Bbq chicken was ok, but nothing compared to Mo'Bettahs!

I've been a long time fan of Hawaiian plate lunches, and a loyal fan of Mo' Bettahs. Finally the curiosity in me won out.. why was everyone saying go try Honolulu Grill and insisting it was better than what I had tried? I made the trek over to Honolulu Grill. First impressions did not wow me. While the place was clean, it looked like I stepped into a time warp into the late '80s or early '90s. Honolulu Grill's website looks equally dated compared to the interior of the restaurant. Prices are a little higher here when taking into consideration portions given at Mo' Bettahs. When you consider the specials/reward perks at Mo' Bettahs this place is a LOT more expensive. I convinced myself the added cost must mean they just take more care in the food. It is technically made to order here and they have a much more extensive menu. I ordered the BBQ chicken to compare one of their more popular chicken items to what I order at Mo' Bettahs. I was also intrigued with the coconut shrimp, because I'm a huge fan of coconut shrimp. I ordered both plates with rice as well as macaroni salad. The food was super hot, the wait was a little longer than expected considering it wasn't overly busy during my visit. Staff were polite, but I wouldn't consider the service anything over the top. Food wise, the chicken was ok, but it definitely didn't taste BBQ'd, more like baked (there wasn't a single grill mark). The coconut shrimp was a complete failure.. do not order this. Not only was the coconut shrimp excessively greasy, it was basically shrimp tempura covered in a coconut sauce. The coconut sauce on the shrimp tempura didn't give it much of a coconut taste, all it managed to do was make the shrimp soggy and more greasy tasting. The rice was average, and I actually didn't care for the macaroni salad. Sorry to say, the macaroni salad and chicken is better at Mo' Bettahas.. and way more reasonably priced. No, Mo' Bettahs doesn't offer coconut shrimp, but I'm willing to live with that... considering this coconut shrimp was a complete let down and quite expensive for what it was. My recommendation would be skip this place, go to Mo' Bettahs for better prices and quality in spite of their smaller menu.

From having Hawaiian food in Hawaii this place is the closest I've ever tasted that has been "real Hawaiian"! I am not sure of this place is a chain or a family owned joint... What ever it is it's good food! Bbq chicken was nice and juicy. Teriyaki sauce actually has pineapple. Friendly service. Before I leave Utah I'm stopping my here one more time. The teriyaki beef was delicious. I wasn't sure about the sauce on the rice, so they served it on the side. I'm glad because the sauce from the beef was just right. I also ordered a tossed salad which was fresh, with the sesame dressing on the side. I ordered the mini size, which was just the right size for me. read more

Driving through Utah, we wanted to get some Hawaiian BBQ and found this small restaurant. The menu is intimidating at first because there are so many options. I decided on the fish and rice plate. I asked for the sauce on the side and chose the vegetable salad. The fish was topped with a mixture of onions and tomatoes. Everything tasted delicious! The creamy sauce that came with the fish was good, especially after adding some lemon juice. The gravy that comes with the rice was good too, but I was glad that I asked for it on the side, because I didn't want too much of it. The toppings were yummy and added lots of flavor to the somewhat bland fish. The vegetable salad was light and refreshing. It was mostly pickled cucumbers. If I lived near here, I'd probably come here regularly. read more

I have been eating here all the time since my friend introduced me to this place. 95% percent of the time, their food is awesome, sometimes my food is not that great but nonetheless I'm giving it 5 stars. I usually order Katsu Chicken and Musubi but I have tried a few of their food and they're all good. The food is cheap for the amount and quality of food you get. read more

I had BBQ chicken salad. This was the only chicken that wasn't deep fried or in curry. I thought is was tough and stringy. Salad was just lettuce. Husband had BBQ chicken over noodles and it was much better. My mom had katsu chicken with rice and brown gravy and said it was awesome but it just looked like a chicken cutlet deep fried to me. I guess this place is just not my thing though it was very popular with the locals. I just have to have healthier food options than this place offers read more

I haven't had Honolulu Grill in over 5 years, since I moved to Arizona, but I still compare every Hawaiian restaurant to this amazing little place. Best Kalua pork I've had! I feel jipped when it doesn't come with cabbage now. They have a great cucumber salad as well. Everywhere here only serves macaroni salad as a side. I will definitely stop here whenever I'm in StG! read more

The ribs were very, very chewy... and everything was soaked in gravy. I asked for 2 extra eggs and the plate went up $2. I would also say that the food was blander than I would have hoped. I guess if the plate had tasted better overall, I wouldn't have minded the cost so much. Just not the best Hawaiian I've had considering quality of the food and cost. read more

Definitely some of the best Hawaiian we have had! We've tried every place around where we live, in Salt Lake City. This place is as good or better than any place we ate when we were in Oahu. Oahu has papa oles on the north shore- the garlic chicken here is even better. Perfect amount of crisp and so flavorful! The Mac salad is very good and authentic. Definitely get "sauce" which is teriyaki sauce on your rice. Katsu chicken is always popular for the kids- and adults- my 3 kids loved it. Service was fast and food was fresh. We will definitely eat here when in town again! They just need to bring it up to salt lake read more

Wasn't expecting much when I was invited to go with a friend for a casual business lunch. I went with the garlic chicken and the kalua pork. For a place that serves it's food in the foam containers, I wasn't expecting much. Now.... I think I may have found a default niche restaurant in St. George for those times that I can't decide. The chicken and the pork were very tender and in my opinion had just the right amount of flavoring. The rice/gravy and macaroni salad were a nice compliment as well. I need to try more of their dishes to bump it to a five star, but on first reactions, I'm very impressed and will definitely return for more. read more

Tried Katsu Chicken. It was ok, service was good, food smelled great. Personally didn't like it that much because it was dark meat, and I don't like dark meat. If it was white meat, I would have loved it. Not store's fault. read more

I'm hooked on the barbeque chicken. I took my 15 year old grandson there recently and he loved it too. It's delicious. I always order the white rice with sauce and the cucumber salad. My husband also likes the noodles for his side. I wish they would open another location on the West side of town. read more

This place is nothing shy of aloha. The food is amazing from the beginning of the menu to the ending of the menu. The family owns the establishment so there's a lot of love and time that goes into the atmosphere service and food. The only downfall of the place is it's always packed. Found this place shortly after moving to St George in 2005. Having lived in Hawaii for five years, every once in a while I need a Hawaiian food fix. This place fits the bill. Local food served by Hawaiians. I love everything about the place. Good food, good people, good times. I always have to have the Teriyaki Beef with the cucumber salad. Go! You won't be disappointed. Karaoke night is a favorite time to visit. Friday nights at the 700 South location. read more

Always loved the Grill. One of my favorite places to eat in town. Ive been going for years, since the very first hole in the wall off riverside drive. I sometimes wish it was still in that old location where no one knew who they were and weren't so busy. Dishes I would recommend: Garlic chicken, Katsu chicken, teriyaki chicken. Macaroni salad. say yes to sauce on the rice. A Musubi is a must. (or 5 and stick them in the fridge at home) read more

My wife and I always go here every time we are in StG. Their food is delicious and a must have when in StG. The prices are reasonable, the people are friendly, and you need to try the year round shaved ice. You really haven't lived until you've had a Polynesian cook you up some chicken. Yum! read more

Established in 2000.

Started off in a little hole in da wall, in an industrial area to say the least. In 2007 opened our 2nd location, and 2008 moved from our original location to where we are now.

Meet the Business Owner: bubu c.

Family owned and operated since 2000. The Honolulu Grill was founded by Don & Joan Crichton and their 3 children Don Jr.(Bubu), Tamore, and Dominick (Nick). With hopes of sharing their passion for food with each and everyone that has patronized "Da Grill". It has expanded to 2 locations in St.George with hopes of opening many more in the future. The objective is to bring polynesian cuisine and culture into the spot light. There has been a few that have come before us, we would like to add to it and perpetuate it.By our motto: quality,service,cleanliness,and consistency we hope to become one of the main influences in polynesian cuisine. We have a saying, "bringing hawaii to you" is what we try to do every time. Bring back those memories of when you went there on a trip or when you were a young child growing up in the islands or for those that never experienced Hawaii, we like to give them a taste of what it could be like.

I ordered a Manhattan, and lo and behold, I received some type of smoked old fashioned. When I asked for a new one, Dom, our waiter, said, "Sure, but you'll probably just get the same thing." That surprised me, and I was like, "Go talk to the bartender and see if they can make it." But Dom was pretty certain that, I'd get the same thing. So I ordered something else, and it came out fine. Dom, while new, was not a very good waiter and could use some more training in customer service and in cocktails. His attitude completely ruined the night.
