We have been to the bake shop at least 6'times now after discovering it about 2 months ago. I desperately want to love the place but we have determined the only thing we like here are the breakfast biscuits. They are amazing... crushes! Crisp, delicate, creamy, savory... big enough to share!!!!!! They also make some killer coffee beverages! A tale of two trips (with some pie in the middle) creates this review of Hometown Bakeshop. You see I completely forgot to write this place up back in July and after visiting them only a few days ago (for a different reason), I realized a review needed to be penned. A four star compilation with mostly positive things to say. Let's get baking. Well, that summer trip actually involved breakfast. My wife and I trekked over to Centerport (on her birthday actually), for a quaint breakfast inside this small bake shop. The menu and its enticing Insta pics really brought us here and so we got both coffee and a morning meal. That aforementioned menu is quite vast and with so much to choose from, we decided to split "The Famished Breakfast" which included all kinds of tasty options (eggs, bacon, pancakes, fried cheese, tostones, and more). To nitpick, some items listed and some that we got weren't exactly the same, but to also be fair, everything was delicious. Equally delicious might be their variety of savory pies. They have so many to choose from, but you have to either call ahead or be lucky with what they have. Two made their way home with us (the piggy mac and the chopped cheese) which were consumed shortly after our visit with both being dense and rich, but definitely tasty. Not as equally delicious might be their coffee. Yeah, I think I've turned into a bit of a snob as these days I'm looking for legitimacy in the coffee itself and not just some pretty pics and cool flavors. Though Hometown has quite a variety of options, I'd say that if you're looking for some strong coffee, this wouldn't be the spot. If you're looking for some great breakfast and crullers, well... And therein lies our most recent trip: crullers. Hometown doles out a plethora of cruller options, but only on Sundays. Get there early (like pre-opening by 15-20 minutes at least) to be sure you snag whichever flavors they're going to have (check Instagram). Knowing we were going to share with a bunch of other people, we chose a dozen to try, but heed my words, these things are gargantuan! Also, they won't last long in preserving so if you have any leftovers, don't expect them to be good past the day you bought them. But in the moment while they're fresh, you'll be in cruller heaven after one bite (especially if you try the death by chocolate one). Overall, hometown Bakeshop is a legitimate place for everything they concoct in an oven (throw in stovetop too). Yeah perhaps their coffee sounds better than it tastes, but that might just be me wanting something a little more coffee forward. Beyond that discrepancy, I'd gladly return to Hometown for breakfast, pies, crullers, or who knows what else? Come and get some! read more

Great pastry/ baked goods cafe. Small place with small awkward parking lot. Staff are friendly and answer questions. They have a. Pretty extensive menu , with lunch and breakfast items as well. But come early if you have something specific you want. They have lots of things but bake just enough for a day so they often are out of things. This is so everything is fresh. Like we got the last chocolate babka, and they didn't have the birthday cake scone with cream cheese frosting or pumpkin muffin. We came for brunch and they had a lot. Another time, an hour before closing they are out of almost everything. So keep in mind. I think you can call ahead and order . They won't give you just a cup of water, you MUST buy a bottle of water, a little annoying when you spend a lot of money, but oh well. Great food. read more

I had a million questions since it was my first time. They have a wide variety of breakfast and lunch items to choose from. I ordered an apple crumb pie and an eggplant burrata pie. They don't have apple crumb on the menu so make sure you ask... they only have apple on the menu. I initially wanted the sweet potatoes pie and the s'mores but they didn't have either :( I guess that's why they take call ahead. Good to know for next time. The ambiance inside and outside is very cute. Patio outside and countless tables inside. Lots of beautiful flowers outside too. Great find and will be returning to sample more soon. Particularly looking to try some pies when I have more room in my stomach. I tried two breakfast items: the hometown madame and the savory dutch. Both were balanced and had good flavors. The savory dutch is a tad lighter and was generally better for me for a breakfast item, but both were tasty. I did try a pistachio crueller latte but it was pretty weak on the pistachio flavor and I'm unsure what the crueller part of the name meant. Would pass on the lattes. It's a pretty bustling spot. Line is a tad confusing. Goes from the displays towards the counter rather than from the direction of the door. I wish the staff cleaned tables between users but it's kind of a self serve establishment. There is parking in both the front and the back of the building. read more

This place is a local gem. It's small, but they have several tables, and you can dine in for breakfast and lunch. When the weather is nice, they also have a small outdoor seating area. My family enjoys buying the savory pies for dinner, and we're thinking about getting some for our Thanksgiving gathering. We ate in for the first time as a family today. The last time I came here with a friend, I saw a woman eating a pancake served in a skillet and asked what it was. She told me it was a Dutch pancake. So today, I ordered it. It was called a "Dutch Baby"--a sweet pancake, although there's a savory version too. The staff asked if I wanted the sweet or savory one, and I chose sweet. It takes a bit longer to prepare a Dutch Baby than other menu items, but it was worth the wait. The pancake was fluffy and light. It wasn't very sweet on its own, but the raspberry jam and maple syrup added just the right amount of sweetness. It also came topped with butter, whipped cream, and fresh berries. It was delicious, and I'm so glad I ordered it. I'll definitely go back for the Dutch Baby--I want to try the savory version next time. The donuts are to die for. Like any good bakery items sell out quickly so you need to get there early. If you are dining in seating is limited and parking while ample can be tight so know all this before finding a reason to complain. I will not be spending another penny here again. I had a very disappointing experience due to a mistake made by the staff. Part of my order was forgotten, and when I brought it to their attention, I simply asked if they could make it. Instead of resolving the issue promptly, the manager told me they had "47 tickets" in the back and that I would have to wait 30 minutes for the missing item--despite it being their error. This response was frustrating and unacceptable. What made the situation worse was the manager's attitude. The way she communicated lacked professionalism and basic customer service. You have to order it in advance, which is super easy to do online. Their website is great. The other pie I've had is the white chocolate raspberry pie. It is amazing, truly one of the best I've ever had. That they had in stock and I bought on a whim when picking up my online order. The place is a small, with a few tables inside. Such an anxiety provoking environment. The line, is before the menu or the case of options. You can't see anything you want to order and you don't know what they have and dont have. On a Sunday, a little before 1pm they were already out of their advertised crueler donuts that I came for. I ended up getting a donut just with some sugar on it, a pistachio crueler iced latte and a bacon egg and cheese on focaccia. There are so many tables in such a little space, like 20 when there should be 10. The line of people is literally on top of all the tables and everyone standing waiting is leaning on them. If you sit closer to the to the entrance door, it's even worse and suffocating. You could hardly squeeze through between the tables to get to the pick up section. Slow to prep the food and drinks, I understand the breakfast sandwich but the drink took forever. I spilled some of it trying to get back to where we were sitting. They put only like 2 ice cubes so the drink was warm quickly. While the sandwich was pretty good, I'd def never plan on eating or drinking inside here. Wish they would figure out some way for crowd control, like have the line half wait outside the cafe and then call people in when there is space. Lovely food, but very hectic. It may seem harsh to drop a 2/5 rating for a location with great food, but I attribute this to the hectic, claustrophobic and anxiety inducing atmosphere. What was once a special pleasure for my partner and I has turned into a negative experience where it's just not worth it anymore. I can get past the mayhem of trying to park in the undersized and packed parking lot, but the internal operation needs love from several angles - from speed of service to the seating experience. Either the seating area needs to expand into the vacant area next door or the seating should be removed entirely for a pick-up/ take-out operation or bar-height perimeter seating to allow for better flow. In many ways this bakery is trying to take on being a bakery and a brunch spot, which might be possible but not with the current configuration. On Saturday mornings especially it is overwhelming to come here, even as we have adjust our schedule to arrive earlier it seems as other have done so as well. The space gets jam packed with folks sitting down and even more so attempting to do take-out. I wish the bakery continued success, but the experience just isn't worth it for me with the claustrophobic atmosphere. For pies, I recommend the amazing eggplant burrata and short rib. For sit down foods - the hometown breakfast, the raspberry jam and bread are amazing.. I wish they sold the bread! For grab and go, they have an awesome two-for-twenty deal that includes 2 sandwiches, 2 iced/hot coffee, and 2 donuts or 1 cinnamon roll. For picky little ones, the plain bagel bomb is quite good (warmed up is best). I Don't recommend the BEC bomb at all sadly (very underwhelming experiencd). The grab & go 2-for-20 option was my last meal to enjoy here, unless something changes with the seating experience I don't anticipate coming back except for a pie to go. read more

Ordered two pies. Short Rib and a Chicken Pie. The instructions given for the Short Rib pie were 320 for 20 minutes. 2 and 1/2 hours later, in a wolf convection oven the pie was luke warm inside. Called and spoke with the owner who was beyond rude. She would not let me explain why I was dissatisfied, instead she talked over me rapidly in a loud tone. I spoke to the manager a week prior who told me the cooking instructions that I was given were incorrect. The owner upon hearing this told me she works for me and does not know the cooking instruction for their pies. I spent over $80.00 for 2 pies. The Chicken pie when served had absolutely no chicken in 2 of the slices. It was all potato. The owner scoffed and laughed when I told her this. I do not believe I have ever been treated so rudely by an owner of an establishment. From the reviews I have read here I see that I am not the only DISSATISFIED customer. I tried cheddar biscuit with over easy egg, pull pork, caramelized onions, white cheddar and smoked aioli. It was excellent ($7.50). Also worth trying are the savory pies. A detailed description of each can be found on the bake shop website, and with at least 48 hours notice you can schedule a specific pie to be available. Disclaimer: I went against the grain during my visit and picked up a lemon scone. It wasn't bad. Buttery and had a nice sugar-lemon glaze on top. But I wish it just had more lemon flavor to it. Even with a bit of lemon zest in the dough, once the frosted layer was finished, all you were left with was a plain scone. The lemon on top too, was an actual sliced lemon (so please don't eat that unless you're ready to pucker up). Ill be honest, I wasn't really impressed with my offering. Awful Experience -- Rude, Unaccommodating Management This was my second time at Hometown Bake Shop in Centerport, and both visits have been terrible. The first time, the wait for food was ridiculous. But today truly sealed the deal -- I'll never be back. I'm eight months pregnant and had just driven an hour home from a funeral. I stopped in because it's close to my daughter's school and I just wanted something simple -- a buttered roll or piece of bread. Nothing fancy, nothing unreasonable. The worker at the counter was very kind and clearly uncomfortable, but she explained that she wasn't allowed to sell me a roll because of the owner's "rules." Apparently, they "didn't have enough" -- whatever that's supposed to mean. They would have served me one if I ordered a sandwich- I think. Let me be clear: the employee was doing her best and was polite. The problem is the owner or whoever makes the decisions there -- someone who clearly doesn't understand customer service or basic decency. Refusing a paying customer a simple buttered roll, especially under the circumstances, is absurd and downright bad business. I won't be returning, no matter how convenient the location is. It's run by someone who's unaccommodating, inflexible, and out of touch with what it means to treat people kindly.
