After receiving a new "Must Try Restaurants" in your area email from Yelp, I scrolled through some of the new selections. Honest Restaurant stood out among the list, and we gave it a try tonight. As my 4 star review literally says: "Yay! I'm a fan." Only living in Atlanta for the past year, we were unfamiliar with the surrounding shopping center called Patel Plaza. There are a lot of Indian stores, restaurants, and markets in this great shopping center, and Honest Restaurant is one of the newest fixtures. Honest Restaurant was full of people on a Sunday evening, and it is an order from the cashier kind of place. You can look at the menu on the wall or take a hardcopy laminated one to pick your choices. The whole restaurant is vegetarian, which is a plus for me. I could look at the menu and not wonder: Can I eat that? Does it have meat? I could try it all. Their menu includes a lot of delicious sounding choices. There were pizzas, sandwiches, a South Indian section, a selection of chaat (or appetizers), and other dishes. Now just to pick something... We ended up splitting two dishes. First was the masala dosa, which was a dosa (an enormous rice and lentil crepe) with masala on the side. The masala reminded me of almost a gumbo type of consistency (it even had okra), which was thinner than my experience with masala at other places. The flavor was good, but it was probably my least favorite part of this dish. The dosa itself was ahhmazing, and it had a dollop of potato, cashew, and pea inside to try. There were also awesome green chutney and raita sauces. Second, we tried the cheese masala pav with bhaji. I would describe this as a delicious bread bun cut into little slices smothered with masala (which was thicker than the other version) and then covered in cheese and cilantro. The cheese meets tomato meets bread in some bites was reminiscent of a deconstructed spicy pizza, and other bites were more distinctive masala tastes. I have been here several times since they have opened from then to now. I have tried multiple items on their menu and they have impressed me with their great food and service every single visit. All the items have been delicious and I have never been disappointed. The service is relatively fast, barring for a few menu items. The place is usually packed, but it is still easy to find a table. If you are an Indian fast-food and chat lover, go for it. Prices are reasonable but not cheap compare to the other places in the area, but the taste and quantity of the food will overcome it. Regular spice levels are decently spicy. Don't ask for extra unless you can handle it. I will say that their vegetable samosas are spot on. Has the perfect amount of crisp, butter and not overly spiced potato filling. Their sauces are pretty good too. My real go to from this place is Masala Pav, very yummy, tasty and perfect spice the way I like it. The Pav or bread rolls are sliced and then stuffed with a spiced buttery onions, tomatoes and capsicum filling, then drizzled with some lemon juice and garnished with chopped coriander leaves. From the perspective of a hungry guy during Ramadan. My wife and I used to inhabit this place when it was called Chatt Paati. We were so happy to see the same people working at this place. The line was out the door when we went. The wait was about 30 minutes and the owner knew I was fasting and he made it a point to get me my food ASAP. As far as taste two words Nom Nom. The food which is 100% vegetarian is very filling and tarts. The talk platter is a great item to share and also give yourself a variety of items. The dosa is huge and to my surprise not oily at all. The chola comes with two pieces of deep fried roti and the level of oil is also low. All in all this place is a great value . Items range from $6.99 to $9.99 and the portions are very big. The place is clean inside, and there's always plenty of parking. We got the chaat and had them keep it all separated to mix at home - worked well and didn't lead to soggy food. When you're facing the Patel Brothers supermarket, the restaurant will be on your right. The plaza is always busy, but there should always be a good amount of parking there. Food is ordered at the counter and you will get a number so your food can be brought out to your table. The food is cooked to order so you may have to wait around 15 minutes. On the Menu: First off, I should mention that the food here is vegetarian. The main items served here are bhaji pav, pulav, sandwiches, Indian "pizza", and chaat (snacks). Bhaji pav is a vegetarian curry that is served with bread (pav). You can elect to order this dish with cheese on top. Pulav is an Indian rice dish with spices and vegetables. Dosas are essentially crepes, but much larger that are served with chutneys on the side. In the chaat section are puris, which are crispy wheat shells that are served with a mixture of potatoes, vegetables, chutneys, or yogurt. What I Tried: Bhaji Pav ($7.99) - This dish is essentially a diced vegetable curry served with a side of diced red onions, lime, and two warm buttery rolls. You're supposed to break off pieces of bread to scoop up the curry, but I ran out of bread and ended up eating the extra with a spoon. The cashier suggested that I order extra bread - looking back, I think that would have been a good idea. I ordered my dish spicy and found it had a very good level of heat. The curry was flavorful and went well with the soft, warm bread. My only criticism is that the curry may have been a little too rich for my liking, but it is street food and maybe this is how it's supposed to be. You can get reasonably full off of one menu item. Honest, first off is a busy store, especially on the weekend when we went on a Sunday afternoon, although don't be fooled....it's the entire patel plaza (where Honest is located) that is slammed with traffic on the weekend...so much so that finding a spot to park in this strip mall area was really very difficult. We all ordered platters, but what I decided on was the Bhaji pav ($7.99), which comes with buttered crispy bread. I was asked if I wanted two slices of bread because they were popular. Trying to watch out for carbs, I declined, but after taking a bite, I should've got another! Bhaji pav is basically a thick vegetable curry that is served with the previously mentioned bread. Also served were diced onion, lime, and other spices. Frankly I didn't think it needed anything else because the flavor was great, and some of the best indian i've tried. Whoa was the Bhaji pav good, and i'll certainly get this again when I visit! I did try nibbles of this and that, and everything I tried was nicely flavored, so even if you don't get the Bhaji pav, you're in good hands here. As I mentioned the busy environment of Honest Restaurant is busy enough where there are signs asking you to not take a seat at any of the tables until you've ordered, just in case some people try to come and swoop in to take tables before placing an order. I ordered the Cheese Pav Bahji with bread as well as Masala Chai. I expected the Pav Bahji to include paneer and that the bread would be naan, roti, or papadum, or some other bread representative of the cuisine. I was surprised when the food arrived and some nondescript, apparently western style cheese, was grated on top of the Pav Bahji. The bread was two grilled hamburger buns. They were square like the kind served at Krystal's. The Pav Bahji was still very good. The cheese served to take the edge off the spice. The tea was tasty and was served with sugar packets so the customer can customize the sweetness. The tea was also very hot without being dangerously scalding which I deeply appreciate. Nothing ruins a meal like getting scalded by food or beverages served at unsafe temperatures.
