China Bowl is one of those places that if you blink, you'll miss it. It's a tiny little place nestled in between medical and business offices on the main strip in Ripon. But, it's been there forever and, if you know, you know! I've seen this place for at least 20 years with every intention to stop by, but never did until last Saturday. I took my Mom for lunch and we were greeted right away by a really nice lady (the owner?) who seated us and took our drink orders as we sat down. The place is small, but extremely clean. There were only 2 other tables occupied besides us, but that changed within the next 20 minutes as more people came to dine-in. We ordered the seafood combination lunch plates which were $10.95 each. It came with a cup of the egg flower soup (very tasty), white rice, and a delightful sauteed blend of shrimp, calamari, carrots, zucchini, and broccoli in a light sauce perfectly seasoned. The portion of each lunch plate was so big that Mom and I could have easily shared and still been full, but it was nice to have leftovers for later. I wish I would have taken more pictures... We also tried an order of the fresh, homemade potstickers which were some of the best we've ever had. China Bowl has a nice selection of menu items to choose from, the food is made fresh, and the restaurant is very clean. The staff is friendly and attentive - we are definitely coming back!

Really enjoyed our meal here tonight. Small quiet little restaurant. Clean and friendly staff. Good was made quickly. We ordered: wor wonton soup, honey walnut shrimp, broccoli beef, house chow mein, house fried rice, and veggie egg rolls. The wor wonton soup was great. Wonton were big, and full of meat. I haven't had a wonton that full or big in a soup before. Flavor was good and lots of veggies. Honey walnut shrimp was definitely our favorite. The double fry on it gave it such a great crunch to it, and the shrimp still remained soft and flavorful. And the shrimp were big, bigger than ice ever had at any other Chinese restaurant. Everything we had was just great! Haven't had good Chinese food since we've moved out here to the valley and this definitely has changed our minds. We definitely will be making the drive over here to have Chinese food! My youngest loved the chow mein soup much she asked for the whole plate to eat the remaining noodles. Overall, this place is our new favorite Chinese restaurant. Also, to top it all of, we were wonderfully blessed by an older gentleman who paid for our meal today, I wish I could thank him. It was definitely a memorable meal today.

Solid Chinese American food that satisfies your greasy spoon Chop Suey House cravings. Taste is good, serving sizes are huge and the price is cheap. Lots of plate combo options that will get you out the door with enough food for 2 for $10. If your idea of yummers is large servings of deep fried crunchy sweet meat in the form of orange chicken, lemon chicken, sweet & sour pork etc you will love this place.

I'll comment on the taste in a bit but I want to first highlight something I've never experienced. In all my work-from-home years I've never once had to-go experience where the dishes looked like they'd been plated for table service at the restaurant. Sure some stuff shifted in the Dasher's car but it honestly blew me away. Even the drink was carefully wrapped and put in a little box to ensure it wouldn't leak everywhere. As for the important bit, the taste, man... I have had so many amazing Thai meals at places in the bay area and honestly just assumed the most Modesto would get is some great Banh Mi spots. Obviously I haven't had the chance to try the whole menu but my go-to, Tom Kha, this is the best Thai coconut soup I've ever had! The Pad Thai is as good if not better than what I've had in San Francisco as well. I'm really looking forward to bringing friends and family here to check it out in person! Side note... yes, it's also very expensive ordering via Doordash with their added fees but it's 2026 and it's California. So far my multiple orders have been well worth the price and I expect the same experience in person! (just, you know, without the extra Doordash fee nonsense)

Wowwwwzaaa! Was craving Thai food and gave this little unknown place a try. Never knew this place…read moreeven existed. The restaurant is in a little old school strip mall, supperrrr tiny but don't let that deceive you. Inside was packed and there was a line outside too. Ordered to-go and they said 20 mins but it was more like almost 30-40 min. Truly worth the wait though. Will definitely be coming back to this spot! Also, got a peek in the kitchen and the cooks looked authentic and Thai? That's why it's so yummy! lol.

Food was so much better this time around than the last time I had been there. They really must've had a bad night when I had gone previously. Small restaurant in the of a little strip mall off of Main Street. They serve classic Chinese American food and unlike most places in the Bay Area that are family style dishes preferably on a Lazy Susan during dinner time. They offer rice plates, or combo plates for individuals, similar to lunch specials. I selected several dishes and asked the server which was the most popular amongst the dishes I chose, and she let me know the salt and pepper fish, which I got with chow mein. We also ordered shrimp & broccoli, and sweet-and-sour pork. Everything appeared made to order and looked very fresh. From grandma to the babes everyone was happy with their food. Mine was more on the plain Jane with just fried fish, luckily it came with sliced jalapeños to give it a kick. Next time I'll order a spicy eggplant dish. This is a good place to go to if you're with a group of picky eaters. Price is very reasonable, especially for dinner.

7/5 /25 Update 3/5 This has been a long time coming…read moreunfortunately. Ever since the previous owners sold the place the quality has dropped significantly. Consistency has been a major issue not only with food but with policy. When they first took over I'm sure there were some learning curves and maybe tweaks to the recipes. I wanted to give them a fair shot to get things right. Not sure if the old cooks stayed or if they got new ones? Did the new owners have the recipes changed? Did they change suppliers of ingredients, etc, I just don't know. What I can tell you though is that at least some of the dishes are different and are off from what I remember. The general Tao sauce I thought tasted different but necessarily bad. But combine that with a definite lack of crisp/crunch with the fried items and that's gonna be a problem for me. This time around, I only got the general tao beef because unlike my previous visit, they did not allow me to order the general tao beef in the combo plate as in upcharge (just last week or the week before it was allowed). I've been multiple times since the change in ownership. Partly because of the convenience of the location and partly because of the hope that whatever meal I eat at any given time will at least satisfy my fix for their type of Chinese American food. Unfortunately, the fried items I loved so much like orange chicken, sweet and sour pork and general tao beef alike are all severely lacking the crunch from the fry. As of late I've been getting the General Tao Beef to track consistency and it's been consistently under cooked in terms of the batter. The beef itself has been rubbery and to the point where I can't even break apart a piece and end up having to eat it whole lots of times. The other problem is that the pieces are large inconsistently cut (sometimes with, sometimes against the grain) strips making for a difficult chew. And because of the lack of crunch the fried battered outside just falls apart when you bite or try to cut it apart. The last two visits, but especially this one considering I ordered extra crunchy, were severely undercooked and soggy. it was to the point this time where I basically had to scrape off the majority of the batter and just eat the rubbery beef inside. It really does bring me pain to drastically drop the rating of a place that I once loved. I hope one day they can make the fixes so that I can continue to enjoy their food once again. I gave them a 3/5 but honestly, it probably should have been 2/5. I think the chicken with hot garlic sauce might be just good enough to keep it at 3/5 even though the last three times I ordered it. It was inconsistently hot (with cold spots) temperature wise.

For me this place is a 3/5. I ordered the general chicken and orange chicken. They said it would be ready in 15 minutes. I came maybe about 10 min later. Got the food and tasted it soon after I got to my car. Orange chicken lacking in that orange pop. General chicken lacking in overall flavor. What was the most unforgivable though was the soggy chicken. Eating at its optimal level would be eating it fresh at the table at the restaurant. Next best thing would be in the car as soon as you got it. But it's a to-go restaurant to realistically your eating it at home after it's traveled for however many minutes. As expected when I got home it was soggy. But it was already as soggy as possible to begin with. Why is this place a 4/5 I have no idea. Maybe since I came during off peak hours so they foods just sitting around and there's no fresh food turnover? No idea. Maybe I'll give them another chance one day but who knows. Also factor in that they don't have rice plates and the cost of pure entrees alone and that's a negative for me. I didn't know how lacking Chinese food was in Manteca because I was spoiled by the old Kitty's Kitchen. Nothing compares in the area.
