    On Chou with garlic

First time ordering carry out here, although I visited in person with my mother years ago. We ordered fried pork intestine, beef chow fun (not pictured), roasted duck (not pictured), on choy with garlic, and Szechuan eggplant. The pork intestine brought back childhood memories. Everyone had their favorite, and I was really satisfied with the beef chow fun. The service was friendly and swift. We placed the order, and the food was ready when we arrived. Inside was bright and clean. In addition to a small parking lot, there are plenty of street parking spaces on Winthrop and Argyle.

My girlfriend and I stopped by Hon Kee after shopping at our favorite grocery store, Tai Nam. Since she had been here before, she highly recommended we stop by for lunch and it did not disappoint! For my first visit, I ordered the BBQ Duck & Chicken with Rice & Broccoli, while she got the BBQ Pork & Duck. Words can't describe how incredible the meal was! The duck was perfectly tender, packed with rich flavor, and had just the right amount of saltiness to complement the savory sauce. Every bite was absolutely delicious. To top it off, the fresh smoothie I tried was so refreshing and smooth--the perfect way to complete the meal. Hon Kee is a must-try for anyone craving authentic, flavorful BBQ in Chicago's Vietnamese Town. We'll definitely be back!

Been going to this place for over 30 years even after they moved to a bigger and modern place. Family owned, best chinese food in Argyle area of Uptown for classic comfort foods like Special soups, lechon , roast ducks and rice dishes. Service is always great with Randy and others, owners are always around, parking is always available. Modern place , clean well lighting even with chandeliers, must go to when in Uptown

I ordered the rice plate with roasted duck, soy sauce chicken and roast pork, the meats were good, but the white rice was a bit mushy. It does come with some veggies almost like bok choy but maybe a different type? The workers spoke Cantonese so that was nice! The wait wasn't too long for pick up. I'd have to try something different next time, maybe a noodle dish.

Peking Duck - 3 Course Meal

Absolutely delicious! They serve Peking duck (comes with a soup, vegetables or fried rice for extra). All of the food reminds me of home. There's a ton of seating too which is a plus. The duck is pretty comparable to Sun Wah close by, and there's a ton of other options on the menu for tasty Chinese dishes. Service is meh, but the food makes up for it.

Still my favorite Chinese restaurant in the Argyle area. Love their roasted duck, ask for the green sauce to go with it, it's extra but delicious.

The prices at Hon Kee are much better and more affordable in comparison to Sun Wah. They also have a parking lot which is helpful. I personally love ordering their Duck over rice dish which pairs really well with their potstickers as an appetizer. The service on the other hand was a tad slow since they did not have a lot of servers. The ambiance is good for family gatherings or a meal with a date. I would recommend coming and trying their Asian bbq meats.

My friends have come to this restaurant for years and has been their go to restaurant for roast duck, chicken, and roast pork. You'll see them hung by the glass. The dining area is big with huge chandeliers. Many round tables that can accommodate large parties. Perhaps even a wedding.

    House Style Spare Ribs

Came here probably over 10mins now. Always try a couple new things with something classic Salt&pepper smelt fish: do not try this for take out. Only good if you eat it fresh out of fried pot. Gets super tough when it's cold House style spare ribs: not what I expected to be. I thought it's going to be rib with the bone, but it's just lean pork meat. Flavor is good. A bit sweet and chasiu flavor. Better eat it the second day when all the flavor's in it. However it takes a long time so be prepared to wait The other old classics's still good and cheap

Wonton Noodle Soup + 1/4 a duck to share

I have a bit of a soft spot for this place since my dad and I frequent this place often for lunch. We've been going here even when they were at their smaller location. Our go-to has always been the wonton noodle soup and splitting a 1/4 order of duck. We also usually order some siu yuk or roasted duck to go to take home. The wonton noodle soup is solid. Won't be beating anything from like... Guangzhou/Hong Kong, but it'll get the job done. They actually have a decently large menu with a bunch of standard Chinese dishes. I haven't tried their Peking Duck, but I've seen it and it actually looks really good. I would 100% pick it over Sun Wah just based on my experience with the other Chinese bbq meats I've had from here versus Sun Wah. The other Chinese bbq meats like siu yuk and char siu are also really solid. Personal fav is siu yuk, nice crispy skin and solid meat-to-fat ratio. Roasted duck also good. Service is fine. Can be a bit slow when it's busy just because they're a pretty light/semi understaffed crew, but you'll get your order. Ambiance is.. interesting because there's like a fake chandelier / almost banquet style seating even though there's a literal Chinese bbq butcher area at the corner of the restaurant. Definitely have a good amount of tables for bigger groups, too. I often see a bunch of older Chinese people drinking tea and eating lunch at one of them when I go. Very wholesome. Definitely worth checking this place out if you're looking for wonton noodles, Peking duck, or just general Chinese bbq stuff (char siu, siu yuk, etc).

Been here way too many times for this to remain a 4 star review. The food remains consistently good and the service, well, it's friendlier than most but it's a rather large dining area and the customers really like this place - so what I'm trying to say is - you have to be aggressive in flagging down your server. You might want to bring a red scarf or a little Nordstrom Rack flag to stick up, in case you want some more tea. I personally like the crab Rangoon, their beef chow fun, and Chinese broccoli. Most of all, I'd say that I like the owner. You see, the old Honkee was an old school restaurant, nothing fancy but this newer restaurant is over the top with the high ceilings and brighter atmosphere. The owner reinvested and his American dream, well it really shows. The food is consistently good and HonKee easily rivals some of the Southside Chinatown spots. There's a small private parking lot but if it's full, there's a public lot next to it and there's also street pahking.

Ask the Community - Hon Kee BBQ & Seafood

Is it handicapped accessible? Thank you!

    Yes it is.

Is this a good place for large groups? Do they have a banquet menu?

Yes, it is a good place for large groups and the food is served family style! I went for a birthday and we had 3 tables that sat 10 and there were other celebrations there as well!

    Do they use MSG?

Not sure, but I hope so. America's Test Kitchen recently dispelled the false narrative about MSG :-D

The hottest dish that came out where the shrimp spring rolls. Can't go wrong with those to be honest. Again, like I said, maybe their dinner is better. Be prepared to wait a little bit for a table, or share a big one with another party at peak times. Prices are reasonable and portions are pretty generous. ===== Kind of lost count of how many times I've been. Love getting the dim sum and noodle dishes here. Some favorites: beef cheong fun with egg, siu mai, Singapore noodle, xo rice noodle rolls, spare ribs, pork and century egg congee. All the food has been very solid. Inside is always bustling and can be a bit crowded. Service is pretty friendly as far as Chinatown goes, and very efficient. There's a guy who works there who I think is the manager or something, because he puts in 200x effort and is always hustling. When he's not around it feels like something is missing. Prices are very reasonable and we like ordering a lot here so that we have tasty leftovers for later. This place has quite a few big tables and is good for large groups. My only nits are that very occasionally a dish or teacup will have a dirty spot, and that the bubble tea here is kind of meh. I don't remember exactly which one I ordered, but it was a little watery and lacking in flavor. It's also probably tough since they're boxed in by boba places now. Pro tip: When you first get your table, they'll ask you what kind of tea you want. If you ignore them or don't know how to answer, the default is green tea. Another one is to come at off-peak times. Not only will you get a table faster, but I think they tweak their portion sizes depending on how crowded it is. Definitely will be back! And I recommend you visit too

Communication was a challenge since very little English was spoken, and the descriptions of the dishes were lacking. I don't enjoy gambling on menu titles that sound good but end up being something completely different from what you expect. Some of the more familiar dishes were solid. The Kung Pao Chicken and Mongolian Beef were both pretty good and tasted like what you'd expect from most Chinese restaurants. Other dishes were much harder to understand, even after asking questions about how they were prepared or whether they were sweet or savory. We ordered the Sauteed Chicken in Hot Spicy Sauce Rice, which turned out to be very heavy on Sichuan peppercorns with a strong floral aftertaste. The chicken sat on a bed of what looked and tasted like deep-fried kale, and despite the word "rice" in the name, there was no rice in the dish at all. That's one item we won't be ordering again. We also tried the Fish Filet with Hot and Sour Lime Sauce. It was basically a sweet-and-sour style fish dish. It wasn't bad, but it leaned much sweeter than expected. Another thing to note: none of the dishes come with white rice--it's completely à la carte. We only found that out after ordering. With prices being what they are these days, it would be nice if they included at least some white rice like most Chinese restaurants do. Overall, the food wasn't terrible, but the lack of clear descriptions and communication made the experience frustrating. I prefer restaurants where expectations are clear rather than discovering surprises after the food arrives.
