still searching for decent vegan-friendly food in within walking distance. When I discovered that Homeboy Cafe was located at City Hall, I took a leisurely stroll around the block, through the metal detector, and to the info desk for a visitor's pass. Homeboy Cafe is on the second floor. It's small but it has variety. A vegan soup was on the menu but only available on certain days of the week. So I checked the salads for something I could eat. The Smash It Up, Homegirl looked interesting to me. The name of the dish makes me think that it's created with leftover ingredients. But I'm not complaining! I always order a toasted sandwich on croissant. Everything there is delicious. The service is very friendly. Cesar, the manager, has the most efficient style with amazing cu service. My coworker ordered the chilaquiles with chicken and it looked and smelled as good as it tasted (I had to try some lol). I jiggly recommend this place if you're in LA city hall. read more

Homeboy diner is a great lunch option at City Hall and a great opportunity to support a good cause. They have a selection of refrigerated items and a lot of sandwich options. I have tried a few of the sandwiches and they have all been good. I really like the quality of the meat, bread and vegetables. In addition to these items they also have some hot items on the menu. I haven't tried these her so can't comment. The prices here are very reasonable for the area. The diner is very small but they have seating in the hallway area right outside. It can be a bit of a hassle to get to if you don't work in City Hall, but a trip through security is worth it for great food and a look around City Hall after. read more

I work at City Hall so I probably find an excuse to stop by Homeboy 2-3 times a week - sometimes for coffee, sometimes for lunch, sometimes for a soda after a sad greasy lunch elsewhere. The staff here are surprisingly friendly (no offense, but when you hear of a cafe staffed by former felons, some concerns come up). They're always chatting with customers, and its overall a great go-to place to pick up snacks and drinks for the office. A great mom-and-pop family feel, even though its in actuality far from that. They've got coffee, lattes, cappuccinos, espressos, mochas soft drinks. Pastries - muffins, croissants, cookies, bagels, rolls, (too many to name), etc And for food items they've got soups (turkey chili!), paninis (chicken pesto!), tamales, burritos (jalapeno breakfast burrito and chorizo burrito!). Overall an excellent stop for breakfast/lunch/snacks/drinks. Small establishment, but a great variety and great service. I'm so glad that Homeboy is downstairs!! read more

I remember when this opened. There was a story in the LA Times. Since then, I've always wanted to visit. The eatery was very small. There were a couple of counters and shelves that were empty. Could've been that they didn't have enough time or staff to manage it. I ordered my BLT with a bottle of Mexican Coke and got it in 5 minutes, so it was fast. The bread had good texture and the salad was still cold, while the bacon was warm. Very freshly made. The clerk was friendly and busy was taking the orders and payment as well as making the sandwich. This place deserves a visit. I love the premise behind the store and will support it! read more

Working in City Hall, I often come here in the afternoon for a pick-me-up. They're located on the 2nd floor of Los Angeles City Hall, and are open M-F 6-5. First, the beverages. Their coffee is pretty good, and reasonably priced. It isn't gourmet, but it is very decent. Their espresso drinks are decent. They do have the addition of Mexican chocolate for your drinks, which adds a kick of sweet spice and is a great way to switch up a hot chocolate or a mocha. They have white chocolate as well. They sell a variety of bottled beverages, along with some snacks like yogurt and boiled eggs. They have a pastry counter with bagels, breads, muffins, and the like. Their zucchini bread is what I go for, as it stands out more than the rest and is a healthier alternative. They have pre-packaged salads from Homegirl that are very flavorful and contain more than just lettuce, and actually satiate you. They also have sandwiches, that are fairly priced, and if you go on a Friday evening they sometimes have $5 sandwiches. Good when you're in City Hall and need food or coffee! read more

I must say their tuna salad sandwich on rosemary rye bread was one of the best tuna sandwiches I've ever had because it was filled with flavor and spice. I really admire the mission and the good work that Homeboy Industries does. They are a great organization! This place, however, is meehhh. First, it isn't a "Diner". When I think of a diner, I think of a cozy neighborhood restaurant where you can sit and eat freshly cooked meals. Yes, it's in City Hall, so to expect that would be a stretch but still an appropriate name would help. This is basically a "cafe". They have coffee and lattes made fresh on site and REFRIGERATED sandwiches and other food items - prepared off site. They have "menus" here, but I have no idea why, since you grab the cold food out of the refrigerator like you do at 7-Eleven. Sandwiches are decent. If you want real food go to Homegirl Cafe. Is it me or do they have it mixed up? Homegirl Cafe, part of Homeboy Industries, is a full service restaurant while Homeboy Diner is basically a coffee shop. SWITCH THE NAMES! read more

I previously updated this review based upon a bad experience involving cold soup. Since then, I'm pleased to say that I haven't come across that experience a second time and on two separate occasions, I was actually told that the soup was not yet ready. So why still the deduction of one star? Well, since that time, Homeboy has acquired a few new staff members at their City Hall location. I'm not going to single anybody out in this review, but their attitudes really couldn't be any worse; It is quite literally border-line rude. By the way they respond or lack-thereof, I honestly feel like I'm burdening them whenever I order something. Seriously, lighten up a little. Fortunately, some of their older staff are still there and they are the complete opposite of these newer staff members. So I took a little walk to the LA city hall after being released for lunch during jury duty. ..ugh..... so since I had nothing better to do with my time I yelped, and found a sandwich place only .2 miles from the courthouse (one of the many in this area). Homeboy is located in the DTLA city hall on the second floor, the main entrance is on main st. , I stopped in and grabbed a sandwich. I ordered the Turkey Avocado on their jalapeno bread, the sandwich was great! The bread was not spicy but had great flavor, lightly toasted and full of lots of Turkey avocado, veggies and herb mayo. The sandwiches are made to order but they also have salads ready made and pastries too. Price was good as well, I paid 11.00 for a huge sandwich, chips, a cookie and a Snapple. Great service too; I had my dirty Coffee Bean tumbler with me from the morning and the guy washed it out and filled it up with ice for my Snapple! This place is absolutely wonderful. Try their white chocolate mocha and I believe it's called Angela's Potion (a spinach and mint limeade) are simply amazing. The mocha is served at the right temperature for me, that is, I don't have to wait 5 hours to drink it because it's scalding hot. The Angela's Potion also tastes like a mint julep, but healthier because of the spinach in it, which you can't taste. They also have some great healthy foods as well as baked goods that I haven't tried yet. Maybe I'm just afraid to be too amazed and hooked, who knows. The service here is great too, the people that work here are so nice and personable! I've never seen or experienced that before. I went here when on jury duty thanks to the positive reviews and to avoid the low-rated cafeteria at the courthouse. The counter service was friendly and the sandwich I got (grilled chicken panini) was delicious. I arrived right at lunch time, and although I got my order in pretty quick, a line built up after me and there was a bit longer wait for my sandwich than I expected, but not too bad, about 10 minutes. There are also only a few tables in the hallway if you plan to eat there. Since I was here at prime lunch hour, I had to share a table with someone else. Thankfully, she was friendly enough to let me sit. Also, I think the word "Diner" in the name is a bit of a misnomer. It's really a counter service sandwich shop with some pre-made salads and drinks and chips that you grab yourself. Being a "diner," I had expected a sit down place with full table service like a Denny's. This is not that at all, just so you know. Lastly, you do have to go through a security check point to get into the building, since it's inside City Hall. So be prepared to empty your pockets and go through a scanner. read more

This isn't so much a personal review as it's a vote of confidence for the business itself, in the hope of a future visit, having read much goodness about the establishment and the purpose of its existence: to help former prisoners, ex-gang members, and as it says, those who are at-risk for trouble. We don't see that kind of forgiveness and offering the olive branch to others in this world, and it's places like these which help right wrongs and try to prevent future wrongs from happening. To the employees who work here, this one knows nothing of your past choices, but you're doing the right thing by being here, with a job that is simple and can help set on a path to a comfortable life. And to anyone who thinks negatively of this place, kindly leave such thoughts to yourselves. These people are trying to be better and it does no good to make them feel bad because of mistakes while on the job, among other human error that we as mere mortal people all face in life. We all have bad days, and we should be more forgiving to these individuals when such moments can happen at work. Patience, compassion, and simple kindness go a long way. And one other point about this place that is definitely a high mark: having the weekends off, allowing the employees some time to enjoy leisure activities with friends and family.
