What stands out here is the great service! Even when they are busy, the lines move quickly and food is brought to your tables within minutes. The staff is really on point here. The picadillo is my favorite, but we really enjoyed everything we try to hear. Both the red and green salsa is delicious as are there made in-house Tortillas. Great option for the area! read more

Guy at Sprouts saw me examining salsa's and so we chatted. He is a BIG fan of Homestate. Said it was the best salsa he ever tasted, amazing food, etc. Perhaps I'm a victim of overselling. It was good food; but not amazing. Salsa good, not amazing. Customer service was excellent, very attentive. It was definitely a popular place; so I may be in the minority in my opinion. Great tex-mex influenced tacos (etc) with quality ingredients. The fresh flour tortillas are a dream. Great salsas. Addictive queso (you must, MUST add queso on the side. Great with their chips, also great for taco dunkin'). A couple options satisfy vegans and vegetarians too - and even as a meat eater, I actually prefer the potato and black bean tacos. Tons of flavor! And I think it's really cool that they always have a featured "band taco," a taco designed by a band! Some of these have been the best thing on the menu (the Love Song was perfection btw). Always check the band taco situation. I've been here over 10 times (no exaggeration) and it's just gotten better every time. Big fan. Can't wait to come back. Oh PS they have beautiful outdoor seating too. The place is adorable, but we usually do take out because we live 20 minutes away and my husband works near to this location. That being said, the online ordering system is useless. Such a nightmare to navigate. At the end of the frustrating ordering process they offer ApplePay as an option, which the staff says doesn't work with their system. I put in my order three times (about 20 minutes) and each time it said "done". They never got the order at the restaurant. The staff have told corporate over and over and they refuse to fix the problem. Great customer service? Not from the owners of the group... The food was good when they opened, but I'm sure it's much better when you eat it there, doesn't transport well. Fails after about 20 min, which is our travel time. The staff is so friendly and helpful, but again, the food doesn't lend itself to takeout. Besides that a number of parts of the order were incorrect. Sad. I never see calling as an option, but the staff said that people do. I would recommend calling if you must order takeout, but much better to eat at the location. Not worth the inflated prices for sure. So many great taco places that don't overcharge. But again, really nice staff. read more

One of my favorite taco spots. It's delicious homemade food in a great spot! I highly recommend the Trinity taco and the Tijuana Panther, these two are my favorites, but I haven't had anything I didn't like. To top it off, I don't normally like flour tortillas, but theirs are AMAZING! The loaded quest is great too! Parking can be a little tricky, so maybe try on the street. There's lots of seating indoors and outside. Service is fast and food is fresh. They will bus your table for you if you're sitting there long enough. I hate to write this, because I'm a pretty diehard Homestate lover, and I am happy to have one out in Pasadena. That said, the service at this location is hit or miss. I waited at the take out counter for almost 10 minutes, and by the time somebody came, the employeee didn't notice the line that formed (that I was at the front of) and helped a random person who walked up the line. Whatever, honest mistake. But the last three times I've ordered take out, they rushed and eithe missed items, or forgot to include the chips (different employees every time) so it's on ME to remind them, because they don't check the receipt. Now I have to un-staple the bag and count tacos. A few months ago, when we got home and opened the bag, my wife's rancho salad had a dead fly in it. I called the number, left a message. Never heard back. Individually, we let each incident slide. Its not like one big thing turned us off to Homestate- their Queso is awesome, their brand is cool, but it's a consistent dip in quality of service. read more

Love this place!!!! Not your typical taco joint. I call them "hipster" tacos. A little more pricey, but in many ways worth it. The staff is exceptional... friendly, courteous and really eager to please. Regarding tips, this is a place worth tipping. While it is a 'counter order with a table number' place, the staff will ask you if you need any refills on drinks and tell you to leave your stuff in the table so they can bus it. They are dog friendly, even providing water. The food, oh the food!! Exceptional! The guacamole is probably the best we've had, or darn near close. They also come with a huge amount of chips, and if you run out you can ask for more. I'm a huge fan of the brisket taco. The brisket is very nicely done and the combo of flavors makes it huge hit. Next, the vegetarian Blanco, eggs with shiitake mushrooms and mozzarella is delectable. The Migas are great too! The Lonestar is making my mouth water just thinking about it. Highly recommended it if you eat meat. Lastly, the frozen drinks, the margaritas and the spicy paloma are really good... solid amount of alcohol and spice...again, mouth watering. This is the state of California! We know Tacos !!! I don't like to give bad reviews but... My opinion is strictly about the food. Which is mediocre at best. Flavorless, soggy filled tortillas that may be filling but not satisfying. I had the bland chicken, stale potato and inedible picadillo tacos. As well as the cheese sauce / chips. Eh...This was my 2nd visit. (I went when they 1st opened) I didn't like it the first time . I wanted to give them a chance to get it right. Our neighborhood doesn't have a lot of hip and tasty places to eat. So I try to support the local eateries. Unfortunately, Home state doesn't understand tacos. Just because you wrap it in a tortilla doesn't make it a taco. Not a good one anyway. Atmosphere is nice as well as friendly. Needs to go back to the test kitchen on the food. This place was good. Got 4 tacos. Favorite was the trinity. These tacos are huge basically small burritos couldn't finish all four had to take one home. They use refried beans and a ton of egg on the tacos. The other tacos I got were underwhelming.. too much eggs. I can't believe I haven't written a review for Homestate since I've been going every Saturday for the past five months. The reason I keep going? Consistency and just excellent flavor. We go for breakfast and get the Guadalupe taco which is eggs with cheese and chorizo. First off, the tortillas are fantastic. They're made in house right in front of you. While you wait for your order you enjoy your spicy frozen blended Paloma. Don't judge until you have had one. Plus, it's Saturday. The loaded queso is filled with chorizo, sour cream and guacamole. I pour their house made salsa over both my loaded queso and my tacos. And if you like they're salsa, you can bring it home. As well as the tortillas which they sell by the dozen. This is place is pretty consistently good. Tacos are tasty, endless chips, good atmosphere especially for families, and extremely nice staff. Like really nice staff - whoever is in charge of hiring at this place should get an award because everyone is like always smiling. Only reason I'm giving 4 stars is the drink options. I wish they had more selections. Only two beers (neither which are good) and soda options are Mexican cokes. And there slushies are no bueno. It's not a deal breaker but it is something I always think about when I leave. A nice IPA or a root beer would be great. read more

I got the trinity taco and the potato taco and both are delicious but if I had to choose between the two, id get the trinity taco again and skip out on the potato taco. Trinity taco is a breakfast taco with eggs, potato and bacon. The potato taco was more like a vegetarian taco (with no eggs). I felt like the potato was a little dry. Two tacos kept me full and it was the perfect amount. The queso dip is also really great, almost tasted like queso + chili with sour cream. For drinks I got a cold brew and spicy paloma (get the slushy kind!) Cold brew was whatever (skip if you dont need coffee) and opt in for the spicy pamola. read more

Welcome to Pasadena, HomeState! I visited the day after their grand opening on Monday. (Happy Taco Tuesday!) The place was understandably packed due to its popularity, but the staff was very friendly and attentive, and the service was quick. The ambience was great, and little things like having bright yellow umbrellas ready for people waiting in line outside was a nice touch. We got the Trinity tacos, Texas Toast Sandwich, Lil Queso w/ Chips, and Iced Summer Tea. Everything tasted amazing, but the way they toast the inside of the sandwich nice and crispy without greasing up the outside just made me so happy. I also liked that the tea wasn't too sweet, and it balanced out the meal well. The patio is mostly surrounded by walls, so it got a little hot without the breeze, but they provide plenty of shade with their yellow parasols. I think they knocked it out of the park. I'm not even going to lie. I have been here once or twice and had an OK experience. That being said. Anybody that could just flip some tortillas and make some tacos. Better make some good fucking tacos. The fact that you charge like $10 for a tall can of beer. Which you can buy prepackaged by the way ;). Better equal out to some decent tacos. AND Some bitcih in service. NOT some abstract/screwed up way to order only online. I literally looked at the website for about 20 minutes. And could not figure out why I could not hit the checkout button. NOW YOU ARE 20 min from closing, next time I guess I'll just sit around a bunch of man bun friendly men. I had the Guadalupe and the Brisket tacos which were both just alright. I think their food falls in the category of Chipotle where it kind of confuses me and is probably not for me. The breakfast taco with the egg and chorizo was not the most flavorful. The eggs were soft, but the chorizo was lost and there was only a tiny bit of cheese. The brisket was salt forward and not very complex in flavor at all. Honestly it could've been any cut of beef. The prices... the prices. Go to a stand/ truck if you want a good taco in LA. I'd probably visit Guisados again before coming back here. And just a rant, but what's with takeout orders soliciting for tips these days? I hope that pandemic trend goes away sometime.
