I went there while I was on break from work. I work in Porterville, but we were in town for a few things, so we thought we'd try this place. I must say, it surprised me. The food was incredibly good and the staff was very polite. I ordered the pub burger, which came with a dill pickle, chips and a cookie. The burger was incredibly juicy and came on a ciabatta bun. The cookie was really good and soft. I wound up going back to the counter and ordering two chocolate thumbprint cookies to take home, but wound up eating them both before I left. Hometown Emporium lunch meals are the best you could find in Exeter. I could definitely say that they are known for their sandwiches. Their service is really good, I go there a few times a week. The people there are super nice, and they really treat you like family, you'll feel so comfortable once you go there more than twice. The reasons why I would rate this restaurant a four star is because; 1. Their food is amazing. 2. Their service there is very good. 3. Their decorations are very cute once you walk in the restaurant place. 4. They are super friendly. 5. Their service is fast, and what I mean by their service is fast is that you don't have to be waiting in line for a long time and also they give you your food as fast as they can. There is a lot of people that go there in the afternoon for lunch, it sometime gets crowded but they just take the people's order and make them quick so there won't be as much people in the restaurant. What I would usually get there is the students special. Which is a sandwich with a cookie and a free drink, and let me tell you their cookies are amazing! What I really like about Hometown Emporium is their bread and cookies is freshly baked which is really good, but I also have one can part about this place. The only thing I would not like about this place is they would sometimes miss spell my name or pronounce my name wrong. Over all I definitely like their sandwiches and cookies. The costing of your mean really depends on what you get. Like for me since I always get the student special it just cost me five bucks 30 cents, but it will definitely make you feel like it's worth your money. They also have cookies freshly baked, they don't really cost that much just for one cookie it's just 1 dollar for a really good delicious cookie, I would definitely recommend their sugar cookies, they're the best cookies! The texture and taste of the food is good. If you like to go to a fancy restaurant I would prefer to go to Black Bear Dinner because their food is just awesome there, it's a little pricey but it's worth it. We had the hot pastrami and Pancho Villa. Both sandwiches had fresh, soft bread and the meat was moist. Went well with the pickle. Pasta salad side was flavorful (artichoke hearts & roasted red pepper) and the cookies soft. read more

I have eaten here 4 times and three of the four were very disappointing. All the ingredients appear to be store bought. What I mean by that is your bread is basically wonder bread, the meat was sliced from processed loaves and the lettuce came out of a bag. Basically, it worse than the kind of sandwich I would make myself at home. Last time I was there I bought a salad for around $8 praying that it would at least be half as good as most other salads I purchase for the same amount elsewhere. I was disappointing to see it was made of bagged iceberg which was wilting and I couldn't even eat it. Every ingredient was a bagged item from the carrot shredding to the cheap ass dry cheese they use at taco bell. I called to complain and they offered me a replacement but I don't have the courage to go back. I get the feeling the hype regarding this place is it is owned by a well known local family or something because I hear over and over how good it is and it truly baffles me. Perhaps my standards are too high for the area I am and if so, God help me. read more

Exeter has a reputation for and is a small town and with that one ASSUMES that a small town, friendly atmosphere would be everywhere...and in most Exeter establishments it is. We have visited Hometown Emporium at least 6 times in the past 2 years and I haven't ever been greeted with a smile or a welcome. The faces there are familiar and I assume they are family or long-time employees. I am a very friendly person and like to smile and be a helpful customer, however there is nothing friendly coming from the other side of the counter. Today at noon, they were out of HAM, TURKEY and PROVELONE....they are a sandwich joint...how do you run out of your most popular meats and cheese? The lettuce added to my sandwich was BROWN and obviously shouldn't have been added to my sandwich by one of the unfriendly girls in back. Reading the other reviews, I agree whole heartedly that I could make the sandwich at home and smile while doing it. At least my family would get a smile across the table while biting into my ham or turkey sandwich. All the tables were cleared, but look and felt grimy. The owner looks like they'd like to try to make it cute, but It is too bad that is just a run down, grimy place that thought they'd better jump on the sandwich bandwagon to compete with the other, friendlier restaurants in downtown Exeter. We don't need to go back. We will go get a smile elsewhere. read more

I love Hometown! As a student at Exeter High School, I go to Hometown because it is the healthiest option we can get in a short distance for only $5 as our student special. The bread and ingredients in the sandwiches are always fresh and delicious. Students also have the option of having a salad instead or adding any of their homemade sweets. The furniture and atmosphere give you that hometown feel and there is always a friendly face to be seen. If you've never been to Exeter I suggest you visit Hometown at least once, and you'll be very satisfied. read more

I used Hometown Emporium for my wedding and they were AWFUL! Albeit the food was good but they were rude and did not go along with our plans that we had all talked about together. Brides, this will ruin your wedding day. The caterers arrived and began setting up with no problems. They sat out their serving tables with the linens but they put their tables in the middle of the dance floor and were the bridal party and my husband and I would make our entrance to the reception. So I had to go and move them myself because they LEFT and did not come back for over an hour later and did not have to courtesy to tell anyone they were leaving. When they came back Cassie told me that they did not bring enough beverage pitchers for all of our tables. She did the math in her head from the number of guests that could fit at each table (the max) instead of asking us so we were shorting our guests. They only do buttercream cakes not fondant. I had an outdoor wedding in summer and also went through them for my cake. I had talked to Cassie, the daughter who I had been working with from the begging, and asked her what we will do about the cake in the heat. She reassured me that they will bring it later in the day and keep it in their van with the AC to keep it cool. I also called the owner of the shop, her mom, and asked about the cake and she told me the same thing about bringing it later in the day. The week of the wedding my mom had to drop off fake sunflowers and burlap (to decorate my cake.) Originally the said they would provide burlap and two weeks before the wedding she changed her mind and said we had to buy it. Which wasn't a big deal. When my mom dropped off burlap my mom talked to Cassie again about them cake and heat and she was told once again they would bring it out later. They brought my cake out and set it up BEFORE THE CEREMONY STARTED. It melted and fell over. We had to plug in a small fan and point it on it so it wouldn't melt anymore. It ruined all the pictures of the cake cutting. Such a waste of money for someone going against their word. As far as their services, we told them our ceremony would start at 430, they agreed to be set up by 4. They tried rushing the wedding to start. She started complaining to my parents and my husband's parents that we needed to get going. We paid for their services and they complained at us? The ceremony started at 4:35, not bad at all. Then after when we went to take pictures, the caterers came, found my photographers and told them they needed to hurry up so they could serve everyone. We had set aside an hour for pictures after the ceremony and even finished early. I had given Hometown an outline of timeline for the wedding so they knew what everything would look like. They even found my husband and told him we need to hurry up, that the servers are just standing around. I paid $65 per server just to hand people food so if they had a little downtime, fine, I paid for that downtime. They offered to serve the head table and parents/grandparents. They served these people BEFORE we even entered the reception area. Our food was COLD. Brides, after all your hard work you don't want to sit own to cold food. When we went to cut the cake, the servers were supposed to immediately serve the sheet cake we ordered. It took them a long time before they started serving everyone. They started with the back first so our parents and grandparents were served last. This was non-traditional and rude. When I first started working with them they were really nice and responsive. After the first few meeting they were rude. They took my money, gave me a crappy service and left. I would NEVER recommend them to cater a wedding or any other event. VERY poor service and I was not satisfied one bit. Don't go with them if you want a smooth and peaceful wedding. read more
