From the outside it really does look pretty sketch, but once you step in, it opens up into a bright, expansive space. A couple of friends and I stopped in one night for dinner and we ended up having a great time. All of us ended up getting the special of the day: "Hondruan Fried Chicken"--sounded too good to pass up! Accompanied by some Honduran beers, it turned out to be a tasty meal. The chicken isn't battered and fried, like American fried chicken, but it had a nice crispy skin and moist meat. It's served atop a bed of shredded cabbage, plaintain chips and pickled onions, and drizzled with some kind of a mayo sauce that made for a delightful combo. Service was good and prices reasonable. Delicious food and enough for at least 3 meals. The free chips are possibly the most addictive thing ever (they come topped with a tomato sauce and cheese). You'll fill up on these while waiting for your meal. I got the chicken stew and it comes with two huge pieces of chicken, a mound of rice, beans, slaw and plantains. I'm so glad I walked (hard to find parking) since I needed that to burn off my meal while going home. So this was my first time trying Honduran food and I was very very impressed. All the food definitely tasted homemade especially the tortillas. I didn't know exactly what to order so the waiter guided me every step of the way. I ended up ordering multiple things of the appetizer menu which was a very good choice. So, I hadn't been back here in ages, until a few weeks ago, when we had a local deal that was about to expire. I remembered it being good but not as exciting as I was expecting, but hey, we had a deal. Well, I am here to tell you that I clearly just didn't get the right thing the previous couple times, because this time, I got the "Carne Asada Estilo Ceiba", and WOW is it freaking good. I don't know what it literally means (apparently "Ceiba style?), but what it is is, a huge plate of really good slices of steak, on a big bed of fried bananas and cabbage and then drenched in several different sauces. The one thing I would say is, if I came back and got this dish again (and I *will* probably come back, and if I do, will almost certainly get this dish again), I'd ask them to use a little less of the creamy sauce (which I assume is the "Honduran dressing" from the menu), as it was a bit overkillish in the "making you feel gross afterwards from being super rich" department. It was a ton of food, and extremely good. Pretty quick service, too. It's really too bad they're so out of the way and that parking is such a mess where they are - it's not surprising they're usually almost empty, but it's definitely not from the quality of the restaurant. 5 stars for that dish I mentioned, and if I could, I'd give a bonus 6th star for the complimentary unlimited refills of ridiculously good clearly house-made chips covered in probably also house-made red sauce, that's basically crack sauce. read more

This time I went during the day and parked about a block away for La Bomba Style in the Pile sale (see other review). I don't feel unsafe on this street at all, but at night it can be intimidating with the type of people around (some addicts shouting things in clear daylight, not to mention the old Honduran guy a block away who was hitting on me). The restaurant servers and owners are all about service, just like they are in Honduras itself. I came here on a Saturday for lunch. Its true, some of the servers don't speak very much English and luckily I could translate for my group of 6 college girls. Just to preface what I haven't mentioned before, Honduran food is very heavy, salty, and friend. This is just how Honduras is, I know I lived there as a Peace Corps volunteer. So I can also say that this food makes me feel like I'm back in my host mother's house. My friends had the Carne Asada plate, I had the Cena Hondureña plate without meat. It was so filling and all of my friends complimented their meals. It was alot of food (I think two people can share 1 plate because the sweet tomato sauce chips with cheese can fill you up). Everyone got the platano maduro because it so deliciously sweet and they serve you a lot! For 6 people, the food take a little longer to come out because I think there was only 1 person in the kitchen and 1 server. At the time we came in there were 2 guys ordering take out. There are TVs showing Honduran shows or soccer games mostly. I enjoy coming here and make an excuse to eat here when I can. read more

"Im not from around here..." this cat says softly as he finds himself unsure of where he is as his two friends local to Long Beach drive him and his two bay area friends to a strange location insisting it is an amazing place to eat. This was the situation I found myself in as a vacation away with two friends led me to Honduras Kitchen in Long Beach, This was something a bit new to me. Honduran food? You would think a cat from the bay area like me would have experienced this given the array of food we have there, but this was something I had yet to try. Upon entry, we noted that we were the only customers. Apparently, we had entered when they weren't quite open yet (oops!), but the waitress was very kind and sat us. The menu here was quite vast with many things I hadn't seen or heard of before. upon noting that the Arroz Con Pollo was rated the "LA times best dish", me and my friend decided to give it a try. We were given water and chips, and I must say something about these chips! They are quite addicting! Me and my friends downed those chips quickly and wondered about what sort of cheese and sauce was on them as they were absolutely delicious. The food took a little bit of time to come out, but of course that was understandable as we had basically come in right as they were opening, and it seemed they only had a small staff working. But I will say that it was very well worth the wait. This dish is easily one of my top 5 dishes I have had in my travels about and was also unexpected and surprising. Absolutely brilliant flavor and wonderfully filling (and I mean filling! VERY big portions are served here! if you are not a big eater, split this for two!) Everyone in my group was very satisfied with the food as well as the service and we left happy and speaking among each other at how good of a meal it was. I bought a Groupon deal here - $11 for $22 of food, which is very handy considering most of the entrees are $11. My friend and I went and we only had to pay for tax and tip which was very nice. I got a steak plate with beans, rice, cabbage salad, and plantains. It was very delicious!! The steak was very tender and cooked perfectly. However, I think my favorite part of the dish was the plantains. They were crispy on the outside yet very soft on the inside. They complimented the saltiness of the steak very well. The cabbage salad provided a much needed element of freshness and crisp texture. Prior to ordering, you get complimentary chips which have some sort of salsa and cheese on top. These were very tasty and were a good touch to the meal. The service here was exceptional. Granted, my friend and I were the only customers on a Monday evening, but still, the staff were very friendly, helpful, and attentive. The restaurant is clean and spacious. There are TVs to watch the game, which was very nice. But, I'm not a fan of the purple/green lighting though. The restaurant is in kind of a sketchy neighborhood, so beware of that. read more

Literally a tray of food. I've never had honduran food so I don't know how authentic it is. I'll just write from an open-minded newbie perspective. The meat is all "welldone". I put it in quotations because at some point everyone decided that the French made the cooking rules. I don't agree but for now it gives a reference point. Maybe we should consider Honduras' Kitchen as "the way to do it"? The flavors were all good. I think all the meats were marinaded. My order of favorites: pork chop- shrimp- chorizo- chicken. I also really liked their beans. 2. Service and ambiance: Our server was very nice and attentive. She came by just enough to check on us. The tables were covered with white table clothes covered with white paper. The tables were fairly well spaced. I liked that. It was also not very noisy which was also appreciated. 3. Quick note on parking: there's a small lot at the intersection of Cherry and 4th. It's a quick 2 blocks from the restaurant. Do yourself a favor and eat here! I recommend fasting beforehand because the food is filling LOL but delicious! An original baleada is always a must! The bistek encebollado is such an amazing dish as well. I recommend getting a dish with green bananas then another dish with sweet ripe plantains so you can try both styles mmmm so good! We bought an AmazonLocal deal for this place since it was different and I have never had Honduran food before. We came in on a Friday night and it was pretty much dead. Once you walk you in, you feel like you are in Honduras. It's about the most simple decor you can get. The room itself looks like it was once a night club that has been quickly turned over into a restaurant. It's basically one big room with a bar in the back. We started off with Baleadas, which were the highlight of the night. They also happened to be on sale, 6 for $6. Our server really pushed this on us, but it would have been way too much food. He insisted that we could take it home, but we declined. It does sound like a good deal since they are $2.50 each normally. I ended up going with the Bistec and my wife order their stewed beef. Both plates came with rice, beans, picked onions and plantains. The meat was tough and chewy and the sauces were OK.. The plantains were good, they are pretty much fried bananas which come in different varieties. So overall, the PROS: Good Honduran beer. Baleadas, they were delicious. Plantains. CONS: Tough, chewy meat. Very dull ambiance. They have a lot of seafood options, so we may be back, but then again, maybe not. read more

It's been a while since I came on Yelp to leave a review, but this place really exceeded my expectations. They had so many interesting things on the menu, but having never eaten Honduran food before other than pupusas I decided to go with simple fried chicken. I'm really glad the server recommended ordering it with coconut rice and beans because that coconut sauce was amazing. The fried chicken was delicious... not too deeply fried. It was more like a cross between rotisserie chicken and fried chicken, but very crispy and juicy. My dog had a bite and begged for more all afternoon. If you're tired of Mexican food, but wants to have that somewhat kind of taste, then you should check this place up cause it's gooodd!! My girlfriend and I want to try something new for our weekly food trips, so we tried having lunch in this joint cause it's close to our place and we never tried Honduras food before. She first serve us some juice samplers cause we don't know what fresh juice to order. She got us corn chips with their homemade tomato salsa. It is really unique cause their salsa tasted like almost a gravy type with sprinkled powdered cheese on it. All their juice samplers are pretty good and we decided to ordered the Guanabana and Passion fruit for my girl. The Guanabana juice is so refreshing and tasted like cherry with vanilla flavor mild flavor in it. The Passion Fruit juice in the other hand taste like a mixture of different fruit, but you can still taste the passion fruit. We ordered an appetizer as well called Pastelito. It is serve with pickled onions for the pickled flavoring to compliment the fried looking meat pie, it is pretty good! Now it's the fun part, the main dishes! Their are 3 popular dishes that they serve; Pollo Mesapa, Bisteak Encebollado, and Arroz con Pollo. I ordered Bisteak Encebollado, which is meaty and flavorful. The ingredients are pickled veggies, fried beans, yellow rice on the sides, and the steak on the middle. The mixture of the sides complimented each other, which made me enjoy this dish. My girlfriend ordered Arroz con Pollo which is basically chicken and rice with spices in it plus 2 toasted bread and pickled veggies on the side. The Arroz con Pollo tasted like chicken noodle soup without the soup and pasta; instead they put on it. It is delicious and one of a kind. It is their best dish of 1995 from the LA Times! I live right down the street and my sister wanted me to try out this place. She kept telling me how good it was and not to far from Metro where I pay my phone bill. If the restaurant was a snake it would have bit me! The restaurant is what I call a whole in the wall but sometimes these are the best places to dine. I can't remember what time we went but it was during the week and the place was pretty empty. Only two tables were occupied so there was no wait. Our server was a young girl with plenty of sass! We were served chips with some kind of sauce and grated cheese on top while we looked over the menu. These chips were pretty good seeing as though it was my first time having Honduran food. Next came our drinks. We were given samples and the waitress was very helpful in giving recommendations. After taking our drink request she came back and we were ready to order. We both got the steak with grilled onions, sweet plantains, rice mix with beans and slaw. Everything was delicious! Will I return? Yes.. Yes.. Yes!! So I returned today and brought a friend. All I have to say is... what happened!? It took forever for or meal to come out and when it did, we could hardly chew the steak! We had the same waitress as the first time and when she asked me how everything was, I didn't have the heart to say the meat sucks! so I just said good. :( Maybe this is one of those hit and miss places. Let's start by saying that our tablecloth was dirty. The waitress took forever to bring water to my husband, and we order an appetizer that they brought after we were already eating our main entree.
