Fresh. That's really the impression I get, and I eat here about once a week. I was raised on Chinese food, everything from the Kowloon to the South Pacific (Newton), Makaha (Acton) and on and on... but this is the freshest I've ever had. Other places obviously have everything cooked and reheated, like a buffet in the kitchen, but here everything is cooked to order, and for the most part the meat is nicely trimmed of fat. We had been ordering from the 88, but a few weeks ago it was closed for vacation so as we live just down the street from the Hong Kong we decided to give them a try. It was worth it, the peking dumplings come in 2 sizes and you can choose steamed or fried, perfectly done scallion pancakes and chicken fingers. Both beef dishes we got were good as was the fried rice & lo mein. Tonight we changed it up and got crab ragoon that were great, spring rolls and chicken moo shi (with free extra pancakes). Cool that they deliver to surrounding towns, which was the initial appeal for me. Order included vegetable pad thai, vegetable lo mein, and french fries. I started ordering fries from Chinese places years ago, because I like how they taste fried in peanut oil. They were good. However, the actual Chinese food- the lo mein, was slightly better than the sub par pad thai that had an overwhelming lemon taste (along with half a lemon wedged into the container). This restaurant has recently been taken over by new management - now called New Hong Kong with Chinese & Japanese food and a lounge with a full bar. The new menu has some great options and will please customers looking for sushi and traditional dishes. They also have bubble tea and smoothies in a large variety of flavors. When my family was seated, we had a few questions about the menu. When we asked our waitress what General Gao's tofu was, she told us it was the same as General Gao's chicken, but with tofu instead of chicken - not as helpful an answer as we had been hoping. She also seemed to be the only one working - answering phones, seating people, waiting on customers - which slowed down service. For appetizers we split scallion pancakes and spring rolls. For dinner we decided to share the General Gao's tofu, steamed mixed vegetables, brown rice, and Szechuan green beans. One of us had shrimp and avocado maki. Two of us had bubble tea - one taro tea, one Thai iced tea. The food arrived fairly quickly and tasted very fresh and flavorful, without extra oil or grease. The food is just as good as - if not better than - the food under the previous management. I highly recommend it. The service, however, was lacking. The one waitress was held up for a long time while we waited to have our leftovers boxed and receive our check. When she came for our leftovers and we told her we wanted them to go, she stacked the plates of food on top of each other as one would do if the leftovers were going into the trash - much to our horror! We were almost waiting for her to put our straw wrappers and napkins on top of our leftovers (which, to our relief, she didn't do). The service definitely left us missing our old manager friend who was such a pleasant presence during our meals there. Overall: Go for the food - definitely recommend it for its freshness and speed - but don't expect great or helpful service. read more

Trying to find a good Chinese Restaurant on the North Shore has been a difficult challenge since I moved here from NY a few years ago. After 3 years (and a lot of really crappy service & food) I have finally found my FAVORITE place! I was up late one night (having a bottle of wine... Or two) and googled 'Chinese delivery Salem Ma' and this place popped up - WOW- #amazeballs! This really nice girl answers the phone and takes your order. Sometimes, I need a little guidance when ordering; she's always very helpful. I love the Mai Fun, Chicken & Broccoli, Chicken Wings, Lo Mein, Shrimp Rolls & CRAB RANGOON! Yum! I don't typically leave reviews for restaurants but this place is deserving. In the past 2 months my roommate & I have ordered from there 6 times (they're that good) and now I've gotten my neighbor addicted. I can't say that you won't be disappointed in this place - but I can say that I've been running restaurants for over 10 years and this place has got it right; Great service, Great food, fast delivery and great prices. I used to order from Hong Kong cafe once a week. We'd do chinese food night and to be honest, it was the only place we tried. The first time we ordered, the food was delivered fast and still hot. (30 minutes) A week later we got pick up and it took about an hour. Twice we ate in, the service was extremely slow and the waitress never asked to refill our drinks. It took fifteen minutes before anyone ever even came to our table just to get our food order. We weren't impressed. My disappointment grew. (I usaully leave 30% tip whereever I go but to be honest, I felt even my measly 15 was too much for the poor service at this overrated resturaunt. About two weekends ago was the last night we ever ordered from Hong Kong Cafe of Danvers. I was visiting friends at a hotel and we ordered 3 plates. The price was decent (about $25) and we tipped $5. They told us it would be 40 minutes and they took about an hour. After opening our plates, we realized their was a mistake. One of the plates was supposed to have lo mein, but we got rice. Immediately, we called in. The owner got on the phone and refused to correct the mistake. He explained that they didn't charge for the lo mein plate, (which was $1 more expensive), they charged me for a rice plate, so they wouldn't fix it. Even though I didn't order the rice plate! I explained, I hadn't yet touched the rice plate and even offered to pay the difference, he still refused. He said the only thing he would do is deliver me a small side of lo mein if I'd pay $5 extra. Needless to say, I will never order from there again. Enough is enough. Although the food is halfway decent, the service is horrible. I am still bewildered by the fact that the owner refused to fix their mistake. I wasn't rude or ignorant. Now I know if was New Years Eve. Having placed my order in advance with a good window for pick up. I had to wait 90 minutes from the time I asked to pick it up to the time I finally got the food. Yes, the staff was doing the best they could, but you know what kind of a rush it is going to be.You have to prepare for it in advance. I use to get my food from Royal Garden and never had an issue on New Years Eve.I might have to wait 5-10 minutes which is fine, but 90 minutes?Was any kind of discount offered? No. Was a free can of Coke offered? Absolutely disgusting. I thought they were different now but they just changed they name. It's as gross as ever. The worst pad thai I have ever had in my life. For some reason they made it super spicy. I love spicy food but pad thai should not be the least bit spicy because it is supposed to be peanut based and sweet. Also, I bit into a ton of egg shell. Pretty consistent Chinese food. Since new owners seem to have improved the food a bit. They added sushi (which I haven't tried yet). If you get some apps and some normal dishes, I think you will be happy here. Prices are reasonable. The owner said delivery charge will be free since the total is over 38$ without tax. The ownership changed and the food is just ok. The manager on the other hand is THE most unprofessional and unaccommodating manager I have ever encountered. Fraudulent activity..... Be careful if you order from here! We ordered food for delivery. The food itself was actually pretty good. However, we provided a credit card to charge the order to. When the driver came, we signed the slip and provided a $5.00 cash tip. When the charge hit our credit card, there was an additional $10.00 charge. I called the restaurant and spoke to John who indicated that the mistake was on our end and we must have forgotten that we added the tip. Seriously? WRONG! There were three of us here and my wife was the one that answered the door and signed the slip. Our only mistake was not writing CASH or drawing a line through the tip box. Clearly the delivery driver is committing fraud by adding additional money to the bill for his benefit. John then told me that the driver has been working for him for three years and we are the first to complain? This was the first time I ordered from this place and it will be the last. I have no problem paying for food and I am a firm believer that you should tip a driver. Before I place an order I always ask if I can get the dish without vegetables and depending on the answer makes my decision whether to eat there or not. I asked the gentleman behind the counter if I could order chicken lo mein without vegetables and I was told no problem. When I received my food I checked it before I left and there were vegetables in the lo mein and when I told the gentleman that took my order he proceeded to tell me lo mein comes with vegetables. I politely reminded him that I asked to have no vegatables and he then said the kitchen made a mistake and he would fix it, when I got the new order I again checked for vegetables and yes not only were there vegetables but it had looked like they tried to pick out most of them and handed me back the same lo mein. Place has gone down hill. I have not been here in awhile. I tried to order online. When I arrived they did not place the order, thereby nullifying the reason I ordered online. Another person was also waiting. The guy behind the counter was complaining about all the online orders. Then another customer came in and grabbed her food and said she will not order online anymore and the guy behind the counter actually agreed!! LOL. When I got the food and brought it home the scallion pancakes were dry, clearly they were out all day and just heated them up. The crispy fish was soggy. Food was good... delivery not impressed. To start we were told 30 minutes took an hour. When the food arrived it was cold and there were no utensils ( a $3 delivery charge for cold food). The driver was rude and insisted we write the credit card number ( that had already been provided when we called and charged for the full amount) on a blank piece of paper for him. When we told him that the card was already charged and we would not write number down he was displeased. Next, we realize they have not included parts of our order. We called them looking for the food and they stated they did not want to send driver back with missing things, " we will just give you more food next time you order." After some difficulty they finally agreed to bring the food. Approx 45 minutes later they called to say they are too busy to bring the food and that we were going to have to take more food next time. I quickly advised him we WOULD NOT BE ORDERING AGAIN" I told him to put the money back on charge.. he argued for several minutes about this. Finally he decided that he was going to have someone DELIVER the cash to me. OK, you couldn't deliver the food but you can bring the cash to me instead of putting it back on the charge?
