We are so happy with our house, thanks to Homeworks! Communication was always clear, every person on the team was dedicated to make this a quality experience for us. We were even impressed by the subcontractors, which showed us that Homeworks cares about who they work with. Our selections specialist, initial project manager and architect were so patient, kind and understanding as we made initial changes. Our construction project manager stayed in touch and met with us regularly, our master carpenter was amazing, and the whole team made us feel valued. The quality of workmanship was excellent, down to fine details. If there were changes that had to be made, the team worked with us to make it happen as quickly and efficiently as possible. Homeworks Construction did a complete rebuild on our home plus built an 800 square foot ADU. We had an excellent experience with them, and highly recommend them if you are looking for professional, high quality, beautiful work done within the contracted time. We needed a company that could help us from start to finish with permitting, design, and building.   We had gotten quotes from 5 other construction companies but decided on Homeworks because we really liked Heather Hickox, who came to our house to look at the place, listened to our ideas and she gave us great ideas too. She spent time with us and was very helpful and friendly and gave us a good impression of the company and what they had to offer. We also liked the fact that they drafted a drawing along with giving us a quote at a later meeting and that the quote was reasonable given the scope of work.   Planning and permitting took the longest time, but that was due to covid times and delays with DPP, not Homeworks fault. Once demolition occurred, everything went quickly, smoothly, according to plan, and was often ahead of schedule! From demo to completion, everything took about 9 months. They planned and ordered things ahead of time to avoid delays. We are extremely happy with the way it all looks and turned out.   Everyone we worked with throughout the process was professional and knowledgeable in their area and stage of the project. Bob did a great job with the demo, Cody had great creative ideas and helped with the planning (David as well who is no longer with Homeworks), Elyse and Sean designed our dream kitchen and bathrooms that came out amazing, Marc Dawson was our project manager and made sure everything was coordinated and done according to schedule and in a timely manner, Marlon did a nice job of putting together details at the end of the project,  and most of the subcontractors were friendly and professional. Janelle doing the admin side of things in the office is on top of things and very responsive. The owners Marshall and Silvio took the time to speak to us and problem solve when questions arose. I never met the architect personally but love the design of the house. Tried getting simple quotes for different jobs at my house. They came out and said no problem. When they sent the quote they only gave one and said it's all or nothing. It also was an outrageous price. I could have had a whole new house built for the price they gave me. I'm no fool to how much things cost. I'm a jack of all trades just don't have the time to do it myself. Lied to me in person. Shame on this company. This review is based on Homeworks as a company and not work performed. I had been trying to work with Homeworks to do a rebuild of my house over 5 years ago. However things did not go my way at all. Heather sat by as I constantly tried to get figures nailed down for a budget and I ended up going dark for about 2 years. Then in 2023 I thought I had things figured out and was finally able to get some work done. But as luck has it Oahu is expensive and my budget was way too low to do half of what I wanted to do. Unfortunately I could not get the work done by Homeworks but I do appreciate their follow thru with keeping in contact and trying to help me get what I wanted done. read more

We just signed our contract with Homeworks and are super excited! Our home remodeling journey began a few months back. Initially we thought we would manage the project on our own, but quickly realized that coordinating a remodel of our magnitude would not be so straightforward--particularly on top of juggling work, children and other responsibilities. We were stuck. Luckily, we read about Homeworks Construction online and placed a call. Within days Marshall and Jon came to our property for a walkthrough. The following week, they proposed a plan of action and provided a quote. Homeworks is a one-stop-shop with architectural, engineering, design and construction talent under one roof. Which means that we won't have to worry about vetting vendors, coordinating schedules or attaining permits. I called into KHVH radio show when Jim Byxbee of HomeworksHawaii was on with Rick Hamada. I talked to him about building an addition to the back of my house and he sounded all helpful and told me to call the office and they would send someone out to take a look. That day I called their office and was told someone would call me back regarding my project. After 5 days John Z. finally returned my call. I explained that I wanted to build an addition to the back of the house and one of the first things he asked was what my budget was. When I told him I didn't really have one, but was hoping to keep it under $100,000, he told me that Homeworks doesn't even mess with projects that small. I was disappointed that they wouldn't even come out to the house for a consultation, and feel that they have gotten to big and non longer have the small company attitude like they used to. John Z referred me to another contractor John G. and I called him but never received a call back. Mr. Byxbee, if you read this, your either a fraud on the radio or you no longer have an idea what going on within the company. The funny thing is, I would actually be willing to spend more than $100,000 if they would have come out and done a proper estimate and showed me options and gone thru the costs with me. The company is about average overall for a home construction or remodel contractor. Don't think they want to bother unless it is new construction or a huge remodel. Marshall came in first to see what I wanted done and was very nice. Caleb started out nice enough, but once they started falling behind schedule he became defensive and combative if asked when they might complete the job. One item they could not finish on time because the part had not been shipped and that wasn't their fault. But there were several unrelated projects they could have gone ahead, finished but they just disappeared for about 10 days and left that stuff unfinished until the part for the other project arrived. There was a wood section that was left unfinished after they said they were all done. Caleb himself begrudgingly came back to finish it. It still wasn't completely finished after his visit so I just gave up. One shorter guy who works with them repeatedly took food and beverages out of our refrigerator without asking. The really bad thing is that he does not wash his hand after he goes to the bathroom. I know because I listened and waited more than once when I was there while they were working. This same guy is apparently just a helper. I heard one of the others trying to show him how to do something. The trainer told him he would show him how to do it but was not going to do it for him. I don't want someone doing on-the-job training during my project, work that I am paying a good amount to have a PROFESSIONAL do. This same helper guy starts running around shouting "Oh suuuuuu!!!!!" when he is told he has done work incorrectly. Don't know what that means. The hot and cold water lines were reversed in two of the sinks and had to be corrected. I overheard 2 of the employees talking about it. These guys were unhappy because Caleb had gotten onto them for reversing the hot and cold. One of them said to the other that they are not plumbers, and he was right-they were not plumbers, they did woodworking, carpentry and other types of work. So why wasn't a plumber doing the plumbing work? Kudos to the cabinet maker employee for his excellent work. I watched him work to repair a cabinet that had accidentally been damaged. He was amazing and obviously had been doing it for years. Wish all of their employees were that skilled. Also some employees blast music from their radios. I turned it down one time when I was present because it was so loud. A few minutes later one of them turned it way up again IN MY HOUSE. Rude. I need more remodeling done on a property but don't know where to turn. read more

We've had an absolutely positive building experience with this professional team. Every step of the way Marc Dawson and Elyse Grable were professional, prompt and resourceful. All members of the build team were exceptional in the quality of their workmanship and skill. Their fees were not only reasonable but very flexible working with in our budget. Homeworks build a master bedroom addition, extended our back deck and remodeled the previous master into a tv/media room. The workmanship of the remodel was excellent. The home inspector on purchasing the home reported that Homeworks used quality materials and didn't skimp on building materials. Something to do with the large beams and construction materials are top notch. We are super happy with the quality and workmanship of Homeworks. Everything was permitted and approved. Here is the real reason I give Homeworks five stars. About two years later after we purchased the home we get a call from Homeworks stating that on inspection of a neighbor's home, the Dept. of Permitting and Planning inspector questioned that our deck was too close to the property line and may be within the required setback. Homeworks, which was listed on the permitting documents, voluntarily came to check it out. There was no compliant filed or any official request from the city to do so. As it turns out, our deck was within our property's setback by about six inches. Note, this is WITHIN our own property completely and having to do with rules on structures being a certain distance from the property line. Homeworks handled this proactively with the sole goal of rectifying the issue. Marshall was courteous, forthcoming and responsive to all our questions and concerns. Homeworks took care of the situation 100% by proactively applying and paying for the variance and also providing a new property survey. In the end the city does not like to give out variances so they required us to modify the deck by 6 inches. Homeworks completed all the work. It was a silly modification; nonetheless, it was approved by the city. In the meanwhile we had hired a lawyer for consultation. After all was completed, Marshall offered to pay our lawyer's fees, which was awesome. When it comes to construction contractors, I recommend Homeworks for their honesty, integrity and proactive approach to customer service. read more

Our home was built in 1952 and with a few minor remodels along the way we decided it was time to bring our house into the 21st century. We knew immediately what contractor we wanted to use and that was Homeworks Construction, Inc. We had worked with them 12 years ago on another project and had nothing but good memories. Sure enough they made what could have been an overwhelming experience nothing but simple and easy. All along the way we were provided with a time line and they came in on time even with some of our change orders affecting it. They provided architectural help as well as everything needed in the way of cabinetry, lighting, plumbing parts and flooring, all in house. Heather was our go to gal, she was on property almost every day, and available to answer questions with a smile on her face. All the subs were polite and did great work. The house was constantly cleaned up and trash removed on a regular basis. The result was amazing, we couldn't have asked for more. We ordered our Wellborn kitchen cabinets through Homeworks and our Durasupreme kitchenette and 5 vanities through another company. The Wellborn cabinets molded and the Durasupreme still haven't. I was told I should hire someone to check it out, basically you're on your own by both Wellborn and Homeworks. Seems like companies that stood behind their product would have wanted to send someone to check it out. Along with continued poor communication and unnecessary delays this was a very frustrating experience. read more

A little over 4 years ago, Homeworks built our home in Kaimuki. We researched the top 5 residential construction companies on island and met with most of them. We decided to sign with Homeworks because they were able to share detail of the process, quality of work and were very responsive in answering our millions of questions. (Big thanks to Kim Green) They did a demo of the old house and built the new house and worked with us every step of the way. The quality of work was great! We had a couple of issues working with our PM, however, Marshall and Sylvio (owners) were so amazing and exceeded expectations in their follow through. They take pride in their work and understand the importance of customer service! In the past month, we needed some repairs to be done in our home. Being that Homeworks built our home, we reached out to them. Like family, Sylvio stopped by within a day to do an assessment and the repairs were completed by their team in 2 weeks. Amazing! The thing that makes Homeworks stand out is the customer service by the owners and the relationship that they have with their clients. It can be years later and they still treat you like family, take care of you and make sure you're happy with the work they did. Great people, great work! After several months of regularly visiting properties with a realtor and actively searching I finally found an absolutely fantastic property that I was very excited about buying but I wanted to make sure that building a house on it would be affordable and that it was possible to build there. I called Homeworks Construction and spoke with them and they seemed enthusiastic about the idea and told me that someone would call me back with more details and so that I could get a quote on a price and also information about whether or not the lot was buildable. They never called me back so I called them additional times and also emailed them. Each time I contacted them Homeworks Construction made it sound like they were going to imminently give me answers to my questions and could potentially build the house. This meant that they strung me along for weeks and never gave me an answer and now today someone else bought that amazing property so now it is impossible for me to get it. If they didn't want to build a house for me or could not do so for some reason than Homeworks Construction should have been upfront and just said that instead of wasting my time. If they actually were going to build it then they should have given me an answer in a timely fashion. To say this experience has been extremely frustrating is an understatement. I was very ready and excited to buy that property and would have done so in a heartbeat had these people provided the service that they said they would provide. I do not recommend this company. Their behavior was very unprofessional! Ironically, I could have given Homeworks Construction repeat business had they actually built the house. The lot I was interested in buying had enough space for three houses. I wanted to start off building one and then if everything went well build the other ones later and I actually said that in my conversations with them. One would think that they would want business but the way they behaved certainly isn't the way to achieve that! read more

It takes you only a day to respond to a yelp review yet you did not respond to any one of six phone calls over the past 4 weeks as a follow up to what you committed to do (having someone come out and look at my roof). If you were as concerned as much with returning phone calls and honoring your word to me as you are in protecting your yelp reviews we would not be here. Because you have chosen this avenue as the only avenue to communicate I will oblige and respond in kind. I will let the reader decide who is petty. Your representation of what was said is not factual. Our conversation took place 4 weeks ago. I remember it well. You likely do not remember it well based on the time distanced you have created since our last conversation. Questions: If you chose not to respond to me and yet sent someone out to look at my roof (three weeks later after multiple follow up calls by me), he did not get on the roof. You can not see the damage to my roof from the ground. Why did whoever you sent out to look at my roof not notify me so that he could actually look at my roof? i.e. get on ladder and properly view the damage. Why did your receptionist call me with the alleged findings to my roof? I had follow up questions that she could not possibly answer. I asked to speak in person with the person who came by and saw my roof (from the street I assume). She could not tell me who came by. I asked how he viewed my roof. She could not say. She was nice and I feel sorry that she was placed in middle of a conversation that she should not have ever been placed. She did say that she would get back to me. That did not happen. Did you have a hidden agenda in sending someone out to view my roof other than providing assistance to me as I thought was the spirit of what you committed to? A message to any reader of this post. I will take true pictures of the roof that is at issue for anyone to see. Any reader can see these pictures in the future. I will let the reader then decide if he/she thinks that is the way a roof should look less than 11 years after it was constructed. This business is doing extremely well. You are not worth their time if you don't spend over $100k.

In the past, we have used other reputable contractors who we thought to renovate one house and built another house that was a nightmare! This time as we built our home in Manoa, we asked many friends in the business for referrals. We wanted to use a company who cared about their reputation, a design build that would make it an easier process and they gave us what we wanted. We had many meetings in the conference rooms with (which I thought was very effective) either with Peter, who helped us with the plans and contract, my project manager Heather who was so easy to work with and there every step of the way, my kitchen and bathroom designer Sean who was so detailed oriented, the architect (sorry, I can't remember his name!) who listened to all our thoughts and ideas, Tessy, the finance lady who is so organized and kept us on track and Marshall, one of the owners who we felt just pulls it all together. Lori, the front receptionist was always friendly and made us comfortable. One thing that we just couldn't believe was that they gave us a calendar showing what was going to be done everyday starting from the demolition of the old house, to what was being done everyday, to the final walk thru date. Can you believe they were only one week late and that was because we made a change! And we came on budget except of the changes which is to be expected. Their men came to work everyday and kept the place clean and tidy during construction. All in all, they were very easy to work with, very professional and actually made it fun and exciting! If there was an issue, they fixed it. We are very happy with our 2 story house and have recommended Homeworks to several of our friends. read more

Through my experience with this company I will not recommend to friends and family. They have poor management and workmanship.

I've worked with Homeworks on two projects and have a good experience both times. Tim did an excellent job of working with me to understand my vision and developed accurate estimates with appropriate allowances for my needs. At times I went over the allowances and sometimes my choices came in under. When I went over, the Homeworks group made sure that I knew that my choice was more than budgeted and I made my decision with that in mind. Sean is a great designer and gave me the kitchen of my dreams. Three years later, I still love it and get many compliments from friends and neighbors. Healther was my project manager and she is a wonderful person with great ideas who goes the extra mile to make her customers happy. One piece of advice that I can offier: Homeworks is a large firm and during the various phases of your project you will work with various Homeworks employees and also subcontractors. It is important for you to communicate clearly with each person who works on your project. Used Homeworks for a design/build project and they worked very well with us. Gave suggestions, comments and very flexible. Project finished on time and they supported us even after completion. The entire project and process was not 100% perfect but who can guarantee that? As long as they support their work and us, what can one ask for? We renovated our 2 bedroom/2 bath condo and worked well with the project coordinator, design team and construction manager. Tim walked us through the contract, explaining the process. Sean did a fantastic job in designing and drafting our new kitchen/dining area and bathrooms (new walk-in shower). Sarah was great in assisting us in the selection of our materials, lighting, cabinets, flooring & fixtures. Heather kept the project going and any concerns and issues were taken care of promptly. One major "hiccup" was when we discovered about a week before we were scheduled to move back home that our special order carpet wasn't ordered by the vendor on time and therefore had not been delivered. This was a huge problem as we had made arrangements to move out of our temporary housing and our furnishings were to be delivered from storage. Marshall personally called the company and we made another selection which was delivered/installed within a few days and we were able to move back home as scheduled. Homeworks employees and their sub-contractors (plumbing, electrician, flooring) were great and we are very happy with the outcome and our "new" home. We have and will continue to refer our friends to Homeworks Construction. read more

Above all, I felt assured through the entire process that if something were to 'change' or 'pop up' on Homeworks behalf, Homeworks would promptly remedy the situation. This is a long overdue review but my experience is almost exactly the same as Hiroko's (see her review) and with the same Homeworks employee too. George said he was going to meet us at our newly purchased home on Friday August 26th at 4 pm (I have the email to prove it). I was there at exactly the agreed upon time and made sure to adjust my work schedule (I'm a very busy doctor and work late hours) to ensure I made it on time. He called my cell phone 30 minutes past the appointment time to let me know that he could not make it as he was stuck in "traffic" and then he rescheduled for Tuesday the following week. I was back on Tuesday at the agreed upon time but George never showed up. Not even a call from him to cancel or to say he was running late. I waited for at least an hour in my newly purchased house before heading back to my old house where i was staying at that time. I continued to wait for a call from him as it would have been quick drive in case he was running late but I never got a call back. In fact, I had never heard from George or Homeworks Construction since. Needless to say, I was not going to call them back and give them my business anymore after this experience. With a work ethic like that, it is a wonder why they are still in business. Maybe it's from all the advertising they do. read more

We hired Homeworks in 2012 to build a two story, free standing addition on our property. The project went well, particularly in the following areas: on budget, on time, great quality of work. I really appreciated our project manager, Heather's, abilities, and I also really liked the work of Mario, the firm's architect. Because our project was design/build, it felt good knowing we had some degree of cost control. I also felt that Homeworks was really patient with us when we were trying to cut costs/make the project fit our budget, as their estimator was willing to answer a million questions like, "would we save any money if we decided to...?" (which was probably annoying.) The project has been complete for nearly a year now and we are very happy with the outcome. Some stressors we experienced, and which we told Homeworks, were that the segue between the initial salesperson phase to the project manager/project commencement phase, did not go well in our opinion. We felt that our salesperson implied things would go a certain way and they didn't, and we finally realized that few of our communications with him were documented and passed forward to the project manager. (just the contract, which wasn't representative of everything he had told us) What I would recommend in the future would be to document conversations with the salesperson with notes or emails and ask that that be attached as an exhibit to the contract to make sure you are covered. ( I would also ask for a detailed cost breakout of the project from the estimator, not just the per phase breakout that is in the contract.) Regardless of all of this, I am greatful to Homeworks for building our addition. It makes us happy, and they are good people. read more

We have a beautiful new house in place of our ratty 70+ year old beach shack, built in 5 months from the day excavation of old house was done. Design and permits and scheduling took 14 months total. Being in a flood zone we had lots of permitting issues and Homeworks did a great job of getting everything done to comply with code, which is one of the best things about this company, when you need extra work from architects, engineers,etc. they will get it done right. Also all of their sub-contractors, vendors, etc. are held accountable for their work and when there is a problem having the oversight of Homeworks will get results. All of their Project Co-ordinators, Managers, Designers, etc. handle a full plate of many ongoing projects, so you do need to be involved, keep consistent notes backed up by e-mails of your meetings, what was discussed and what was agreed upon. There will always be glitches in this business but Homeworks will do the best they can to fix things and make you happy.We are happy with the price paid, our new house and would definitely hire them again. We know they are worth it because we paid a previous company/contractor mid -5 figures before we realized how bad they were, leaving us with a gutted house, permitting problems and a high 6 figure price to remodel the old house. Homeworks gave us a brand new house and so much more at a better price for which we are truly grateful and pleased with. read more
