I was looking for a quick couple of side dishes to bring to a friend's house for a last minute gathering. I had always seen the New China Restaurant in Manteca next to the Save Mart on Yosemite Blvd. and decided to call in my to-go order since I was nearby. I ordered a chicken chow mein and a vegetable dish with mushrooms and snow peas. My order was ready in 15 minutes. The restaurant is a little dark with an odd layout. When you walk-in, it looks as if it is setup for take out only, but if you walk all the way to the left, there is a hostess stand where you can wait to be seated. The service isn't the friendliest, but the food was decent and fresh.

For some reason I can let find Cherry Chicken or Cherry Pork anywhere else but in Northern California. Was in Manteca and found that New China Restaurant has It and I had to get some. It's just like I remember it. Deep fried, sweet and delicious! For me it's a must to order either Cherry pork or Cherry chicken. Both are delicious!

If you like American-ized Chinese food, this is the place for you. I went with a couple of people who love this restaurant. Years after visiting New China restaurant in Ripon (2016?), I was hesistant. We were already going somewhere but they didn't tell me where. Everyone working there seems to be very positive and pleasant. The decorations are typically Chinese, heavy on the red and gold. They have two menus: one with Chinese food and another with o-sushi, etc. I have to remember that I'm back in California and there are few traditional restaurants, Chinese or Japanese. On the east coast, fusion restaurants aren't quite as popular. She asked about drinks. The couple wanted hot tea and I wanted iced tea. I ended up with hot tea. I ordered Szechuan style tofu with rice. The steamed rice was good. It should be for $3.50 a bowl. The main dish was interesting. It appeared to use molasses or something else sugar-y. It's this kind of thing that throws people when they finally have Szechuan style food and it doesn't taste anything like this. I remember asking the owner of a restaurant why they cooked that way and she told me "because they won't eat it the other way", which is probably true. So, if you like American-ized Chinese food, I'm sure you'll be happy. The couple enjoyed their food. The price wasn't bad, but their menu is so not Chinese that I wonder what they eat when they close the restaurant. Service was friendly. I won't return.

My bill ... tad pricey for what I got. Not bad though. Definitely competitive

So the service was not what I hoped for. Took over 45 minutes for a to go order. To be fair they had lots of to go orders and it was during the dinner rush time. The ambiance was cool in the dining area but not so desirable in the to go section. Definitely needs a deep cleaning! The food was ok. I would give 2 stars for food with 5 being fabulous and 1 being horrible. My Wor Won Ton soup had two shrimp. The wontons were over cooked and falling apart. I had about three maybe four pieces of bbq pork in it, not whole slices just pieces. Also got the build your own combination plate, the chow mien lacked flavor and left a lot to be desired it gets a 1 star. The broccoli beef was good 3 stars and the sweet and sour chicken was 3 stars. I will need to give this place another try before 3 pm when everything is cheaper for one and I'm hoping less busy. When I come again I may update my review ( I'm hoping I can). Parking can be tricky here as it's in a strip mall. Check out my photos.

Lunch Plate. Broccoli Beef (substituted Mongolian sauce) with pork fried rice.

Let me start off saying I have been going to New China in Manteca for years. This place was the place to be in the 2000s. I went with some co-workers in October 2023. In total, 4 of us dined and were promptly greeted and sat as soon as we walked in. The ambiance of this place continues to be great. The lighting is dim and it feels very comfortable and authentic. Our drinks orders were taken promptly and a short while later, our food orders were taken as well. I ordered the lunch plate with Broccoli beef and asked for them to use Mongolian Sauce instead of the regular sauce (extra $1.00), this gives it a little spicy kick. Try it, you won't regret it. I also ordered it with pork fried rice, which was about $1.00 extra (substituted for Steamed Rice). It came with daily soup as well. The flavor was good and about what I expected it to be. My only beef (pun intended) was that the portions seem to be pretty small, comparing to what I have been used to during previous visits. My co-workers also weren't happy with the taste of their meals, compared to other places in town. They mentioned that it tasted pretty bland. Overall, I give it a solid 3 out of 5 stars. I'd like to see some slightly more affordable options for lunch. Expect to pay about 12-15 (before tip) for a lunch plate and water.

Smallest order of fried won tons I have ever gotten.

Placed a to go order today after not having eaten here in a few years. I ordered spicy mongolian chicken and it wasn't spicy at all. Smallest order of fried won tons I have ever seen. See photo and they were cold and hard as a rock. Our pork fried rice was ok but cold. Never again for $47.00

Good Chinese spot in the area. We decided to have dinner here last week. This place offers Japanese food as well. We chose to build our own combo plates. My dad ordered the pork fried rice, sweet & sour pork and beef with broccoli. My mom got the chicken chow mein , chicken with mixed vegetables and orange chicken. I ordered the Mongolian beef, white rice and honey walnut shrimp. The lack luster would have to be the chicken chow mein. It tasted bland and needed more flavor. I would pass next time on ordering the Mongolian beef, it had 95% onions and 4 to 5 pieces of beef. The ones that we liked are the orange chicken, sweet & sour pork and chicken with mixed vegetables. Overall, we enjoyed the food we ordered here. Service was good too. Will have to come back and try out their Japanese food.

The plastic pulled from my soup. I had already choked on a separate piece.

I had a much larger star review, but this is now the third time, I have coughed up plastic, and choked on plastic from their soups. Once was eating it from when my mother dropped some off... I assumed it was a fluke. Once while eating there, I again assumed/like an idiot, that this must just be some weird coincidence. But, we ordered soup again today, and I coughed up plastic, it cut my throat, and I'm over it. I can't even believe I allowed this to happen this many times. Definitely stupid on my part. I have photos of the plastic. It is thick, sharp, and no idea how much I actually swallowed. This is unacceptable, and not okay. This used to be my favourite place, but I can't ever eat here again. Check your soup. Mainly the won ton types. This was from one bowl. I haven't broke apart the rest but I am sure there is more plastic in there.

    Mexican roll to go
    Stevi B.

Tonight I had the Mexican Roll and Hot & Sour soup. The roll was pretty good with spicy crab and avocado on the inside, topped with cilantro and jalapeño. I think I'd order that one again. The hot and sour soup isn't at the top of my list. The broth is thick and almost syrupy in flavor, almost like a melted jelly consistency. Not my favorite.

Food was so much better this time around than the last time I had been there. They really must've had a bad night when I had gone previously. Small restaurant in the of a little strip mall off of Main Street. They serve classic Chinese American food and unlike most places in the Bay Area that are family style dishes preferably on a Lazy Susan during dinner time. They offer rice plates, or combo plates for individuals, similar to lunch specials. I selected several dishes and asked the server which was the most popular amongst the dishes I chose, and she let me know the salt and pepper fish, which I got with chow mein. We also ordered shrimp & broccoli, and sweet-and-sour pork. Everything appeared made to order and looked very fresh. From grandma to the babes everyone was happy with their food. Mine was more on the plain Jane with just fried fish, luckily it came with sliced jalapeños to give it a kick. Next time I'll order a spicy eggplant dish. This is a good place to go to if you're with a group of picky eaters. Price is very reasonable, especially for dinner.

7/5 /25 Update 3/5 This has been a long time coming…read moreunfortunately. Ever since the previous owners sold the place the quality has dropped significantly. Consistency has been a major issue not only with food but with policy. When they first took over I'm sure there were some learning curves and maybe tweaks to the recipes. I wanted to give them a fair shot to get things right. Not sure if the old cooks stayed or if they got new ones? Did the new owners have the recipes changed? Did they change suppliers of ingredients, etc, I just don't know. What I can tell you though is that at least some of the dishes are different and are off from what I remember. The general Tao sauce I thought tasted different but necessarily bad. But combine that with a definite lack of crisp/crunch with the fried items and that's gonna be a problem for me. This time around, I only got the general tao beef because unlike my previous visit, they did not allow me to order the general tao beef in the combo plate as in upcharge (just last week or the week before it was allowed). I've been multiple times since the change in ownership. Partly because of the convenience of the location and partly because of the hope that whatever meal I eat at any given time will at least satisfy my fix for their type of Chinese American food. Unfortunately, the fried items I loved so much like orange chicken, sweet and sour pork and general tao beef alike are all severely lacking the crunch from the fry. As of late I've been getting the General Tao Beef to track consistency and it's been consistently under cooked in terms of the batter. The beef itself has been rubbery and to the point where I can't even break apart a piece and end up having to eat it whole lots of times. The other problem is that the pieces are large inconsistently cut (sometimes with, sometimes against the grain) strips making for a difficult chew. And because of the lack of crunch the fried battered outside just falls apart when you bite or try to cut it apart. The last two visits, but especially this one considering I ordered extra crunchy, were severely undercooked and soggy. it was to the point this time where I basically had to scrape off the majority of the batter and just eat the rubbery beef inside. It really does bring me pain to drastically drop the rating of a place that I once loved. I hope one day they can make the fixes so that I can continue to enjoy their food once again. I gave them a 3/5 but honestly, it probably should have been 2/5. I think the chicken with hot garlic sauce might be just good enough to keep it at 3/5 even though the last three times I ordered it. It was inconsistently hot (with cold spots) temperature wise.

For me this place is a 3/5. I ordered the general chicken and orange chicken. They said it would be ready in 15 minutes. I came maybe about 10 min later. Got the food and tasted it soon after I got to my car. Orange chicken lacking in that orange pop. General chicken lacking in overall flavor. What was the most unforgivable though was the soggy chicken. Eating at its optimal level would be eating it fresh at the table at the restaurant. Next best thing would be in the car as soon as you got it. But it's a to-go restaurant to realistically your eating it at home after it's traveled for however many minutes. As expected when I got home it was soggy. But it was already as soggy as possible to begin with. Why is this place a 4/5 I have no idea. Maybe since I came during off peak hours so they foods just sitting around and there's no fresh food turnover? No idea. Maybe I'll give them another chance one day but who knows. Also factor in that they don't have rice plates and the cost of pure entrees alone and that's a negative for me. I didn't know how lacking Chinese food was in Manteca because I was spoiled by the old Kitty's Kitchen. Nothing compares in the area.

I'll comment on the taste in a bit but I want to first highlight something I've never experienced. In all my work-from-home years I've never once had to-go experience where the dishes looked like they'd been plated for table service at the restaurant. Sure some stuff shifted in the Dasher's car but it honestly blew me away. Even the drink was carefully wrapped and put in a little box to ensure it wouldn't leak everywhere. As for the important bit, the taste, man... I have had so many amazing Thai meals at places in the bay area and honestly just assumed the most Modesto would get is some great Banh Mi spots. Obviously I haven't had the chance to try the whole menu but my go-to, Tom Kha, this is the best Thai coconut soup I've ever had! The Pad Thai is as good if not better than what I've had in San Francisco as well. I'm really looking forward to bringing friends and family here to check it out in person!
