Representing 2022 in alphabet series, O is for Oregon Dairy Country Restaurant. When I was visiting my parents at Christmastime 3 years ago, we went to Oregon Dairy's Restaurant. This is not to be confused with Oregon Dairy itself, which is the excellent 5-star ice cream stand connected to the grocery store, Oregon Dairy Market & the restaurant. We wanted to get a good heart meal. My dad & I opted for the buffet, and my mom got like a turkey sandwich or something. While I filled up with plenty of food, most of it was pretty mediocre, some was even weak. There were only a couple of things on the buffet I thought were very good. The buffet came with ice cream, which was the real highlight. My dad & I have similar ice cream tastes, and we both got peppermint ice cream, a good seasonal choice. I was conflicted about the rating here as the buffet section was small and the food was just fine, but the ice cream and the play area for the kids are great! We ended up wanting to try the breakfast/brunch buffet on a Sunday and it was fine. The highlight was the ice cream at the end of the meal - I got the mint and my husband got the vanilla with peanut butter. Both were delicious. The place definitely was busy on a Sunday, which was understandable because many if not all Amish places are usually closed on Sundays, but we never felt rushed. My son had a great time on the swing - they have a cool one where you can sit facing your little one :) He also just enjoyed running around the big space, looking at the animals, going on the slides and playing with the rocks. We came here early on a Sunday morning for breakfast. The first thing that caught my attention, was the man who seated us. He was extremely short with us, and seemed annoyed. I took notice as we sat there, and he was like this with every single table that he sat. This was not a great first impression! Our server Maddie was fantastic. My toddler enjoyed the French toast. I had a Mr. Sticky's cinnamon roll, which was good. Hostess was friendly, our waitress...not so much. Ample seating; booth and tables. We arrived during the lunch hour on a weekday so it wasn't busy; we got seated right away. Ordered a breakfast quesadilla. Way too much salsa in the quesadilla that you couldn't taste the bacon or eggs. No need to have extra salsa on the side. I wouldn't order that again. My husband's cheeseburger came out as requested; medium. No complaints from his side of the table. We had breakfast on a Sunday morning so it was a bit busy, but we were seated quickly. Our waitress was friendly and stopped by a few times to make sure we were good. My husband had the buffet which was ok. He didn't love the cream filled donut (obviously, some may love them). I had eggs Benedict which came with potatoes which I changed to fruit cup. I also got hot chocolate and a donut included in the $13 price...that's a good deal. I liked the eggs Benedict. The hollandaise sauce was plentiful, but it wasn't the best sauce I ever had. Just ok. I liked Oregon Dairy and will definitely come back again-I will order their based oatmeal next time. That is a 5 out of 5, IMO. read more

Great Pennsylvania Dutch Food. Good service and pleasant atmosphere. They have a buffet and salad bar. Prices are reasonable and I would say everyone could find something they would like. Stopped here because we learned there was a buffet. Both good and service was average. The food would have been better if the temperature on the hot buffet line was dialed back a bit. The high temperature dried out all of the food leaving it over cooked, dried out, and having a hard texture- including items like stuffing and macaroni and cheese. The hot food was a bit disappointing as a result. The high temperatures also heated up the plastic serving utensils so much that they were hot to the touch. The salad bar greens were fresh and crisp. Some items were depleted and not refilled quickly. The desserts were delicious and flavorful. I wish the healthier food options has as much effort placed into it as the ice cream and other desserts. Pricing is somewhat reasonable, but again we were a bit disappointed with the quality of the entree and hot bar so it would have been more acceptable if we could have enjoyed it a bit more. The bathrooms were well stocked, but less than what I expected clean wise. I was also surprised by an older man walking right into the woman's room. I blocked him from entering further and directed him across the way to the men's room. we had a luncheon for 16 there yesterday and was incredibly disappointed in the quality of the food. we had a someone order a taco salad which came out as nacho chips in a bowl with wilted spring mix lettuce, and hot chili on top, eww. the tomato bisque was spaghetti sauce in a bowl, certainly not tomato bisque, the salad bar consisted of days old brown lettuce and questionable other chopped items. the parmesan topped chicken was 2 tiny chicken breasts topped with melted american cheese and a sprinkle for bland panko crumbs. most everyone left food on their plates because it was not worth eating. The waitstaff barley checked on us except to hand over the bill. over $250.00 dollars later and we will not be back next year. read more

We were seated and a waitress took our order for drinks. We requested their Gerhart coffee. She returned with a carafe of coffee and we gave her our orders. I ordered the chicken croquettes and my husband ordered grilled cheeseburger on sourdough. The restaurant was fairly empty when we arrived but shortly after 5 more tables filled up. We watched as all 5 tables got their food...and we still didn't get ours. Then we watched as they began paying their checks...still no food or waitress at our table. We finally put down $6.50 for the coffee and left. And we definitely won't be back. And I need to add, that it was the worst coffee I've had since my military days. read more

I read all y'all's reviews. The good, the bad, the "good but __"... got all the info before I suggested this place to my folks as we met up in Lancaster. Everyone wanted to get out of the tourist congestion along Route 30, so heading just one exit north on Route 222 works! Easy to get here, just go in the downhill driveway and head on up the hill. When I got there, place was packed with all old faces. Hm. That often suggests a place that's "past its prime". I was also curious about all my friends ordering dishes. I came for the buffet. I pitched Amish buffet. No one else bought it. Anyway, here's the full rundown. * Ambiance: Cozy. Seven of us got a single round table but we actually fit fairly well, surprisingly. They are trying to maximize their space but, unlike the ones to the southeast, you won't have to wait an hour to sit. That's good. * Service: Slow. I think just too many tables to serve and not enough servers. On the plus side, that means cheaper food! But it took awhile to get our drinks served and place our orders. Food itself seemed to come out reasonably - I finished one plate from the buffet as an appetizer and the dishes for everyone arrived as I came back with the second plate. * Food: This is the hardest one to judge. I get that the buffet area is a bit small, choices a bit limited, and not a lot of "pure Amish" food greets the eye. However, I found one noodle-chicken dish that had Amish broad noodles inside and took a chance that would satisfy - it sure did. The roast? chicken parts actually had a significantly Amish flavor in the spices, so much that I came back for more. Very nicely done, cooked through but still tender throughout. There were a lot of different potato dishes, but the potato stuffing (bread dish) and the others all hit home. Truly comfort food. Only a couple of minuses, really. Not sure how much is homemade vs. imported - I don't trust the rolls for example, and the condiments (apple butter especially, but also the beef gravy?) are not done here. Most of the dishes are made in house though. The desserts were mostly gone by the time we arrived at 6:00 PM Saturday, and the few that were left didn't seem particularly homemade. I took a pair of gingerbread cookies and used them to scoop the single tap of ice cream you get with your buffet - which, by the way, was scooped huge to the size of the double scoops my friends got. Peppermint was all artificial colors, but my chocolate marshmallow was satisfying. This is a dairy restaurant and they do make good ice cream! Overall, is this place Amish? Probably not as much as the ones on Route 30, but I wouldn't say it's "not Amish". I'm satisfied with this choice and I think my friends all enjoyed their "normal American" dishes. We have been long time customers of the Oregon Dairy Restaurant over the years however it had been a while since we were there and decided to stop by. We had occasionally (maybe once a year) ordered liver and onions and did so that day. Not a dish for everyone I know but they had always prepared it perfectly. The onions would be sautéed just right and the liver cooked through but this time....nope. The onions were closer to raw than sautéed and the liver was red inside (yuck!). I'm guessing that with the relatively new ownership there must have been significant turnover in the kitchen as it was obvious from what was placed on our table that they didn't know what they were doing. The service was also noticeably very slow as well. Maybe staffing was reduced by new management too? Unfortunately any time the word "yuck" appears in a review only 1 star can be assigned. It's worth noting that WE HAD MANY MANY 4 & 5 STAR MEALS THERE IN THE PAST and I'm sure we'll give them another try some day to see if they can do better but it's not likely to be anytime soon. Ordered a mushroom and spinach omelet that was flavorless. The mushrooms were put into the omelet with heating them. Also seated behind a a group with a child that refused to listen to their father. What could be better then fresh ice cream on a hot humid day?! Huge selection of flavors to choose from with over 30 flavors available. Pricing is decent for the amount you get. I started coming to this place as a child. My grandpa would come for breakfast every Sunday and I would often tag along. Still looks the same, still has the same great service, same decor and Lancaster County classics. I normally get the baked oatmeal, it's probably my favorite menu item. This morning I changed it up and went for the breakfast buffet. I'm kinda picky about how my breakfast items are prepared/cooked, so unfortunately I left feeling underwhelmed. Other than the bacon, I didn't eat anything was stellar. You're surely paying for an "all you can" and not quality. For $10, who's to complain though. You have your eggs, french toast, bacon, sausage, hash browns and a good ole Lancaster County favorite - scrapple. If you've never had scrapple, I recommend you try it. You'll either love it or hate. Some eat it with ketchup or jam/jelly, but this Lancaster County girl is not a fan. read more

Service was horrible. Waitress seemed to flip like a switch and was suddenly nasty. It was my husband, me and my 3 year old. Just order plain food and nothing crazy nor special requests. The French toast was disgusting but I didn't even mention anything. She was already a B****. I got the check and was just going to give her a horrible tip. But then the cashier tried charging me a different amount. (Tax was included and I was paying cash so not affected by the credit pay surcharge.) Tip was not included. My total was 30.17, gave her a $50 and she tried to give me 17 and change back. I pointed out the error and she was instantly a bitch too. I work in the food service Industry and these girls deserve shit tips and I hope they can't make ends meet. Oregon restaurant and the grocery store are now on my boycott list. Too bad. It's hard to say more about the ole Oregon Dairy that hasn't been said. For me, it's another trip down memory lane and it's a place my wife (from out of town) actually requests we stop at almost every time we're in town to visit family. And we come back, not just for nostalgia, but great food, friendly service and a pleasant and enjoyable experience! It's just like you remember, just a little more updated. But some recipes never changed! Pros: This place hasn't changed in the maybe ~20 years it's been Oregon Dairy 2.0. That was the last overhaul (I think). I'm sure Oregon Dairy 3.0 will be just as great for the next 20. The famous foods here are famous for a reason. The baked oatmeal is a delicious and incredibly inexpensive meal. Pro tip: Don't forget to confirm the customization of toppings, milks, and temperatures. My mom prefers her milk cold, but I like to have OD warm mine up in the winter. Neither of us goes for the whole milk anymore. Other favorites include the ham balls and turkey croquettes (for dinner). Every big breakfast is served with a small glass of milk (your choice) and a glazed doughnut. It's certainly an extra 400 calories, but it's kinda sweet! Service is always incredibly sweet and fast here and they frequently have extra busers busing tables after you finish. It's still diner style, so you pay up front but at least they now accept tips on cards so you don't have to run back to the table. Price is perhaps ever so slightly higher than some other options, but generally fair. Some items are incredibly inexpensive. It's right next to the store and easy to walk in w/o going inside. You enter through the gift shop! Cons: At any busy time, there's usually a wait. Less so at dinner time, but certainly breakfast after about 10am is usually very busy and you often wait up to 30 minutes for a table (depending on group size). The traditional staple foods are fairly average for Lancaster County. They won't screw up your sandwich, but don't expect to be blown away. Other notes: The (breakfast) buffet is a great way to sample many local and OD famous favorites and the regular buffet is the same for dinner. However, most of the staples are unspecial and are similar to other buffet quality foods. I generally think the buffet is an overpriced gorging experience that I usually avoid unless I'm really hungry. The place also feels like a retirement home. I regularly bring the average age down several years when I walk in. However, most of the staff ranges from middle aged (regular servers) to barely 15 (busers and cashiers). Conclusion: It's like home for me. Come to OD for local favorites and their own recipes, including baked goods. Stay for the service! Skip the buffet and anything you can get elsewhere! We loved this place! So much that we had 2 consecutive breakfasts here. We sat in the outdoor area, due to COVID, and it was nice. On our second morning it was very chilly, so they moved the heat lamp next to us and we weren't cold at all. Our waitress was so nice to us. If you like a big breakfast, you'll get it here. I loved that coffee/tea are included, PLUS they bring everyone a donut and milk, in addition to your meal. I had omelets both days, which were stuffed with cheese. The hash brown was more to my liking than the potatoes. The side of scrapple was wonderful (of course). My daughter liked the french toast one day and waffle the next. How is it that I've lived here my whole life and didn't know what all Oregon Dairy offers?!? There's a grocery store, animals you can feed and pet, a playground with bounce pillow, a fake cow you can milk, a greenhouse in season, a full service restaurant, an ice cream shop, and a snack bar...am I missing anything? Oh yeh, they have a gift shop too! I was WOWED by this place after someone recommended I take my granddaughter here, and she loved it! Normally we drive a good 40 minutes to The Pretzal Hut for good food and animal interaction when we have her, but this place will definitely be in our rotation. She loved the playground, animals, and the bounce pillow. Sadly the cow was all milked out at the time of our visit. The greenhouse was an ample size and she loved picking some annuals for her little garden. We dined at the restaurant unaware that they had a buffet until we entered. Again total score as the food was delicious. Not as many choices as some of the other area buffets but the quality seemed home cooked. The beef stew was by far my favorite as well as the chocolate cake with peanut butter icing - very much like my mom makes. The buffet comes highly recommended! My only grips were the lack of fresh vegetables (especially since this is a farm) as I would have loved to see a brussel sprout au gratin or some fresh asparagus. The ham ball were also a miss with me but everything else was spot on. Unbeknownst to us the buffet includes some of their ice cream (in flavors not normally offered) and when we were too full to eat it there they offered to send it home with us. How often does a buffet do that?!? The dining room was also clean and decorated in a country/farm motif that was very fitting. Service was above average. A Lionel train ran above the buffet and my granddaughter was delighted when it went thru the tunnel and came out the other side. I could see this place being huge with tourists if it was located in Strasburg or Paradise but thankfully it's not so us locals get to keep it for ourselves. Did I mention how convenient it was to just walk to the adjoining grocery store to get cat food while we were out? Overall the grocery store is smaller and I didn't have time to really scope it out but from what I did see the selection was decent and prices in line with Giant or Weis and they offer there own loyalty card for additional discounts. Plus a bagger at EVERY cashier, when did you ever see that at Giant? This is definitely a place I will be visiting more often. read more
