Incredible vegan dining on the island -- a rare find!…read more Service was cordial but perhaps a little scattered (returning to the table to confirm the order we'd just placed, bringing tableware they'd already dropped off for us, forgetting our water -- minor things like that). The mai tai was unusual but palatable. The food was amazing! Still thinking about that Da Bao (Soy musubi patties, steamed buns, pickled carrots, daikon, jalapeños, cucumbers, cilantro, scallions, plum wine sauce) and how I'd like to eat it every day. The specialty rolls were works of art that were equally beautiful and had exquisite taste and texture. Manila Dune (Tempura pumpkin, spiced burdock, shredded tofu, avocado crema, chili, renkon chips) was dense but flavorful. Barbers (Smoked beets, spinach, avocado, soy strip, asparagus, rice crackers, seaweed pearls, spicy aioli, suspense) was intriguing as a little game of sushi roulette (hence the final ingredient). Whoever gets the spicy piece also gets the accompanying shot of sake. I was grateful my husband ended up getting that one because it was hot for him which means it would have been very hot for me. My only complaint with either of these specialty rolls is that each piece was quite large and therefor difficult to eat. I had to do the unconscionable thing and nibble away at it to comfortably eat it without it feeling like a choking hazard. Futo maki roll (Age tofu, spinach, shiitake, kanpyo, inari, pickled radish) was no less delicious for its simplicity. Quality was excellent, and everything on the menu sounded like something we wanted to try. We were so impressed by our meal we almost returned the following (our last) night. Lucky for us they have a restaurant in LA which I intend to visit next time I'm in town which is far more frequently than I'm in Honolulu. But would I consider flying to Oahu again for Tane Izakaya? Yes, yes I would.

Housed in a former gas station, it would be easy to drive right on by without a second thought, as…read morenothing from the outside hints at the culinary treasures within. Despite the fact that it's a considerably trek for city-dwellers, factoring either traffic or bus schedules into the equation, or both if you're particularly unlucky, it's a journey always worth taking. Hit Hanauma Bay along the way and make it a day trip; the only way to top those dazzling sights is to follow them with a stellar meal. Boasting a menu composed of locally-sourced produce and entirely vegan options, you'll want to take a number of friends for the best experience. Heck, get out there and make some new friends! Join one of the long communal picnic tables out back and introduce yourself; there are no friendlier folks on earth than those living in paradise, as far as I've seen. That said, if there was only one dish to order, it would have to be the Oh WOW Laulau. Wow, indeed! No where else on earth have I found vegan laulau, let alone such a stellar rendition. Traditionally consisting of fatty pork and/or fish steamed in taro leaves, this version eschews the meat in favor of hearty root vegetables, adding creamy coconut into the mix for richness. Not to be overlooked is the Tofu Poke provided on the side, claiming to be spicy but really bearing just enough warmth to taste perfectly balanced. This was easily my personal favorite from the small sampling of dishes provided, but it's a close call when all the options are so good. Another front runner is the BBQ Portobello Sandwich. Mushrooms marinated in a bright, smoky barbecue sauce practically sing between two whole wheat buns. Coconut slaw tops off the assemblage with just the right amount of subtle sweetness to contrast the deeply savory flavors within. Simpler but no less spectacular dishes include the Roasted Veg Platter and Roasted Veg Avocado Sandwich. The way that the vegetables are treated with respect, from the moment they're harvested from nearby farms to the care taken when they reach the kitchen is evident with every bite. Cooked with care and proffered generously with each serving, even the basics make the trek out here worthwhile. I'm still trying to recreate that impossibly umami gravy offered on the side. It's one of those things that are so astoundingly, inconceivably delicious, it's impossible to deconstruct. Each entree promises an ideal amount of food; satisfying diners without over-stuffing them. That said, you'll still want to make room for dessert, especially when you see the towering bowls full of Outta This Swirled Soft Serve. Cool, naturally sweet spirals of banana-based soft serve are dressed to the nines with cacao sauce that hardens much like magic shell, granola and coconut flakes tumbling down the mountainous terrain, and fresh fruits that vary based on local availability- Expect papaya always to be in ample supply, based on the thriving papaya trees on premise. Each order is abundant enough to be a considered a full meal in and of itself.

This was a savior when driving around the windward side of island and looking for vegetarian lunch…read more We ordered Portobello burger which had mushroom pieces instead of the patty as I had assumed but tasted good nevertheless. Hummus wrap was good too but cold contrary to my expectation again. Overall nice place but not as good as other reviews made it sound. Another thing to note is that they don't have restrooms. You can go across the parking lot in MacD for that.

The BLTA is a favorite-BLT with Avocado, Big Boy Sammie, and breakfast burrito were very tasty today. The Belgian waffles are cakier than some places. So you know I was surprised to see a beautifully painted building of a surfer girl, octopus tentacles and cute classic VW bus and had to see what was there and it's located right down the street from the Aloha Home Market which is the reason I was in Kailua and after a bit of browsing I got hungry and knew I had to see what Lilikoi Kitchen had to offer. Slightly confused as it shares a small space with a tattoo parlor though walking in the do make the most of the space as there's a service area where there's two ladies doing it all and immediately informed me that it will take approximately 25 minutes for any orders which is great to know upfront. Menu is quite impressive for this cute cafe and though there are many items that caught my cravings it has to have Lilikoi...right!? Monte Cristo is ham, provolone cheese with Lilikoi jam grilled between Japanese style white bread and Lilikoi Iced Tea is the perfect pairing on this Sunday afternoon and gosh what a treat! The cheese pull was insane and the grill was done with perfect marks as you can see it wasn't rushed and grilled perfectly and I loved that it came with some greens and of course Lilikoi dressing...yum! There are some high bar type seating inside but decided that the outside was much more comfy and really enjoyed it all the iced tea was perfectly balance with Lilikoi, the wait can be avoided with a phone order but I rarely plan that early and had no idea it even existed but will be back for the other items. Thank you!

We ordered the avocado pasta with Florentine and short rib, and it was heavenly. Easily one of the best flavor combinations I've had in a long time. Honestly, 6 out of 5. The portions are massive too, one plate can comfortably feed two people. We also tried the shrimp and the brisket. Both were very good, but the short rib dish completely stole the show. Everything was packed well and ready to go. My only suggestion would be to include more napkins and upgrade the utensils a bit to better match the quality of the food. The cheesecake, unfortunately, left a lot to be desired. Given how incredible the mains were, I had high expectations, but it didn't deliver. 2 out of 5. I'd skip dessert next time. Millie at the front was incredibly courteous and handled the constant stream of incoming orders calmly and professionally. There's no seating area, so plan for takeout and enjoy it somewhere calm by the beach for the best experience. Also, definitely order ahead by phone if you can. Wait times can easily reach 30-40 minutes depending on the time of day. Definitely a hidden gem, and I would absolutely come back again for the short ribs.

Decided to try their moringa pasta with the lemon cream sauce and added some chicken for protein. I thought it was a bit much for $30 but given the hefty plate, this was easily 3 meals for me--well worth it in my opinion. The pasta was a bit over cooked but I really enjoyed the lemon cream sauce. A generous amount of chicken as well. Couldn't leave without getting some dessert, so got a calamansi lime cheesecake and the lychee cheesecake. I wish there was a stronger calamansi flavor to the cheesecake but the lychee one was delicious! Service was quick, you order what you want and they call you when your order is ready, if you want to explore around the area/wait in your car. I waited no more than 10-15 mins. There's no seating inside, so this is a grab and go type of place. Next time, I'll be sure to just call in the order and maybe request for the sauce on the side so my noodles aren't mushy.
