I said I would come back for the food so here is my review. Got recommended to come for the porkchop milanese. It was the best thing we had by far. The heirloom tomato salad was delicious. Bottom line: Homesick is a restaurant with a nice setting/atmosphere and diverse menu offerings. I feel like these guys could be 4 stars but with my recent brunch visit, I am feeling more around 3-3.5 stars this time. I am looking forward to seeing how they grow and get to that 4 star potential in the future, hopefully. The Deets: While in Asbury Park recently, I tried out Homesick in the former Brickwall location on Cookman Ave. Upon entering, the decor/atmosphere is very bright. I like that as opposed to a dark cave-like atmosphere. Since I was doing brunch solo, I sat at the end of the bar near the entrance. I did get a menu quickly, and given ample time to peruse the menu...well, actually a bit more time than I would have liked honestly. However the bartenders were very nice and I did get my order in with starting with a mimosa since it was my brunch for the day. The mimosa came in a very nice, elegant glass. But this dainty glassware, however nice, yielded a pretty dainty serving for $6. I felt like I had to take very dainty sips to make it last, to match the glassware/volume. For eats, I went with their biscuit with butter and then the Macaroni au Gratin. The biscuit was actually not bad for one made above the Mason-Dixon Line (as a Southerner, you'd better get a biscuit right for me). It was flaky and layered but not dried out, could be a bit more flavorful but tasted good. The Macaroni au Gratin looked wonderful, nice consistency for the cheese (combo of cheddar, Grana Padano, Jarlsberg) with nice toasted breadcrumbs on top and still sizzling a bit in the pan as it was brought out. The consistency held up throughout eating but I do wish more of the cheddar flavor had come through, the flavor was a bit muted for me. To take home, I got the duck quesadillas (duck, prosciutto along with Gruyere and provolone cheeses, a balsamic glaze) that had a honey-thyme sour cream on the side. The duck quesadillas were good, a bit different taste (maybe the duck/prosciutto combo yielding it) but not bad. I did not think the accompanying honey-thyme sour cream added to it so I completed them without it after a couple of bites with it. Also, I might mention this duck quesadillas offering comes in at $24 at the time of this writing. My bartenders, as I mentioned before, were really nice and very positive but I didn't get checked on as frequently as I would expect sitting at a bar with no others around. I realize I was at the complete other end of the bar from the main area near the kitchen but again, I was the only bar customer around that time. I hope in future visits to be more frequently checked on. In all, I had an OK visit to Homesick...this place has so much 4 star potential, but I have to say my visit this time was around the 3-3.5 star range. I am, however, looking forward to future visits to see that 4 star potential actualized. read more

Summary: Fabulous meal in downtown asbury with super cute atmosphere, interesting menu, and well crafted drinks !! I thoroughly enjoyed my meal at Homesick and I definitely will come back here next time I am in asbury because they had a really diverse menu that seemed fun to explore... they also have a sister restaurant next door that had late night events which looked really cute. The seating is really comfortable and the decor is super cute (lots of blown glass lights and interesting chandeliers) The drink I got, The Tutu, was a gin, lemon, lavender, and egg white cocktail which I absolutely loved. It was super fresh, light, and aesthetically so pleasing. I almost didn't want to drink it because it was so beautiful. We also shared a smash burger as well as pirogies. The burger was super yummy, it basically melted in your mouth the way a smash burger should! The fries were also really well seasoned and fried to perfection. I wish there were more pirogies for the price, but the four we got were actually so amazing. It also came with a piece of kielbasa which had a really great smoky flavor to pair with the pirogies and sour cream. My mother noted that the pirogies tasted like her own mothers homemade recipe and I agreed they were authentic and comforting !!! Our waiter was nice but wasnt too enthusiastic but still provided us with good service. I just wanted a bit more of a welcoming feel from the staff but i understand that restaurants are stressful so It didn't detract from the meal enough to lower the stars ! So warm and hospitable. Never obtrusive or interruptive. Knowledgeable on the menu and gave great descriptions. The texture of the grit cakes was phenomenal. Crispy griddled top and bottom and a gritty, cheesey, fluffy yet sturdy center. These are a MUST get. Paige informed us they are always on the menu and the accompaniments change seasonally. You will find them paired with mushrooms in the winter. Can't wait to go back! Entrees we're divine. Pierogis with grilled kielbasa links and the perfectly fried flounder with a zesty pickled chow chow. Both entered were Absolutely delicious and the preparation was flawless. Place has a really off putting odor to it. Hard to get past that. Smells like a dirty pet smart. Besides that, food was not good. We had the smash patty and French dip. The meat tasted old. The smash patty was too thick and not crispy like you would expect. It said it came with fried onions. When I think of fried onions, I think of thin sliced onion ring type onions but these were the same onions used for the French dip sandwich or a French onion soup. Super mushy burger all around. In a small downtown full of good food and semi long wait times, homesick always offers quick seating and a solid meal. Been here a handful of times, always aiming to try something different. With a dish ordered that always leaves me thinking about it afterwards, it makes it hard to not order the same damn good dishes you first tried over again. For one, the heirloom tomato salad with cornbread is by far one of my favorite "salads" to date. I'm sure it's a seasonal item for sake of the tomato's but whenever I see it on the menu I have to have it. The smack patty is also a simple but solid choice. Recently tried the brunch pie and it was the perfect merging between my two fave breakfasts dishes, homefries and biscuits and gravy. Also, gotta love a place with a chicken pot pie on the menu, really taking me back to a time of frozen Marie calendars but WAY better. We came here for a birthday brunch but were very disappointed with the service. At 10:30 am we were sat at our table. I watched four servers stand by the open kitchen window all on their cell phones while multiple tables were left unattended. Approximately 10 minutes later I had to ask another waitress (Denise- Thank you!!!) for water and for someone to greet us at our table. Paige finally showed up with water and to take our drink order. Approximately another 10 minutes later we finally had a brunch cocktail in our hands. I also want to mention that the restaurant was not even half full. Paige finally took our order, but she only came back to the table one time and never checked on us or asked how our food was. Luckily a bus boy brought me salt and a slice of lemon. The only saving Grace was the food. I had the lobster Benedict and my husband had the brunch pie. Both were excellent. It took over 90 minutes to have a single course. Ironically the hostess told us we only had 90 minutes at our table. That is a dream upon the management with service this slow. I hope the management addresses the service issue ASAP, because the food was excellent. They need another person on the bar and smaller sections a for each waitress. read more
