Walked over and went inside to order.. we both got the lobster roll deluxe for $36. You get a drink, chips, chowder AND a delicious lobster roll. Now thinking about it, wayyy too much food but dang delicious!! We both had the roll Connecticut style, nice hot and drenched in butter. Wow. Great lobster roll. The staff knows what they're talking about when they make recommendations. I'm picky about my lobster rolls and I like them fresh as can be, no odd parts, very little mayo, and a crisp, soft, buttery bun. Joes on a roll did not disappoint. Yes I could've easily gone to market basket and paid like $7 or however much it is and gotten thick bisque with mayo, but joes you pay for quality, and that quality is worth it. Not gonna lie, I was a bit underwhelmed by this place. When I picture a lobster shack, I'm usually thinking of a little place by the water, not along a busy road. There wasn't really anywhere to sit outside either, which was disappointing. Major minus points on the vibe. In terms of the lobster, the quality was decent, but the roll was pretty small. My husband and I visited Joe on a Roll today, and unfortunately, we were very disappointed. We ordered 2 lobster rolls for $34 each and while we understand that food costs have increased, the sandwich contained very little lobster for the price. We wouldn't have minded paying that amount if it had been generously filled, but it wasn't. The roll itself was also soggy and the lobster was chewy, which made it even less enjoyable. We also ordered the shrimp and crab cakes. Unfortunately, we wouldn't recommend either. The shrimp lacked flavor, and both items tasted as though they had been cooked in old oil. In my opinion this establishment has gone downhill. Lobster bisque was like lobster soup. The lobster roll was lacking lobster and looked like it had gone through a food processor. Clam plate's only redeeming item were the onion rings. Clams were highly battered and over cooked, while the French fries were raw. This was our go to place for a quick lunch. I've had lobster rolls all up and down New England and this is one of my favorites. It's a simple place with just a few parking spots, but the price is right and the people have always been nice. The lobster roll isn't super large or overflowing with lobster, but it's enough and it's also 20-30% cheaper than most places, allowing you to try something else! Really enjoyed my hot, buttered lobster roll and the hat trick box that we got (clams, shrimp, and scallops). Had an amazing day on the north shore and decided to end it at joes on a roll. They've been fantastic the last few years. So sad to see such a great place fall so hard. The clams/shrimp came out stone cold. The haddock bites have totally changed from the past. The light fry is no longer existent. Maybe it's new owners not really sure it used to be the very best and I suppose they have no interest in being a top place any longer. The soups were mediocre, glad I didn't go for a lobster roll. Couple others that were eating there were shaking their heads in disappointment too. Do better guys read more

Here to start? Went on a Sunday afternoon and the key word is Disappointed! First, the $30.00 lobster rolls would have been smashed down to be 3-1/2 inches long. The cold one had no mayo or celery that I could find, the lobster was dry and chewy. The warm buttered one was likewise tiny but was edible. We had the clam chowder and the corn chowder which were Luke warm at best and very "average" you can find anywhere around here. This is a very expensive "ok" meal. Wow! I could just leave my review at that... what an amazing find! I had the lobster bisque, which was loaded with tons of delicious lobster! My wife had the chowder, which was equally as impressive. I was hoping to be blown away based on all the positive reviews, but unfortunately, the lobster in my roll was quite tough and much too "chewy". The lobster was likely overcooked. I got the Deluxe roll and chose the clam chowder which was loaded with clams and potatoes but the broth had a distinct sour background flavor. A small point on service. There we no napkins placed in the bag.... Even the fast food joints get this and a major service / customer satisfaction miss as I view it. I'm so glad I found out about this place just in time for my first ever visit to the Boston area. We went a little out of our way on a day trip to Salem by taking the train to Beverly just to check out Joe's on a Roll and it was 100% worth it. We got a cold mayo lobster roll, scallop roll, lobster grilled cheese and fried haddock (hungry family of four). We took the bag of food over to Old Planters, the adults got a couple beers and we tucked in. Everyone LOVED their choices and we shared them around the table so we got the enjoy all the different things. We haven't had a lot of fresh seafood and we not from the area, so I can't compare it to other places in the region, but it was delicious and seemed like a good deal for the quality and quantity. In a search for "best lobster roll in Beverly," Joe's On A Roll came up in the Google search results. I checked out the reviews and decided to give it a shot. This is kind of an out-of-the-way location that used to be a food truck before it became a permanent building. There are about four parking spaces in front of the building and no seating indoors. There is a bench out front that would allow for a place to sit and eat, however, I opted just eat my lunch in my car. This is the kind of place that when you see it, you know it's kind of like a gem for the locals and the neighborhood. There was a walk up window with menus posted beside it and I placed my order for a hot buttered lobster roll combo. In about four minutes, my order was ready and the service was friendly and fast. They take cash as well as credit/debit at Joe's. The chips offered were either a bag of Cape Cod plain or Salt and Vinegar and there were various cans of soda, tea and bottles of water available. I opted for the Salt and Vinegar chips and an Arnold Palmer tea. All of that was just as expected, but the absolute hit was the lobster roll. This is sometimes called a Connecticut style lobster roll and it was definitely delicious. The lobster was plentiful, buttery and so tender. It just melted in my mouth and was just perfect. The bun was toasted just right and I'd guess this roll had about 4 ounces of lobster, which was not bad for $20. They do offer the lobster roll in the traditional cold mayo variety, but I was just in the mood for something different and I would absolutely order this again. I passed by this place everyday going to work and said I always said to myself I should go in. Today my boyfriend and I wanted some seafood to cook for dinner and ended up leaving with a feast. No frills - just a small market. We were going to get something to cook but we couldn't resist getting a dinner plate, haddock, crab meat, and a jar of their house made tartar sauce on top of it. Dinner plate was huge with some of the best scallops I have ever had. Service was great and the lady at the counter was super helpful picking out what we wanted. A hidden gem among all the seafood places!! The lobster rolls are incredible. The clam chowder was by far the best I've ever had!! Don't go to a fancy restaurant for lobster rolls or clam chowder when you're visiting the Gloucester area. Make to trip to Joes!! It's so worth it! Incredibly fresh seafood and fast service. The taste was not as bad as the smell, but still you could tell the lobster was old. The mayo roll at least was chunky and didn't smell as horrible, but still this was not fresh lobster. The rolls are also very small. Our food was sadly not worth the price. I couldn't even finish the butter roll in fear of getting food poisoning. The lobster bisque was fine.
