I needed to install a carport for my truck and after contacting another company with less than satisfactory response, I decided to try KunkelWorks. The response was immediate. Within a day Karol came over to discuss my situation and provide an estimate. My only concern was the timeframe which was going to be about two months because they get all of their inventory from Japan. Karol thought that they might have my selection in their warehouse though and would let me know. Luckily for me, they did have it on-island and the installers had an opening the next week! Requested a quote, but was basically that they were too busy to send someone to quote. However, if I took measurements, took pictures, and gave a detailed description of what I wanted, they might reconsider sending someone. I realize my job was relatively small but what a way to make someone feel insignificant. We had called KunkelWorks to get an estimate for a patio cover in our garden area. It's a small area but we thought the look of KunkelWorks patio cover would be perfect for this area since it's not too intrusive. Scott came over to take measurements and give us an estimate. His answers were very vague & said he would send me an estimate & pictures of how our patio cover will look. Scott sent the email, but his estimate was way more than we expected. He took measurements for a mini "bike" cover for our garden and his estimate was $5,100, Scott wrote fence & gate? $2,500 for delivery to site. Scott called this cover a Rafter Span 12' x 9'. Then he will refer us to someone that will help us obtain a permit for the patio cover! My husband calls him back to go over the email & he straight out tells my husband "you just can't afford it!" Would any consumer spend money blindly on a home improvement project & not understand the service & product? Scott needs to be schooled on how to treat customers! Beware of this company. The prices for replacement materials are extremely high, particularly in light of the fact that their products come from Japan and the yen is at an all time low against the dollar. But, the assumption is that specialized materials for their deck roof support structures (or structures similar to theirs) are very complex, specialized, etc. and therefore premium priced. That is, one thinks that they can't be sourced anywhere else so you have to pay the price - over $5k for 15 polycarbonate panels covering about under 400 square feet of structure. Then, their installer charges an incredibly high fee, but by this time, one is already committed to the materials and the assumption is that the job must be fairly complicated. However, it took the installer about 10 hours (2 people) and the charge was over two-thousand. So although finding replacement panels for this type of structure (a deck roof) is difficult, spend more time shopping than I did so you don't feel like you paid way too much for the end result . read more

After discovering that KunkelWorks only deals with exterior Japan aluminium products (carports, gates,etc) and not suited to our needs, he gave his comments and recommendations to refurbish the entire railing and mahogany handrails (clean, sand, paint) because of its excellent condition, sturdiness and safety features. Called them on October 11th to get an estimate on an aluminum gate. They asked me to send them the dimensions of my current (rusty) gate that was to be replaced. They also asked for photos of the front and back of the current gate and nearby area. I sent all that to them the same day. Never heard back from the guy ever again. A week later a woman called me back and asked if anyone had called me back. I said no. She said she would look into it. I have never heard back from them again. Very good experience, My first contact with Kunkelworks was at a August 2016 BIA show at Neal S Braisdell Center where I was attracted by the very esthetic look and high quality of the anodized aluminum products from Japan. Our new house under construction needed several Fences and Gates. Right after I called , Scott took the time to visit the job site and spent 3 hours going thru a huge catalogue showing the breath and versatility of the products sold by Kunkelworks. Once our needs were better defined, Maggie was very prompt to submit a quote for 4 gates and 2 fences with a price and delivery which met our needs.
