The Local - grilled cheese with corned beef
    Maile N.

I will follow them wherever they go! Andrew and Amy are a great team who will work hard to bring you Ono (tasty!) grilled cheese sandwiches with pastrami, spam and more, plus their tomato soup, salads, smoothies, lemonades and coffee drinks. My mouth is watering just thinking about their food! And with their Aloha hospitality, it is the full package dining experience. They closed their spot at Ala Moana Center, but they've got the cutest (of course, with the decorations!) food truck in Waikiki - check them out and support your local, small businesses!

The foods always fresh great smoothies and - the best deal salads at ala moana shopping mall. I work here and so glad I discovered the feta strawberry salad and amazing pesto grilled cheeses. It's a nice chill spot in chaos of the mall. Staff is always friendly and nice environment to chat and staff always serving Aloha !!!

You would never guess that such a small spot tucked away in the basement of Ala Moana could be THIS good. I'm not even a tomato soup person, but this was, without exaggeration, the best tomato soup I've ever had in my life. We loved it so much that we came back again. It's the perfect place to slow down after shopping, sit comfortably, eat real food, and not commit to a big and expensive mall restaurant. The sandwiches are top-notch. On one visit we came during peak lunch time, and it was really busy. The wait felt long and I can I admit I was a little annoyed at first. But the moment the food arrived, all irritation disappeared (and I even felt slightly guilty for complaining). It was so worth it. The mozzarella pesto sandwich is incredible -- fresh, flavorful, perfectly balanced. The pastrami sandwich is just as good. Even our toddler loved the food: he happily shared the soup and sandwiches with us. The mango smoothie was fine, but not the highlight -- a little on the sour side, maybe not mango season. Everything else? Outstanding. The atmosphere is another big plus. The place feels cozy and thoughtfully designed. There's a lovely sofa corner, and even when it's busy, many people order to go, so the seating turnover works well. We managed to sit down both times without stress. The staff is super friendly, happy to help, and great about packing leftovers if you need it. Highly recommend if you're at Ala Moana and want something comforting, delicious, and genuinely well done.

Located on the first floor of Ala Moana, this place is a gem. It's absolutely beautiful on the inside. Upon entering, you'll be promptly greeted by staff. They've got a variety of different amazing sandwich options from savory to sweet, then offer delectable sides to include local kettle cooked chips, tomato soup, and smoothies too! They do have seating available, but it is minimal. Luckily, if it is busy, the food court is right around the corner for additional seating. Ultimately, we elected for Da Aloha and The Pastrami seeing as how it was lunch time. Both meals came out in a reasonable amount of time and looked amazing. Luckily for us, the taste matched, and the meal was exactly what we were looking for as something refreshing without being too heavy on an adventure-filled afternoon. Give this place a try!

I had seen a social media post of the pastrami sandwich with an egg added to it that I had to make a visit. It did not disappoint. I also got the tomato soup, which was very good, and a lychee lemonade. I would definitely make another visit to have another lychee lemonade...absolutely delicious! The ambiance was cool and service was superb. The ladies that took my order and put it together were so very pleasant and hospitable! I'm going to have to make a few more visits to try the other items and drinks!

We finally got to try Honolulu Bistro and it did not disappoint. This place was recommended by a lot of reviewers and we were happy that it lived up to the hype. We decided on the PBBH and Da Aloha sandwiches. The PBBH is a peanut butter, banana and honey grilled sandwich dusted with powdered sugar. The peanut butter was ooey gooey and everything worked so well together! I could eat this sandwich every single day. No joke! Da Aloha is a rainbow grilled cheese on garlic bread. The buggah was winnahz! And the cheese pull was IG worthy. Next time we're going to try it with the tomato soup. Drooling as I write this. Service was top notch. Super friendly and helpful. The restaurant was cute and had a lot of photo spots. They also serve fresh smoothies and all drinks are made in-house. So if you find yourself at Ala Moana looking for a spot to grab a bite, walk outside of the foodcourt facing the beach and take a right. A couple doors down you will find this unassuming, awesome spot.

Stopped by Honolulu Bistro and tried the pastrami sandwich. Flavor? Actually pretty solid. But I'm not gonna lie--I had to work for it. Like, elbows in, grip tight, focus mode activated. It was one of those sandwiches where you pause halfway and reflect on your life choices. By the time I finished, I felt like I earned a badge or something. Respect to the sandwich, but low-key... food shouldn't feel like CrossFit. The drink though? Fire. Best part of the meal, no hesitation. I wish I remembered what I ordered because I would absolutely get it again and gatekeep the name a little. Service was chill, the vibe was relaxed. Worth a stop if you're hungry and ready to actually commit to a sandwich. But if you're looking for easy, effortless joy in a meal, this one might have you clocking in.

Great find for lunch! Located on 1st floor of the mall, outside of the Makai Market Food Court, facing the parking garage. Local husband and wife team own and operate. Very friendly and made good suggestions. Small establishment with counter top seats. We ordered the pastrami and the spamwich. Both were great but my husband and I agreed the spamwich was the best. We also got the coconut mocha frappe and hazelnut frappe which were delicious as well. We will definitely be back when we are in the area again!

I've followed this business for a year or so on Instagram and never had a chance to try it. I finally stopped by and it didn't disappoint. I ordered the Deluxe Chicken Pesto Sandwich and the Coffee Coconut Frappe. Everything is made to order so there is a little wait time but service was awesome. This is a small little hole in the wall outside of the Ala Moana Food Court but very nicely decorated. Both of my products was delicious and I look forward to trying more.

The store is so cute inside and the service was wonderful! It was my first time and they answered all my questions about the menu!!! I got the tomato soup and the pastrami sandwich. Unfortunately I did not like the tomato soup, it tasted like tomato water; but the sandwich was delicious!! I'll definitely be back to try a smoothie and the pesto deluxe!!

Great service, great music, and I throughly enjoyed my head turning "Da Aloha" grilled cheese w a cup of their tomato soup. It's garlicky, cheese, and beautiful.

Thank you Andrew for the perfect suggestion which killed my crave perfectly. Hot pastrami Sandwich.

If you're not a fan of seafood, don't let the squid deter you as it is a minimal part of the dish and added more of a crunchy textural component rather than actual flavor. This was my wife and my favorite dish. The luau pork was also very good though I liked the version we had at Toa Luau better. We also liked the haupia which was a very refreshing coconut pudding though for some reason our boys didn't like it. We also tried pipikaula which are thinly sliced dry-aged beef short ribs marinated in soy sauce and something else that made it sweet. If you know Korean barbeque, you'll instantly get the sensation that these are close cousins to galbi, though the pipikaula are much less sweet in comparison. The dry aging process also makes them a bit more dryer than galbi. On to more difficult stuff. I was enthusiastic about the fried butterfish collar but once I got a waft of the dish, I knew I was in trouble. I'm very sensitive when it comes to fish so the smell (more than the taste) was off putting. My wife was fine with it and enjoyed the dish, but if you aren't a fan of fishy fish, then I would skip it. The lomi salmon looked very much like pico de gallo with the addition of salt-cured salmon. My boys loved this dish because they love salmon but again I would steer clear if you are a seafood weakling like me. Alas, we come to poi. Had my hopes up since I love taro but the texture and a bit of sourness from fermentation deterred me from trying too much of it. I'm glad we tried it but not sure that we would get it again.

The staff was super nice about it and was able to accommodate us, with only a small request that we be out by 8pm since there was another big party with a reservation coming in. Absolutely reasonable. They sat us right away at three large tables, which gave us plenty of space for food and didn't force us to sit super close together. Menus, waters, plates, napkins, and forks were all brought out immediately, and our waiter was quick to take our order. We started with the prix fixe menu for 8-10 guests and were going to add other items à la carte, but a handful of our group accidentally went to the other Side Street location (make sure your group is all on the same page), so what we ordered ended up being more than enough. We left stuffed and with 5 boxes of food still. Edamame was nice and steamy, and large enough to easily pop the beans out with your mouth. Wish there was a bit more salt though. The farmer's salad had everything going on from citrusy to salty to crispy. Avocado had a little bit of oxidation but the capers, dressing and potato curls provided plenty of reasons to overlook it. The fried rice came in a hefty portion, with sizable pieces of bacon and sausage. The chicken I didn't realize was boneless based on the shape of the deep fry, but it was nice to freely bite into it without worrying about hitting anything with my teeth. Probably a bit too much on fried bits but still good. Pork chops had a better meat to crisp ratio in my opinion, as well as juiciness. They even came with ketchup on the side, which I love as a pairing but don't see much of at restaurants. My favorite meat item was definitely the sizzling boneless kalbi. The presentation on the sizzling plate with a side of kimchi was spectacular, and the meat was full of flavor. We also ordered yakisoba, which wasn't part of the prix fixe. Tasted good but nothing past standard expectations. We let the waiter know we had a 30th birthday at the table, and they brought a couple scoops of vanilla ice cream with a candle, and did a decent job getting the whole room to participate in the singing. It could also be the type of crowd this place attracts, since it seemed that everyone was so friendly and approachable. Thanks to the quick and consistent service, we were out in a little over an hour with no complaints.

Took a chance any way. Server greets everyone who comes in. Too much work for only one server, hard to get taken care of. More than half the tables were full even before 5pm on a Saturday, and there's a steady take out business, too. Looked at the online menu since the server didn't bring us a menu and we were waiting, but it doesn't list the squid luau combo so we had to wait for the server to take our order. She did take care of us before the walk ins that were ordering take out, and we appreciated that. However, turned out squid luau combo wasn't listed online because they were out. Boo. So hubby and I ordered the laulau combo consisting of a nice sized laulau that was tasty, with a nice ratio of pork to leaves, very large scoop of rice, some lomi salmon that was mostly onions that were quite strong and bitter and almost no salmon, pulehu chicken, which was tasty and had a nice char, and haupia, which was good. So food was fifty/fifty. Hubby ordered a coke, which was bottled Mexican (means real cane sugar) which was yummy. They serve Mexican food so I guess they have other Mexican sodas, but I didn't bother to check the menu. We had to ask for water three times because the server was so busy. We had a lot left over since the portions are big. Not sure if we will be back, though. While the server was nice and trying hard to take care of everyone, having to wait to order (another family even came up to ask is they could order after waiting for awhile) and then having to ask for water three times is a turn off for us. Also - no squid luau where's Hawaiian food is served was a major let down for me.

Now I've had a lot of these in my life, and I must say, Iyasume are easily the best. See musubi and onigiri have humble origins as a quickly made homespun snack or on the go lunch, and when you spot them in the convenience environment they're often a giant ball of rice with a tinge of protein or seasoning for flavor. At Iyasume, these are culinary adventures, stacked with ingredients, all in handheld form, and the variety they offer is IMPRESSIVE! Of course musubi starts with the classic, SPAM. I had to order the kimchi + spam, shiso + spam, and unagi + tamago + spam, all of which were awesome (even the next day!). Onigiri here are actually layered with ingredients, so you get them in every bite, unlike the convenience store versions! I found purchasing four musubis very affortable. Finding parking was tough and expensive in the area. Not the restaurant's fault and probably drivers are not the bulk of their business.

I loved it here. Truly a hole in the wall. Parking is really tough so street parking is usually…read moregonna be the norm unless you get lucky in their tiny shared parking lot. The guava bar was delicious and flavorful and just crumbles in your mouth! Definitely one of the better guava bars I've tried. Love how crumbly it is. The salmon belly was delicious OMFG. It looks so simple and straightforward but that sht is so flavorful. It is crispy and yet soft on the inside. The salmon belly is cut into bite-sized pieces so I didn't have to worry about using a knife to cut it. I usually try salmon belly where it is usually seasoned lightly to bring out the natural flavor of the salmon, but Guava Smoked's salmon belly is just grilled in a way that makes the salmon sweet/crispy and still get traces of the salmon taste as well. It's definitely not your traditional Japanese-style way of cooking salmon belly but really just their own. I'd go back and get this again. Another thing too. I'd get this with beer. This would hit very hard with alcohol but because I don't drink I need a kombucha. The grilled salmon belly would go perfect with it. Cheers! Uncle was very helpful and kind when serving and if you dine-in he brings it to your table.

The guy at the counter wasn't the most people person ever, but he also got the job done. Didn't get a photo of the guava cake brownie thing they have, but it was really yummy.

3.5 stars We wanted…read moreto try authentic Hawaiian food and came across this spot. The owner was very friendly and took the time to recommend dishes for us, including the laulau and lechon kawali. We also ordered the BBQ short ribs. Overall, it was a good experience trying Hawaiian food, but it's just not really our type of cuisine. The laulau was quite dry, and the preparation felt more like meat that had been boiled or cooked in liquid, which isn't something I usually enjoy. The lechon kawali had a crispy pork belly texture, topped with something similar to a salsa, but it didn't suit our taste either. Unfortunately, the cabbage served with it also had some black spots, which was off-putting. The BBQ short ribs were the highlight of the meal and the dish we enjoyed the most. We appreciate the experience and the hospitality, but the flavors just didn't quite match our personal preferences.

Then someone wanted to change from rice to poi. I tried many times and no one answered. Their voice mailbox was full. We e ended going there to make the change. He gentleman looked like he was working be himself. We bads to wait almost a half hour for him to finish the order. 2. Price - the prices were higher than expected. All the plates were $26.00 and up. 3. Food - The poi was very tasty and fresh, although a bit watery. The lau lau had a lot of lean pork filling, not a lot of leaves. The long rice didn't have much chicken and was a bit watery too. We enjoyed the sweet potato. There was also lomi salmon, haupia onion and chili pepper water. 4. As mentioned before there isn't much parking. The restaurant wasn't busy when we got there. Overall the food and service was OK. The price was a bit high.
